Reading the Oxford Handbook of Presocratic Philosophy -- specifically, Alexander Mourelatos' essay on Xenophanes of Colophon's "cloud-physics" (he explained every meteorological or astronomical phenomenon, from St. Elmo's fire to the stars themselves, by the rarefaction or condensation of clouds). It's easy -- too easy, perhaps -- to poke fun at the Presocratics for their naivete and empirical mistakes, but just consider the scope of their achievement: to look up at the sky, by day or night, with only the naked eye, saying to themselves "All this can be explained by natural processes, and I will explain it".
