Pastiche of a lost era (12/07/2025)

I'm a big fan of old things, everything from silent movies to 70s fashion to early 2000s internet aesthetics. I'm so into both retro and vintage stuff that I genuinely love it when people take inspiration from the past to create something new. But to be completely honest, I can't really stand pastiches.

Now, what exactly is a pastiche, or more specifically what I mean by that in this context? A pastiche is a deliberate imitation of an old style. Sometimes it’s used to pay tribute, and other times it's just a copy.

I'm not in the mood right now to write a full ass essay about why I personally don't like them, but I often feel that a lot of potential gets lost when everything is built around nostalgia, not just everyday nostalgia, but for eras that many people never even experienced.

Like I said from the beginning, I think we should look to the past and learn from it. I just think that being a shadow of a time that had its own unique context feels kind of empty.

This isn’t an attack on anyone, just something I started thinking about after watching XXX and had that 70s style… but it just felt kind of meh.
