Jardougall Oneshot- A lost tale
So I ship this. And its becoming a baby ship. So i thought id add to it and yeaaa.. here we go
"Tay! What are you doing?" Jenna whispered, trying her hardest not to sound like she was yelling. There was no way she was going to get ‘getting kicked out of a library’ on her bucket list, no matter how hard Tay tried. She was continuing to snake around each book case, weaving through each of them at different speeds and popping her head through different holes in the book cases to talk with Jenna rather than talk to her face to face. Jenna, however, was having a bit of fun with Tay’s game as the pair went running through the library shelves.
The silence of the library was deafening. Just the simple quick movements was cause more commotion with the library factuality than what they would like to admit. The smell of old and worn pages filled the air as the two girls wandered through the maze of the shelves.
Tay poked her head around the corner, nimble fingers bent over the metal side of the bookcase. She smiled and rolled her eyes at Jenna, who was mimicking her pose on the opposite end of the bookcase. “Jenna. You are in a library, you’re supposed to behave in an establishment such as this. That means you can’t speak loud and cause a ruckus , young lady”
"Who are you calling young lady, Tay? I’m pretty sure you being two years older doesn’t make much of a difference," Jenna teased.
"Yes it does. It means I’m older so I’m better," Tay said, sticking out her tongue as she finished talking.
"Fat chance. It means your older so you should know how to act in a library," Jenna responded, smiling at her ridiculousness.
"I know how to act in a library! See!" Tay said, starting up her movements again. Jenna raced to catch up to her, determined to finally stop her so they can get the books they came here to get.
"Taylor Jardine," Jenna started, turning a sharp corner as she spoke. "I swear to god if you get us kicked out-"
"You’ll what? " Tay stopped abruptly, leaving Jenna to run right into her as she turned around the bookcase unexpectedly. Jenna automatically had her hands out in front if her, her subconscious preparing for the crash into Tay. Her hands, kept low and forward, landed right on the crook of Tay’s hips.
Sometimes, Jenna couldn’t help but think about how many times she wishes she could just go up to her and kiss her. She wanted to be with her more than anything. The only thing stopping her was reality.
"What, no answer from the great sarcastic Jenna?"
Jenna was lost in her own little world, trying hard not to give into what she’s been wanting to do for years. To just lean forward and crash their lips together, or to simply even just tell her how she feels. Reality set in, and Tay was looking at her as if she was expecting an answer. “Um, can you repeat the question?” Jenna asked.
"Jenna McDougall, I swear to god you’re one of the most selective attentive people in the world. What would you do if we got kicked out?"
Tay was looking right into her eyes now, either ignoring Jenna’s finger tips as the grazed against her hips or not even caring and the hold Jenna has on her.
What Jenna wouldn’t do to have this moment whenever she pleased.
"I don’t know, I uh haven’t thought that far ahead," Jenna whispered, lowering her face so Tay wouldn’t see the redness that was forming around her cheeks.
Tay put her finger under Jenna’s chin, lifting it up just enough to look into her face. Jenna could feel her cheeks lighting up even more, she was sure they looked more like tomatoes than her actual skin color.
Jenna’s blush was met with a smile from Tay, followed by a pause. “You are in a library, you’re supposed to behave in an establishment such as this,” Tay whispered to her, moving out of Jenna’s still clasped fingered grasp, grabbing the beanie off of Jenna’s head, and moving around another book case, trying to get further and further in to the library.
Jenna regained her composure as Tay had left her hands, and started walking to catch up to her. She couldn’t believe how close she came to ruining everything. “Says the one who is running around in a librar- Tay wait! Hold up!” Jenna said, grabbing her wrist before Tay could make her way around another shelf of books.
"You are such a child sometimes I swear," Jenna teased, holding on to Tay’s arm. "Nice hat by the way. It looks cute on you."
Tay rolled her eyes dramatically, ensuring that Jenna saw it. “I can think of a few other things that would look cute on me,” she said, pausing for a wink. “I’m an adult, Jenna. Unhand me right this instant”
Jenna couldn’t help but smile every time she saw Tay smile. This was or of those moments. This was one of those moments where her hair falls perfectly around her face and her smile brought butterflies to her stomach.
"I don’t think so, not right now I won’t."
"So you’re just going to hold my hand all day then?"
"That’s the plan." More like that’s the dream.
"We will see how well that lasts," Tay darned, giving Jenna the challenge.
Jenna felt Tay shift her arm position, so she was holding more of her hand than her actual wrist. At some point while they were searching through the books, that’s what it became. Tay and Jenna we walking through the fiction section, looking for Jenna’s book and holding hands as they did so. Neither one of them thought this was odd or out of the ordinary. This was just something they were doing and were having fun doing. Tay was left constantly pulling Jenna to the next section of books, on the search for her specific one. They’re heads would come together once they thought found it, only to come apart once they had to place it back on the shelf.
Several times, Jenna thought she saw Tay staring at her and smiling. Her peripheral vision wasn’t the best in the world, but she hoped these little glimpses were true and not just wishful thinking.
Once they had gone through the whole section of where it could possibly be, Jenna let Tay lead the way to wherever she wanted to go. She was led to the back section of the library again, to the corner of the room of books.
Tay went down first, then pulled Jenna’s hand down, making Jenna go down to her level on the ground. This ended with the pair of them sitting criss crossed up against the wall in the farthest part of the library , back where no one else would ever think of going to for any other purpose besides having to find the blueprints for all the power plant buildings.
"So no book. Now what?" Tay asked, dangerously close to almost speaking level now that no one was around.
"They might have lost it in the tracking so it’s probably at the library across town. "
"Another field trip then?"
"Nah, it’s not that important. I kinda just want to go home and lounge around," Jenna said, resting her head on the tan wall behind her.
"Alrighty, that’s fine with me. But in a few minutes," Tay whispered, placing her head against Jenna’s shoulder and closing her eyes. "I just want to sit right now".
"We can do that. We can do what ever you want to do"
Several silent minutes passed, and Jenna found herself rubbing circles with her thumb on Tay’s hand, completely unaware she was even holding it let alone doing that intimate gesture. She stopped, bringing her thumb to a halt and moving her hand ever so slight so that she was no longer touching Tay at all besides letting her shoulder be used as Tay’s pillow.
"Why’d you stop?" Tay asked, pulling her head off of Jenna’s shoulder to get a good look at her.
"Because I didn’t know I had started."
"Oh. Well it felt quite nice. You always know what to do"
Tay’s face was extremely close to Jenna’s. She could see each individual eye lash , and could see the brown of her beautiful eyes. She can feel her breath against her face. They were so close, Jenna was sure if they moved a few inches closer their lips would meet.
Before Jenna knew what she was doing, she was leaning in. Her brain told her Tay was doing the same, that these feelings weren’t all just one sided on Jenna’s part. Jenna felt her eyes close as they landed on Tay’s soft lips, the lips that Jenna’s been dreaming of kissing ever since they met. There was no kissing back, no showing of any emotion from Tay, and Jenna could feel her heart beat faster. What if she had just fucked this up? What if she read everything wrong and Tay didn’t actually have feelings for her? The worst thought of all kept echoing in the back of her mind, ‘what if I just lost my best friend?’
Just as she was getting ready to pull away, Jenna felt something. She could feel Tay’s lips form a smile against hers, smiling into the kiss they were sharing. Tay started to kiss back, putting every emotion she possibly could into Jenna’s kiss.
It was perfect, as first kisses go. Tay melted in to Jenna’s arms, placing her hand on Jenna’s cheek to angle the kiss better. It was better than what Jenna had ever expected. It was more than she had ever dreamed. It was something she had be looking forward to for years and it was finally happening.
Tay started smiling again into the kiss again, and then straight up giggling. Tay’s infectious laugh made Jenna laugh too, resting their foreheads against each other as they tried to recompose themselves.
"I’m so sorry, Jen. I’m just really happy"
"I know Tay," Jenna responded in between her own chuckles. "Me too".
A library came up to them, both uncontrollably laughing at the whole situation. “Excuse me! You need to be quieter! You are in a library for Pete’s sake!”
"I’m so sorry ma’am," Tay responded, trying to suppress her happiness. "Something had happened and I was so happy it did that I just couldn’t stop laughing"
"And what was it that happened?" The librarian inquired, pushing up her glasses for a better look at the two girls sitting on the floor, closer to each other than friends would have felt necessary to sit.
"Something I’ve been waiting for for a long time," Tay said, pushing herself up off the floor. "Now, if you’ll excuse us."
Tay started walking and turned to look back at Jenna, still sitting on the ground in shock. She raised an eyebrow, as if to ask she she would be joining her on her dramatic walk outside the building.
Jenna nodded, and pushed herself up to join Tay. Sure, she had a bunch if questions running through her mind, but all that can wait. Right now, she just wanted to be with Tay.
They finally caught up to each other while they were nearing the exist doors of the library. Jenna, not ready to end what they just shared within the deep contents of the library, reached over and held Tay’s hand, in twining each finger and trying really hard to stop thinking about how perfectly they fit together.
"Best library trip I’ve ever had, " she heard Tay state as they walked out the automatic doors into the real world.

“Vic, so what if they do? We can hop the fence, and they’ll never be able to catch us.”
Vic shrugged his shoulders, trying his hardest not to let Jaime’s plan unsettle him. It’s wasn’t as if they’ve never done anything stupid like this, but they have never done anything stupid on school campus before. And this, in Vic’s opinion, qualified as stupid.
Jaime was the first to hop the fence, sticking one foot into the hole and pulling him up and over the wire with ease. The fence let out a creaking moan, which Vic though for sure was loud enough to alert anyone within a five mile radius, giving them a clear indication of where they are. Jaime, out of fear of getting stuck on the fence, never even managed to graze the top part of it. He had jumped over the fence gracefully, as if he had done it thousands of times, and landed on his feet hardly making any noise at all.
“Come on, Vic. I don’t want it to dry up yet!” Jaime shouted from the other side of the fence. Vic threw his backpack over first, letting Jaime catch it, before making his attempt at the fence.
Vic tried to wedge his feet through the wire squares in the fence, but couldn’t quite get it right. It was frustrating him to no end, and Jaime’s laughter from beyond the fence wasn’t helping him.
“Is it too difficult for Vic to do?” Jaime snickered, covering his mouth in attempts to stop his laughter.
“It’s only easy for you ‘cause you’re a Mexican jumping bean,” Vic hissed, already set on giving up on Jaime’s whole idea.
Jaime set Vic’s back pack back on the ground, letting it rest on the patchy almost brown grass, and equally effortlessly hopped the fence.
“Do you need a boost?”  Jaime sincerely asked, no threat of teasing in his voice. “I promise I will not purposely drop you. I might acciden-“
“Okay, not helping. Just cup your hands or something. Please,” Vic mumbled, trying to hide his eyes from Jaime. Vic didn’t want Jaime to see him so helpless like this. He wanted to be able to do one thing, just one thing, without his help. He was small and he knew it, and people were always trying to help him out with difficult things. He wanted to be able to just hop a god damn fence without needing any form or assistance, and he can’t even do that.
“Alright,” Jaime said, aware Vic’s mood had changed. He didn’t want to push too far into it, and settled for acting as if it hadn’t affected them at all. Jaime knelt down with his hands in a cupping motion, and gave Vic the boost he needed in order to hop the fence.  Jaime followed suit, after Vic had picked up his bag and continued walking.
Jaime grabbed his own bag and raced to catch up to Vic. “You don’t even know where we are going! You can’t lead the way!”
“Sorry Jaime,  I’m just a little mad. Go ahead.”
Jaime reached for Vic’s hand, intertwining their fingers, with hopes that it would calm him down a bit. He didn’t say anything, didn’t even look at Vic, just straight ahead to their destination.
Their school had just gone under construction, finishing up the last month of their senior year. The only thing left to do in the school was to lay down new concrete in the courtyard, the absolute center of the school. Because it was their last year, Jaime had wanted to do something to prove that they had been there, and he chose to do that with Vic in his company.
They slowly walked hand in hand to the center of the school. Vic had no idea what Jaime had planned, and secretly was hoping it wasn’t anything too outrageously against the law. His idea of senior pranks were absolutely ridiculous, he hoped it wasn’t anything like that.
Once they got to the center of the school, where the courtyard was located, Jaime and Vic stopped in their tracks. The courtyard section was still roped off like it was earlier that day, but this time it had fresh wet concrete beyond the ropes.
“Perfect,” Jaime said, barely louder than a whisper.
“Why?” Vic questioned.
Jaime smiled and pulled out a pen from his back pack. “You’ll see.”
They walked a little farther towards a corner where it was less likely for them to be seen from the busy street in front of their school. Though it was really late and it was unlikely there would be anyone out and about on the road, they didn’t want to risk it.
Jaime knelt down, careful not to touch the concrete, and studied it, deciding on what to write. Vic sat down beside him, content with the flowing breeze and the lack of people that were out tonight.
Jaime picked up his pen, and using the non writing end of his, wrote ‘JP’ in the wet concrete, smiling as he did so. Vic watched and waited as Jaime finished, and grabbed the pen from him to write ‘VF’ next to his. Jaime smiled over to Vic, one of the biggest smiles he has ever seen on his face.
“It’s our last year here, Vic. Now we can never be forgotten. Our mark is forever here, locked in permanent concrete for all future high schoolers’ to see. Jaime sat all the way down, the look of success written across his face. He closed his eyes, picturing who knows what, and smiled.
“Is that what you want?”
“What?” Jaime asked, opening his eyes and turning towards Vic.
“To never be forgotten?”
Jaime’s smile turned down as he thought. It wasn’t a question he was often asked. But after pondering it for the past few days, he couldn’t help but wonder if that was true. “No. Yes. I don’t know, honestly.”
Vic leaned over, letting his lips slowly descend onto Jaime’s. This wasn’t their first kiss, but never the less, it sent butterflies to each of their stomachs.
That’s what happens when you find love.
“I’ll never be able to forget you. What you’ve done for me.  Or what we are,” Vic whispered into Jaime’s lips. Jaime gave Vic a quick kiss back, promising to return in a minute, whispering “Hang on.” He felt he had to fix something really quick.
Jaime reached over and made a few changes in the concrete where their initials were. It now read ‘JP & VF forever’.
“No way they’ll be able to forget us now.”
Sure, it was cliché as hell, but it still made Vic’s heart soar.
---
Ten years later, at the high school reunion, Jaime is still never forgotten.
The faculty never found out who vandalized the concrete the day before the students had access to the newly built school. The students, on the other hand, always had their suspicions. They were never ratted out though, which Vic silently thanked every person in his year for.
Ten years, Vic thought. Ten whole years since that night we were here.
He could barely make it to tonight’s gathering. It was his brother’s doing, forcing him to go. Mike had insisted he went out tonight; after all, it’s been a hard few weeks. But Vic didn’t want to see what they had written, what will still be there after ten years. He didn’t want to be reminded of him. He had promised himself he would only go to the gym, see some old friends, and leave. Twenty minutes tops. No courtyard. No memories. No problems.
That’s how he ended up sitting at the edge of the courtyard, right where their message was.
Vic sat down in the same spot he did ten years ago, when they contemplated the importance of never being forgotten. If he closed his eyes, he could picture Jaime sitting there with his ridiculous grin on his face. Jaime’s voice can almost be heard over the sound of the music from the gym. Vic could picture Jaime sitting there, pulling out their breakfast as the sun rose. He could picture lying against him with a blanket wrapped around them both. He can hear the endless murmurs of “I love you’s” that were shared between them from that night. He could feel Jaime’s touch on his skin, his fingers running through his hair. It was almost as if he was still here. Vic would have laughed, if the tears hadn’t already begun.
Vic reached his hand out to the ‘JP’ written in the concrete, next to the ‘VF’. He let his fingers grazed against it, barely touching it at all. It was too painful for him; he didn’t want to make it worse. He didn’t want to be reminded of something he can’t ever have.
He let his fingers move to the ‘&’. That symbol was a promise. It was a promise that kept Vic up at night. It was something that led him to tears while trying to do basic things. It prevented him from going about his life in a happy, normal way. That sign meant he couldn’t make waffles without crying. He couldn’t listen to the radio without screaming at it, frustrated that all they are playing is love songs. He couldn’t make the sheets. He couldn’t see the color blue without tears. He couldn’t live in his own home. He couldn’t even look at his friends without breaking down.
That symbol was a lie.
Vic wanted to rage against the symbol. He wanted it destroyed. It was a lie, it never came true. They were never given that chance. They never got the ‘&’. They never got the ‘forever’.
He beat his fists against the writing. He punched it, scratched at it; anyway he thought he could remove it. He wanted it gone from his life, form his memory. He wanted no trace of it left here, for everyone to see. Forever. Blood was starting to show on his hands from the violence against the concrete, but Vic didn’t care. Vic didn’t notice. Tears we falling down his face, blood from his hands, and he still couldn’t stop.
He wanted it gone. More than how much he wanted Jamie back.
Vic stayed that way for a few more minutes, attacking something that couldn’t fight back. Then, as people started leaving the gym in clusters, he froze. He couldn’t do it anymore. He hung his head and let his hands fall, the tears still rolling down his face.
Vic sobbed. He sobbed uncontrollably. He pleaded with whoever was listening. He wanted things back to the way they were. He wanted everything normal. He wanted to go back in time, to prevent Jaime from leaving that day a month ago. He wanted everything all fixed.
Of course that couldn’t happen. Life was too cruel that way.
Vic pulled a small circular object from his pocket, and placed it on the ‘JP’. It was his, it would only make sense. He then pulled his own ring off, and placed it on the ‘VF’. He wanted to tear his heart out if he could; maybe then it will stop aching like it has been.
He put both hands on the ‘JP’ again, memorizing the way Jaime had written it ten years ago. They were so young then. They had so much planned for the future.
Vic stayed that way, not bothering to wipe the tears from his face anymore.
“You’re still never forgotten. I’ll always remember you. Rest in peace, Jaime.”
