dark web
dark web
The dark web is a hidden part of the Internet that can be accessed only using specialized software and configurations. Most people use a virtual private network to access the dark web, but you can also surf with the Tor browser and other anonymization technologies.
The dark web serves a number of purposes for some groups, including whistleblowers and journalists who wish to avoid censorship or other retaliation. It also allows individuals who are in countries where freedom of speech is limited to maintain a connection to the Internet.
It is a dangerous place for those who are not savvy about how to navigate it, as it can be used by criminals to carry out illegal activity and evade law enforcement. Some of the most common activities include selling drugs, counterfeit goods, stolen goods, weapons, and extreme pornography.
In the United States, for example, the dark web is known to be a haven for people who wish to buy guns. In the past year, Vocativ found 281 gun listings on the dark web and a majority of these guns were shipped from the US.
There are also websites that offer sketchy services such as launching remote access Trojans (RATs) and keyloggers, phishing attacks, and stealing user information. It is also possible to find people eager to conduct DDoS attacks and rent botnets to plant malware on target systems.
Law enforcement has been focusing on these marketplaces, which can be a major source of illicit activity. In 2021, Europol took down the largest and longest-running dark web market, Hydra Market, in an operation that involved law enforcement agencies from nine countries.
