Haven't seen anyone talk about this yet, so here's a post.
The United Kingdom has just banned asylum seekers who arrived via "dangerous routes" from ever being granted citizenship. [Source]
I have said this multiple times already, but all this does is serve to punish already vulnerable people for being vulnerable, and putting themselves at risk of trafficking and/or exploitation. The narrative of "legal" asylum seeker and "illegal" asylum seeker is purposefully divisive, and not challenged enough. The UK does not have safe routes. The most legal way to enter the country to seek asylum, is to lie on your visa application by claiming that you're coming for tourism or something. Under international law, there is no way to be an "illegal" asylum seeker. All asylum seeking, no matter how you entered the country, is legal.
I don't know. I wish people would discuss asylum seekers' plights openly. Most of the time it comes off as if we are a hypothetical group that cannot exist in reality and have our own thoughts and beliefs.
If you're from the UK, I urge you to email your MP, and state that you're against this. You can always look at local charities, and see what they're up to, and if they take monetary support. If you're not from the UK, familiarise yourself with your country's asylum seekers laws, and campaign for more protective laws that do not involve dehumanising the person.
Or you can give me (an asylum seeker in the UK) money too.
Or you can just reblog this or something, more than anything, I want a conversation to happen on asylum seekers' rights, as opposed to it constantly being ignored.
I'm just scared for my future.
