Title: Latinx Superheroes in Mainstream Comics (Latinx Pop Culture)
Author or Creator: by Frederick Luis Aldama
Publisher and number of pages/length of time: University of Arizona Press, 232 pp., 3 weeks
Year of publication/release: 2017
Brief response to the title: Aldama’s book is a wonderful breakdown of Latinx representation in mainstream superhero comics, notably DC and Marvel. He not only begins with an exhaustive list of Latinx characters from the Golden Age to the 21st Century. He provides a cogent theory of how comics readers co-create comics and how this pertains to the Latinx readers’ experiences specifically. Finally, he addresses Latinx superhero in multimedia. Since as the MCU is perched to begin a steady diversification of characters and representation is of extreme interest. A great read!

Publisher and number of pages/length of time: First Second, 320 p., 1.5 h.
Year of publication/release: 2014
Brief response to the title: I did some digging into some of the most challenged graphic bovels for the RRRR assignment. This is one of the most challenged as well as ciritcally acclaimed. I’m glad I decided to read it. It is so beautifully illustrated so well-written. Simple and elegant and full of the melancholy one faces when confronted by the difficult issues of growing up.

Brief response to the title: Ahsoka Tano grew into one of the fan favorite characters of the expanded Star Wars universe. Created by Dave Filoni and Geroge Lucas for The Clone Wars movie and subsequent series, she is now made the move into The Mandalorian and live-action, and now a show of her own. The final four episodes are some of the greatest and most heart-breaking moments of the entire Star Wars saga, and the final episode a masterpiece that is gut-wrenching. There is almost no dialogue and we are moved by a masterful score and breathtaking visuals.

Brief response to the title: Great political satire and biting humor. I read this strip as a kid, in the beginning because I thought Opus and Bill the Cat were awesome. Hhowever as an adult I am shocked at how long the “Culture War” has gone on in this country. This collection goes back almost 35 years and so much of its humor is still relevant.

However, I was moved by the elements of queer shame and how they affected Clementine. I was in High School and College (1st time) in the 90s and it made me quite nostalgic.
