Ok. So how exactly can New Jersey be directly related to New York? And if Kansas thinks it's so cool that Superman came from her, then how does New Jersey feel about Batman and the rest of the Batfamily? Since a lot of comicbook authors think Gotham is in southern New Jersey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
((And that’s how they are related with Delaware as the third wheel in their bromance! It’s because of Netherlands.
And New Jersey has some very contradicting opinions on the Batfamily.))
New Jersey: Oh my god, me and the Batfamily have so many things in common. Flashy cars, money, non-existent parents, fabulous outfits, and cross-dressing! But…THEY KEEP BREAKING MY SHIT. I DEMAND COMPENSATION YOU GARDEN HOES.

so i was just thinking about how dead poets society was filmed in delaware and that my middle school art teacher is like clearly an extra in one of the shots and it made me wonder what books/movies exist that are set in delaware. this is what i’ve learned:
someone has written 304 pages of obama & biden driving around delaware to solve crimes with their Epic Bromance (except for their actual war crimes, presumably)
the two delaware book genres seem to be: christian historical fiction and supernatural gay erotica
GOOSEBUMPS (2015) TOOK PLACE IN DELAWARE AND NOBODY EVER TOLD ME ? HELLO ? I HAVE BEEN FAILED
someone actually wrote a murder mystery with their hero being a detective in our state police department
Films Set In New York City Do Not Count Simply From Proximity, Google
se hinton apparently wrote a novel based in delaware and i’m going to read it just to write fanfic about her characters being gay until she sues me
for some reason wikipedia is super convinced that man of steel & batman v superman took place in delaware and i have no idea why
i can apparently buy the delaware state trooper exam review guide on amazon kindle for $7.25
Beloved By Toni Morrison Is Set In Delaware, Ohio And Thus Also Does Not Count, Google
there is only one person who understands the essence of delaware and it’s the one who wrote this first half of a summary for a children’s chapter book:  It is a land of wonders. It is a land of mystery. It is a land that time forgot (or chose specifically not to remember). Cut off from the civilized world for untold years by prohibitive interstate tolls at the New Jersey border, this land is called: Delaware.
to be fair i don’t really know what i expected

In 1988, following the Crisis, which, at the time was groundbreaking, DC codified exactly where each of their fictional cities were. Metropolis was placed in Delaware, while Gotham was placed in Jersey. The goal was to nail down distance and travel times for crossover/team up purposes.
Looking at a map, and disclaimer, I have never been to the East Coast, it seems that on the DC Earth, Gotham is on Cape May, New Jersey, whereas Metropolis replaced Belltown in Delaware.
Since both cities were based on New York, the coastal topgraphy is probably different than our Earth, but there you go.
What this mean to me is is that the Batfam all have Jersey accents with the exception of Jason, who leans into a Jersey Shore type accent simply to annoy Bruce, and Damien, who is developing one and is angry about it. Alfred, of course, is Alfred. I don’t have the comedy chops to do anything with this, but someone else might.
It should be noted that @unpretty, who is queen of the Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman shenanigans fic, has placed Gotham in the midwest near Chicago, largely because the idea of Bruce Wayne with a thick Midwestern Accent is hilarious and you know what, she’s right.
Also, there have been at least two more Crisis since 1988, so this map honestly means fuckall at this point. Go nuts.

Superman, in the middle of a conversation with other heroes: *randomly mentions Batman breaking into his house in the middle of the night because of something he wanted to talk about*
The other heroes: *confused because they don’t realize Superman has a secret identity and thinks that Batman just randomly broke into the Fortress of Solitude in the North Pole*
What Bruce actually did: *forgot that the Zeta tubes exist and drove from Gotham to Metropolis in the middle of the night*
What’s going through Clark’s head, who’s been friends with Bruce since they were 10: “I’m glad he isn’t having to randomly drive to from New Jersey to Kansas like he used to when we were teens! Now he just has to drive to Delaware instead!”
What the other heroes are thinking: “Batman just randomly goes to the North Pole to mess with Superman???!!???”

Why can’t real life cities be 10 mile tall gothic metropolises with red and black and skulls and statues of weeping saints everywhere

hold on a fucking second. delaware is a state?? i thought it was a river? or is the river more important than the state? why don't i know this? (i should mention i don't like in america, i'm just confused)
there is delaware (state) and delaware (river)
both are equally strange
the state is a tiny little cryptid thing
the rive is a monster that spans new york, pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. also washington crossed it once and that was like kinda a big deal i guess. like crossing the rubicon in rome.
the state tries to me more important with its “im the first state!!!” bs (seriously its even on the fucking license plates) but we all know. its the river.

10 things I loved about Superman
1. Clark. Clark. this characterization of him was absolutely incredible. everything I’ve ever wanted. he’s just good a man doing his best. I love that the movie went out of its way to emphasize his kindness—at one point he saves a squirrel! there’s an excellent monologue late in the movie where he expands on this and it almost made me teary. and come on…have you seen david corenswet??? gorgeous.
2. Lois!!! she’s sharp, she’s funny, she challenges Clark but she loves him DOWN. the best Lois we’ve seen since Erica Durance
3. Clois….guys they’re letting people have chemistry in blockbusters again
4. Krypto. this might make me the most basic bitch of all time but I LOVED Krypto. so cute. such a delight
5. Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. incredible performance. not sure I love this Lex characterization but he was excellent. he did sound a lot like Cole sprouse though and that was very distracting at first
6. Mr. Terrific. not quite sure what to make of the justice gang and I wasn’t familiar with Mr terrific at all but I liked him. very interested in the Justice gang’s implications for booster gold
7. metropolis is in Delaware CONFIRMED. this is a strange small hill I’ve been dying on for a long time. it is often in Delaware in the comics but people want it to be an nyc stand in so bad that they ignore that
8. Gotham City EXISTS. there’s a blink and you miss it moment where it appears on an exit sign and this was weirdly one of the things that excited me the most
9. the tone. it was earnest, optimistic, and sincere. this made it such a refreshing balm to the overly quippy/edgy path many superhero movies have been down lately. it was funny though!
10. the score! I’m not musically inclined so I don’t have anything intelligent or specific to say but I thought it brought a lot of heart to the movie and was a worthy successor to the iconic theme

The world felt so lived in. It wasn't a car commercial film, you know? there was cracked paint on Lois's door jamb, and the Kents' house looked like a house anyone I know might've grown up in in the 90s, and everyone was driving shitty, normal cars.
(more spoilery thoughts under the cut)
Also loved all the little world details like Lois's license plate being Delaware and the highway sign giving exit directions to Gotham (as a die hard Gotham-Metropolis twin cities on either side of Delaware Bay truther). The confrontation between the Justice Gang and Supes taking place in the Stagg Industries building despite (iirc) Simon never once actually being mentioned by name (of course, neither was Sapphire, but we also got to see her for like 10 seconds, six of one, half dozen of the other). The billboard for Big Belly Burger and the Kaiju being originally spotted in a Jitters. Markovia being the third country visible in Eve's map leak. Like the movie had whole and total respect for the fact that it is part of a universe, and that that is not Our universe trying to put up with superheroes, but a universe all its own and there's something absolutely refreshing about seeing that in a giant live action format.
Tiny disconnected thought -- Lois said she was just some kid from Bakerline, so like... was General Lane stationed at whatever Fort surely must exist in Metropolis's proximity or is DCU!Lois not an army brat?
Anyway:
A lesser film more cued into public perception of DC comics rather than the vast richness and opportunities actually available would've had the Mr Terrific role just be Bruce, or would've had it be a character called "Mr Terrific" but who was actually just Batman clone 328. And instead it was actually Mr Terrific, badass and surrounded by his T-spheres as intended.
Jimmy!! I have no words!
Lois and Clark having a big dramatic emotional scene while crazy technicolour battle was happening outside the window, both of them completely unfussed about it.
Perry just sitting and listening to Jimmy and Lois's pitch for their article while all of Metropolis is evacuating around them, also unbothered.
Rex!!!! Joey!!? Like has that kid been seen anywhere since that BoP arc in 2003?
Spending the whole movie wondering why Clark was letting his dog live in the Fortress, alone, without any training or manners, only to Understand Completely in approximately 10 seconds at the end.
I did also appreciate the Ultraman fakeout and him being a clone instead of from Earth-3. It's too soon to be pulling in the multiverse, y'know? But for my money, since he was cloned "wrong" I'm going with he's gonna come out the other side of that black hole as Biz, because I think that would be fun. Although, y'know, with the sick '90s flow, could also be angling closer to Henshaw. I look forward to seeing.
The Engineer was so perfectly unsettling, and since she's not dead, and they've apparently got an Authority movie on the docket upcoming, I have to assume she'll be part of that, right?
And final thoughts before I make myself go to bed:
Nicholas Hoult was extraordinary as Lex, truly he was, and also I barely noticed because David Corenswet was so phenomenally perfect as Clark. It is the only time I've ever seen a live-action Superman lean into the part where Clark says "golly" as an oath, and fully sell it. Like of course Lois (Rachel Brosnahan, also perfect) would have difficulty admitting to herself/him that she's in love with him. He's ridiculous. He's a ridiculous person. Absolutely absurd. Physical embodiment of hopepunk, and also broke into her apartment to make breakfast at night. Did you know, he can be a real jerk sometimes 🥺
