Needs

There are a thousand disclaimers everywhere you look about how asexuals can have sex, can enjoy it, can at least be willing to engage for a partner's sake, etc etc. And that's all true, in some cases- a lack of sexual attraction doesn't dictate sexual behavior. But if you say a single word implying that maybe allosexuals can go without sex, everyone, especially the allos in question, will get incredibly defensive. Like it's unspeakably offensive to even imply that maybe they can live without partnered sex. That maybe they could be the ones accommodating their ace partners (especially given that they are fully capable of getting off on their own, whereas there isn't really an equivalent alternative to Not Having Sex). And... I don't know. It's hard to know exactly how to go about writing this, because I am, politically, very sex-positive. I believe everyone should be having all the sex that they want, whatever way they want, with whoever and as many people as will indulge them. At the same time, though, I don't think sex is as much of a need as people tend to claim. This is something that I am primarily thinking of with regards to relationships, but could certainly apply more broadly. Sexual pleasure is not something that requires another person to achieve. I've heard plenty of reasons for why partnered sex is supposedly necessary- that without it, allos feel unwanted, unloved, unattractive; and while I'm sure those feelings are very real, I do not think they are a fair or justified reaction to a partner's (a)sexuality, which they cannot control and which has nothing to do with anyone else. To be honest, I fully believe those feelings could be worked through. I think "I feel unattractive because my partner won't have sex with me" has the potential to become "my partner's level of sexual attraction is unrelated to whether I am attractive or not". I don't expect that very many allos would care to work through those feelings, and I don't mean to imply that anyone should stay in a relationship they find unfulfilling. I suppose, ultimately, I'm moreso frustrated by how this is treated like an inherent, steadfast, unchangeable fact of allosexuality. That allos must be sexually intimate with a partner or they are literally unable to feel emotionally fulfilled. I am just not willing to accept that as a truth. If sex is something you want, go for it. But prioritizing it is a choice. I'm just really tired of people acting like it is intrinsic to allosexuality that sex must be part of a relationship. It is something many allos choose to prioritize and choose not to go without. There's nothing necessarily wrong with that, but be real about it. (It's also not lost on me that a lot of the defensiveness around it probably comes from the instinctive association they make between sexlessness and puritanism. If you've already done the work to feel sexually liberated and free, I can see why there'd be a strong reaction to the suggestion that you don't need sex. But that instinctive reaction is not correct even if it is strong.)

the only thing in books that can truly make me bawl my eyes out is the feeling of overwhelming hopelessness.

in tgcf book 2 when you have to powerlessly watch as everything xie lian has worked towards, everything he love, get torn away so excruciatingly slowly while everything he does turns out for naught. it's in the way that you can feel yourself giving up along side him, slowly realizing that everything he does is useless against the will of the universe.

another, less known example (but one that was almost more painful than xie lian's), is from How to Survive as a Villain. the entire time when xiao yuan is trying to save the Northern Kingdom I felt like crying (and I did cry a lot). the reason I find xiao yuan's situation more sad than xie lian's is because he actually loses people we as an audience are also attached to emotionally — and all of this is happening after we already know that xiao yuan has struggled and lost so much already in his past life. the fact that we get 1) on screen deaths of characters we and xiao yuan care about, and 2) we see how all this stress and grief is affecting him all the way up until that time jump. the addition of the hair pins really killed me tbh

anyway, I just wanted to share my feelings and also promote How to Survive as a Villain bc I really love the first like 2/3 of that novel and it's not talked about enough.

i think it's really fun when a rly specific trope is super popular in one particular medium but in other ones it's just totally unheard of. it's the time knife. visual novel players are suuuuper used to death games but many others encountered them for the first time in squid games. the other day my mom showed me all excited the summary of a super original novel she found and it was about a girl who got reincarnated as the main character in her favorite fantasy book

Genuinely, one of my favourite things about book 4 and Tgcf in general is the fact that the Bamboo Hat guy was not that nice. Like he wasn’t going out of his way to be nice and comforting and selfless he was chewing Xie Lian out for spilling his rice and then when he realised how upset Xie Lian was he had like such a low level empathy response of just being like my guy it is simply not that serious, stop being dramatic and wallowing in the rain. Like, why are you soaked, lying in the street? Just put my hat on, you sad bastard and that broke Xie Lian out of genuine genocidal rage. Like truly it just shows the most basic anyone would do that acts of kindness can have such monumental changes to people at their lowest (*cough* like saving a kid from falling to death because he’s a kid and you can save him *cough*). It’s just that this man is the saviour of Yong’an. He has no idea because he probably just went home and told his family like a dramatic dude on the road tripped me. Still, when I yelled at him, he almost broke down. I hope he’s okay and probably never thought about Xie Lian again, meanwhile Xie Lian pays homage to his kindness for the next 800 years of his life.
