Okay, in the midst of writing my fic, I've gone and done a thing that might make me go hurl later: I wrote an extensive blog piece on my site about reader engagement, AO3, and comment culture.
As someone who used to be an editor, a writing consultant, a writing TA, an employee in a Writing Center, and a fanfic writer for the last 15 years now, I'm really passionate about this conversation, not so much because I'm experiencing entitlement from readers (my readers have actually been some of the kindest humans I've met), but because I've detected a growing problem with fandom culture that's gone largely unexamined (no spoilers here, you'll have to read the post).
But I also share a few hella vulnerable and painful stories I didn't realize I had blocked from my memory, as a writer. I'll be honest, as a hella private, autistic introvert who prefers intimate convos over posts, this was a MAJOR step out of my comfort zone.
But I feel so much has been missed in this conversation. So many hurts and feelings completely misunderstood, so I hope this post resonates with someone. That was the goal.
Here is a brief excerpt:
Ultimately, we've found ourselves in a living nightmare [in fandom culture], and we don't know how to wake up from it. We know something is terribly wrong, but we can't put our finger on what exactly. We don't know why this is happening and, what's worse, we don't know who to blame. Is it us? Is it because we haven't done enough, or asked enough, or promoted enough? Or, is it you, the reader? Is it because you haven't commented enough, or appreciated enough, or engaged enough? We don't know. All we know is that we hate this and we hate feeling like this. We want to experience something different but we don't know how to get it...

I don't think you have to read either essay to grasp the basic concepts
death of the author means that once a work is complete, what the author believes it to mean is irrelevant to critical analysis of what's in the text. it means when analysing the meaning of a text you prioritise reader interpretation above author intention, and that an interpretation can hold valid meaning even if it's utterly unintentional on the part of the person who created the thing. it doesn't mean 'i can ignore that the person who made this is a bigot' - it may in fact often mean 'this piece of art holds a lot of bigoted meanings that the author probably wasn't intentionally trying to convey but did anyway, and it's worth addressing that on its own terms regardless of whether the author recognises it's there.' it's important to understand because most artists are not consciously and vocally aware of all the possible meanings of their art, and because art is communal and interpretive. and because what somebody thinks they mean, what you think somebody means, and what a text is saying to you are three entirely different things and it's important to be able to tell the difference.
male gaze is a cinematographic theory on how films construct subjectivity (ie who you identify with and who you look at). it argues that film language assumes that the watcher is a (cis straight white hegemonically normative) man, and treats men as relatable subjects and women as unknowable objects - men as people with interior lives and women as things to be looked at or interacted with but not related to. this includes sexual objectification and voyeurism, but it doesn't mean 'finding a lady sexy' or 'looking with a sexual lens', it means the ways in which visual languages strip women of interiority and encourage us to understand only men as relatable people. it's important to understand this because not all related gaze theories are sexual in nature and if you can't get a grip on male gaze beyond 'sexual imagery', you're really going to struggle with concepts of white or abled or cis subjectivities.

ok i need to rant about dismas and reynauld
the fandom and the devs have a tendency to woobify reynauld a bit more than dismas, but i think the two of them are more similar than anyone realizes and that's what makes them work
reynauld in dd1 is semi-canonically a kleptomaniac (its his starting quirk, i believe) and as a highwayman, dismas is essentially a professional thief.
but here's the thing. as a professional crusader, so is reynauld. historically speaking, crusaders spent most of their time pillaging and looting their way across europe. that is to say, systematized theivery.
what sets them apart is that dismas regrets it. reynauld doesnt. in the process of robbing a carriage, dismas kills a mother and child, and regrets it for the rest of his life. his name, dismas, comes from the story of the biblical thief who was crucified on the cross next to jesus, repents while on the cross next to the big man himself. so yeah big themes of repentance going on here
reynauld is named for raynald of châtillon. i dont think these guys are meant to be the exact same person, (reynauld is firmly established as a peasant before becoming and knight and raynald is a king) it's worth looking at raynald's campaigns to get an idea of what reynauld might have been up to. these campaigns include:
-torturing the patriarch of antichos for not giving him money
-plundering cyprus
-raiding the euphrates
-seizing control of the caravan routes between egypt and syria and raiding any other caravans within range
-plundering attacks on muslims making pilgrimage to mecca along the red sea
this guy was FAMOUSLY greedy, and its not just muslim sources who say that, its european sources too.
anyway. i think it's very telling that while reynauld initially joins up to avoid the threat of starvation, he later chooses to abandon his family and return to a life of constant warfare. crucially, unlike dismas, he does not seem to regret this or repent for doing something that is not only as violent, but is functionally the same thing in a different location. (that is, attacking and robbing caravans along a strategic route/highway)
so where am i going with all this?
dismas redeems reynauld, not the other way around
