Lucy Gray didn’t know about the snakes or that Snow put the handkerchief in there, no duh she thought she was gonna die. The thing that gets me though (and this is why I love Rachel Zegler’s performance of this scene) is that once she realizes the snakes aren’t attacking her, the song is no longer a funeral song; it becomes a big ol’ middle finger to the Capitol. Girly looked straight into that camera and said you hear that, motherfuckers? I’m staying right the fuck here

from katniss' perspective, the 75th hunger games & the 3rd quarter quell are all about her disobedience (and peeta's to some extent, but most of all that was her doing.) being that this was the only perspective we've had for years and years and years, that's the only assumption the rest of us could've made too. and sotr, against all odds, continues to ruthlessly add context to so many aspects of the series, whether we like it or not. the inclusion of so many known names and faces is something i've seen criticized and accused of being fanservice/nostalgia fuel, which... spectacularly misses the point.

beetee has, up until then, been a victor with known rebel tendencies. he's already being punished for that in sotr, let alone after. we don't know the details of mags' and wiress' involvement with the rebellion attempt in sotr, but we last see them tired, hurt, and visibly post-torture. johanna mason won her games by doing nothing offensive at all (...for all we know...) and yet her whole family has been wiped out—why? what did she do in the games, after the games? before the games? annie, who was herself reaped for the quarter quell, won when a huge wave drowned all the remaining tributes—think about it: is that what the capitol likes? so many "boring" deaths in one fell swoop, is that entertaining tv? of course not. what happened in that arena that caused this potential error in the system that ended up being played off as annie's great strategy?

point being, there are so many things we don't know but can possibly infer about the pre-quell lives of these specific tributes & how they may have rebelled, incited rebellion, or attempted to undermine snow/the capitol. yes, this quell was rigged. yes, snow did this largely to punish katniss in that moment in time specifically. no, the selection of her fellow tributes was not happenstance. (neither was, for that matter, the selection of the careers random: gloss and cashmere, siblings, beloved of the capitol and certainly the pre-determined winners.)

snow's fatal mistake here was not being able to let the sleeping dogs lie; he saw the chance to punish everyone who pissed him off, took it, and paid very dearly for the arrogant stupidity it takes to put panem's smartest and deadliest and angriest and rebelliest eggs in one tiny horrible basket.

Flirting with the idea of developing a fic idea I had where Dean freaks out after Cas is bought back (post s15) and flees to Jody's under the guise of fixing her roof or her fence or something and just keeps finding things to fix instead of going back to the bunker, and in that time he actually learns how to unwind and set aside his soldier mentality for the first time ever, opens up to Jody a little about not knowing how to accept someone's love without thinking it will kill them, and he also begins to grow out his hair and beard because again, he's no longer a soldier he doesn't need the utilitarian cut anymore, and when Cas finally gets fed up enough to chase him down and confront him he bursts into Jody's house ready to fight it out but is blindsided by Dean Winchester, love of his life, with floppy hair, a beard, some fuckass Hawaiian shirt, bickering in the kitchen with Claire as he cooks dinner or something and the steam is taken out of him so fast because it's the softest and most relaxed he's ever seen Dean that he just kind of walks up and puts his hands in his hair and stares at him while Dean has that emotional in love with my best friend crisis he was avoiding for months in like fifteen seconds flat

okay so I've been mulling over the dialogue in this gifset from Lucifer Rising and it continues to fascinate me because it's a crucial window into Cas's pre-Dean mindset, and something that I often feel gets overlooked in examinations of his overall journey.

Although we wouldn't see the full extent of the torture and brainwashing Cas experienced at Heaven's hands until the Carver era, season 4 had already heavily hinted at Cas being "reconditioned" by his fellow angels via violence or threat of violence. Likewise, we wouldn't learn the extent to which Cas was a chronic hitch in Heaven's (and God's) plans until much later in the show's run, but these lines from him are incredibly revealing when you consider the context we later get for his history:

Castiel, as we later learn, has consistently been motivated by compassion since time immemorial, and it has consistently driven him to question and disobey his orders. Likewise, his superiors have consistently administered corrective punishment (with or without memory modification included) to keep him subdued and falling in line.

And when I look at that dialogue from Cas: "What is so worth saving? I see nothing but pain here," it underscores to me just what effect those millennia of brainwashing had on him.

Heaven couldn't kill the part of Castiel that cared, couldn't stamp out the part that empathized with humanity and wanted to be kinder than the divine agenda would tolerate. That was always nascent within him. What they could stifle and snuff out was any hope he had that a better outcome was possible. What the crushing machine of Heaven did to him was convince him that there was no way to change the way things were, so it was better to go along with things and try to soften the blow rather than fight the system itself.

Cas spent fuck knows how many millennia ground into a rut, being beaten over the head by the idea that it was all heading straight for armageddon anyway, so wasn't it better to support Heaven's agenda so that at least some people would have a shot at paradise, even if countless untold more would suffer horribly as a result?

What Dean changed for Cas wasn't his capacity for compassion or his instinctual desire to help; it was presenting him with the idea that it didn't matter whether they succeed. It was fixing in his mind the idea that given the choice between being complicit in a monstrous evil just because it might possibly be in the service of some hypothetical greater good, and fighting an impossible battle against overwhelming odds to prevent said monstrous evil, it doesn't matter whether you win or not. What matters is trying, because anything else is unconscionable.

Cas spent so many hopeless years feeling intensely driven to help and simultaneously absolutely certain that changing Heaven's apocalyptic designs was impossible so there was no point in even trying. Dean was the one who made him realize that trying is the whole point.
