being egyptian and reading the kane chronicles is so wild because it says that the egyptian gods migrate to wherever the center of western civilization is, implying that ancient egypt was a western civilization or that egypt's a was, and not an is. like why is this non-white civilization which manifests today in a real life country supposedly a western civilization but the actual people whose heritage is tied to that civilization are excluded from it? why is a white british woman (a WHITE BRITISH WOMAN!) the living incarnation of isis - the mother of egypt? there's no cultural nuance. there's no consideration. the image of the egyptian mother, through isis or otherwise, is something so fucking important in egyptian culture, and to have it represented by a british woman - a descendant of those who bastardized and stole our heritage- is just insane to me. perhaps an interesting analysis of post colonial egypt in a meta sense, but that's for egyptian artists to dissect, not riordan. and that's only one thing. egypt - the actual egypt from which everything in the series originates) in that series is so mocked. i remember at some point sadie and walt are walking through egypt and mock the fact that since the arabic language has no "p", they pronounce pepsi as bebsi. no respect. the very foundation of this series is based in racism, in colonial thinking, and, ultimately, white supremacy. why is zia, the only actual egyptian in the main cast, so irrelevant? so quiet and without agency? in a meta way, she's like egypt itself. i just wanted to bring this to light since a lot of rr crit focuses on the racism and homophobia present in pjo and hoo and mcga and toa- perfectly valid criticisms that are well deserved - but barely anyone talks about the inherent colonialist and racist foundations of the entirety of the kane chronicles, which is why i wanted to bring it to light. enjoy the series if you want, i'm not saying you're not allowed, but as long as we're criticizing riordan, let's criticize everything.

I’m just saying if Daniel Radcliffe, the literal protagonist of the Harry Potter franchise since the age of ten years old, was able to disavow JK Rowling and move on from the HP universe then actually what the fuck is anyone else’s excuse. There is no one else on the planet who can say their entire childhood was HP more than that guy and he still cared about trans people more than the average tumblr user who says “we’re protesting by making all her characters queer and trans!!” like you can do better. You should do better.

"Your home serves you, you don't serve your home."

what does this mean? it means your home is a tool for sheltering and sustaining you as its primary function, not a bomb that you constantly have to be diffusing. it can feel that way! chores pile up, there's always something broken that needs attention, it can feel hard to relax in it, etc.

but there are things you can do to make it less that way!

and before I launch into my bullet point list of how to help your house serve you, remember that implementing dozens of changes overnight can shock your system. try new things out at a sustainable pace and they'll work much better!

Consider Barriers. What is preventing you from doing things more routinely? Does something take too many steps? Can you skip, remove, delegate, etc any of those steps? For example, learning how to properly load and operate a dishwasher can mean you skip the step of prewashing dishes. Maybe you accept any wrinkles in your clothes and can just throw them in a drawer without folding them. Maybe a housemate can be the trash captain who always does it or reminds others about it.

Consider time. When do you do certain tasks? Is that the optimal time you do it, or is that just when you've always done it and it's a habit? For me, I'm most motivated to clean and do chores immediately after work because I'm still in a flow state and taking a break grinds me to a halt. Dishes and laundry are easier to do in the early afternoon for me than they are in the morning or night, when I would try to do them. Maybe you work best first thing in the morning, or maybe having a tidy house is a part of getting better sleep so you clean as a night routine. Figure out when works for you!

Consider position. Where does an item need to be to best serve you? @/iorganizeeverything has a system they call Cousins/Coworkers/Family, where things go either with their Cousins (items that are similar but do different things, like chone cables and thumb drives and power cords etc), Coworkers (things that work together, like sports equipment or kitchen tools), or Family (things that are the same, like different batteries or paints). Knowing where best to put something makes it easier to access and serve you.

lastly, Consider individual needs. What are your personal accessibility needs? What are the needs of others in the house? Can something be changed to make something more accessible for you? Maybe a hamper is too hard to bend over and empty when it's time for laundry, would a laundry bag hanging on a hook be easier? Would a stool in the kitchen make cooking more enjoyable and allow you to have the energy to also clean up after? This is kind of like point 1, but more specifically to point to accessibility needs vs societal general expectations.

This is off the cuff and not terribly detailed, but it's just some stuff I've been kicking around in thinking about how best to use my home as a tool for me and not something I'm fighting in addition to paying an ass load of money for.
