If multiple players go after you at the same time, your penguins could get cut off on all sides. If two or more players decide to team up on you, you aren’t going to win the game. While you have a lot of impact on your own game since the game has little luck to it, the other players have a lot more say in your outcome than you would like. It is unlikely that one player will get significantly more tiles than the rest of the players so if you don’t get many of the high value tiles you will probably not win.
