In the heart of besieged Gaza, not even the only Catholic church was spared from the occupation’s fire. It was bombed, the house of prayer reduced to rubble, and its pastor— a man of peace who carried no weapon, only a message of love—was injured. Even the church bells, which once rang for peace, were silenced by the strike. The world trembled, and Netanyahu apologized. Trump condemned the act.

But here in Gaza, we are buried alive beneath the rubble. No one sees. No one apologizes. Did we need a cross on our homes for someone to say sorry? It seems that conscience only awakens when a church wall falls—not when a child from Gaza does. Gaza does not need apologies. Gaza needs someone to hear her scream.

My favorite grocery store cashier died a few months ago. I know this probably sounds like a bizarre thing to be sad about. Her name was Judith and I only saw her once or twice a week, and only while I was paying for groceries. But even now, months later, I think of her when I'm at the grocery store. She used to save the ends of receipt paper rolls when they only had a foot or two left on them and give them to me, which I never asked her to do, but the first time she did it she held one out to me and said "you look like someone who would make a craft out of this," and I laughed because she was right. I do save them to put in geocaches and letterboxes. Our small talk was about the weather and the weekend and aren't those cookies good? They're so expensive though. But it's worth it.

I'm just saying. If you ever sit around wondering whether you'd be missed if you disappeared off the face of the earth, the answer is probably yes, very much, and probably by more people than you think.

UN officials warned on 15 July that Israel’s months-long ‘Iron Wall’ operation in the occupied West Bank has caused the largest displacement of Palestinians since 1967, with 30,000 people forcibly uprooted since January and entire refugee camps emptied under military orders.

UN rights office spokesman Thameen al-Kheetan said the forced uprooting underway may constitute a crime under international law, stressing that “permanently displacing the civilian population within occupied territory amounts to unlawful transfer,” and depending on the circumstances, “could be tantamount to ethnic cleansing.” He said the campaign is “emptying large parts of the West Bank of Palestinians."

The UN said the offensive, launched in January, is impacting several northern refugee camps. Juliette Touma, spokeswoman for UNRWA, described it as “the longest since … the Second Intifada,” and warned it was causing “the largest population displacement of the Palestinians in the West Bank since 1967.”
