Once you've hit the range, try out the local 9-hole short course or pitch and putt course. These are great ways to keep learning about golf. The shorter holes take away the stress of having to hit the ball for 300 yards and let you learn how to chip and putt.
After you have completed the steps above, you can consider going to an 18-hole golf course. You don't have to keep scorecards. The best way to approach your first 18-hole course on an course is to use it as a learning experience. Try an attempt, return your ball back, and then proceed to the next hole.
This method takes the stress off having to hit perfect golf shots and will keep you and your group playing at a decent pace. Don't get discouraged when other golfers are following your. Ask them if they'd like to play that hole or next. This allows you to take a break and relax at the course.

The goal of golf is to put the ball in the hole in the shortest number of shots that are possible. Beginners usually are in one of two groups:
Let me take a swing on the course.
I'll be on the course until I'm sure my swing is perfect, then I'll head to the fairway.
Mixing these strategies is the best way to enhance your game. Spending time on the range can help you feel more confident with your swing and allow you to maintain regular contact with the ball.
Don't be fooled by anyone into believing that hitting the ball flawlessly on the range will improve your game. Range time is useful but you must take the time to play 9 holes on a short course when you can.
While playing, you'll discover the ball lying in 6 inches deep grass and a tree blocking your back swing - this is the first time that you realize golf isn't just about perfect swings on the course.
