Approach to Facial Expressions
I’ve been getting asked a lot recently how I draw expressions, so I tried to put together a little demonstration of my approach~
I noticed my expressions tend to come from a 2 main thought-processes
Acting
Asymmetry in the face
Acting
When you think about your character like an actor, it makes your consider their performance. The faces they make are performances of their expression.
The direction of the eyes can add a lot of information to a character’s acting, i.e. their expression.
Tumblr media
These are some random faces I threw together, each conveying a unique emotion or expression. A lot of the feeling or “life” you’re getting from these faces lies in the fact that the eyes are actively engaged.
Tumblr media
The smiling guy on the left is happy about something, so I pointed his eyes upward, giving him a lifted feeling.
The sad guy in the middle is casting his gaze downward, a pretty natural inclination when one is sad.
The mischievous looking dude on the right is giving us those classic, shifty eyes. He’s up to no good, I can tell.
So despite these characters all facing forward, the direction of their gaze can lend a lot to their performance.
Asymmetry
The next big thing I notice in my approach to making expressions, is asymmetry.
Tumblr media
Have you ever drawn a character facing forward, and then spent ages trying to get both eyes to look exactly like each other?
Well don’t waste your time.
Interesting expressions come from the nuance that occurs when the face isn’t perfectly symmetrical.
Tumblr media
I notice I use this tactic when I’m trying to portray emotions that are a little more complex than just the basics (sad, happy angry, etc…)
But for this guy up on the left there, I pinched the right side of his face more than the left. It changes the expression from “sad” to something a little more complex, like concern, or worry, or even guilt.
The angry dude in the middle is so pissed he’s grinding his jaw, judging from the hiked up upper-left lip.
The confused guy on the right is a little scandalized, or maybe he’s hurt, what with that up-turned left eyebrow and slight squint in his left eye.
So when you sit down to draw a big, expressive face, try playing with different eyebrow shapes (yes, I’m giving you permission to commit dreamworks eyebrows. Sue me.) Try one straight, and one curved. One arched, and one dipping up inquisitively.
This asymmetry can also be split horizontally, too.
Tumblr media
You can get a mix of interesting emotions by mixing and matching different elements of an expression (eyebrows, mouth, eyes… areas of focus of the face, basically.)
To prove a point, I used the same set of eyes and eyebrows for three faces, and just changed the acting in the mouth.
Tumblr media
three very different faces. We have expressions ranges from anguish, to guilty-delight, all the way to disgust.
Hope this was helpful!

I’m not proud of myself and I don’t want you to be it  I’ve been watching people adding memes with that one specific Drake and Josh scene and drawing it but I’ve seen no one doing an animatic of it so I gotta do it by myself
Patreon | Ko-fi | Deviantart | Youtube |Instagram | Twitter | Tapas (active in future) /reblogs are really appreciated since I’ve been working on this for the whole day

Disney’s Comic Strip Artist’s Kit by Carson van Osten.
You might know these already, but it is such good stuff I don’t think anybody minds if I share it here again. These hand-outs were meant as a way to get beginning artists working on the Disney comics to overcome some recurring drawing problems.
I found this on Mark Kennedy’s awesome blog: Temple of the Seven Golden Camels. Hence the ‘To Mark’ dedication on the fist page which, I guess, features some pretty sound advice for any artist:
“Just keep drawing my friend… Draw like the wind!”

Submission: “I’m not one of the previous anons, but i think the problem is that there’s not enough space? For example, the head can be too small for the faces, everything can be a bit too close to each other and some poses and actions are a bit hard to read. What i’m trying to say is that they lack clarity. I remember a Spongebob storyboarder having a few tips on that:

Hope you don’t take this the wrong way,i love your content :)”
Response: OH!!!! OH THIS ONE this one is good. thank you very much I’ll keep that in mind
