Landscape with a cabin practice
Tumblr media
Haven't practiced landscapes/nature for a very long time. Last time it was from a Bob Ross tutorial, whom my art teacher doesn't like at all, but I disagree and find his method really good andeasy. Especially for someone who's just beginning. Plus they're less frustrating than faces/poses/characters, so I guess I'm here now.

Practice with colored light source
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Technique:
First I applied the color mixing between the base color of the sphere and the light source (third sphere). Then I added bounching light from the background/environment in the shadowy area, which is where this type of light shows up (fourth sphere). I also added the Subsurface scattering zone between the light and dark area and blended it. The color is something between these two (fifth sphere). I would recommend Marco Bucci on Youtube for tutorials on how these colors mix and which type of light/shadow appears where.
Thoughts:
I have mostly practiced on faces and poses with lineart. I'm still early on environment and backgrounds but I also haven't practiced on coloring and how these different types can create a realistic looking face, clothe etc. I was also pretty scared of touching this aspect of drawing but I know it's really necessery for leveling up. If I keep drawing faces with just some tone changes my art will remain stale.
I've also had some bad art block for the past 1+ month. A combination of both me being scared of moving to art aspects that myself had convinced me I wouldn't be able to pull off, as well as family issues. But yesterday I've "forced" myself to do something about it. I've searched online for some advice and the best I could find was to start small. No pressure of trying to draw a portrait that already has all these techniques I'm not familiar with. A small step is always the beginning, a motivation to help you out of that loop. So I decided I would start with these simple spheres. And honestly, I'm feeling motivated after finishing this. Trying to go big right fromthe start might not only help you with improving your technique, but also make you even more dissapointed since the brain tells you "See, you can't do this"

Cloud vs Universe

Second Version because the colors from tablet show differently on pc
Tumblr media
There was a cloud that wanted to touch the Universe. It climbed higher than the rest and its vapors would soon dissolve. But for its brief existence it witnessed.

I wanted a realistic skin tone but it turned out pinkish. Still better than the muddy pallet that my previous attempts would end up to lol

Still Life on charcoal
Tumblr media
First time using charcoal. I didn't expect to like it but I actually did. I think it's a great way to practice the tones because unlike with the pencil, you can't rely on being precise with your lines and you have to start noticing all of the different shadow blocks/patches. I had some help with the cherries on the right vase (that was the hardest part), as well as with using the technique of different types of strokes all over the painting, because with charcoal it will turn out to be a shadow blur if you try to render like with pencil.

YELLOW VOLCANO
My first attempt ever at digital drawing. I had no idea how even the windows on Krita work and I didn't remember how to use the brushes/select tools etc well either. I have only been drawing traditionally and with a pencil over the years and I'm not familiar with using colors and how their shading works. So starting was a tad scary for me, as I tend to get discouraged very easily and feel like I'll never make it. Even though I know failing is very normal, especially when you're starting. But surprisingly, I like the result here despite it being more on the vague side and not very "accurate" as I like my drawings to be. But with colors I think the best strategy is to start off more "vague" to get yourself familiarized with them when you're a beginner.
From a technical point, I'll have to mention the Adjust Overlay Burn Brush that gave this really cool red touch on the yellow grass and at the bottom of the fire. It made the transition smooth and realistic and helped with adding a detail. Other brushes I used were for the black spots in the sky, the rock (the bottom right), and the grass. I left the white areas next to the black area like that, so they give the effect of a horizon behind the flame.
