George Washingtoad was a Toad in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! in The Koopas Are Coming! The Koopas Are Coming!. Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad helped him fight King Koopa and his Koopa Troop. He is a general for the thirteen Mushroom Colonies.

He is an obvious spoof of George Washington, the revolutionary war general and first president of the United States of America. Also, unlike all the Toads in the cartoon, he has hair and a nose.

Nastaran Kolestani is a transgender woman and refugee from Iran who came to America with her partner in life to escape the backlash from her family and Iranian culture. Nastaran was accused of murdering her partner at their apartment in Twin Falls, Idaho and sentenced to prison for 18 years to life only 7 months after arriving in the US. She survived a subsequent self-inflicted gunshot wound to her head in a botched attempt to take her own life moments after the death of her partner on August 25th, 2008. For the past 6 years, she has been adamant that the death of 29 year old Ehsan Velayati Kababian, her lover, was an accident despite an eye witness account. The case never went to trial because Nastaran accepted a plea bargain that waived her right to any future appeals. The ACLU and members of the LGBT community have taken her case to heart because her incarceration shows a lack of justice, in that such a plea bargain is said to be “unlawful and unusual” (Gina Morvay). She has suffered abuse in the prison system and from the media coverage of the case because of her gender identity. In addition to this, she endured severe culture shock upon arrival in the states. Her lack of understanding of the English language and American culture was the linchpin of her conviction. The documentary, called Nastaran (meaning rose in Farsi), explores the saga of her life, from growing up in Iran in a very repressed environment to her relocation to Twin Falls, Idaho, also a very conservative town.

It has been revealed that a U.S. drone strike accidentally killed two innocent Al Qaeda hostages on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in January 2015. One of the victims was an American man, Warren Weinstein, and the other victim was an Italian man, Giovanni Lo Porto. Both were aid workers in Pakistan. Obama held a speech for them at the White House on Thursday this week, condemning the drone strike that killed them and taking full responsibility for their deaths. Would Obama tell the public that one of his drones killed a young Afghan boy in Nangarhar, Afghanistan the same month Warren and Giovanni were killed? Would he tell them that another five Afghans were killed by one of his drones in Kapisa, Afghanistan that same month, whom locals claim were civilians? Would he tell them that Gul Nawaz, a 75-year old refugee from Pakistan who fled to Khost, Afghanistan was killed in a drone strike in Khost last month? No. Over the years I’ve learned that the Afghans and Pakistanis (and others) killed by American forces are never worth apologizing for (not that it would do much, but at least it’s an acknowledgement). That’s why you rarely get to know their names and stories, they’re just labeled as ‘collateral damage’.
