My Evaluation of My Work
The Theme of My Project was Pyschedelics in London. My chosen Artists were Wes Wilson, Heinz Edelmann, The Art Nouveau Movement, Pop Art Salvador Dali, Surrealism and many more stated in this blog.
I wanted to convey the message that London is still psychedelic throughout the years as continues to be. I believe I was successful in conveying that image.
The artists work influenced me, all together to create these designs and develop new found styles that I could do. I think I would of loved to get into the summer of Love period more and explore that era to create further designs.
I think that movement was very important in creative history. Also linking The Summer of love with Art Nouveau could of made for some great designs
I believe my work was successful. I tried a range of different styles to express psychedelic work and I would of loved to go down surreal imagery more If I had used my time more efficiently.
I think my work changed immensely throughout the project, as I hadn’t decided what routes to take and I wanted to try different things. This created an interesting outcome as every experiment is different but psychedelic and surreal in someway.
I responded to the theme well I went into depth with the research and found out many pieces of work I hadn’t seen before or known about. This research has definitely made me gain more knowledge in this type of work.
My skills have developed as I haven’t really used illustrator before, maybe once or twice so I was also surprised that I could actually create some decent illustrations with it. And I also want to learn more about it in the future as it is a great tool.
I think it was a challenge for me to use very vibrant colours in my images, but I think they came out successful In the end.
I can definitely see the development in my designs throughout the blog as I started off very basic, not even trying to touch colours and really get into vibrant illustrations although that would conflict with my project because that’s not what it is about.
I think my work changed immensely throughout the project, as I hadn’t decided what routes to take and I wanted to try different things. This created an interesting outcome as every experiment is different but psychedelic and surreal in someway.

I think I Lost My Head
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this design, I used the famous silly walk image of John Lennon, and create this image. I call it, Lost His head. I used the same effects as the previous experiments, invert, solarise played around the the colours, the brightness and contrast of them and of course oil paint creating a more merged effect.
I think this image was really successful it definitely created the Lost My Head in drugs effect which is what I was going for. If I had more time I would definitely try these effects on loads more images and experiment more with it.

The Psychedelic Soldiers  - Protect and Serve
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With these illustrations I experimented with the colours on abode photoshop. And then I inverted the colours creating this very vibrant but dark effect to create contrast between the characters.
They are suppose to serve and protect, but I perceived them in a dark but vibrant light to create a euphoric atmosphere, but also a mysterious atmosphere as-well.
I call these experiments the psychedelics soldiers.

Let’s Go For A Walk
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I started playing with colours on photoshop in this illustration and seeing what I can bring to life using colour and different effects.
This image was inspired by Walt Disney’s The Flowers and Trees animation

The English Experiments
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For my next experiment, I started looking at being British and things you would consider the stranger side. then I found these Iconic photos of the Beatles that inspired me to start a new experiment
Also I was looking at The Beefeaters in London, and what they do. That their job is to protect and serve, which I found interesting because nowadays they don’t seem to be doing much.
From them images I started to create illustrations on abode illustrator, putting my own twist on them. I started to draw them cartoon like holding mushrooms and flowers as swords. As you can see one of them has a sword hand as well.
I thought these guys also resemble police officers because they kind of represent the same thing to protect and serve. Which is why one of them also looks like a pig. As some police as referred to as pigs by the youth. Because they abuse their power.
So I made them look a bit like creatures holding these psychedelic drugs, and gripping them.
At the moment there is a lot going on in the world, many protests about black lives matter I thought I could also kind of incorporate this in this image as well as the psychedelics.
to represent each image but with my own pyschedelic twist.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this image it was inspired by The Beatles walking on Abbey Road. I then watched a Disney video called The Trees and Flowers, and I was inspired by the  moving images of the park coming to life and created my own journey through the park whilst the main character in the image has a head full of acid.
Tumblr media
In This image I was inspired by John Lennon’s silly walk image, and created a rough illustration of him walking around happy-go- lucky on drugs, with this colourful rainbow around him. Also patterns as hands.
Looking like he is sort of in another world.

Boris Fever
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Boris Fever - I created this illustration of Boris because when I first started my project I wanted my psychedelic work to be based on London, and trippy images of London and create kind of almost British psychedelic work.
I think my work has changed from what ideas I originally had in the beginning. At the moment with the virus going on I thought Boris would be the perfect advocate for my new experiment, Since he has been heavily involved in the coronavirus with his confusing speeches trying to guide us through this virus.
So I tried something new with this image. I drew him on illustrator, and then at first starting playing around with the colours, and experimenting like how I experimented with the others mostly but I wanted to try something new. Something that defines the virus and the involvement more.
And then I remembered I took a photograph of a virus warning, and how to stop the spread of it early in my research which was perfect. So then I used my photo and emerged it into the illustration of Boris.
Then I started to play around with different effects again on photoshop to make it look more neon and psychedelic. I used solarise, invert and oil paint to create these experiments of him.
I think that these were successful and his illustration fit well, with the warning of the virus. Then I added my own spin on it with the colours and effects.

The Gang - This is an illustration I create of the Beatles , drawing loser lines to create distorted and strange faces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In These experiment images, It started off a a quick sketch png of the Beatles. I drew them very lose with fragile lines and a weak hand. To create a different type of experiment rather than me actually concentrating on the illustration itself.
I thought what if I made them look different by using looser lines and see what I can create. I think some of these images are successful and some aren’t. I got too carried away with the experimentation here and went a bit over board with the colours and layering rather than actually focusing on the basics of the image.
I used the illustration of the Beatles gang to then create borders and the main Beatle, and experimenting with colour, solarise and the oil paint effect.
I feel like I could of made this graphic better if I kept it more simple as the original illustration I drew was very basic. I think I turned it into a mess with too much imagery on the page and should of made it more subtle.
However, I believe it still does the job of giving off psychedelic vibes.

These are some of the experiments/images I created while using these Beatles illustrations
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After I played around with the colour scheme I started to look at positioning, and how I can create an effect from positioning multiple faces.
After I positioned them all together, I started to play with the colours again and with solarise and invert. To create different versions. then I wanted to try something new on it so I used liquify and distorted each face differently, by dragging eyes down and mouths. Making them look as if they give the observer the effect that they are tripping. and that they are seeing distorted faces.
I then started to use the oil paint effect and emboss, to give it the in and out of reality look. I think that adding these effects definitely enhanced the high look. Then I started to play around with the brightness, contrast, trace contour and colour range in the experiments.
When I finalised a couple of experiments I added a border to make it stand out more to contrast with the colours, and look more professional.
I definitely think that I was going for a surrealist look in these experiments, with the faded but in and out of life mentality. A psychedelic surreal look. However I was also inspired by Pop Art and wanted to create something similar in my style.

I started looking at people that used psychedelics or were inspired by psychedelics and started to illustrate them and create colourful images, people like the Beatles and others, these are experiments of the Beatles and colour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With these experiments I started playing with the colours and effects on photoshop like solarise and invert to change the colours a bit, and also oil paint effect.
Because of my other experiment with the colours, I thought I could do something similar with these. I got the idea that these squares reminded me of pop art, with the colourful images and the shape of it. So I went ahead and experimented with them more.

For This illustration, I researched hippies and noticed a lot of them have large beards so I focused on the beard in the illustration. I then had the idea to put little pills in his beard that looked like little lsd love heart sweets and other drugs.
Then I started adding colours and mixing them in using oil paint filter on photoshop. constantly experimenting with different colours and the invert, solarise and liquify effects.
In my 7th experiment image, I focused on the beard and the pills more and made it look like it was moving giving it a flowing effect, by using liquify to melt the bills into the beard. I think using that effect was successful. Some of the pills came out well and started to look like little faces and eyes in his beard.
I think this experiment was successful as I was trying to give the effect that he is tripping through the image. Through the experimentation and colours I believe I gave him the psychedelic look I was going for.
The flowing Beard was inspired by The Art Nouveau style, with their flowing beautiful hair and patterns. I was trying to give it a similar effect.

After those images, I realised that my illustrations look better in colour and that encouraged me to do more illustrations and play with colour effects. I started creating a lot of colourful experiments.
The colour and my illustrations worked very successful together I think. I used solarise, invert, brightness, contrast, trace contour and oil paint effect on different illustrations. To see if I could get the colour to merge from different filters and effects, to see what they could create.
I enjoyed playing around with the John Lennon illustration, and creating different effects with it and colours in particular.

In these images. I started to play around with the background and images and see how they work together. At first using the colour of the background darkish silvery colour, and placed my illustrations in white around it.
At first I thought it was a good start. but I didn’t really know where to go with it, I was lost for a bit, and afraid to use the colour on my images. but then I added random spontaneous colours. And I was quite  pleased the result.
The colour definitely enhanced my work, and creating an eye-catching lure. Which I was very happy about. I think I need to not be afraid of using colour in my work, because It can actually create very nice visuals.
I, then got excited and starting putting random illustrations everywhere and even filling the background with colour, rather than just the illustrations.

I seen this image in brixton, and thought it relates to the world we are in now. As the coronavirus has been all over the media everyday for more than a month or so. It is effecting everyone very badly.
But I do believe that the media were making people panic and making the virus seem more worst than it is.
I decided to take a picture of this image and somehow incorporate it into my work later on in an illustration or use as a background.
Tumblr media
Another experiment I also edited this one on photoshop a bit, playing around with the brightness, contrast and oil paint filters.
Tumblr media
In this photo, it is a image of me holding a corona bottle and my friends hand at the bottom of it making it look as if, the hand is actually inside the bottle from the angle But it is actually underneath it. Thus creating a surreal image.
Tumblr media
I actually started to experiment with surreal imagery as well by taking pictures from inside bottles to see what effect it would create to the naked eye, by taking the photo from the view of inside the bottle.
I also had another person look in the bottle opposite me so see if I could see them through the bottle and see what type of visuals that would create
I believe that it actually did create a surreal and distorted effect.
I want to experiment more with this type of imagery, but again I think I didn't have enough time to experiment with it more because I was more focused on creating psychedelic illustrations.

THE UNSEEN
In her series “The Unseen”, Lebanese photographer Lara Zankoul pushes the boundaries of photographic surrealism through her constructed life-size sets. Strictly through the use of her camera and with no digital manipulation, Zankoul creates dreamlike images where water is used to depict contrasting characteristics of the characters she photographs.
Each image captures a different human emotion and the dueling perspectives that can exist. Zankoul invites the viewer to investigate each image and attempt to determine which half holds the element of truth. – Juxtapoz
My Evaluation of the Artist
This Artist has incredible surreal photography and imagery. I am very fascinated with Surrealism. And I hope that I can also incorporate this type of style into my own work. However I have chosen so many different paths with this project, I think I was lacking time otherwise I would of went into surrealism more.

Hunter S. Thompson
https://www.britannica.com/biography/Hunter-S-Thompson
Hunter S. Thompson, in full Hunter Stockton Thompson, (born July 18, 1937, Louisville, Kentucky, U.S.—died February 20, 2005, Woody Creek, Colorado), American journalist and author who created the genreknown as gonzo journalism, a highly personal style of reporting that made Thompson a counterculture icon.
Thompson, who had a number of run-ins with the law as a young man, joined the U.S. Air Force in 1956. He served as a sports editor for a base newspaper and continued his journalism career after being discharged in 1957. In the following years he also wrote two autobiographical novels, but both were initially rejected by publishing houses; The Rum Diary eventually saw publication in 1998 (film 2011).
In 1965 Thompson infiltrated the Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang, an experience he recounted in Hell’s Angels (1967). The book led to writing assignments for Esquire, Harper’s, Rolling Stone, and other magazines. In addition to his irreverent political and cultural criticism, Thompson also began to attract attention for his larger-than-life persona, which was highlighted by drug- and alcohol-fueled adventures and a distaste for authority.
In 1970 Thompson introduced his subjective style of reporting with the article “The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved,” in which he was a central part of the story. A 1971 assignment for Sports Illustrated to cover a motorcycle race in Nevada resulted in perhaps his best-known work, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream(1972; film 1998), which became a contemporary classic and established the genre of gonzo journalism. First serialized in Rolling Stone, it documents the drug-addled road trip taken by Thompson (as his alter ego Raoul Duke) and his lawyer (Dr. Gonzo) while also discussing the end of the 1960s counterculture.
The book featured frenetic artwork by Ralph Steadman, who illustrated many of Thompson’s works. In Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail ’72 (1973), Thompson chronicled the 1972 presidential campaigns of George McGovern and Richard Nixon. Later works include The Great Shark Hunt (1979), Better Than Sex (1994), and Kingdom of Fear (2003). Thompson died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Different types of psychedelic drugs:
Hallucinogens are a class of drugs that cause profound distortions in a person's perceptions of reality, otherwise known as hallucinations. While under the influence of hallucinogens, users might see images, hear sounds or feel sensations that seem to be real but aren't.
Almost all hallucinogens contain nitrogen and are classified as alkaloids. Many hallucinogens have chemical structures similar to those of natural neurotransmitters (acetylcholine-, serotonin-, or catecholamine-like).
The most commonly abused hallucinogens are:
Marijuana
LSD
Mescaline
Psilocybin
PCP
DMT
Ayahuasca
Hallucinogens can be man-made, or they can come from plants or mushrooms or extracts from plants and mushrooms. Generally, they are divided into two types: classic hallucinogens (LSD) or dissociative drugs (PCP). Either type of hallucinogen can cause users to have rapid, intense emotional swings.
My Artist Evaluation:
I recently watched Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and was researching Mr Thompson. I think that he is a very smart journalist that took a wrong turn in Las Vegas. I was very inspired by the movie and how it depicted all the different drugs, hallucinations and feelings that went along with it.
He depicted the drugs in the right light, rather than thinking and reading what they would be like. He actually experienced it. This drug frenzy made me think about the unconscious mind and unlocking some aspects of the mind, can bring you to multiple dimensions and make you experience incredible things.
Although it was very risky, for him he went ahead with it. And made the movie based on his incredible experience. I became fascinated with the movie and how the brain can create hallucinations based on what you are thinking unconsciously.
