rogue-value:
Roselyn pinched at the bridge of her nose. Five souls. It could have been six, had Roxy not managed to survive this ordeal. Monster souls were incredibly weak compared to human souls. It would take the combined strength of every monster in the underground to amount to her, or even most young adults. A child though, was a different story. “We should do something, but I’m not convinced yet that telling people is the correct path forward.” “Roxy. Do you know what primary traits those souls had?” She quietly questioned. She was fighting back the fury she was feeling over the scenario. What kind of a sick person murders children?  “Uhhhh. Yea actually. Everythin except for Kindness ‘n determination was there. Another kid fell in recently. After me. Their soul is determined. So, if they end up dyin too. That’s six.”  Roselyn felt her stomach tie itself into knots. Not only was Asgore collecting these souls but he almost had one of every trait. Knowing that a determined child was down there gave her a little bit of hope however. If that child had any sort of luck in using the power of their soul, they’d be much harder to kill than most others would be. They could give themselves second, third, and fourth chances. As many as they needed to make things go right.  “You said they are desperate, and hurting. Why is that, Roxy?” Roselyn went on with her questions.  Roxy crossed her legs and frowned, falling silent. From a story context this was really fucked up. She knew that. She was tempted to tell them it didn’t actually matter so much, but she didn’t want to expose them to the fact that they were living in someone’s computer. She had to keep going on with this narrative.  “The king ‘n queen of monster kind had a son named Asriel. And that kid became friends with the first human child to ever fall through the barrier. The king and queen raised that kid as their own. But. Chara. That child. Became real ill. And ended up dyin. Their final wish was to see the flowers of their home village again. So Asriel took their soul and added it to his own, usin their combined power to pass through the barrier without breakin it, and took the kid’s dead body to the village.” Roxy was getting a little emotional now. Tears were forming at the corners of her eyes. She sniffled quietly and wiped at them. “The people in that village seein a monster carryin a dead kid became enraged. They thought Asriel killed Chara. So they killed Asriel. This sent the king and queen into a deep depression. Asgore swore to have vengeance against humanity both for starting a war with them and locking them behind the barrier, and also murderin his child. Fastforward many years, and we’re here now.”  Roselyn was dumbstruck by the tale, and how it was delivered. Was that really what happened? It wasn’t something she had much knowledge of, that was distant history. Before she was alive. She knew the circumstances of the war, and the creation of the barrier, but this was news to her. She reached out towards Roxy and placed a hand delicately on her shoulder.
Dave nodded, mutely. They needed to do something, but the possibility of wide-spread panic would only set them back from doing something productive and meaningful towards fixing the situation at hand.
It really didn’t help that Asgore had almost every single trait of souls at his disposal, and that another kid was down there. His own soul was like the kid’s - determined. The boy could only hope the child was able to use it to escape and stay alive down there.
Roselyn kept questioning her daughter and he simply watched and listened. He kept his eyes trained on the girl, listening intently to what Roxy was saying. In the middle he noticed the tears forming in the corners of her eyes and for a moment he moved to reach out, only placing his hands on his knees and gripping them tightly.
He had the same thought as the Purple Mage - was that really how it happened? Is that how the barrier came to be ? The imprisonment of monsters due to a misconception created by humans ? He was vaguely familiar with the legends, but nothing of this detail.
Moving a hand to push underneath his shades to rub at his eyes, he heaved a quiet sigh.
“This is just fucked up..”
So, really, what were they supposed to do now ?

Hal watched the scene, sadly the low res did not really allow him to deduce much, except that they gotten closer. Luckily the descriptions kicked in, so he knew what was going on. The woman hugged Roxy, there was a short dialog happening. Hal felt another tug at his stomach. All of this was so immoral even he felt it was downright wrong. He felt an urge to reach out for his meds again, but fought it for now, biting into his knuckles and rocking on the chair in front of the computer. The other guy, the mysterious Dave waved from his corner of the room. Weirdo. ‘At least someone there is more awkward than I am, which is an achievement.’ he texted Roxy again and then breathed out. ‘And well, since I can now apparently hack all devices, I do not see how that would be that much of a challenge. Also, I would say to say hi from me, but frankly, I assume they have enough on their mind as it is’
“Will you at the very least tell me what you were doing? Where you went? Some manner of explanation about this? You lost your memory, dear. It’s not safe for you to just walk out like that.” Roselyn questioned and fussed at her as she led Roxy towards the couches and offered her a seat.   Roxy breathed out a long drawn out sigh as she sat down and crossed her arms. “Had some loose ends that needed tyin up. Had to go back to the underground for a little bit.” Roselyn narrowed her eyes at Roxy. “Back to the underground? Are you insane? You just got back. How did you even manage to get out of the barrier not once, but twice? That wasn’t a risk you should have taken. You don’t have to worry about that place any more.” Roxy chewed on her lip, and looked down at her phone. She fired off a quick reply as she kept talking. ‘might as well give it a shot. idk what this all looks like to ya but if its gettin ya irritated might as well make use of whatcha can do rn right?’ “It’s cause of my soul mom. It’s weird. It ain’t bein blocked right by the barrier.” She fibbed. It was a half truth at least. In that her soul was weird and it could very easily have this property. She may even mod it in later to give her words some more truth to it. “But. Ugh. Look there’s somethin else that we really gotta be focusin on I had to go back n make damn sure about this. That it’s all still right.” Roselyn was looking displeased with Roxy’s attitude about heading back into the underground, but she remained silent for the moment to give her a chance to explain herself. “Asgore has five human souls ma. Collected from the kids that been fallin down through the barrier over the years. He’s just two away from becomin what amounts to a god and breakin that barrier.” Roselyn opened her mouth to speak, but words did not come out. She was having trouble processing what she had even just heard. The King of monsters has been slaughtering lost children? She was horrified. “They want out mom. They’re… they’re desperate. And hurtin.”
Dave watched the scene quietly and curiously. Roselyn was obviously distraught by her daughter’s antics. It didn’t help that she admitted in going back to Underground, again. Though at that, he too visibly stiffened. One was to accidentally fall into that place, another was to consciously seek it out, though he guessed she had reasons for it.
He perked up and unconsciously straightened up in his seat, waiting for Roxy to reveal said reason for her second visit to that place. The reveal made his hair on the back of his neck straighten, suddenly feeling his feet get cold. The reveal still had that effect on him, the second time didn’t lessen the impact of those words.
Five children, slaughtered. And their souls - collected with the intention to use as a key to break the barrier holding monsters from ascending up towards the world.
They’re desperate. They’re hurting.
Dave had questioned it previously, whether it had been right what their ancestors did to the monsters. It had never settled right within him, but knowing that the missing children who were unfortunate to fall into the Underground were dead now. So really, the situation was not getting any better for the monsters.
“..We should tell people about this, but. Setting a wide-spread panic wouldn’t be any better,“ he finally spoke up, rubbing the back of his neck. Another nervous tick.

Hal was away from all of the trouble, but it did not help to make him feel any more relaxed. Sure, the first shock of the revelation of all of this has passed, but neither attempts at meditation, sport or pills could really kill the tension in his muscles. Not until he will solve the mystery of it all. Were the people in Jericho bunch of Vis, were they souls trapped in weird-ass program made to torture them forever? The more time passed, less answers he had and more questions popped out. And how he hated being out of control and without a solution. His camera followed Roxy, there was some weird dissonance for second as she opened the door to Jericho, but it passed second later. There were a bunch of buildings, he never seen in the game before and couple of avatars that were as alien as Roxy at the start. It made nerves tug at his stomach once again, nausea introducing itself to his system again. He groaned and covered his mouth, shoving another gum into his mouth, chewing on it and enjoying the refreshing taste of mint on his tongue. Roxy moved into one of the buildings now, he watched the other two figures present inside, in silence, finally moving his phone up and typing out. ‘I see you fine, or as fine as those sucky graphics allow me. Man I am so tempted to invest into building whole new set of HD video for this.” Pause. “That your mom? Who is that dude?’
Roxy opened up the front door to Roselyn’s home and stepped inside. The noise caused Roselyn to peek up from the book she was reading and gaze at the direction of the sound. Somebody was here. When Roxy moved into view of Dave and Roselyn, she dropped her book onto the table and set her cup down as she got to her feet.  “Roxy? Where have you been?” She asked, her voice tense. She stepped around the table and immediately moved towards the girl. Roxy put her hands up and gave an awkward smile.  “Hey, hey it’s alright! I just, forgot somethin that I really needed to go ‘n take care of but I’m back now!” She didn’t know how else to explain this without getting into an even worse situation than she already was stuck with.  Roselyn pulled Roxy into a hug. “Please don’t just run off like that, I thought I lost you again.”  Hearing that hurt her a bit. She wrapped her arms around Roselyn and patted her back gently. “Relax ma, I’m tough.”  Reluctantly, Roselyn released Roxy from her grasp. Roxy took her phone and typed out a reply to Hal.  ‘wonder how hard thatd even b lmao. and yea thats my mama. and that other guy over there is dave i think. swordsdotcom’  She peeked over in Dave’s direction, and gave him a small wave.
Dave picked up on the noise as well, ceasing his nervous habits immediately and his eyes moved to glance in the direction of said noise. Somebody came into view, the shaded boy turning his face slightly to show attentiveness to the arrival. Seeing Roselyn react in such tense way only made his assumption of the girl being Roxy all the more concrete.
He watched the situation in high alert, Roselyn approaching her daughter and Roxy trying to diffuse the tense situation. The boy breathed out, only aware that he had held his breath until the moment when they hugged, relaxing just the slightest.
He waved back at her, though he was curious as to whom she was talking to on her phone. Still, he stayed quiet, unsure whether he should formally introduce himself to her or not, though he had an inkling that she recognized who he was anyways.

The last few days had passed in a nervous haze. Once he wrote that he needed to go out to breathe some fresh air, his feet had carried him to the abode of none other than the Purple Mage in question. Since then he had come around every single day, feeling a nervous tick in the back of his head just thinking about the woman’s daughter in question.
He was sitting on the other couch in Roselyn’s living room, his own glass of orange juice on the coffee table left untouched. He felt too wound up to do anything other than tapping his foot a bit too much and flipping his phone in his hand, red eyes hidden behind a pair of shades that stared off into distance.
Dave was a lot less discrete compared to Roselyn. Though it wasn’t only about Roxy finally coming back home, after being stuck in the Underground. There was something much more ominous and foreboding lurking in the back of his mind.
Two more souls.
And the thought of those five imprisoned and collected souls didn’t make his mood any better.
The boy kept checking his phone and the time displayed on it.
He sure hoped Roxy was on her way now.

It was about time for Roxy to return to Roselyn’s home after that momentary lapse to a less recognizable form. She was mostly glad that she managed to get out of there when she was transformed into a troll, it could have had disastrous consequences. She could have been mistaken for a monster and subsequently attacked for the misunderstanding.  This time though, she was not going to Jericho alone. She had Hal following along with her, an unseen game camera locked onto her where it would otherwise be attached to Frisk. No more smoke an mirrors surrounding that, it was time to show Jericho to Hal. She had her phone in her hand, making sure that the Tumblr messages were open to keep an open line of communication with Hal if he wanted to talk at all.  She made sure that she had everything she needed inside her inventory and then set off towards the nearest wall. She closed her eyes and envisioned a spot that was nearby Roselyn’s home. Just about a block away, a space between two buildings she saw on the way there last time. A door was created against the wall, and she took a breath. “Oookay! Here we go!” Roxy stepped through the door and out the other side. Hal’s view followed the transition to Jericho without incident. He could see the buildings that she was standing between from the top down, in the game’s standard pixelated and low detail style. She walked out to the sidewalk and took off towards Roselyn’s home. Roselyn meanwhile was sitting in her sizable living room’s second couch, a book opened in one hand and a cup of orange juice in the other. She was waiting, quietly. On the surface she looked perfectly calm, but anybody who knew her for any significant amount of time could tell that her nerves were frazzled. Roxy disappearing again like that shook her up pretty bad. For the sake of the company she was keeping at this moment she could not allow herself to display it openly. Dave didn’t need to be exposed to this.

this would legit b a non issue if the barrier could b fortified or somethin… but just like with its creation thats probs gonna take seven wizards of incredible power n skill to pull off in the first place
they probably didnt think that monsters would actually collect missing children souls and use them to break the barrier
