Where is Santiago Maldonado?

Yesterday, September 1st, it was a month since we’ve been wondering the same: Where’s Santiago Maldonado? In the face of this strong calling, the same cynical answer from the government and the impertinent manipulation of the media, I feel the need of writing this for others to know and join us in this fight for our rights, people from Argentina or other countries. We’re in a fight for out right to live a life without fear to protest for what’s ours. The right of being free.

Santiago Maldonado disappeared the past August 1st, during a protest in Cushamen, Argentina, which was carrying out by the Mapuche Community of that place. Witnesses assure that they’ve seen him being arrested by the national gendarmerie. We don’t know anything about him since then.

Context: On the south of my country it’s been taking place a dispute between the native people and the government of their provinces, because of the land where they live, even since this country was found. The Mapuche Community of Cushamen keeps a dispute since two years ago because of the lands obtained for the Benetton group, which they claim they’re theirs; based on this and the negative answer to dialogue, at the beginning of this year the Community alongside with other communities, started protests to support the cause, in front of which the government has responded with hard repressions where there have been serious injured and arrested people. They’ve also accused the protesters of being “terrorists” or delinquents. On June 28th, the Community leader, Facundo Jones Huala, was arrested, and marches and protests are followed, asking for his liberation. On August 1st, Santiago was on one of those protests, in which the gendarmerie carry out a violent and repressive operation, authorized and in the presence of the cabinet’s jefe of the Ministry of Security, Pablo Noceti. There’re at least three witnesses, which identities are protected, who claim to have seen Santiago being arrested. Until this day, nobody saw him again, and the government have even the intention of denying the participation of the gendarmerie on the disappearing of Santiago, or denying even the presence of Santiago in the protests.

The government has insisted on dissociate from the facts. In front of the many evidence which strengthen the hypothesis of Santiago being arrested and captive by the gendarmerie, the Ministry of Security denies to make the pertinent investigations, wasting time with nonsense.

What do I mean with all this? Why is it so important to the point I even take the work of telling this on other language? Why raising the voice for Santiago and his family? Yesterday we marched and had an act on the Plaza de Mayo, asking for the appearance of Santiago alive, asking for the State to take the responsibility, and it was shocking for me the atmosphere in which we all marched. A friend sent me a message reminding me to bring my ID, and told me what I must do if someone wants to arrest me, he told me to shout my name, so they can’t take me and try to hide the fact then, so others would listen to me and know where to look for me. I mean this government had been taking steps which takes us to protect ourselves from people who are supposed to bring us security. Instead, they answers us with plastic bullets and sticks, just because of raising the voice for our rights.

Why is this important? Because Santiago isn’t the onlyone. Because Julio López was one too, and Luciano Arruga, Maria Cash, the people who disappeare from their homes “everyday”, like the Security Minister, Patricia Bullrich, said, like it was something normal and softed the fact that her gendarmerie made a boy disappeare. I say this because this could be me, one of my sisters, one of my beautiful friends, we all go out every day to do what we have to do for living, and we also believe we have the right to protest and raise out voices when we see our rights are violated. I say this because they’ve been repressing us, they’ve been wanting to shut our mouths, still in democracy, and because we can’t let the State to do this. Shut us, hurt us, kill us, and not taking responsibility for that. I say this because I’m here, at home, with my family, and where is Santiago? He should be doing the same, he should be surrounded by his beloved people, but where the fuck is he?

Maybe for you, who are reading this on the other side of the world, it’s not so relevant or this is so wrong written (I’m so sorry for that, you can correct me if you want to). But this is global. This is happening here, in the US, in Latin America, in Europe, in the East. Each place have different methods for their particular situations, there’re are places where the media call “terrorists” to all the Muslims to get rid of a war fomented by the groups they protect. Here the media call that way our native people. And with that, they justify the blood shed because of their guns and sticks. They justify wars in the name of the country, wars in which we don’t want to participate. The fight is always the same. It’s the same fight of the oppressed, of they who goes out to march because feels their rights violated. For being a woman, foreigner, LGBTIQ, for being of the working class, for having a different religion, but all these fights have something in common: We all want to be free. That’s why yesterday, one month later the disappearing of Santiago Maldonado, I marched for him, for my working family, for everyone who wants their rights to be respected, I marched for the disappeared people during the Latin-American dictatorships, for the disappeared people in democracy, for everyone else who thinks they should be able to live a life in peace. I’m asking for the appearance of Santiago Maldonado alive right now. The State is responsible. And never again. One more time, we shout Nunca Más.

Ayer, primero de Septiembre, hizo un mes desde que nos venimos preguntando lo mismo: ¿Dónde está Santiago Maldonado? Ante este llamado tan contundente, la misma respuesta cínica que nos da el gobierno y la fuerte manipulación mediática a la par, me veo en la necesidad de escribir para que otros, gente de mi país o de afuera, nos acompañen en esta lucha por nuestros derechos, el derecho de vivir una vida sin miedo a protestar por lo que nos corresponde. El derecho a ser libres.

Santiago Maldonado desapareció el pasado primero de agosto en el marco de una protesta en Cushamen junto a la Comunidad Mapuche del lugar. Testigos aseguran que lo vieron siendo detenido por la gendarmería nacional. Desde entonces no volvimos a saber de él.

Contexto: En el sur de mi país se viene llevando a cabo hace años la lucha entre pueblos originarios y los gobiernos de dichas provincias. La Comunidad Mapuche de Cushamen mantiene desde hace dos años una disputa por las tierras adquiridas por el grupo Benetton, que reclaman como propias; a raíz de esto y de la no respuesta al dialogo, desde principios de año se vienen realizando protestas de parte de la Comunidad y otras comunidades que apoyan la causa, ante lo cual el gobierno ha respondido con represiones duras en las cuales ha habido heridos de gravedad y detenidos, además de haber acusados de "terroristas" o delincuentes a los manifestantes. El 28 de junio de este año, el líder de la Comunidad, Facundo Jones Huala, es detenido. Se siguen marchas y protestas pidiendo su liberación, que fueron reprimidas brutalmente. El 1ro de agosto, Santiago estaba en una de esas protestas, en las cuales  la gendarmería realiza un violento operativo represivo, en presencia y autorizados por jefe de gabinete del Ministerio de Seguridad  Pablo Noceti. Hay al menos tres testigos cuya identidad es protegida, que aseguran haber visto a Santiago siendo detenido. Hasta el día de hoy, no lo volvieron a ver, e incluso tuvieron la intención de negar la participación de este organismo en la desaparición de Santiago Maldonado, o negar la presencia de Santiago en la protesta.

El gobierno ha insistido en desvincularse de los hechos. Ante la cantidad de pruebas que refuerzan la hipótesis de que Santiago fue detenido y lo mantiene cautivo la gendarmería, el Ministerio de Seguridad se niega a llevar a cabo las investigaciones correspondientes, perdiendo el tiempo con investigaciones sin sentido.

¿A qué voy con esto? ¿Por qué es importante a tal punto de que incluso me tomo el trabajo de contarlo en otro idioma? ¿Por qué levantar la voz por Santiago y su familia? Ayer realizamos una marcha y acto en Plaza de Mayo, pidiendo la aparición con vida de Santiago, pidiendo que el Estado se haga responsable, y me resultó fuerte el ambiente en el que fuimos a marchar. Un amigo me manda un mensaje recordándome que lleve mi DNI, que lo que tengo que hacer si me detienen es gritar mi nombre, para que me escuchen, para que no me lleven y quieran ocultarlo, para que sepan dónde tienen que buscarme. Voy a que este gobierno ha tomado medidas que nos llevan a tener que protegernos de gente que se supone tiene que brindarnos seguridad, y en cambio nos responden con balas de goma y palos, por levantar la voz en pos de nuestros derechos.

¿Por qué es importante? Porque Santiago no es el único. Porque fue Julio López, Luciano Arruga, Maria Cash, la gente que desaparece de sus casas "todos los días", como dijo la propia Ministra de Seguridad, Patricia Bullrich, como si se tratara de algo normal que suavizara el hecho de que su gendarmería desapareció a un pibe. Lo digo porque podría ser yo, mis hermanas, alguno de mis hermosos amigos, que salimos todos los días a hacer lo que tenemos que hacer, y que también creemos que tenemos derecho a protestar cuando vemos que nuestros derechos son violentados. Lo digo porque nos vienen reprimiendo, nos vienen queriendo callar, aún en democracia, y porque no podemos permitir que el Estado se dé este lujo. De silenciarnos, de golpearnos, de matarnos, y no hacerse responsables.

Tal vez a vos, que estás leyendo esto en otro lado del mundo, no te parezca relevante. Pero esto es global. Esto pasa acá, en Estados Unidos, en todo Latinoamérica, en Europa, en Oriente. Cada uno tiene su método, en algunos lados los medios llaman “terroristas” a todos los musulmanes para desvincularse de una guerra fomentada por los grupos que protegen. Acá llaman de esa manera a nuestros pueblos originarios. Y con eso, justifican la sangre derramadas por sus balas y palos. Justifican guerras en nombre de una patria, guerras en las que no queremos participar. La lucha siempre es la misma. Es la misma lucha de todo oprimido, de aquel que sale a marchar porque siente sus derechos violentados. Por ser mujer, por ser extranjero, por ser LGBTIQ, por ser de las clases bajas, por tener una religión diferente, pero todas esas luchas tienen algo en común: Todos queremos ser libres. Por eso ayer, a un mes de la desaparición de Santiago Maldonado, marché por él, por mi familia laburante, marché por todo aquel que quiere que se respeten sus derecho, marcho por los desaparecidos durante las dictaduras Latinoamericanas, por los desaparecidos en democracia, por todo aquel que crea que tiene el mismo derecho que el resto de la humanidad a vivir en paz. Pido la aparición con vida ya de Santiago Maldonado. El Estado es responsable. Y nunca más. Una vez más, gritamos Nunca Más.
