Never watched a single episode of Seinfield, so for me, when I hear the word "Kramer", my mind doesn't go towards that guy, but Kramer Associates from the novel "For Want of a Nail"; a Mexican transnational monopolistic corporation that after being rivals with the Mexican government, relocate to the far east; on where they don't just hold the headquarters for basically the company that owns literally a sixth of the planet, but also where Mexicans in the early 60's detonate the first nuclear bomb.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
March 11, 2025
Heather Cox Richardson
Mar 12, 2025
The stock market continued to fall today. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell another 478 points, or 1.14%; the S&P 500 fell almost 0.8%; and the Nasdaq Composite fell almost 0.2%. The S&P 500 briefly held its own in trading today, but then Trump announced on his social media platform that he was going to double the tariffs on steel and aluminum from the new 25% rates to a 50% rate on Canada and might increase tariffs to “permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada.”
Stocks fell again.
Unable to admit that he might be wrong, President Donald Trump is doubling down on the policies that are crashing the economy. In addition to his tariff threats, he also reiterated that “the only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State,” an outrageous position that he suddenly began to advance after the 2024 presidential election and which has Canadians so furious they are boycotting U.S. goods and booing the Star-Spangled Banner.
More than 100 top business leaders met with Trump today to urge him to stop destabilizing what had been a booming economy with his on-again-off-again tariffs. Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics, told Jeff Stein and Isaac Arnsdorf of the Washington Post that in private, “[b]usiness leaders, CEOs and COOs are nervous, bordering on unnerved, by the policies that are being implemented, how they’re being implemented and what the fallout is. There’s overwhelming uncertainty and increasing discomfort with how policy is being implemented.”
The extreme unpredictability means that no one knows where or how to invest. Market strategist Art Hogan told CNN’s Matt Egan, “This market is just blatantly sick and tired of the back and forth on trade policy.” Yesterday, Delta Air Lines cut its forecasts for its first-quarter revenue and profits by half, a sign of weakening corporate and consumer confidence and concerns about the safety of air travel. Today, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines cut their forecasts, and American Airlines forecast a first-quarter loss.
When he talked to reporters, Trump reasserted that he intends to do what he wants regardless of the business leaders’ input. “Markets are going to go up and they’re going to go down, but you know what, we have to rebuild our country. Long-term what I’m doing is making our country strong again.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt advised, “If people are looking for certainty, they should look at the record of this president.”
Not everyone will find that suggestion comforting.
Trump backed off on his threat to raise the tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%, but went ahead with his threat to place 25% tariffs on all imported steel and aluminum products. Those tariffs took effect at midnight.
In the face of his own troubles, Trump’s sidekick billionaire Elon Musk is also escalating his destructive behavior. Yesterday Musk’s social media platform X underwent three separate outages that spanned more than six hours. Lily Jamali and Liv McMahon of the BBC reported that Oxford professor Ciaran Martin, former head of the United Kingdom’s National Cyber Security Center, said that the outages appear to have been an attack called a “distributed denial of service,” or DDoS, attack. This is an old technique in which hackers flood a server to prevent authentic users from reaching a website.
"I can't think of a company of the size and standing internationally of X that's fallen over to a DDoS attack for a very long time," Martin said. The outage "doesn't reflect well on their cyber security." Without any evidence, Musk blamed hackers in Ukraine for the outages, an accusation Martin called “pretty much garbage.”
Four days ago, another of Musk’s SpaceX rockets exploded after takeoff, and now SpaceX’s Starlink internet service is facing headwinds. In February, Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim canceled his collaborations with Starlink after growing tensions with Musk culminated with Musk alleging on X that Slim is tied to organized crime. The loss of that deal cost Musk about $7 billion in the short term, but more in the long term as Slim will work with European and Chinese companies in 25 Latin American countries rather than Starlink. Slim has said he would invest $22 billion in those projects over the next three years.
Also in February, after U.S. negotiators threatened to cut Ukraine’s access to the 42,000 Starlink terminals that supply information to the front lines, the European Commission began to look for either government or commercial alternatives. The European Commission is made up of a college of commissioners from each of the 27 European Union countries. It acts as the main executive branch of the European Union.
On Sunday, Musk posted: “[M]y Starlink system is the backbone of the Ukrainian army. Their entire front line would collapse if I turned it off.” Poland pays for about half the Starlink terminals in Ukraine, about $50 million a year. Poland’s minister of foreign affairs, Radosław Sikorski, responded that “if SpaceX proves to be an unreliable provider we will be forced to look for other suppliers.” “Be quiet, small man,” Musk replied. “You pay a tiny fraction of the cost. And there is no substitute for Starlink.”
After all the tariff drama with Canada, last week Ontario also cancelled a deal it had with Starlink.
But perhaps the biggest hit Musk has taken lately is over his Tesla car brand. On February 6, Musk’s younger brother Kimbal, who sits on Tesla’s board, sold more than $27 million worth of shares in the company. Tesla chair Robyn Denholm sold about $43 million worth of Tesla stock in February and recently sold another $33 million. Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja has sold $8 million worth over the past 90 days. Yesterday, board member James Murdoch sold just over $13 million worth of stock.
Fred Lambert of Electrek, which follows the news about electric vehicles and Tesla, noted that Tesla stock dropped 15% yesterday, “down more than 50% from its all-time high just a few months ago.” “Tesla insiders are unloading,” he concluded.
Tesla sales are dropping across the globe owing to the unpopularity of Musk’s antics, along with the cuts and data breaches from his “Department of Government Efficiency.” Protesters have been gathering at Tesla dealerships to express their dismay. While the protests have been peaceful, as Chris Isidore of CNN reports, there have also been reports of vandalism. Tesla owners are facing ridicule as protesters take out their anger toward Musk on his customers, and at least one competitor is working to lure consumers away from Musk’s brand by offering a discount to Tesla owners.
Trump has jumped to Musk’s defense, posting just after midnight this morning that “Elon Musk is ‘putting it on the line’ in order to help our Nation, and he is doing a FANTASTIC JOB! But the Radical Left Lunatics, as they often do, are trying to illegally and collusively boycott Tesla, one of the World’s great automakers, and Elon’s ‘baby,’ in order to attack and do harm to Elon, and everything he stands for. They tried to do it to me at the 2024 Presidential Ballot Box, but how did that work out? In any event, I’m going to buy a brand new Tesla tomorrow morning as a show of confidence and support for Elon Musk, a truly great American.”
Indeed, today Trump used the office of the presidency to bolster Musk’s business. Teslas were lined up at the White House, where Trump read from a Tesla sales pitch—photographer Andrew Harnik caught an image of his notes. And then the same man who gave a blanket pardon to those convicted of violent crimes related to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol called those protesting at Tesla dealerships “domestic terrorists” and promised that the government would make sure they “go through hell.”
Trump and Musk appear to have taken the downturn in their fortunes by becoming more aggressive. Martin Pengelly of The Guardian noted that in the middle of Monday’s stock market plunge, Trump posted or reposted more than 100 messages on his social media channel. All of them showed him in a positive light, including reminders of the 2004 first season of the television show The Apprentice, in which Trump starred: a golden moment in Trump’s past when his ratings were high and the audience seemed to believe he was a brilliant and powerful businessman.
Today, egged on by Musk, Trump pushed again to take over other countries. He told reporters: "When you take away that artificial line that looks like it was done with a ruler…and you look at that beautiful formation of Canada and the United States, there is no place anywhere in the world that looks like that…. And then if you add Greenland…that's pretty good."
The Trump administration also announced today it was cutting about half the employees in the Department of Education. The Senate confirmed Linda McMahon, who has little experience with education, to head the department on March 3 by a party-line vote. Shutting down the department "was the president's mandate—his directive to me," McMahon told Fox News Channel host Laura Ingraham. McMahon assured Ingraham that existing grants and programs would not “fall through the cracks.”
But when Ingraham asked her what IDEA stood for—the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act—she wasn’t sure, although she knew it was “the programs for disabled and needs.” Ingraham knew what the acronym meant but assured McMahon that after 30 years on the job, she still didn’t know all the acronyms. McMahon replied: “This is my fifth day on the job and I’m really trying to learn them very quickly.”
Musk lashed out at Arizona senator Mark Kelly on social media yesterday, after Kelly posted pictures of his recent trip to Ukraine and discussed the history of Russia’s invasion, concluding “it’s important we stand with Ukraine.” Musk responded: “You are a traitor.”
Kelly, who was in the Navy for 25 years and flew 39 combat missions in the Gulf War before becoming an astronaut, responded: “Traitor? Elon, if you don’t understand that defending freedom is a basic tenet of what makes America great and keeps us safe, maybe you should leave it to those of us who do.”

Celebrating the Day of the Dead

The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is a vibrant and meaningful celebration deeply rooted in Mexican culture, dating back thousands of years to Indigenous traditions. Every year, from October 31st to November 2nd, families across Mexico and beyond come together to honor their deceased loved ones, celebrating life, death, and the enduring bond between the living and the dead.
This festival, while often misunderstood, is far from being a somber or morbid occasion. Instead, it's a joyous, colorful event, filled with laughter, music, and love. It is a celebration of life, the legacies of the departed, and the unbreakable connection between generations. In this post, we'll explore the origins, customs, and significance of the Day of the Dead, and why it continues to resonate around the world.
Origins of the Day of the Dead
The roots of the Day of the Dead can be traced back to the pre-Columbian civilizations of Mesoamerica, including the Aztec, Maya, and Toltec cultures. These ancient peoples held a cyclical view of life and death, seeing them as interconnected parts of existence. Rather than fearing death, they believed that the dead remained with the living in spirit, and that death was not an end but a transition to another form of life.
The Aztecs, in particular, had a month-long festival dedicated to the goddess Mictecacihuatl, known as the "Lady of the Dead," who ruled over the afterlife. After the Spanish colonization in the 16th century, Catholic influences merged with Indigenous beliefs, resulting in the modern version of the Day of the Dead, which coincides with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2).
Key Dates and Their Significance
The celebration of Día de los Muertos spans several days, each with its own unique significance:
October 31st (All Hallows' Eve or Halloween): This day marks the beginning of the celebration. It is believed that on this night, the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest, allowing spirits to return to the earthly realm.
November 1st (Día de los Angelitos): Known as the Day of the Little Angels, this day honors children who have passed away. Families believe that the spirits of deceased children (los angelitos) return to visit their families. Offerings and altars are prepared with toys, sweets, and food that children enjoyed during their lifetime.
November 2nd (Día de los Difuntos): The final and most important day is dedicated to adult spirits. Families visit cemeteries, bringing food, drinks, and gifts to their loved ones' graves, decorating them with marigold flowers and candles.
Altars (Ofrendas): A Central Tradition
One of the most recognizable elements of the Day of the Dead is the creation of ofrendas, or altars, which are set up in homes and cemeteries to honor the deceased. These altars are not meant for worship but to welcome the spirits back to the land of the living, offering them comfort and joy during their brief return.
An ofrenda typically includes:
Photographs of the deceased, serving as a visual reminder of those being honored.
Cempasúchil (Marigold flowers), often referred to as the flower of the dead, believed to guide spirits with their bright color and strong scent.
Candles to light the way for the spirits.
Pan de muerto, a sweet bread baked specifically for the occasion. Personal items that the deceased enjoyed during their lives, such as favorite foods, drinks, or objects.
Sugar skulls (calaveras), which are intricately decorated to represent the vitality of life.
These altars are typically adorned with papel picado (colorful, perforated paper banners) that add a sense of celebration and festivity. Families might also include small crosses or religious images as a nod to the Catholic influence on the holiday.
Visiting Cemeteries: A Family Affair
On November 2nd, families flock to cemeteries to clean and decorate the graves of their loved ones. This communal act is a powerful reminder of the connection between the living and the dead, and the enduring presence of those who have passed away. It's common to see grave sites adorned with cempasúchil flowers, candles, and photographs, while families gather to share food, reminisce, and even listen to music.
In many regions, families will stay in the cemetery overnight, creating a festive atmosphere filled with warmth and laughter. This act of remembrance turns the cemetery from a place of sorrow into a space of joy, where life and death coexist harmoniously. Food and Symbolism
Food plays a central role in the Day of the Dead celebrations, and many of the dishes prepared have symbolic meaning. Some of the most popular foods include:
Pan de muerto: This traditional sweet bread is flavored with orange blossom and anise and often decorated with bone-shaped designs on top, representing the cycle of life and death.
Tamales: A favorite across Mexico, tamales are often prepared as offerings and shared among family members.
Mole: A rich, complex sauce often served over chicken, symbolizing the blending of Indigenous and Spanish cultures.
Calaveras de azúcar (Sugar skulls): These decorative skulls, made of sugar, represent the sweetness of life and the acknowledgment of death as a natural part of the human experience.
Sharing these foods not only honors the dead but also brings families together, reinforcing the idea that the Day of the Dead is a celebration of life.
Day of the Dead Beyond Mexico
While the Day of the Dead is most closely associated with Mexico, its influence has spread far beyond its borders. Many communities in the United States, especially in areas with large Mexican populations, celebrate the holiday with altars, parades, and public festivals. Cities like Los Angeles and San Antonio hold large-scale events that bring together people from different cultural backgrounds to celebrate life, death, and memory.
In recent years, the holiday has gained global recognition, in part due to its vibrant imagery and symbolism, as well as popular media representations, such as in the animated film Coco.
Conclusion: A Celebration of Life and Legacy
The Day of the Dead is much more than a holiday--it's a way of life that honors the past while celebrating the present. It is a time for reflection, remembrance, and gratitude for the lives we've shared and the people we've loved. By embracing both life and death, Día de los Muertos reminds us that love transcends time, and that the memories of those we've lost continue to shape us long after they're gone. As this beautiful tradition continues to evolve and gain recognition across the world, it serves as a powerful reminder that death is not something to fear, but rather, something to embrace as part of the universal human experience.

"I am bound to them, though I cannot look into their eyes or hear their voices. I honor their history. I cherish their lives. I will tell their story. I will remember them."
What can we learn from our ancestors?
Both before, and after, the Spanish Invasion, our ancient ancestors migrated throughout the U.S. Southwest - Aztlan - toiled in the land; harvesting the earth's bounty; and living, loving, and working on our homeland. Our ancient ancestors survived genocide, ethnocide, and forced assimilation at the hands of the Spanish colonialists, before eventually overthrowing the Spanish and winning The War Of Independence in 1821.
Our more immediate ancestors also migrated and worked the fertile soil of our homeland, only to see it stolen by the US in 1948 with the US invasion of Mexico during the Mexican American War.
With few resources, little education, little money, and having to learn another new language in a now "foreign land", our ancestors showed tremendous courage in facing insurmountable odds and the resilience to endure revolution, wars, racism, short life spans, disease, infant mortality, hunger, and poverty. Our abuelos may not have been great possessors of material things, but were rich in love for each other, dedicated to unity in the family, and a determination to make a better life for all those who follow.
They showed us we can overcome the trials and tribulations that life throws at us! No matter how strong may be the storm, the family will endure, our heritage will endure, our culture will endure! Our people will endure!
We will not only survive, we will thrive!
We are resilient, with an unbreakable spirit!
Our feet, and hearts, are firmly planted in the soil of our homeland - never to be moved!
None of us, Raza mia, would be reading this right now if it wasn't for the spirit of our ancestors, nuestros abuelos, nuestros padres. None of us would be here if they had folded their hands in defeat.
That same tenacity and fierceness of spirit - ese santo coraje; commitment to unity of family and the unity of our people; and the steadfast hope in a great future for our People is the legacy left to us.
We are now Caretakers of that Legacy, the Legacy of the fulfilling of our destiny to restore the glory of the People of Bronze and reclaim our place in our homeland!
We are the future ancestors of our people.

He made his directorial debut in 2012 with the biographical film Cesar Chávez, which chronicles the life of the renowned labor leader. Luna became a member of the jury for the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival. In January 2015, Luna narrated a video depicting the challenges faced by children migrating from their home countries to seek asylum in the U.S. In October 2019, Luna and García Bernal announced that they would be joining the Creative Advisory Board for a television and film development company. Acting Career: The Foundation of His Wealth Luna acting career began as a child involved in Mexican soap operas, but his international breakthrough was with the acclaimed film Y Tu Mamá También in 2001. The film's success opened the doors to high-profile Hollywood roles. Major Film Roles & Estimated Earnings: - In films like Frida (2002), The Terminal (2004), Milk (2008), and Elysium (2013), Luna received mid-to-high six-figure incomes per role, which is the norm for supporting or co-leading actors in major productions. - In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), Luna earned a mid-six-figure salary ranging from $500,000 to $700,000 for his portrayal of Cassian Andor. His co-star Felicity Jones made seven figures, yet Luna's contribution was crucial to the film's overall success. - In the Disney+ series Andor (2022–Present), where he reprises his role, Luna reportedly earned about $840,000 for the first season. Given the show's positive critical reception and the possibility of future installments, his earnings from this franchise are anticipated to increase significantly. Directing and Producing: Expanding Creative Influence Beyond acting, Luna is an esteemed director and producer who has established two production companies and directed several independent films. Production Companies: - Canana Films (2005–2018): Co-created with Gael García Bernal and Pablo Cruz, this company produced notable Latin American films like Sin Nombre (2009), Miss Bala (2011), and No (2012). These films not only achieved critical acclaim but also reinforced Luna’s standing as a producer with an international vision. - La Corriente del Golfo (2018–Present): This recent collaboration with García Bernal aims to develop socially aware film and television content targeted at Spanish-speaking audiences. Director Credits: Luna has worked on Abel (2010), Cesar Chavez (2014), and Mr. Pig (2016), directing all three films, which showcased at global film festivals and garnered favorable critiques. The fees for directors on these types of projects typically fall within the range of $100,000 to $500,000, influenced by the budget and the extent of distribution. Television and Streaming Projects Luna has tapped into the growth of online platforms, enhancing his engagement with streaming television. Notable Projects: - Andor (Disney+): As previously mentioned, his principal role has led to earnings of around $840,000 every season and increasing visibility as a significant player in the Star Wars universe. - La Máquina (2024, Hulu): Collaborating with Gael García Bernal, he co-created and starred in this boxing series, showcasing Luna’s versatility and business acumen. Industry forecasts indicate that he might earn $250,000 or more for each episode, dependent on how his creative participation is structured. Read the full article

Everything I read in 2024!
Hey folks. Last year I made a resolution to get back into reading and to do it consistently! I'm happy to report that I've been going strong and ended up putting a total of 31 books under my belt (excluding any continuing volumes from any manga series that I've been going through!) 🎉
I had a great time and was quite happy with most of the books I finished! And a HUGE shout out to my local library and their hold/transfer system!
Below, I've put the text version of these images as well as some additional thoughts I have for your reading pleasure. These aren't intended to be thorough reviews, but hopefully you can take something away from this and maybe even add some of these titles to your TBR! Feel free to also leave your thoughts on the books you've also read! Thanks!
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia Finished: January 9 Genre(s): Gothic Horror, Historical 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: 1950s Mexico, a chic socialite is sent to a decaying mansion to rescue her cousin from the English family she married into, only to uncover haunting supernatural secrets. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
What a way to start the year. This book rocked! It was so atmospheric and spooky while also leaning into some themes of colonialism to add to the creepiness. SMG is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and this was a great entry point.
Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez Finished: February 12 Genre(s): Romance, Magical Realism ✅Owned 🔲Borrowed Summary: The enduring, unrequited love of Florentino and Fermina, spanning over fifty years and surviving marriages, affairs, and the ravages of time. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
I've been meaning to read this book since, like, the 8th grade but never could get through it. Maybe that was for the best, since GGM's exploration on love are contradictory and even cruel, which surely would have been confusing for fourteen-year-old me who was still grappling with her first crushes. I read the translated version in this beautifully illustrated edition, though I've been thinking about exploring the original Spanish version at some point so I can fully immerse myself in some of the lost-in-translation humor present throughout the novel.
How Much of These Hills is Gold by C. Pam Zhang Finished: March 7 Genre(s): Western, Drama 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: Two Chinese-American siblings’ journey through the Gold Rush-era West, and their own pasts, following their father’s death. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
This book was punch in the gut, and just when you're recovering and getting back on your feet, it punches you again. The imagery in this really sticks with you, even ten months later, I'm still thinking about buffalo bones in the hills of California and tigers lurking out in gold country.
The Mermaid of Black Conch by Monique Roffey Finished: March 17 Genre(s): Magical Realism 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: A fisherman rescues a cursed mermaid from capture, leading to a transformative love story set in a Caribbean village. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
You might've noticed by now that I enjoy magical realism. I like when stories push the inexplicable and unpredictability found in nature and human histories before it turns into outright fantasy. Plus, there's a mermaid.
The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang Finished: March 31 Genre(s): Fantasy, Grimdark 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: Rin beats the odds and enlists in an elite military academy, where she discovers shamanic powers and is thrust into a brutal war. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
I had a lot of fun with this one, despite some of the more gruesome scenes in the third act. There were times where it felt a little YA, what with the school setting and a bit of the Young Avengers-esque group that she ends up joining in the middle, but that feeling is quickly shaken off as the story proceeds. 🙃
Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya Finished: April 13 Genre(s): Coming-of-age, Historical 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: Coming of age story that feels like a Ghibli movie, set in postwar New Mexico. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕
I didn't expect to like this one as much as I did, but wow. I'm not kidding with my short little summary, the setting here feels so rich and of course, there's some magical realism in this one as well. I think there's already a movie adaptation but I genuinely think this would work as a slow-paced, 2-D animated film. It was cool to get into what from my understanding is classic Chicane literature.
Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia Finished: April 23 Genre(s): Fantasy, Historical 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: Road trip adventure through Mexico with a god of death as he seeks to recover his throne. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
Another SMG banger, this fits in along with Percy Jackson in the genre of "mortals go on a road trip quest at the behest of ancient gods." Highly enjoyable, with some cool and creative imagery, though the ending really made the whole thing for me.
Outlawed by Anna North Finished: April 30 Genre(s): Western, Action/Adventure ✅Owned 🔲Borrowed Summary: A fugitive midwife joins a band of unusual outlaws, fighting for survival in a world that condemns barren women. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑
Entertaining, though I think the author could've done something cooler with the group of queer, PoC outlaws. I was a bit unsatisfied with the ending.
Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas Finished: May 14 Genre(s): Romance, Western, Supernatural 🔲 Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: Cowboys face off vampires as two childhood friends reunite and rekindle their childhood love against the backdrop of the Mexican-American war. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
Going in, I thought this would be heavy on the horror and the action of vaqueros vs vampires. But this is primarily a romance, especially in the first half. A lot of people seem to really like the romance; there's some yearning going on and the male lead is quite sweet. I, on the other hand, had some trouble getting into it, mainly because the main conflict in said romance falls victim to the dreaded miscommunication trope. You're telling me he thought she was dead for nine years but at the same time was exchanging letters with her brother and she was never mentioned, not even in passing? I liked the last half of the book much better. The vampires are quite creative, and there's a particularly gruesome and vivid scene of a vampire feeding by a river that has really stuck with me.
A Ballad of Love and Glory by Reyna Grande Finished: May 27 Genre(s): Romance, Historical 🔲 Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: A curandera and an Irish defect from the Yankee Army come together and must fight for their survival, and then their love, amidst the U.S’ invasion of Mexico. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
Shout out again to my public library, because I randomly picked this up and wasn't expecting to find this hidden gem. I mentioned that I had some trouble with the previous book and the romance in it, because THIS. NOW THIS IS WHAT I CALL YEARNING. This book had me writing down quotes and excerpts, which I almost never do! John Riley, my beloved... Additionally, the Mexican-American War isn't a topic that's really touched on in English-language fiction, but now I've read two books back-to-back that feature it. Honestly, it makes me happy that that piece of history is getting more visibility in the mainstream.
The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang Finished: June 9 Genre(s): Fantasy, Grimdark 🔲 Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: As she runs from the atrocity that she committed, Rin and her friends are dragged into a civil war. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
I'm happy to report that I liked the sequel better than the first book, which is saying a lot since The Poppy War had a lot going for it already. We get some more exploration of characters and their dynamics, and the action gets pretty crazy at times.
Galatea by Madeline Miller Finished: June 10 Genre(s): Myth Retelling, Short Story 🔲 Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: Locked away by her husband and creator, Pygmalion, Galatea ruminates on how to free herself and her daughter. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
This story may be short (it's only about 50 pages printed on small paper) but it's concise in its message. Like, obviously the relationship between a sculptor who doesn't like real-life women and his creation wouldn't go on to be particularly healthy and happy.
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (Deluxe Edition) Vol.1 by Hitoshi Ashinano Finished: June 13 Genre(s): Slice-Of-Life, Sci-Fi 🔲 Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: An android witnesses the slow twilight of humanity from her quaint little coffee shop overlooking the ocean. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
Nothing really happens in this manga, but that's okay. It reminds you to slow down and enjoy the scenery around you, even as the world is slowly falling apart. There's beauty even in destruction.
Alice’s Trading Post by Kerry Dean Feldman Finished: July 3 Genre(s): Historical 🔲 Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: A young woman, half white and half Native, fights to survive in the changing West. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
Another random library find. I don't know how I would have heard about it otherwise since it's not very popular and the publisher is very small. Though I don't think the author is Native himself, the book feels very well researched and you feel quite connected to the Native characters and their experiences.
Woman of Light by Kali Fajardo-Anstine Finished: July 11 Genre(s): Historical, Magical Realism 🔲 Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: A poetic multi-generational story driven by Luz, set in 1930s Denver after her brother is driven out by a white mob. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
I really enjoyed this book while I was reading it, though I don't remember very much of the plot now. I still think it's an interesting premise and that the overall messaging regarding the existence of Indigenous/Latine families in the history of the United States is worth internalizing.
Dead Man’s Hand Edited by John Joseph Adams Finished: July 24 Genre(s): Western, Short Stories, Fantasy, Sci-Fi ✅ Owned 🔲 Borrowed Summary: A collection of short stories about the “Weird” West. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
My first anthology of last year! This is a fun one, as someone who's a fan of Westerns. The variety in its stories is both a strength and weakness for this book; some stories I really liked and have stuck with me, some stories I really didn't like. In the end, the premise of a Weird West anthology is still very cool. If anyone has any other recs in the genre, let me know!
Velvet Was the Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia Finished: August 12 Genre(s): Thriller, Noir, Historical 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: The search for a missing student amidst the political turmoils of 1970s Mexico City from the perspectives of a daydreaming secretary and a thug working from the shadows. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
I read most of this on a flight, and boy, it really pulled me in. As with any good mystery thriller, there's a lot of moving parts and parties of interest that are all handled pretty effectively in my humble opinion. On top of that, the fact that neither of the protagonists are perfect people, much less perfect heroes, allows for nuances in character motives and contributes to how the ending plays out.
The Burning God by R.F. Kuang Finished: August 31 Genre(s): Fantasy, Grimdark 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: The brutal and stunning conclusion to the Poppy War trilogy, Rin must lead the Southern Army to take back her country from those who betrayed her. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕
Wow, what a way to end a trilogy. Personally, I think it's the strongest in the series. It was fun to witness the protagonist grow and develop and eventually spiral down the path of an antihero.
Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan Finished: September 10 Genre(s): Fantasy, Romance 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: Inspired by the Chinese legend of Chang’e, a young immortal girl embarks on a quest in the unfamiliar Celestial Kingdom to free her mother, the Moon Goddess, and return home. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑
First off, the writing and the imagery in this book is so beautiful. The world is detailed and exquisite but at the same time feels like walking through a dream. The romance also felt quite sweet, though it quickly becomes a corny love triangle which I couldn't help but roll my eyes at. Take what you will from that.
The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien Finished: September 30 Genre(s): Fantasy, Adventure ✅Owned 🔲Borrowed Summary: The first part of The Lord of the Rings, Frodo Baggins must leave his home in the Shire and journey to the Cracks of Doom to destroy the One Ring and foil the Dark Lord’s rise to power. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
It is time to become the annoying little Tolkien nerd I was always meant to be. Another classic book that I tried to read in middle school but had failed in the process, even though I'd just finished The Hobbit that year. Aside from this being required reading for fans of fantasy, there are so many funny little things that occur in the book that you don't see talked about very much: Gandalf's little -isms, the whole reason why Legolas was in Rivendell in the first place, and Tom Bombadil was...there.
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller Finished: October 09 Genre(s): Myth Retelling, Fantasy, Romance 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: After growing up and training together, Patroclus follows his beloved Achilles to war. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
Reading Madeline Miller feels like I'm drinking wine and eating off the finest charcuterie board. One thing I like about Miller's Greek retellings is that she takes these figures from myth and makes them feel human. They go through highs and lows, with small yet intimate moments scattered between them. It's those intimate moments where I really appreciate her skills as a writer.
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao Finished: October 19 Genre(s): YA Sci-Fi 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: In a distant future where giant mechas are powered by sacrificing female “concubine-pilots”, Zetian becomes the Iron Widow. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
This one was fun. I do love reading a righteously angry protagonist as she steadily builds up her power. This book felt very anime in both its premise and execution, which makes sense considering mecha anime was a very clear influence on the story.
Babel by R.F. Kuang Finished: October 30 Genre(s): Fantasy, Historical, Dark Academia 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: In an alternate history, Oxford translators become student revolutionaries against the exploitations of the British Empire. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
For little nerds who are into magic systems that are based on words and language, this was great. Very atmospheric in the first half, this book really takes the time to immerse you in just total Oxford. The latter half then proceeds to break the spell, literally dropping my jaw at certain points. Not my favorite Kuang book of the year, but still compelling nonetheless.
They Dance in the Sky by Jean Guard Monroe & Ray A. Williamson Finished: November 02 Genre(s): Folklore, Anthology 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: A collection of legends about the stars from various American Indigenous cultures. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑
A short collection of stories that I also found at the library, this was just cool to pick up every once in a while and learn about folktales that were new to me.
Never Whistle At Night Edited by Shane Hawk & Theodore C. Van Alst Jr. Finished: November 10 Genre(s): Horror, Short Stories ✅Owned 🔲Borrowed Summary: A horror story anthology featuring Indigenous authors, drawing from Native beliefs, folklore, and lived experiences. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
This is a highly polished anthology that is consistent in the quality of its stories. The imagery in here is powerful, as are the themes. The horror aspect feels unique to contemporary Native cultures, which can be found in the nuances in the featured horror tropes such as possession, doppelgangers, ghosts and spirits, body horror, and the stranded trope, just to name a few.
The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia Finished: November 17 Genre(s): Historical, Sci-Fi ✅Owned 🔲Borrowed Summary: Late-1800s Yucatán, Carlota’s sheltered, idyllic life shared with her father’s hybrid experiments is upended by external forces. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
It's not often that I read historical sci-fi, but I found myself really liking the setting. I think the choice of changing the Island of Dr. Moreau from a literal island in SE Asia to an isolated hacienda in the Yucatán peninsula was fun. The plot is straightforward, which is okay, sometimes you need a simple plot amid all the messiness of the world. If I were to describe the romance in this book, I believe I once mentioned to a friend that the main pairing were very "Milly/Wolfwood-coded."
The Volcano Daughters by Gina María Balibrera Finished: November 24 Genre(s): Historical, Magical Realism 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: Narrated by the spirits of their childhood friends, two sisters’ lives are forever changed by the dictatorial regime in El Salvador. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
More magical realism for me! The beginning really sucked me in, I thought I was in for something special. I often enjoy disembodied, ghostly narrators, and most of the story revolved around a piece of Salvadorian history that I was not that aware of. However, there were too many times where I thought the main leads were too passive in their actions. It prevented me from caring about them and their development, which is really the only thing holding me back from giving this 5 stars.
The Princess and the Scoundrel by Beth Revis Finished: December 2 Genre(s): Romance, Sci-Fi, Fantasy 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: Leia and Han spend their honeymoon aboard a luxury cruiseliner, but discover Imperial remnants still clinging to power. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
Baby's first Star Wars novel! This feels like a very fitting story to tell directly after Return of the Jedi, though it was very funny to read about the now defunct Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser that was featured in this novel now that I know what happened to it (shout out to Jenny Nicholson and her video on the failure of Star Wars Hotel.) Han and Leia are cute tho.
The Sun and the Void by Gabriela Romero Lacruz Finished: December 12 Genre(s): Fantasy 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: The paths of two women, marginalized by society yet desperate with ambition, converge in a quest to invoke a dark god. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
Featuring a sapphic romance that I actually enjoyed! Now, not to be that person that compares every sapphic romance to Revolutionary Girl Utena, but just like in Utena, every character has baggage and there's drama and I love the messiness. A book with some good ol' fantasy questing, even if I wasn't a huge fan of the magic system (idk, I guess I just didn't find it very interesting.)
Anita De Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez Finished: December 21 Genre(s): Historical, Literary Fiction 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: A first generation Ivy League student unearths the works of a forgotten Cuban artist who was murdered just thirteen years earlier by her husband. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
This book felt like I was back in my Intersectional Feminist Art Histories class, but in a good way. I saw some people irked by the fact that despite the premise of this book being loosely based on the life, death, and legacy of Ana Mendieta, there wasn't enough acknowledgment of Mendieta herself, nor did it seem like her family was directly involved in the making of it. Whether or not that prevents you from picking up the book is up to you. Personally, it did not detract from a well crafted story and exploration on art and who decides what counts as art worth remembering.
Night of the Living Rez by Morgan Talty Finished: December 30 Genre(s): Short Stories, Contemporary 🔲Owned ✅Borrowed Summary: Set in an Indigenous community in Maine, a collection of vignettes centers a young protagonist and his family’s unravelment. Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
This was solid, and totally not what I was expecting going in. It's a collection of connected stories that are not told chronologically, but I think that's what contributes to making the bigger story feel grounded and real. There are no set endings in life, certain events just lead into others and you have no choice but to keep going. People that you once thought were going to be in your life forever are suddenly nowhere to be found, but you can't spend every waking moment pondering that. Some of the stories resonated with me more than others, but that's just life, ain't it?
If you made it this far, thanks again! Take care of yourself in 2025.

Why Chipotle Mexican Grill Real Estate is a Favorite Among Net Lease Buyers
In the realm of net lease investments, Chipotle Mexican Grill real estate stands out as a beacon of opportunity. Investors have increasingly turned their attention to this fast-casual dining chain, recognizing the potential for stable income and long-term growth. The allure of Chipotle's real estate lies not only in its strong brand identity but also in the strategic positioning of its locations, its robust financial performance, and the overall consumer trends favoring healthier dining options. In this article, we will delve into the reasons why Chipotle Mexican Grill real estate has become a favorite among net lease buyers, exploring various facets that contribute to its desirability in the commercial real estate market.
The Strength of the Chipotle Brand
At the core of Chipotle's appeal is its strong brand identity. Established in 1993, Chipotle Mexican Grill has built a reputation for serving high-quality, fresh, and responsibly sourced ingredients. The brand's commitment to sustainability and ethical sourcing resonates with a growing demographic of health-conscious consumers. This brand loyalty translates into consistent foot traffic and customer retention, essential factors for net lease investors seeking reliable income streams.
Moreover, Chipotle's marketing strategy effectively communicates its values, positioning the brand as a leader in the fast-casual dining sector. The company's emphasis on transparency, with its "Food With Integrity" campaign, has established trust among consumers. This trust not only drives sales but also enhances the value of Chipotle's real estate holdings. As more individuals seek out dining options that align with their personal values, the demand for Chipotle locations remains robust, further solidifying its status as a prime investment opportunity.
Strategic Location Choices
The significance of location cannot be overstated in the world of real estate, and Chipotle excels in this regard. The chain carefully selects its sites based on demographic research and market analysis, ensuring that each restaurant is positioned to capitalize on local consumer spending patterns. Chipotle's locations are typically found in urban centers, near college campuses, and in high-traffic retail areas, making them accessible to a diverse customer base.
This strategic placement not only enhances customer accessibility but also contributes to higher sales volumes. For net lease buyers, this translates into a dependable income stream, as Chipotle restaurants are likely to perform well in their chosen locales. The combination of prime locations and a strong customer base positions Chipotle Mexican Grill real estate as a secure asset, appealing to investors who prioritize stability and growth potential.
Financial Performance and Stability
Investors are naturally drawn to properties that demonstrate strong financial performance, and Chipotle does not disappoint. With consistent revenue growth, the company has managed to maintain a healthy balance sheet, reflecting its operational efficiency and effective management strategies. In recent years, Chipotle has seen significant increases in same-store sales, driven by menu innovations and successful marketing campaigns.
This financial stability is crucial for net lease buyers. The long-term leases associated with Chipotle properties, often spanning 10 to 20 years, provide investors with peace of mind. Knowing that a well-established brand with a proven track record is behind the lease can significantly reduce the risks commonly associated with commercial real estate investments. Additionally, the potential for rent increases built into these leases further enhances the attractiveness of Chipotle Mexican Grill real estate, making it a compelling choice for those seeking to diversify their investment portfolios.
Consumer Trends Favoring Fast-Casual Dining
The fast-casual dining segment has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, driven by evolving consumer preferences. As more individuals seek healthier meal options that are both convenient and affordable, restaurants like Chipotle are perfectly positioned to meet this demand. The shift toward fast-casual dining reflects a broader trend toward quality dining experiences that prioritize fresh ingredients and customizable menu options.
Chipotle’s focus on providing made-to-order meals aligns perfectly with these consumer trends. The brand's ability to adapt and innovate, such as introducing new menu items and enhancing the digital ordering experience, further solidifies its place in the competitive landscape. For net lease buyers, investing in Chipotle real estate means tapping into a sector that is not only growing but also increasingly favored by consumers who prioritize health and convenience.
Resilience in a Changing Market
The commercial real estate market is not without its challenges, particularly in the wake of economic fluctuations and unexpected global events. However, Chipotle's business model has demonstrated remarkable resilience. The company's ability to pivot during crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, showcases its adaptability. With a swift shift to digital ordering and delivery services, Chipotle maintained its relevance and continued to drive sales even during challenging times.
This adaptability is a significant factor for net lease investors. Properties associated with brands that can weather economic storms are inherently more valuable. Chipotle's proactive approach to market changes, coupled with its strong brand equity, positions its real estate as a safer investment during uncertain times. This resilience not only attracts investors but also contributes to the long-term sustainability of Chipotle Mexican Grill real estate as a preferred asset class in net lease portfolios.
Conclusion
In summary, Chipotle Mexican Grill real estate has emerged as a favorite among net lease buyers for several compelling reasons. From the strength of the Chipotle brand and its strategic location choices to its impressive financial performance and alignment with consumer trends, the investment potential is undeniable. As the fast-casual dining segment continues to thrive, Chipotle's resilient business model and commitment to quality ensure that its real estate will remain a sought-after asset.

March 11, 2025
Mar 12
(THE NARCISSISTIC SOCIOPATHY ON FULL DISPLAY!)
(NOTE: EMO MUSKRAT IS A CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER! LET'S GET HIM ON A STARLINK ROCKET PRONTO!)
(NOTE: ILLEGAL TO DO THIS ON GOVT GROUNDS - THEY'RE NOT EVEN HIDING THE CORRUPTION ANYMORE)
(NOTE: FUCKING DELUSIONAL MORONS!!!)

The Extraordinary Sea of Cortez
Jacques Cousteau famously called the Sea of Cortez the "world's aquarium" for its remarkable biodiversity. This 700-mile-long gulf separating mainland Mexico from the Baja Peninsula hosts an astonishing variety of marine life, including blue whales—Earth's largest animals.
From January through March, blue whale enthusiasts gather in Loreto Bay National Marine Park to witness these colossal creatures, which can reach lengths of up to 100 feet. Unlike more acrobatic species, blue whales reveal their massive presence through tall, columnar blows visible from great distances.
Beyond Whale Watching
Mexico Whale watching marine ecosystem offers wildlife experiences extending beyond whale observation. Many tour operators provide comprehensive ocean safaris that might include encounters with:
Massive whale sharks feeding near La Paz and Isla Holbox
Playful dolphin pods that frequently accompany boats
Elephant seals and sea lions lounging on rocky outcrops
Manta rays gracefully gliding through clear waters
Sea turtles navigating coastal currents
Community-Based Conservation
Many coastal communities in Mexico have transitioned from traditional fishing to sustainable ecotourism, creating positive economic incentives for marine conservation. Former fishermen now serve as knowledgeable guides, sharing generations of local wisdom about the ocean and its inhabitants.
Mexican authorities have established comprehensive regulations to protect marine mammals, including restrictions on boat numbers, approach distances, and interaction times. These measures ensure that tourism supports rather than threatens whale populations.
Planning Your Mexican Whale Safari
The optimal season for whale watching in Mexico spans December through April, with January and February typically offering peak activity. Visitors can choose experiences ranging from half-day excursions from major tourist destinations to immersive multi-day expeditions at specialized camps in remote locations.
