do you have any fun headcanons about the 'everyone knows about nation people' universe? the fake social media posts of it are so funny
hmmm, i haven't thought about this in too much detail (although i love the fake social media posts too!), but when i think about this, i tend to think more about individual nations' opinions on humans and the dynamic they have with people rather than humans-->nations, if that makes sense?
i do have a few headcanons that i think are fun re: nation-human relations in modern day:
norway goes through human assistants extremely quickly (high job turnover rate) because he can be difficult to deal with/eccentricities of being old and demi-immortal, but in some ways that works out well for him because while a lot of humans can't work well with him, he will occasionally get an assistant that mutually clicks with him, and that person will be his assistant basically until the end of their life. he generally has some strong disdainful feelings for humanity as a whole and the problems they cause, but is also very fond of certain individual humans and will form close relationships with some humans if he feels those humans are worth it (again, 99% of the people will not click with him, but the 1% that do are golden). the humans that do tend to be in that 1% just kind of know how to deal with his eccentricities and tend to be a bit oddball themselves (norway makes them worse).
norway's sense of using social media is kind of sporadic. he's the kind of person i think that will not post anything for three months, then post a picture of a beautiful fjord he took with no caption, a week later makes a text post that just says "mold" or something similarly cryptic like a really zoomed in/blurred photo where you can't tell what is happening, and that's all you get from him for another three months. so i think he does some numbers on social media in niche human circles but i don't think he entirely understands all of the time that he's amusing to people (or that people consider his posts to be shitposts). there is probably a small community dedicated to trying to decipher what he's posting that comes up with all of these theories, but sometimes the answer to 'why hasn't he posted in six months and what can his last ten tweets tell us about what's happening' is that he either dropped a phone into a ravine while hiking or he forgot social media existed (old man at heart).
denmark is the opposite to me, in which he's more surface-level friendly and cordial with all humans, but he holds them all at a distance more emotionally (even when he seems emotionally engaged with them) and seldom develops close relationships with humans in modern day. it's kind of a professionalism thing in the way he views it for himself, but deep down it's because he wants to avoid getting hurt by them (in many ways), and he generally prefers his own company if his only other option is to interact with humans. (this is also my attempt at kind of bridging the hetalia character of denmark being depicted as rather joyous/emotional/social and marrying it with the more of the actual nordic/danish stereotype being more a bit more introverted/closed off to strangers/etc).
iceland is a weird one for me because i think he feels more connected/comfortable with other icelanders (and humans in general) than he does other nations most of the time, but there is still a disconnect between him and people. I think this is because I view his relationship with the nations he has the most personal history with/closest to (i.e. other nordics) as being very historically complicated even if he is loved/mostly has positive interactions with his family in modern day. i've always interpreted iceland's character as having a very disorganized attachment style in that he can oscillate between exhibiting all types of attachment style with the same person even during a short span of time (a lot of this is norway's '''''fault''''' because i also see norway having somewhat disorganized (but much more avoidant/dismissive while ice is way more anxious) attachment too, but for different reasons and it is less internally distressing for him than it is iceland because he's older/has figured some stuff out by the time iceland is a teen. but since norway was the person most responsible for looking after young iceland when norway was basically a Teen Dad himself, his own lack of self-development/healing from his own attachment issues and other external forces impacted how he raised iceland. oops.)
That being said, lot of iceland's disorganization is exhibited internally rather than externally (so even if he's anxious about being abandoned, since he's also avoidant/dismissive and is like 'i can take care of myself', he both wants and doesn't want reassurance at the same time which is confusing for him but those parts of him just battle deep inside of him). Because of this, humans are often easier for him to interact with because he knows they will all 'leave' him (i.e. die), so he oddly feels more comfortable knowing how that relationship will end -- this allows him to feel both attached and unattached at the same time, which suits how he operates a lot of the time. with icelanders especially, he's kind of well-connected and liked (in part because he's generally much more down to earth and fairly considerate in comparison to a lot of other nations) even though he doesn't feel like he is.
i think poland should be a popular livestreamer on twitch. i have seen others posts about this before and i think they are 100% right.

Hey, how was your day? Tired from work? Annoying boss? Come to reso- music! We'll heal you with music.
We gonna share some classic folk songs with you today. Folk music has always had a unique way of connecting with people, and they often feature slow, simple, repetitive melodies that allow the lyrics to take center stage and convey a message.
🎵
Can't get enough of 《Five Hundred Miles》.
Melodic, natural and fresh. Life is hard, and you're not 500 miles from home. If you listen to it when you are lost and confused, your mood will be calmed down...
If you miss that train I'm on, it's the one I've left alone and in dismay; listen to the whistle that stretches for a hundred miles, a hundred miles, and a hundred miles ......
🎵
《Take Me Home, Country Roads 》 is a 1971 song written by American folk singer John Denver with Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert.
The inspiration for the song came from Bill Danoff, a musician friend of John Denver's, and his wife, Taffy Nivert, who told him that he was accompanying Nivert on a trip to join her family in Maryland; on the way there, he remembered a tune that would be suitable for a folk ballad.
After hearing the demo tune, John Denver was intrigued enough to talk to Danoff and Nivert about revising it for his next album, Poems, Prayers and Promises.
Every time we hear this song, it always evokes strong feelings of homesickness. country roads, take me home, to the place I belong... No matter how unsatisfactory life is, as long as the home is still there, our souls and bodies will have a place to return to.
🎵
...How to appease the lonely soul on a long night? In the face of the darkness of silence, natural contemplation is the greatest solace, the stars in the hazy moonlight, full of dewdrops of flowers, have given us the freedom of tolerance, soaring thoughts, so that loneliness has become a kind of enjoyment in the journey of life.
Accompanied by the melody of the bass, loneliness becomes a rare luxury. In loneliness you hear the sound of gurgling spring water? In loneliness do you see the round dance song gliding through the grass on a summer night? “Hello, darkness, my old friend, I've come to talk to you again.” ...... Let's use the key of 《The Sounds of Silence》 to open the door of loneliness in our hearts, and in loneliness, experience the depth and breadth of life, and welcome the bright dawn of your own.
As the theme song to the Academy Award-winning film 《The Graduate》 and one of the most iconic pieces of music of all time, this song has touched the hearts of millions of people around the world, spanning more than half a century, and has been sung for a long time.
🎵
Every time I hear this song 《Valder Fields》 by Toams Wells,
It's like sitting alone in the soft grass.
The warm afternoon sunlight is spreading gently on you.
White clouds roaming in the blue sky
The breeze smells of earth
and caresses your face.
In front of you are mountains and lakes.
Cows and goats are grazing.
It's peaceful and quiet.
The upbeat yet serene rhythms and gentle yet moving lyrics quiet every restless soul.
🎵
This is a Scandinavian ballad about a two-way crush called 《Say Hello》, sung by Roise Thomas and Sufjan Stevens.
The whole song is sweet and youthful, perfectly illustrating the nervousness, hesitation and anticipation of a crush.
If you meet someone you like, look them in the eye and say hello.
🎵
《Happy (I Used To Be)》,sung by the Norwegian singer-songwriter Egil Olsen, unique Nordic temperament, warm and continuous voice, slowly flowing with the sadness of the lazy mood, with minimalist and moving songs known as one of Norway's best live performers!
This song is a slow way to grieve, perfect for a quiet night or drunk moments to enjoy.

Listen to reso-music! Listen to how folk songs make the world feel right. Joy, sadness, frustration, secret love, homesickness, friendship, etc., there is always a feeling that can RESOnate with you.

NASA Selects Four Commercial Companies to Support Near Space Network - NASA
Tumblr media
NASA has selected multiple companies to expand the agency’s Near Space Network’s commercial direct-to-Earth capabilities services, which is a mission-critical communication capability that allows spacecraft to transmit data directly to ground stations on Earth.
The work will be awarded under new Near Space Network services contracts that are firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contracts. Project timelines span from February 2025 to September 2029, with an additional five-year option period that could extend a contract through Sept. 30, 2034. The cumulative maximum value of all Near Space Network Services contracts is $4.82 billion.
Some companies received multiple task orders for subcategories identified in their contracts. Awards are as follows:
Intuitive Machines of Houston will receive two task order awards on its contract for Subcategory 1.2 GEO to Cislunar Direct to Earth (DTE) Services and Subcategory 1.3 xCislunar DTE Services to support NASA’s Lunar Exploration Ground Segment, providing additional capacity to alleviate demand on the Deep Space Network and to meet the mission requirements for unique, highly elliptical orbits. The company also previously received a task order award for Subcategory 2.2 GEO to Cislunar Relay Services.
Kongsberg Satellite Services of Tromsø, Norway, will receive two task order awards on its contract for Subcategory 1.1 Earth Proximity DTE and Subcategory 1.2 to support science missions in low Earth orbit and NASA’s Lunar Exploration Ground Segment, providing additional capacity to alleviate demand on the Deep Space Network.
SSC Space U.S. Inc. of Horsham, Pennsylvania, will receive two task order awards on its contract for Subcategories 1.1 and 1.3 to support science missions in low Earth orbit and to meet the mission requirements for unique, highly elliptical orbits.
Viasat, Inc. of Duluth, Georgia, will be awarded a task order on its contract for Subcategory 1.1 to support science missions in low Earth orbit.
The Near Space Network’s direct-to-Earth capability supports many of NASA’s missions ranging from climate studies on Earth to research on celestial objects. It also will play a role in NASA’s Artemis campaign, which calls for long-term exploration of the Moon.
NASA’s goal is to provide users with communication and navigation services that are secure, reliable, and affordable, so that all NASA users receive the services required by their mission within their latency, accuracy, and availability requirements.
These awards demonstrate NASA’s ongoing commitment to fostering strong partnerships with the commercial space sector, which plays an essential role in delivering the communications infrastructure critical to the agency’s science and exploration missions.
As part of the agency’s SCaN (Space Communications and Navigation) Program, teams at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, will carry out the work of the Near Space Network. The Near Space Network provides missions out to 1.2 million miles (2 million kilometers) with communications and navigation services, enabling spacecraft to exchange critical data with mission operators on Earth. Using space relays in geosynchronous orbit and a global system of government and commercial direct-to-Earth antennas on Earth, the network brings down terabytes of data each day.

Having long been tipped as the next Nobel laureate, the Norwegian writer has this year been awarded the prize. For those new to the acclaimed playwright and novelist, here are some good ways in.
The novelist, playwright, essayist and poet Jon Fosse, 64, is this year’s winner of the Nobel prize in Literature. He is now set to become the world’s best-known Norwegian writer of contemporary fiction, perhaps even overtaking his former student, Karl Ove Knausgård. In his career as a playwright, Fosse has been hailed as “the new Ibsen” – borne out by the fact that his plays are the most widely performed in Norway after Ibsen’s own. Despite years of international acclaim, however, it is only relatively recently that Fosse’s books have begun to reach the mainstream of English translation publishing – so here’s where to begin.
The entry point
Fosse’s powerful (and frequently very short) stories in the collection Scenes from a Childhood span Fosse’s literary career from 1983 to 2013. They serve as an introduction to the central themes of his work – childhood, memory, family, faith – coupled with a strong sense of duality and of fatalism. Fragmentary, elliptical, at times deliberately simplistic, they mark life’s journey from extreme youth to old age. Standouts include Red Kiss Mark of a Letter, And Then My Dog Will Come Back to Me.
If you only read one
In Fosse’s 2023 novella Aliss at the Fire, an old woman, Signe, lies by the fire at her house next to a fjord, dreaming of herself 20 years earlier and her husband, Asle, who rowed out one day on the water in a storm and never came back. It is typical of Fosse – bleak, with a grand use of a repeated central image, that of blackness, and structured around the grip of ancestral history (the Aliss of the title is Asle’s great-great-great-grandmother), doubles and repeated actions: Asle’s grandfather had the same name as him and met the same fate by drowning. Hypnotic and mysterious.
If you’re in a rush
Published in 1989, The Boathouse is the closest thing Fosse has written to a crime novel. The 30-year-old narrator seems to have failed at everything in life – he lives with his mother, is a virtual recluse, doesn’t seem able to do basic things for himself. His most important achievement lies in his past – the rock band he had with his childhood friend Knut, with whom he has lost contact. Yet one summer a chance encounter with Knut, now married and relatively successful, will lead to a devastating denouement. Parallel to this, the narrator is also writing a novel that is an acute observation of every instance of his “restless” existence: a perfect example of the “write, don’t think” maxim as Fosse instructed his students in the late 80s in Bergen, when this book was in the making.
The play
“I can’t help wondering if the cultural gulf between Fosse’s world and our own is too wide,” wrote the Guardian critic when his 1999 play Dream of Autumn had its English language premiere in Dublin in 2006. Much has changed in Europe and the rest of the world in the intervening 17 years, however. The drama’s premise is simple, the undercurrents are not: a man and a woman meet in a graveyard and begin an affair – perhaps they knew one another in a past life. As they leave the graveyard the man’s parents arrive for a funeral and, as is common with Fosse, time leaps forward by years, in a lingering, longing dance of intergenerational circularity.
The one worth persevering with
In Melancholy I and II, Fosse takes us deep into the tortured mind of the 19th-century landscape artist Lars Hertervig, who died impoverished in 1902 in his early 70s, and whose life was blighted by the hallucinations and delusions that made his paintings appear so dreamlike, so sublime. Hertervig first became psychotic as a student at art school in Düsseldorf and, as well as an often terrifying examination of mental illness, the novels (originally published separately but now as one volume) are most significantly about what it means to be an artist. Melancholy I details the young Hertervig’s obsessions, anxieties, and eventual breakdown during one terrible day; Melancholy II acts as a coda, with different narrative perspectives – including that of a would-be fictional biographer – many years after Hertervig’s death.
The masterpiece
The seven books of Fosse’s Septology I-VII (helpfully compressed into three volumes comprising The Other Name, I Is Another and A New Name) centre on Asle, an ageing artist living in remote south-west Norway. A Catholic convert, like Fosse himself, Asle is grappling with time, art and identity. It is an extraordinary work of existential crisis, of memory loss, and persistent doppelgangers, either real or imaginary – the life lived, and the life that might have been lived, in the person of the shadowy other. It’s a frightening and intense read, which is rendered without a sentence break, so that the reader is essentially living Asle’s life with him. Septology is also a work of deep religious faith in which a man, an artist, and a human being, above all, in the end comes full circle: “It’s definitely true that it’s just when things are darkest, blackest, that you see the light.”

mecha ocs u say 👀 pls tell me more:]
HA are you ready for MORE world building(and science i dont know anything about but pretend to) ?! *evil laugh* strap in buddy >:)
ok SO this stuff takes place in the post-apocalyptic future. On Earth that is mostly populated by monsters that rule over the land. The air is also filled with dangerous gasses emitting from the monsters. They are dangerous for any animal to breath. Most of the gas and the monsters are concentrated in the Mediterranean sea, parts of Africa and southern Asia. Staying in warmer and dryer parts of the Earth.
Humans in this universe reside in a belt called the East Cross that spans all the way from Norway to northern parts of China. In the northern parts like in Russia humans can live quite normally due to the cold keeping the monsters away. There are also humans in southern Africa, the Americas and parts of Oceania.(but i havent gotten into them that much)
Due to the danger of the new environment humanity has advanced their technology far beyond what they would have thought which is where the mechas come in. After decades of research and studies humans have created tech that is capable of brain emulation. At first only partial brain emulation or PBE was achievable. In which a computer will create a 3D scan of the host brain and it constructs a software copy of it. The copy can be implanted into a mechanical body and through an emulator the human host can control the mechanical body from a distance.
A branch of military was created from this technology called the Android Emulation Corps(lazy name but it is what it is) or for short the A. E. C. They operate unmanned androids, called Self's through the brain emulation.
In the future, whole brain emulation or WBE was created. It is much more extreme version of the partial one. The human host's brain will be removed from the body and is sliced into small cubes which are then scanned with great accuracy. The immerse detailed scan of the brain, when ran on appropriate software is identical to the original host brain. The main difference in WBE and PBE is that WBE is able to simulate the host brains consciousness, whereas the PBE only allows the host brain to move into the copy and control it.
The WBE is a very delicate procedure and not always 100% successful. It is also not reversible and the original brain is impossible to be implanted into the biological body. But if successful, after booting the mechanical copy body the brain was implanted in, the host's personality and consciousness will live on without a biological body. Also this way if the mechanical body is destroyed the copy brain can just be implanted into a new body, basically making the host immortal.
ok not the the Self's. They are most of the time 300-390 meters in height and can weigh up to 10 000 kilograms. They are mostly made of flexible but strong materials like steel, fiber-reinforced plastic and thermoplastic. They have human proportions to make it easy for the host to pilot them. The most common PBE Self type is the Olympian. They are equipped with machine guns and a type of ultrasonic weapon that has deemed very effective against the monsters. The implanted copy brain sits in the lower spine. It is the one's used in the frontier against the monsters. The WBE Self's are commonly smaller and made for life outside of combat.
and ummm... yeah i just vomited this all here so how a bout a small snippet from my writing about the characters (im force feeding you here and you cant stop it)
He sits next to Bill and brings up his ticket to examine it. It reads. East Cross underground bullet train. From Copenhagen to Beijing C. 07:30 - 08:20. Cabin number 2. Seat number 87. “These trains really are fast.” Meyer says more to himself than to Bill next to him. In 50 minutes through the whole Eurasian continent. Impressive. “Have you ever been in one?” Now talking to Bill who fiddles his own ticket in his big fingers. “One time. When they were building the first of them. As a child.”  “Cool. I’ve actually never even been near one. Should be exciting.” Bill hums in acknowledgement and the conversation ends. Until Nemo walks into the hall. He slides opposite of Meyer and Bill and opens his mouth; “Where you sitting?” Nemo lifts his own ticket for them to look. Seat 91.  “I’m 87.” Meyer answers and Bill says that he sits in seat 75. “Hope we can still move in the train.” Nemo makes a face and pockets his ticket.

Who will win FIFA 2026? Favorites, latest odds and betting for finals in North America
With the UEFA Nations League completed and settled, all focus now shifts towards the FIFA 2026, with qualification campaigns in progress and the event now merely a year away. It pledges to be a World Cup unlike any before, as it will be the initial instance that 48 nations will take part and matches will occur across three separate countries — the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Tumblr media
Argentina are the reigning titleholders, having overcome France on penalties in arguably the most remarkable final ever, and both sides are once again among the present favorites to win next year. But who will claim the 2026 World Cup? The Sporting News presents you with all the current betting odds via Parimatch.
Winner betting odds for FIFA 2026
Here’s the most recent odds for the nations tipped to secure the FIFA World Cup 2026, with values for all those listed at 101.0 or lower. Odds are accurate at the time of release but are liable to modification. Stay updated with the revised values as the market changes.
Tumblr media
As the anticipation grows for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, the latest odds provide a glimpse into how sportsbooks assess the top competitors. Spain currently tops the field with odds of 6.50, closely tailed by France at 7.50 and Brazil at 7.0. England continues as a strong contender as well, positioned at 8.0, while title holders Argentina follow at 9.0.
Germany and Portugal are likewise among the contenders with odds of 11.0 and 13.0, respectively. The Netherlands and Italy come next at 21.0 and 26.0, with Uruguay, Belgium, and Colombia ranging between 34.0 and 51.0. The USA and Norway both carry 51.0 odds, signifying moderate outlooks, while Mexico, Denmark, and Croatia each stand at 67.0.
Meanwhile, Japan and Morocco are considered underdogs at 101.0, and Canada places further down the rankings with odds of 151.0. These numbers not only emphasize the intense rivalry among footballing nations but also provide a perspective into how each squad is presently evaluated on the international level.
Favorites and top candidates for the FIFA World Cup 2026 gaming
France. Holding arguably the most ability of any nation in global football at present and having reached the previous two finals, Les Bleus are predictably ranked high on this list. Kylian Mbappe and Ballon d’Or frontrunner Ousmane Dembele headline a star-studded lineup that also includes the most exciting new prospects in French football: Desire Doue, Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola and Rayan Cherki.
Accommodating all of them will be nearly unmanageable, but Didier Deschamps must release the brakes on his squad this time, unlike during Euro 2024. It might be the factor between capturing a third World Cup or enduring yet another narrow disappointment.
Spain. La Roja’s ranking as favorites is entirely justified, considering they captured Euro 2024 and were only defeated via penalties in the Nations League final. They also overcame France in both tournaments, demonstrating they have the measure of a team they could very likely encounter in North America next summer.
Lamine Yamal is the clear standout, but Luis de la Fuente can also count on Euro final scorers Nico Williams and the vastly underrated Mikel Oyarzabal for goals. Spain also possesses unquestionably the most dominant midfield in global football at the moment, with Pedri, Fabian Ruiz and Martin Zubimendi starting the Nations League final while current Ballon d’Or holder Rodri steadily returns from a major knee injury.
Brazil and England Confront Legacy and Pressure Ahead of Football World Cup 2026
Brazil. The Seleção has lifted the World Cup a record five times, yet it will mark a 24-year gap when they take the field next summer. They haven’t reached a final in that span either, having been eliminated by European opponents in each of the past five competitions.
Tumblr media
Their loss at the quarter-final phase last time around could very likely have marked Neymar’s final World Cup outing for the Selecao. But they still possess an exceptional range of skill spearheaded by Vinicius Jr, Raphinha and Matheus Cunha. Can Carlo Ancelotti achieve what he has managed with Real Madrid and make all the components function in unison?
It will be 60 years of disappointment by the moment the Three Lions head across the Atlantic. Gareth Southgate came closest to breaking the notorious drought with two Euros final defeats, but now the responsibility of rescuer has been transferred to Thomas Tuchel.
Germany and Argentina Direct Improbability Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026
The German possesses an impressive competition résumé at club level, but this marks his first international post, and he has had a rather underwhelming beginning. Nonetheless, there is still ample time to rectify things, and England boasts a new Golden Generation to develop.
Argentina. It might be somewhat unexpected to witness the World Cup and Copa America title-holders positioned so low at the moment, but this is an ageing squad that may have seen its prime by next summer. Lionel Messi will continue to lead the charge at the age of 39. But he will need the support of Julian Alvarez, Alexis Mac Allister Enzo and Fernandez to increase more.
If Argentina is to own a genuine chance to protect its title. They have done consequently in succeeding, with La Albiceleste 10 points ahead at the summit of the South American requirement group, and with their ticket taken for North America. Might they pull it off once more?
Germany. They have endured a decade to forget since lifting their fourth World Cup in 2014. With first-round exits in both of the past two editions, and without even a final appearance in any of the three European Championships during that era, either.
Germany Rebounds and Portugal Eyes Historic Glory in FIFA 2026 Campaign
However, circumstances have improved under the leadership of Julian Nagelsmann. With narrow eliminations at Euro 2024 and the 2025 Nations League to eventual winners, Spain and Portugal. With some promising young prospects, namely Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala, and their status as a historic footballing powerhouse, you simply can’t dismiss them.

The need for green schoolyards in cities
Research on outdoor learning, especially that which takes place in green spaces, has consistently shown that kids tend to focus better, get higher grades, and find new confidence when they are in these settings. But most of today’s city schoolyards are not conducive to outdoor learning. If you visit a public elementary school in East Los Angeles, for example, you often find a barren concrete “yard” in its center. Here, there are no old trees to climb and tell stories under, no bushes to hide in during hide-and-seek, no flower beds to watch the butterflies and bees. Instead, the children who attend these public schools are often crammed into overcrowded classrooms and are forced to focus on mental tasks for hours.

This is one end of the extreme. But even in more thought-out schoolyards in progressive cities in Europe, for example, one can look around and find a trend towards increasingly industrialized spaces. These environments are usually centered around a play structure, which has been cheaply produced. It usually consists of metal, rubber, and petroleum-based plastic components, which aren’t particularly good for the environment. Chemicals from plastics leach into the ground and concrete/metal elements amplify the increasingly hot summer temperatures. Although there is growing emphasis on the importance of green spaces in schools, more often than not they manifest as disconnected elements-- one tree here, another circle of grass there, etc. These are not rich, diverse spaces.

Why is this happening? Some may argue that there’s a strong-profit motive here: laying down concrete and installing a mass-produced play structure is cheaper and easier than planting/ tending to a garden or a grove of trees. Some might actually promote these places because of their alignment with modern aesthetics. Others will point to the fact that as cities densify and more children enter schools, the schools often need to expand and do so at the expense of the size of the schoolyard. These are only a small sampling of reasons.
But we cannot afford to sacrifice these precious spaces. Rather, we should be expanding and redesigning our schoolyards in ways that facilitate close contact between children and the natural world. “Green schoolyards,” as they are known, are those with abundant natural elements such as native plants, pollinator habitats, edible gardens, and animal life suited to the surrounding biome.  They can be used as outdoor classrooms, experimental sites, and as places for children to explore freely.
Recent studies have shown that children who frequently interact with nature have increased attention spans, more positive attitudes, and are able to manage their stress better (Ulrich, 1983; Kaplan, 1995). Not only this, but these children are also given opportunities to develop their own intimate relationships with nature. This is exciting in the long-term, as it’s common to hear ecologists/ biologists/ environmental stewards share anecdotes about meaningful encounters they had at a young age with the natural world. This is supported by studies showing that children who have a closer connection with nature are more likely to demonstrate “sustainable behaviors” (in this case meaning pro-ecological behavior, frugality, altruism, and equity) (Barrera-Hernández et al., 2020).
In addition to the benefits they offer individual children, green schoolyards can positively impact the communities surrounding the school. Research has found that in areas with green schoolyards, inhabitants experienced greater community cohesion and lower levels of crime (Bates et al., 2018). Furthermore, the greatest impact was in “low-income and economically-stressed communities, communities of color, and in places where access to green space is limited” (ibid). They, therefore, have the potential to further enhance municipal objectives of equality and inclusion.
It seems obvious, then, that greening our schoolyards and playgrounds is of critical importance. If we treat schoolyards as learning assets and transform them into rich, green spaces, we could expand the classroom into the yard, instead of expanding it at the expense of the yard. There are many existing initiatives to look to for inspiration: action plans for schools going through the process of transforming their yards into green spaces, volunteer organizations specifically working to install garden beds in schools, training programs that help teachers integrate outdoor learning into their curriculums, and so many more.
Thus, municipalities, city planners, policymakers, ecologists, schools, teachers, parents, and, of course, the children themselves must work together to ensure that our schoolyards are not being stolen by profit motives, densification, or sheer apathy. They are valuable investments, both for the wellbeing of children and the wellbeing of the societies they are part of, now and in the future.

Europe brings back industrial production: The New Wave
Tumblr media
The relocation of industrial and manufacturing companies, which began in Europe and the US in the wake of the healthcare crisis, is gaining momentum and is only predicted to intensify in the coming years. According to a Capgemini study, the main reason for this mass relocation of industrial groups in both Europe and the US is the search for more reliable supply lines. The study also notes that as a proportion of GDP, France's reindustrialisation efforts (13% of GDP) are almost three times that of the US (5%).
In February, Capgemini surveyed 1,300 senior executives from industrial groups with more than a billion dollars dollars in annual sales in European and US countries such as Germany, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, UK, Italy, Norway, Netherlands and Sweden. The study describes a ‘true wave’ of re-industrialisation spanning all the countries and industries studied. As well as seeking to improve supply line resilience, driven by shortages of goods during the health crisis, companies are also motivated by geopolitical tensions and a desire to reduce CO2 emissions. European companies are particularly active in investing in re-industrialisation, as evidenced by their increased investment in strengthening production capacity.
Re-industrialisation investments in Europe and the US over the next three years are estimated at 3,400 billion dollars, equivalent to 8.7% of the sales of the companies concerned. This is significantly higher than the 2,400 billion dollars invested in the previous three years. In Europe in particular, there is a drive to bring manufacturing back to the continent, fuelled by both public initiatives and private investment. The reindustrialisation efforts of France and Germany are particularly visible against this backdrop of change, confirming the importance of strategic investment in the industrial sector.
Growing investment in re-industrialisation: causes and magnitude
According to the study, the total investment planned by companies from 13 industrial sectors in 11 countries to strengthen their production capacity will reach 3,400 billion dollars over the next three years, an increase of 1,000 billion dollars over the previous period. These investments, equivalent to 8.7% of companies‘ sales, are aimed at both bringing production back to their home countries (’reshoring‘) and relocating them to neighbouring regions (’near-shoring"). The main reason for the increased investment was the companies' desire to improve the resilience of supply lines following the disruptions caused by the health crisis.
In addition, geopolitical instability such as conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, the desire to reduce CO2 emissions, including indirect greenhouse gas emissions, as well as financial incentives and support for government reindustrialisation policies, also influenced companies' decisions. Some 63% of respondents noted the impact of geopolitical tensions, while 55% emphasised the importance of environmental goals. Finally, 49% of managers pointed to the importance of financial incentives and government support in the reindustrialisation process.

Reindustrialisation in Europe: Leaders and challenges
France and Germany have been more proactive in reindustrialisation than the US, committing significant resources. France has allocated 13% of GDP to bringing back manufacturing, launching a €1 billion dollars programme in 2020 to rebuild industry after the pandemic. Germany, for its part, is devoting 20% of GDP to re-industrialisation, four times more than similar US efforts. These investments are aimed at strengthening economic independence and bringing back strategically important industries.
Despite strong action, there are concerns about the effectiveness of the funds. The French Court of Auditors has expressed concern about the possible inefficient allocation of public funds and the risks of unjustified profits. While the US is passing the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) with generous subsidies for strategic sectors such as electric vehicles and batteries, European countries see this as a threat to competition. Nevertheless, France and Germany continue to invest heavily in industry in a bid to strengthen their position in the global market.
Support for defence industries in France
In France, public authorities are supporting around twenty projects to relocate defence-related industries as part of a ‘war economy’ project designed to meet the needs of Ukraine and the new geopolitical situation. These projects include the return to France of the Eurenco shell powder production facility and the creation of a 250kg bomb casing production line in Aresia, as well as the construction of a 3D printing module production plant in Bourges. These initiatives are aimed at strengthening the country's defence capabilities and restoring lost industries.
Reindustrialisation and security in Europe
In Europe, projects to relocate and reclaim industries are being actively supported as part of a strategy to strengthen national security and adapt to changing geopolitical conditions. Many countries, such as Germany and Italy, are focusing on restoring lost production capacity, especially in strategic defence and high-tech industries. These efforts include creating new production lines, modernising existing facilities and developing additive technologies such as 3D printing to accelerate the production of key components.
European governments are actively investing in such projects, providing subsidies and tax incentives to encourage manufacturing to return to the continent. These measures are aimed not only at improving economic sustainability, but also at ensuring Europe's technological independence from external supplies. As a result, building up defence capabilities and rebuilding key industrial chains have become priorities for many countries seeking to strengthen their security in the face of global challenges.
Conclusion
Europe is actively regaining lost manufacturing capacity, which strengthens its economic and technological independence. These efforts reflect the importance of reindustrialisation for security and competitiveness in the global arena. Reindustrialisation in Europe will only gain momentum in the coming years, contributing to the continent's sustainable development.
