x87 is such an abomination.

Well, frankly the whole of x86 is an abomination. Forty years of backwards-compatibility-focused CISC extensions will do that to you.

But x87, man. 'Cause FPUs used to be discrete, optional chips, right? Your basic-ass 8086 couldn't do floating point whatsoever, you needed to install an 8087 alongside it for that. Likewise, the 80286 needed an 80287, and the 80386 needed an 80387, and it wasn't until the i486DX that the FPU was on the same package as the CPU.

So, y'know, you couldn't talk to it directly -- like a modern GPU. It was it's own processor. Ergo, you can't actually address its registers directly. It's a stack machine. Want to add two floats? You gotta send 'em over -- one at a time -- with the FPUSH instruction, then send an FADD, then FPOP to get the result back out.

There are two divide instructions. One for if the numerator is first on the stack, another for if the denominator is first.

And it's just... still like this. After forty years. Modern CPUs have their FPUs not but micrometers from the rest of the ALU, but you still have to talk to it like it's on a different bus. No other part of the ALU operates like a stack machine -- just the x87 stuff. And it'll continue to work that way. Forever.

20250308 Major ALICE update!

For a couple months i've been working on a bunch of new stuff and improvements for Aubery's Logic Integrated Circuit Emulator (ALICE), and yesterday i concluded the works that have been planned! I am very happy to tell everyone that ALICE now crashes much less, the circuit tracing GUI became much more usable, and even more high-level devices were programmed!~

Circuit integration now works in full - watch me go from a basic logic gate based single-bit full adder to a 4-bit adder IC with a whole demo setup to test it, inside the same project!

Some high-level devices were added: everything but the ALU seems to be working correctly. TruthTable allows you to build a circuit and then compose its truth table in realtime! Using the pre-made compounds can be easier on the CPU than user-made ICs, even though i'm working on making everything run even faster. Oh, and now there's a "text" device to leave notes right on top of the circuit!

All devices now show a memo on what they do when selected, and a cohesive (although still and forever lacking) manual was started!

Finally, there are now demo projects! They and the manual are bundled within ALICE itself, so no need to download them separately from anywhere. I will work on adding more to them, with the general goal of one day having a "full basic 8-bit CPU" on the list!

Aside from these novelties, i worked real hard and made the GUI run smoother and explode less. Frankly, the code was pure spaghetti before this overhaul, and now it's at least meatballs with a side of spaghetti. It became better, i promise. Along with this, a bunch of minor bugs were eliminated, and i'm slowly ridding the project from depending on my old bmco.js utility library, which would make it run smoother.

There's a lot of plans for this project, and seeing people using it at all would greatly increase my motivation to implement them. Not like i am not motivated.. but you could make things happen faster! So! Use the thing, tell me when it explodes in your face - with saves and bug error texts preferrably - and show me what you made with it!

And one last thing: ALICE is now hosted on Gitea because i am tired of github's copilot bullshit. I will shut down the github repository soon enough -- nothing to lose, since there are no open issues out there or anything. If you feel like digging through my caverns of nonsense, or run ALICE locally, go ahead and download the source code from the Gitea repo!

– And also speaking of hc. people miss so much when they don't share hc about the younger siblings for Alucard!! I personally hc him a little sister, 2-3 years apart, but clearly smarter than his older brother. and intelligence in both parents. but it's still determined the closest would be the older, stupid, crossed-out onhe'll always take the blame, get something, protect even if it's a small thing and the wrath of them dad.

– hence the following. A couple years later, another little wolf cub shows up in Lisa's basket and I swear. It is already hard for her to carry this basket to the village together with medicines and her children, but seeing and hearing the children's cheerful cries she just wipes away a maternal tear of happiness and smiles.

– (oh!) and also Alu and his sibling definitely gnawed on the castle furniture sometime...but that's another story.

For me, i prefer to keep alucard as an only child, it adds to some further amusing moments with him and the reader (or my oc), maybe the reader would have siblings and he’d be incredibly confused onto how reader and their siblings would be deadly enemies then back to their sibling usual trope, he’s just utterly puzzled.

Teorus X Desi Reader!

I'm bored and I have the urge to write HCs, so here it is.

This ended up being more Bengali than desi, but oh well.

Teo has a sweet tooth, and loves milk. He absolutely loves it when you make him payesh on his birthday. It becomes his new favourite food. He asks you to make it every week.

You cook mach bhat from time to time, and Teo does not like having to separate all the bones from fish.

He also definitely loves other mishti(sweets) like rosogolla. When you take him to a Bengali wedding for the first time, he finishes a dozen of rosogolla at once. Plus, he downs a load of doi and ice cream after that.

Don't forget alu bhaja. Teo and you devour tons of them every night at dinner.

He finds you talking in Bengali cute and wants to learn it too. :)

He finds it cute even when you argue with him in Bengali. (Don't cuss him too much please.)

Teo loves hearing Bengali songs that you sing, especially those about love.

He definitely doesn't have a crush on Suchitra Sen.
