Flaws in Salem’s Core Goal: Destroying Remnant to End Her Curse
Salem’s plan hinges on summoning the Brother Gods by collecting the four Relics, hoping they will judge humanity as irredeemable and destroy Remnant, thereby ending her immortality curse. This plan has several critical flaws:
Misinterpretation of the Curse’s Terms:
The curse, as imposed by the Gods of Light and Darkness, states that Salem will remain immortal “for as long as the world keeps turning” and until she learns the importance of life and death. Salem interprets this as a loophole: if Remnant is destroyed, the world stops “turning,” potentially freeing her from immortality. However, this assumption is speculative and flawed:
Ambiguity of “World”: The curse’s wording is vague. “The world” could refer to Remnant specifically, the physical planet, or a metaphysical concept tied to existence itself. If the gods destroy Remnant, they might create a new world or preserve Salem’s immortality in another form, as her curse is tied to their divine will, not just the planet’s existence.
Failure to Learn the Lesson: The curse explicitly requires Salem to understand the balance of life and death. Destroying Remnant to escape her curse sidesteps this lesson entirely, focusing on a technicality rather than personal growth. The gods, being omniscient and punitive, are unlikely to reward such manipulation, as seen in their harsh punishment for her initial deception (trying to resurrect Ozma).
Evidence from Canon: In RWBY Volume 8, Salem’s exhaustion with her immortal existence is clear when she calls Remnant a “ruined world.” However, her repeated failures to die (e.g., the Pools of Annihilation) suggest the gods’ magic is absolute. Her belief that destroying Remnant will end her curse ignores the possibility that the gods could reinterpret or extend her punishment, as they did when she tried to defy them before.
Underestimating the Brother Gods’ Nature:
I noted that “the Brother Gods are merciless and obviously will punish her worse.” This is a critical flaw in Salem’s plan. The gods’ past behavior suggests they are not merciful but rather strict and vengeful when defied:
Historical Precedent: When Salem manipulated them into resurrecting Ozma, the God of Light cursed her with immortality as punishment, and the God of Darkness later wiped out humanity for her rebellion. Their response was disproportionate and uncompromising, indicating they prioritize their divine authority over mercy.
Risk of Harsher Punishment: If Salem summons the gods and they judge humanity irredeemable, they may destroy Remnant but still refuse to lift her curse. Instead, they could impose a worse fate—perhaps eternal suffering in a void or a new form of torment—since she’s attempting to exploit their rules again. Her plan assumes the gods will act predictably, but their capricious nature (seen in their creation and destruction of humanity) makes this unlikely.
From Prior Conversations: If we assume prior discussions emphasized the gods’ punitive nature (common in RWBY lore analysis), Salem’s failure to account for their unpredictability is a recurring blind spot. She underestimates their ability to outmaneuver her, as they did when they destroyed her kingdom and humanity in the past.
Dependence on Relics and Humanity’s Division:
Salem’s plan requires collecting the four Relics to summon the gods, but this is logistically and strategically flawed:
Relic Acquisition: The Relics are guarded by the Huntsman Academies, and Salem’s efforts to retrieve them (e.g., the Fall of Beacon, the attack on Atlas) have met resistance from Ozpin’s allies and Team RWBY. Her reliance on subordinates like Cinder, who are driven by personal ambition, introduces variables she cant fully control. For example, Cinder’s power-hungry nature (as seen in Volumes 3–8) often undermines Salem’s broader strategy.
Humanity’s Unity: The gods will only destroy Remnant if humanity is divided and irredeemable. However, Team RWBY and their allies consistently work to unite humanity (e.g., rallying forces in Atlas, spreading the truth about Salem via Amity Tower). If humanity unites, the gods may spare Remnant, rendering Salem’s plan futile. Her efforts to sow division (e.g., through Grimm attacks and manipulation) are countered by the heroes’ resilience, which she underestimates.
Canon Example: In Volume 8, Salem’s siege of Atlas fails to secure the Relic of Creation due to Team RWBY’s intervention, highlighting her overreliance on force and underestimation of her opponents’ ingenuity.
Self-Destructive Paradox:
Salem’s goal is inherently self-destructive, as her immortality has made her a being of “pure destruction” (post-Pools of Annihilation). However, her plan to end her life by destroying Remnant contradicts her own survival instinct and past actions:
Historical Context: Salem once sought to rule alongside Ozma, posing as gods to unite humanity. Her shift from creation (building a kingdom) to destruction (ending Remnant) reflects her despair but ignores her capacity for leadership and manipulation. If she truly seeks death, she could explore other means (e.g., reconciling with Ozma or seeking redemption), but her fixation on destruction blinds her to alternatives.
Psychological Flaw: Her death-seeking nature, as seen in her suicide attempts and disdain for Remnant, suggests a nihilistic mindset that may cloud her judgment. By focusing solely on ending her curse, she overlooks the possibility that her actions could perpetuate her suffering, especially if the gods intervene.
Flaws in the Perceived Goal: Ruling the World with the Relics
The RWBY guidebook’s depiction of Salem’s goal as ruling the world with the Relics likely reflects a misinterpretation or deliberate deception on her part to motivate her followers. This perceived goal also has significant flaws:
Contradiction with Canon Intent:
The guidebook’s claim that Salem seeks to rule Remnant as a god-like figure contradicts Ozpin’s revelation in the series that her true goal is to destroy the world. This discrepancy suggests the guidebook reflects either outdated lore, a misinterpretation by characters within the RWBY universe, or Salem’s own propaganda:
Deception for Followers: Salem allows subordinates like Cinder to believe she seeks a new world order because it aligns with their ambitions. For example, Cinder’s pursuit of the Maiden powers and Relics (Volumes 3–8) is driven by her desire for dominance, which Salem exploits. This deception is fragile, as followers might rebel if they learn her true goal is annihilation, not rulership.
Canon Evidence: In Volume 8, Salem’s dialogue (e.g., calling Remnant a “ruined world”) and her relentless pursuit of the Relics align with destruction, not governance. Her past as a ruler with Ozma ended in disaster due to their conflicting ideals, suggesting she has little interest in repeating that role.
Impracticality of Ruling with Relics:
Even if Salem genuinely sought to rule Remnant, the Relics’ powers are not designed for sustained governance:
Relic Limitations: The Relics (Knowledge, Creation, Destruction, Choice) have specific functions and limitations. The Relic of Knowledge offers limited questions, Creation requires precise instructions, Destruction is a blunt tool, and Choice’s power is ambiguous. These artifacts are better suited for specific tasks than establishing a global empire.
Historical Failure: Salem and Ozma’s attempt to rule as gods failed when their kingdom collapsed due to their ideological differences. Repeating this with the Relics would likely face similar resistance, especially from Ozpin’s forces and a more fragmented Remnant.
Logistical Challenges: Ruling a world ravaged by her Grimm attacks (e.g., the destruction of Vale and Atlas/Mantle, as I mentioned) would be impractical. A depopulated, chaotic Remnant offers little to govern, undermining the feasibility of this goal.
Motivational Misalignment with Followers:
The promise of rulership motivates followers like Cinder, but Salem’s true destructive intent creates a disconnect:
Cinder’s Ambition: Cinder’s actions (e.g., stealing the Fall Maiden’s powers, attacking Beacon) suggest she expects personal power and status in Salem’s “new world order.” If Salem’s goal is destruction, Cinder’s loyalty could waver upon discovering the truth, as her personal goals would be nullified.
Tyrian’s Devotion: Tyrian, who knows Salem’s true goal, is a fanatic who revels in chaos, but other followers like Watts or Hazel (before his defection) were driven by personal grudges or promises of power. This misalignment risks internal betrayal, as seen with Hazel’s turn in Volume 8.
Guidebook vs. Canon Discrepancy:
I noted that “the guidebook lore varies with the canon lore,” which is a significant flaw in the perceived goal. RWBY’s guidebooks, while informative, are not always authoritative, as the show’s narrative (e.g., Ozpin’s revelations, Salem’s actions in Volumes 7–8) takes precedence. The guidebook’s depiction may reflect an earlier draft of Salem’s motivations or a deliberate red herring to obscure her true intent. This inconsistency undermines the credibility of the rulership goal and complicates its analysis.
Additional Context from Salem’s Actions and the Brother Gods
Destruction of Kingdoms (Vale, Atlas/Mantle):
I suggested that Salem’s destruction of kingdoms like Vale and Atlas/Mantle might indicate a desire to rule by eliminating opposition. However, this aligns more with her core goal of sowing division to ensure the gods judge humanity as irredeemable. Destroying kingdoms weakens humanity’s unity, making it more likely the gods will destroy Remnant. Ruling a shattered world seems secondary to her nihilistic intent, as her actions prioritize chaos over control.
Brother Gods’ Mercy and Punishment:
My comment that the gods are “merciful” is likely sarcastic, given their history of wiping out humanity and cursing Salem. Their mercy is conditional at best, tied to their experiment with humanity’s redemption (as seen in their deal with Ozma to unite humanity). If Salem summons them, their judgment is likely to prioritize their divine authority over her desires, potentially punishing her further for her defiance. This unpredictability is a fatal flaw in her plan.
Prior Conversations:
While I don’t have direct access to our prior discussions, RWBY lore analyses often highlight Salem’s tragic flaw: her inability to move beyond her grief and rage over Ozma’s death and her curse. Her fixation on destroying Remnant reflects this, but it blinds her to alternative paths (e.g., seeking redemption or reconciliation). If prior conversations emphasized her psychological complexity or the gods’ manipulative nature, they reinforce the flaws in her plan: she’s playing a game she cannot win against beings who outmatch her in power and foresight.
Conclusion
Salem’s core goal of destroying Remnant to end her curse is flawed due to her misinterpretation of the curse’s terms, underestimation of the Brother Gods’ punitive nature, reliance on unreliable subordinates and a divided humanity, and the self-destructive paradox of her nihilism. The perceived goal of ruling the world with the Relics, as per the guidebook, is equally flawed, as it contradicts canon evidence, relies on impractical tools, and risks internal betrayal due to misaligned follower motivations. The discrepancy between the guidebook and canon further undermines the rulership narrative, suggesting it’s a deception or misinterpretation. Ultimately, Salem’s plans are doomed by her inability to learn from her past and the gods’ unpredictable judgment, making her a tragic figure whose strategies are as flawed as they are destructive.

SPN S4 First Watch Reaction
Just finished Supernatural Season 4 and I have SO many feelings.
First of all—Castiel. Like?? What an entrance. And what a character. He starts off all cold and heavenly and then slowly we see him start feeling things and questioning orders and breaking rules... I love how quiet and awkward he is, but there's this sadness underneath it all. I wouldn't say his my favorite (yet) (Team Sam!!!!!) but I definately have a soft spot for him😢
And then there's Ruby… oh Ruby. I really thought she was gonna pull an Anna and be one of the "not like other demons" types who's rebelling for good reasons. Honestly, up until the last episode I still half believed she was doing it all for Sam's sake. She really played the long con and played it well. I was so mad but also impressed 😭
Also. I'm just gonna say it. Sam's hotness was out of control this season. Like the angst?? The messed up choices?? The intense stares??? The arm veins???? Girl. He's literally spiraling but looking so good doing it. And his scenes with Ruby just added fuel to the fire 🔥
The Winchester brothers' dynamic this season?? Hurts in a new way. They're still doing everything "for each other," but now there's lying, mistrust, desperation, and it's just… ugh. They love each other so much and it's destroying them. I'm stressed.
Also. Can we talk about how the writers are totally part of the fandom?? Yellow Fever? It’s a Terrible Life?? They KNOW what we’re doing with these characters. They’re feeding us. SO WELL. Starving for some s4e17 AU fics rn. Any reccomandations?

You guys have @tumblingxelian to thank for this post as it seems they want more thoughts on Blake not managing to catch Ruby. So if Blake missed Ruby in volume 8...she'd want to go feral on Neo since it's more her fault but as we know...Neo fell with Ruby. So that leaves Cinder. And we all know Blake is gonna be crying and screaming. Even more feral than when Yang fell cause she just lost her brand new sister too. Now this does not mean I think she'd win. Of course not. Cinder is a maiden. But I think she might get a few actual hits in before falling. And I also think it means she'd be much more protective of Ruby in volume 9. Talk about splitting attention. Girl would be flipping back and forth between Ruby and Yang like a damn light switch. Might put more pressure on Ruby to open up and talk. We all know she won't but hey. Just means Blake is even more devastated when Ruby tells her to shut up and then leaves. But also means the hug is ten times better when Ruby comes back and kicks the cats ass.

back to thinking about a "ruby kidnaps devin and nova's child to keep it away from the light temple" AU. love to take a good-hearted character and put them in an unconscionable situation because all the alternatives are so awful. imagining ruby having to weigh the risks vs benefits of telling baby about the danger they're in, in terms of like, there are bad people who will hurt you but they're more genetically related to you than i am so i don't know if you'll even believe me. and the risks versus benefits of telling baby any true stories about their mama back in tachni (the one who isn't the devil). and even whether to raise baby as a monolingual oichen speaker under the assumption they'll live at home all their life versus teaching them tachnin just in case the worst happens and they get dragged back and have to understand the cops n lawyers in a foreign country.
from baby's POV you grow up with a mum who's Great and helps you hit all your developmental milestones and holds you when you cry and gives you great life advice and pays attention to you and lets you have a social life n hobbies. but you also become Very attuned to your mum's stress levels, in part Because she tries so hard to hide them, and you eventually realize mum is stressed out of her mind All The Time. she watches the news a lot and sometimes you hear her crying in her bedroom when you're supposed to be asleep. and when you ask her what's wrong she won't tell you anything except maybe that she's missing your mama. and when you ask questions about said mama your mum won't even tell you whether or not she's dead. also your mum gets incredibly tense whenever anyone at school asks questions about your background & she has the two of you pack up and move whenever your teachers get a little Too concerned. and by your early teens you're like um. okay. i'm like 98% sure my mum kidnapped me from my bio parents and we've been on the run my whole life but. it's gonna be reallyyyy awkward to tell her i know that. because. she's nice :(
