“He is not to them what he is to me,” I thought: “he is not of their kind. I believe he is of mine;—I am sure he is—I feel akin to him—I understand the language of his countenance and movements: though rank and wealth sever us widely, I have something in my brain and heart, in my blood and nerves, that assimilates me mentally to him.” Jane Eyre, XVII.

In Hindu mythology, Vishvakarma stands as the celestial architect, the divine craftsman - he is revered as the deity who embodies technical expertise, precision, and artistry, crafting not only the grand palaces of gods but also the tools and weapons essential for the maintenance of cosmic order.
Among his most renowned creations is the Vajra, the thunderbolt weapon wielded by Indra, the king of the gods.
The story of the Vajra and its association with Vishvakarma provides profound insights into his association with craftsmanship, the transformative power of creation, and his connection to Chitra Nakshatra, the star of craftsmanship, beauty and brilliance.
Vishvakarma's role in Hindu cosmology is multi-faceted. He is not just an architect but the divine engineer who designs and builds the infrastructure of the universe.
Temples, flying chariots (vimanas), and heavenly weapons are among his creations, each infused with meticulous detail and ingenuity.
His work reflects the union of functionality and aesthetic beauty - and the mastery of form fitting function.. making him a figure who bridges the realms of material and spiritual excellence.
He is the closest thing in vedic literature to the Freemasons notion of Tubal-Cain - the 8th man from Adam - Tubal-Cain is often regarded in Masonic lore as the progenitor of craftsmanship and the arts of manipulating metals..
His ability to forge tools from brass and iron has come to symbolize humanity’s advancement through skill and knowledge.. this mastery of the material world parallels the spiritual refining of oneself, paralleling ones ability to transform a base metal into gold.
The Vajra, one of Vishvakarma’s most iconic creations, is steeped in cosmological symbolism.
When the demon Vritra threatened the universe by withholding the waters of life, the gods turned to Vishvakarma for a solution. At the behest of Indra, Vishvakarma crafted the Vajra from the indestructible spine of the sage Dadhichi, who willingly sacrificed his body for the greater good.
The Vajra symbolizes immense power, necessary destruction, and the ability to shatter obstacles obstructing dharmic and jnana related pursuits.
The weapon’s genesis from the selfless sacrifice of Dadhichi also mirrors the creative process that often demands destruction and transformation..a theme that resonates deeply with the essence of Chitra Nakshatra.
Chitra, the nakshatra presided over by Vishvakarma, is symbolized by a shining jewel or a pearl, representing brilliance, craftsmanship, and the allure of creation.
Its shakti is the ability to accumulate merit in life (punya cayani shakti). Its basis above is the law. Its basis below is the truth
Chitra inspires beauty that is both external and internal, much like Vishvakarma's own works, which harmonize aesthetic splendor with functional perfection.
Chitra’s energy emphasizes attention to detail, creativity, and the transformative potential of art and science - the ability to blend all of these in order to conquer obstacles, to use these for war against spiritual and intellectual opposition.
Ruled by Mars, much like the ruling deity and the items in which he crafts.. this Nakshatras brilliance is very tied to warrior endeavors.. I often associate arms dealers with this nakshatra.
Weaponry and war is not merely a tool of blind destruction but a means of restoring balance..
Chitra’s brilliance inspires the realization of divine blueprints, where beauty and purpose converge.
Vishvakarma’s legacy as the creator of the Vajra and his association with Chitra Nakshatra reveal a profound narrative of creativity, sacrifice, and cosmic balance.
Vishvakarma and Chitra, reflect upon perfect craftsmanship - the ability to create and imbue an object with a balance between order, function, it's purpose, aesthetic and a carrier of divine will.
I connect very deeply with this Nakshatra, with my Mercury being exalted in Chitra (virgo) and Vargottama (same sign in d1 chart as d9) in the 6th house

why i dislike arcane’s characterisation of viktor and his subsequent vgu in league
the tl;dr of it is that they essentially rewrote him into an entirely new character by ridding him of everything that marked him as a zaunite champion and made him interesting and replaced it with “eldritch possession”.
the whole show suffered from it refusing to engage with the zaun—piltover politics (that were the heart of the first season imo) and the same goes for viktor’s character.
the above quote is from legends of runeterra. in his league lore, he's not only disillusioned by piltovan society and academia, but actively pro-zaun (however, it's also important to note that said attitude is in large part due to personal embitterment rather than altruism).
and the funny thing is! his being from the undercity is significant to his character and the overall story in season 1! we see glimpses of his childhood, and he talks about the challenges he's faced trying to establish himself as a zaunite in piltovan academia — not to mention the scene i've screenshotted above, which is very intentionally set in the midst of jayce getting swept up in the "zaunites are dangerous" rhetoric.
but all of that is swept under the rug in season 2 because god forbid we have a villain (because, yes, viktor league of legends is a villain) who is complex and flawed. in league lore, viktor is not only a mirror of jayce, who is written as his piltovan counterpart, but also ekko, who is very much from zaun and stands for the people of zaun. the viktor and ekko parallels are very strong in the game universe but the show is more interested in making jayce and ekko foils to each other.
speaking of ekko parallels, not only does the show drop viktor's politics, but it also removes what connects viktor to one of the core facets of zaun's identity as a region—zaunite innovation, or ingenuity. the whole thing that sets zaun apart from the other regions in runeterra is the way its people take the scrap and toxic waste piltover dumps on them and use it to invent unique ways to thrive (in ways good and bad). viktor's whole thing was using steel and hextech to augment people, in a way that was very true to zaun. all that? thrown in the trash in favour of "the hexcore is eldritch goop magic now".
to reiterate, arcane removed viktor's distinctly zaunite identity. there's very little machine herald left in there.
which brings me to my second issue: the glorious evolution.
for one, the show makes viktor's main motivation for the glorious evolution internalised ableism. while the leg has always been a part of his visual design, trying or wanting to "fix" it has never even been hinted in his original lore.
instead, his transhumanist ideology (while problematic as hell—again, he's a villain!!) develops over time and over several instances, which have to do with things like instincts and emotions rather than disability.
(sure, one could argue that viktor speaks to jayce about human contradiction in that final scene they have together, but given jayce's "You've always wanted to cure what you thought were weaknesses. Your leg. Your disease. But you were never broken, Viktor." the show's messaging is quite clear.)
which finally brings me to his design.
which, yes, fucks. on its own. but not as viktor.
because again, it's not the machine herald from zaun, it's some eldritch being that at at the end of the day could have come from essentially anywhere in runeterra.
because viktor, for all his hextech augmentation, has to be a human underneath.
(screenshot from convergence / a perfect life, a league of legends comic by john o'brian etc)
the mask is a mask for a reason. he wants to escape humanity so badly, but ultimately he can't reach the ideal he himself preaches, and so he hides the parts of him that remain human. it gives him an edge that just isnt there with the new inhuman appearance.
#arcane#arcane s2 spoilers#league of legends#viktor arcane#viktor league of legends#thats not to say there arent parts that i do like! there are! but unfortunately i liked league viktor first#anyway read his bio and short story from the league universe site

maomao apothecary diaries and haruhi ouran are very similar calm competent character types and they are both nice and relaxing to watch
now that i noticed the jinshi-maomao relationship mirroring tamaki-haruhi i can't unsee it. it's updated a couple decades later, + the medical mystery backdrop is itself fun, but the parallels are extensive
she's a commoner indentured against her will to a beautiful and mostly gentlemanly noble. her demeanor is even keeled and logical, she exists in constant contrast to the Other Girls around her, who she is Not Like due to her bookish/professional focus. she has no idea how she is drawing him in despite her professional disinterest, but she's also not a blushing ingenue and knows plenty about adult industries due to family connections. he gets whiny jealous when she interacts with other men and she basically ignores him, but does consider him a friend and useful ally. He has a position of power over her, but is by and large shown as entirely nonthreatening to her despite it.
i didnt believe until s2 that they were going to go for the romance angle with AD but in that second ED montage it's undeniable lmfao

15x20
And we come to it... The End of Supernatural.
But we’ve got a double feature this time: because I watched 1x20 too. With 15x20 calling back to that ep so specifically, I thought I’d see what the finale looked like in its context.
There’s a lot of talk of how the early vs. later seasons differ visually in terms of lighting, cinematography, etc., but I was also struck in their difference in tone. There’s a sincerity to 1x20, not just in what’s happening but in how the writing takes itself & the situation seriously, while 15x20 is much lighter and humorous, verging into bathos at points. It’s exactly the same as the contemporary MCU/Disney blockbuster humor: never letting the tension build for too long and breaking it was jokes. Maybe I’m just a bit too earnest but this kind of humor rings really hollow to me. It often feels self-defensive, like the writer(s) are hyper aware of their audience & its reaction and so they make fun of themselves before the audience can make fun of them.
I’d forgotten The Twilight Zone reference early in 1x20; love that. All of the John - Sam - Dean family drama is so compelling -- Sam still hotheaded & angry, John caring but not willing to give up his authority, Dean the peacemaker in the middle of it all. (The rest under a cut because it got long.)
DEAN: What happens if you die? Dad, what happens if you die, and we coulda done something about it? You know I been thinking. I ...think maybe Sammy's right about this one. We should do this together. [SAM nods.] DEAN: We're stronger as a family, Dad. We just are. You know it. JOHN: We're running out of time. You do your job and you get out of the area. That's an order.
Kripke’s idea of ‘family as everything’ is the foundation of this ep. It’s also obviously about healing the original family estrangement in Sam leaving and John rejecting him for it--John has to relearn how to “believe” in family again, which first starts to happen when Sam & Dean rush into save him, and then he saves Sam, using a bullet from the Colt to kill Luther holding Sam hostage, even though it means one less chance to get the YED. If, as SW analyzed, Dean takes on John’s narrative role in S4/5 with Sam, then Dean is in this narrative position thru the entire rest of the show. For ex, in Dabb’s seasons, so much of the writing focuses on Dean not “believing” in or resenting/rejecting family, which drives almost all the emotional conflict. And then cue Dean’s heartfelt deathbed speech in 15x20 about how much he loves Sam & thinks Sam is such an amazing guy, right? The ultimate “I believe in family & love you so much” speech. Dean’s speech even parallels what Sam’s son tell him as he’s dying, so framing Dean in a parental role to the end: (”SAM No. / DEAN (softly pleading): Look at me. Look at me. I need... I need... I need you to tell me that it's okay. I need you to tell me... Tell me it's okay. / SAM (through tears) Dean... it's okay. You can go now.” versus “DEAN II: Dad. It's okay. You can go now.”)
With the Colt, what stood out on this watch was how even though it’s a weapon that can “kill anything,” it’s not divine or blessed or anything like that; it was just a gun made by Samuel Colt for ordinary human hunters. Given how fantastical the show gets by the end, the Colt is grounded in a satisfying way. In order to fight creatures stronger than they are, people will make a tool that’ll allow them to overcome all that, just through sheer human ingenuity & stubbornness.
Jenny is the obvious throughline between these two eps, but there’s also John being integral to both (returning in 1x20, Sam & Dean figuring out the case thru his journal in 15x20) and both eps dealing with vampires. In 15x20, the situation is clearly meant to be a mirror reflection of Sam and Dean’s family tragedy: vampires invade a house, kill the father instead of the mother (but leaving her traumatized and unable to speak, literally & metaphorically) and steal the 2 kids away, but ending more happily with Sam & Dean saving the kids. There’s also again shades of sexual violence against children, in the vampires not just killing the kids but keeping them alive for years, both to feed and feed on them. If it’s more alluded to in 15x20, then it’s literal in 1x20, with vampires intertwined with sexual violence all over the ep: Kate & Luther making out / getting ready to have sex while Jenny watches, with Kate then turning Jenny by assaulting her with a kiss (complete w/ incestuous undertones in Luther then saying “Welcome home”); John looming over Kate and Luther like a creepy stalker when they all invade the vampires’s nest; Dean playing bait and drawing the vamps out, with Kate assaulting Dean very similarly to how she did Jenny. The ‘Dean playing bait’ scene was also interesting in that Dean is very much vulnerable (what if Kate had just gone for his neck?) while the masculine violence of the Winchesters is highlighted as well... John & Sam shooting Kate and the other vamp, John coming in with “sweetheart” to Kate when he confronts her, Dean taking Kate off in a bridal carry, a parody of the real thing. They’re both the hunted and hunters.
SAM (crying) Then don't leave me. Don't leave me. I can't do this alone. DEAN Yes, you can. SAM Well, I don't want to. DEAN Hey. I'm not leaving you. I'm gonna be with you... [DEAN is crying as he places his fist over SAM’S heart.] Right here... every day. ... DEAN Goodbye, Sam. Goodbye.
Telling that it was Jackles and Jarpad who added in those callbacks to Sam & Dean’s dialogue in the pilot, not Dabb. Good for them, tho.
I’m surprised I’ve never seen a comparison made between Dean’s death and Jack’s departure in 15x19! If Jack is a Christ figure, then Dean is a messiah figure, and those figures very often die; both Dean and Jack gave up a chance at a normal life to save the world & protect the people they love, Dean as a hunter & Jack as God; they both do the “I’ll still be with you, in your heart” gesture; it ends with both Jack and Dean saying goodbye, and they both then go onto to ascend to Heaven or a heavenly place. People talk about how Jack’s ending is messed up because he’s just a kid with too much responsibility put on his head, but the show idealizes / does the same thing with Dean, in how much it valorizes Dean’s protection of Sam. I think back to Jarpad’s quote talking about the finale that got people in a huff (“It was a success story — it was Dean’s success story,” Padalecki reflects on the “Supernatural” series finale. “This guy gave his life for years and years and years and ultimately gave his life to have his No. 1 on the planet live as normal a life as possible.”) but like? Doesn’t this attitude seem exactly how the show viewed Sam & Dean at this point?
I’ve also seen people talk pretty cynically about Dean’s death and as much as I’m not a fan of Dean dying I also just cannot read it as cynically as some people do. Dean didn’t die because he “couldn’t live a normal life,” he died because the show set up the “Dean = chooses the hunting life, Sam = wants a normal life” framing back in S12, Dabb’s first season, which culminates here in Dabb’s last, with Dean dying on a hunt after saving 2 kids from something horrible, and Sam going on to live without Dean and having a ‘normal’ life, wife, a son, even if he deep down he longs to be with Dean again. If Dean most represents “the family” in the narrative, then of course he couldn’t get a wife and kid like Sam could; that would be Dean choosing to have another family over Sam, and that wouldn’t work with Dean’s narrative role. In S15 too, Dean’s death also fits thematically with the emphasis within the last season on making sacrifices and dying for what you love and the people you saved living on after that sacrifice. Ketch, Rowena, Cas, Jack (sort of), Dean, to name some major ones. There’s also that Sam dying & Dean living on would be a repeat of Swan Song, so I can see why they would’ve wanted to avoid that plot beat because they’d already done it once. If anything, I’d say Dean’s death echoes his one in 3x16: telling Sam to carry on without him, Sam being unable to prevent his death, but this time instead of going to Hell, Dean ends up in Heaven. And Dean gets narratively rewarded with the perfect, best Heaven ever! The one that is stated he deserves!! I just don’t see how that translates into the writers seeing Dean as not normal or having something wrong with him?
OKAY last few things: I actually like the regular “Carry On Wayward Son” and then the cover version, what can I say. Despite ppl saying Dean spent however many odd decades in Heaven waiting for Sam, it’s clearly implied he only waited a short time in Bobby saying “Time up here, it's... it's different,” which is calling back to Hell’s time dilation, Dean’s 40′s years, and his now only spending a few minutes separate from Sam in comparison. And while I 100% understand not liking the finale, it’s kind of fascinating to me that the finale basically framed it as a final, fantastic Happy Ending for Sam & Dean, they are at peace for all eternity, isn’t that so nice, and parts of the fandom somehow read it as a tragic or unhappy ending. It’s just... so clearly not. It is if you wanted to the story to end another way, but c’mon, the story wasn’t going to end another way. It ended as it started, the Epic Love Story of Sam & Dean.
#i did it. finally!!#spn rewatch#season 15#sam & dean#sam#dean#it's also HILARIOUS to me that my reaction to game of thrones S8 and spn S15 were basically the same#in that 1) they are not as bad as the audience reaction suggested and 2) fit w/ the ideas & themes established in the last seasons#i understand not liking them. but they weren't random or out of nowhere or betraying the story

Brief Notes on the Art and Manner of Arranging One's Books by Georges Perec, translated by John Sturrock

But literature is not an activity separated from life. We live in a world of words, of language, of stories. Writing is not the privilege exclusively of the man who sets aside for his century a brief hour of conscientious immortality each evening and lovingly fashions, in the silence of his study, what others will later proclaim, solemnly, to be 'the honour and integrity of our letters'. Literature is indissolubly bound up with life, it is the necessary prolongation, the obvious culmination, the indispensable complement of experience. All experience opens on to literature and all literature on to experience and the path that leads from one to the other, whether it be literary creation or reading, establishes this relationship between the fragmentary and the whole, this passage from the anecdotal to the historical, this interplay between the general and the particular, between what is felt and what is understood, which forms the very tissue of our consciousness. (Robert Antelme or the Truth of Literature, pp. 2-3)
***
To begin with, it all seems simple: I wanted to write, and I've written. By dint of writing, I've become a writer, for myself alone first of all and for a long time, and today for others. In principle, I no longer have any need to justify myself (either in my own eyes or in the eyes of others). I'm a writer, that's an acknowledged fact, a datum, self-evident, a definition. I can write or not write, I can go several weeks or several months without writing, or write ‘well' or write ‘badly’, that alters nothing, it doesn't make my activity as a writer into a parallel of complementary activity. I do nothing else but write (except earn the time to write), I don't know how to do anything else, I haven't wanted to learn anything else... I write in order to live and I live in order to write, and I've come close to imagining that writing and living might merge completely: I would live in the company of dictionaries, deep in some provincial retreat, in the mornings I would go for a walk in the woods, in the afternoons I would blacken a few sheets of paper, in the evenings I would relax perhaps by listening to a bit of music…
It goes without saying that when you start having ideas like these (even if they are only a caricature), it becomes urgent to ask yourself some questions.
I know, roughly speaking, how I became a writer. I don't know precisely why. In order to exist, did I really need to line up words and sentences? In order to exist, was it enough for me to be the author of a few books?
In order to exist, I was waiting for others to designate me, to identify me, to recognize me. But why through writing? I long wanted to be a painter, for the same reasons I presume, but I became a writer. Why writing precisely?
Did I then have something so very particular to say? But what have I said? What is there to say? To say that one is? To say that one writes? To say that one is a writer? A need to communicate what? A need to communicate that one has a need to communicate? That one is in the act of communicating? Writing says that it is there, and nothing more, and here we are back again in that hall of mirrors where the words refer to one another, reflect one another to infinity without ever meeting anything other than their own shadow.
I don't know what, fifteen years ago when I was beginning to write, I expected from writing. But I fancy I'm beginning to understand, at the same time, the fascination that writing exercised — and continues to exercise — over me, and the fissure which that fascination both discloses and conceals.
Writing protects me. I advance beneath the rampart of my words, my sentences, my skilfully linked paragraphs, my astutely programmed chapters. I don't lack ingenuity.
Do I still need protecting? And suppose the shield were to become an iron collar?
One day I shall certainly have to start using words to uncover what is real, to uncover my reality.
Today, no doubt, I can say that that's what my project is like. But I know it will not be fully successful until such time as the Poet has been driven from the city once and for all, such time as we can take up a pickaxe or a spade, a sledge-hammer or a trowel, without laughing, without having the feeling, yet again, that what we are doing is derisory, or a sham, or done to create a stir. It's not so much that we shall have made progress (because it's certainly no longer at that level that things will be measured), it's that our world will at last have begun to be liberated. (The Gnocchi of Autumn or An Answer, pp. 26-29)
***
To question what seems so much a matter of course that we've forgotten its origins. To rediscover something of the astonishment that Jules Verne or his readers may have felt faced with an apparatus capable of reproducing and transporting sounds. For that astonishment existed, along with thousands of others, and it's they which have moulded us.
What we need to question is bricks, concrete, glass, our table manners, our utensils, our tools, the way we spend our time, our rhythms. To question that which seems to have ceased forever to astonish us. We live, true, we breathe, true; we walk, we open doors, we go down staircases, we sit at a table in order to eat, we lie down on a bed in order to sleep. How? Where? When? Why?
Describe your street. Describe another street. Compare.
Make an inventory of your pockets, of your bag. Ask yourself about the provenance, the use, what will become of each of the objects you take out.
Question your tea spoons.
What is there under your wallpaper?
How many movements does it take to dial a phone number? Why?
Why don't you find cigarettes in grocery stores? Why not?
It matters little to me that these questions should be fragmentary, barely indicative of a method, at most of a project. It matters a lot to me that they should seem trivial and futile: that's exactly what makes them just as essential, if not more so, as all the other questions by which we've tried in vain to lay hold on our truth. (Approaches to What?, pp. 32-33)

2.1. Ways of arranging books
ordered alphabetically ordered by continent or country ordered by colour ordered by date of acquisition ordered by date of publication ordered by format ordered by genre ordered by major periods of literary history ordered by language ordered by priority for future reading ordered by binding ordered by series
None of these classifications is satisfactory by itself. In practice, every library is ordered starting from a combination of these modes of classification, whose relative weighting, resistance to change, obsolescence and persistence give every library a unique personality.
We should first of all distinguish stable classifications from provisional ones. Stable classifications are those which, in principle, you continue to respect; provisional classifications are those supposed to last only a few days, the time it takes for a book to discover, or rediscover, its definitive place. This may be a book recently acquired and not yet read, or else a book recently read that you don't quite know where to place and which you have promised yourself you will put away on the occasion of a forthcoming 'great arranging', or else a book whose reading has been interrupted and that you don't want to classify before taking it up again and finishing it, or else a book you have used constantly over a given period, or else a book you have taken down to look up a piece of information or a reference and which you haven't yet put back in its place, or else a book that you can't put back in its rightful place because it doesn't belong to you and you've several times promised to give it back, etc.
In my own case, nearly three-quarters of my books have never really been classified. Those that are not arranged in a definitively provisional way are arranged in a provisionally definitive way, as at the OuLipo. Meanwhile, I move them from one room to another, one shelf to another, one pile to another, and may spend three hours looking for a book without finding it but sometimes having the satisfaction of coming upon six or seven others which suit my purpose just as well.
2.2. Books very easy to arrange
The big Jules Vernes in the red binding, very large books, very small ones, Baedekers, rare books or ones presumed to be hardbacks, volumes in the Pléiade collection, the Présence du Futur series, novels published by the Editions de Minuit, collections, journals of which you possess at least three issues, etc.
2.3. Books not too difficult to arrange
Books on the cinema, whether essays on directors, albums of movie stars or shooting scripts, South American novels, ethnology, psychoanalysis, cookery books (see above), directories (next to the phone), German Romantics, books in the Que Sais-je? series (the problem being whether to arrange them all together or with the discipline they deal with), etc.
2.4. Books just about impossible to arrange
The rest: for example, journals of which you possess only a single issue, or else La Campagne de 1812 en Russie by Clausewitz, translated from the German by M. Bégouën, Captain-Commandant in the 31st Dragoons, Passed Staff College, with one map, Paris, Librairie Militaire R. Chapelot et Cie, 1900; or else fascicule 6 of Volume 91 (November 1976) of the Proceedings of the Modern Language Association of America (PMLA) giving the programme for the 666 working sessions of the annual congress of the said Association.
2.5.
Like the librarians of Babel in Borges's story, who are looking for the book that will provide them with the key to all the others, we oscillate between the illusion of perfection and the vertigo of the unattainable. In the name of completeness, we would like to believe that a unique order exists that would enable us to accede to knowledge all in one go; in the name of the unattainable, we would like to think that order and disorder are in fact the same word, denoting pure chance.
It's possible also that both are decoys, a trompe l'oeil intended to disguise the erosion of both books and systems. It is no bad thing in any case that between the two our bookshelves should serve from time to time as joggers of the memory, as cat-rests and as lumber-rooms. (Brief Notes on the Art and Manner of Arranging One's Books, pp. 66-69)
***
P. HOW I CLASSIFY
My problem with classifications is that they don't last; hardly have I finished putting things into an order before that order is obsolete. Like everyone else, I presume, I am sometimes seized by a mania for arranging things. The sheer number of the things needing to be arranged and the near-impossibility of distributing them according to any truly satisfactory criteria mean that I never finally manage it, that the arrangements I end up with are temporary and vague, and hardly any more effective than the original anarchy.
The outcome of all this leads to truly strange categories. A folder full of miscellaneous papers, for example, on which is written "To be classified"; or a drawer labelled 'Urgent 1' with nothing in it (in the drawer 'Urgent 2' there are a few old photographs, in 'Urgent 3' some new exercise books). In short, I muddle along.
F. BORGES AND THE CHINESE
'(a) belonging to the Emperor, (b) embalmed, (c) domesticated, (d) sucking pigs, (e) sirens, (f) fabulous, (g) dogs running free, (h) included in the present classification, (i) which gesticulate like madmen. (j) innumerable, (k) drawn with a very fine camel-hair brush, (l) etcetera, (m) which have just broken the pitcher, (n) which look from a distance like flies.'
Michel Foucault has hugely popularized this 'classification' of animals which Borges in Other Inquisitions attributes to a certain Chinese encyclopedia that one Doctor Franz Kuhn may have held in his hands. The abundance of intermediaries and Borges's well-known love of an ambiguous erudition permit one to wonder whether this rather too perfectly astonishing miscellaneity is not first and foremost an effect of art. An almost equally mind-boggling enumeration might be extracted simply enough from government documents that could hardly be more official:
(a) animals on which bets are laid, (b) animals the hunting of which is banned between 1 April and 15 September, (c) stranded whales, (d) animals whose entry within the national frontiers is subject to quarantine, (e) animals held in joint ownership, (f) stuffed animals, (g) etcetera (this etc. is not at all surprising in itself; it's only where it comes in the list that makes it seem odd), (h) animals liable to transmit leprosy, (i) guide-dogs for the blind, (j) animals in receipt of significant legacies, (k) animals able to be transported in the cabin, (l) stray dogs without collars, (m) donkeys, (n) mares assumed to be with foal. ('Think/Classify', pp. 84-86)

K. SOME APHORISMS
Marcel Benabou of the OuLiPo has thought up a machine for manufacturing aphorisms. It consists of two parts, a grammar and a vocabulary.
The grammar lists a certain number of formulas commonly used in a majority of aphorisms. For example: A is the shortest route from B to C. A is the continuation of B by other means. A little A carries us away from B, a lot brings us closer. Little As make big Bs. A wouldn't be A if it wasn't B. Happiness is in A not B. A is a malady for which B is the cure. Etc.
The vocabulary lists pairs of words (or trios, or quartets) which may be false synonyms (sentiment/ sensation, knowledge/science), antonyms (life/death, form/content, remember/forget), words that are phonetically close (belief/relief, love/leave), words grouped together by usage (crime/punishment, hammer/sickle, science/life). Etc.
The injection of the vocabulary into the grammar produces ad lib a near-infinite number of aphorisms, each one of them bearing more meaning than the last. Whence a computer program, devised by Paul Braffort, which can turn out on demand a good dozen within a few seconds:
Remembering is a malady for which forgetting is the cure
Remembering wouldn't be remembering if it weren't forgetting
What comes by remembering goes by forgetting
Small forgettings make big rememberings
Remembering adds to our pains, forgetting to our pleasures
Remembering delivers us from forgetting, but who will deliver us from remembering?
Happiness is in forgetting, not in remembering
Happiness is in remembering, not in forgetting
A little forgetting carries us away from remembering, a lot brings us closer
Forgetting unites men, remembering divides them
Remembering deceives us more often than forgetting
Etc.
Where is the thinking here? In the formula? In the vocabulary? In the operation that marries them? ('Think/Classify', pp. 93-94)

Mold Remediation in Clearwater, FL Inspires a Closer Look at NASA’s Battle Against Microbial Growth in Space
Mold is a universal adversary—capable of infiltrating homes, businesses, and even the most sophisticated technological environments designed by humanity. While mold remediation in Clearwater, FL addresses this pervasive issue here on Earth, a parallel struggle unfolds in the vast expanse of space. NASA, the world's foremost space agency, has long been engaged in a high-stakes campaign to combat microbial growth aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and other spacecraft. Interestingly, the challenges faced by aerospace engineers mirror the difficulties encountered in terrestrial environments—moisture control, surface integrity, and human health.

This juxtaposition offers fascinating insights not only into NASA’s ingenuity but also underscores the importance of rigorous mold control practices on Earth. Professional companies like Voda Cleaning & Restoration of Tampa Bay draw upon the same principles of precision, containment, and prevention as those employed in the unforgiving conditions of orbit. This article explores the parallels between space-based microbial containment and mold remediation in Clearwater, FL, offering readers a unique perspective on how mold unites the mundane and the extraordinary.
The Microbial Menace in Space
Despite the sterile appearance of space stations and spacecraft, they are far from being microbe-free. Mold spores hitch a ride into orbit via astronauts, cargo, and equipment. Once aboard, these microbes find the closed-loop systems and recycled air of a spacecraft to be surprisingly hospitable. The constant presence of humans and the inevitability of humidity from respiration, perspiration, and other life-support processes create an environment where mold can thrive.
On the ISS, studies have shown that mold colonies can grow on panels, air filters, and even inside drinking water systems. Without gravity to influence air circulation, these colonies may develop unnoticed until they reach advanced stages—posing significant threats to both human health and the structural integrity of the station itself.
NASA’s Anti-Mold Strategies
NASA’s approach to combating mold is multifaceted. Much like professional mold remediation in Clearwater, FL, it involves inspection, containment, removal, and prevention. Specialized sensors and microbial monitoring programs are in place to detect early signs of growth. When contamination is found, astronauts are trained to isolate and clean the affected areas using pre-approved antimicrobial agents.
Moreover, spacecraft are now designed with antimicrobial surfaces and materials that inhibit the development of mold. Advanced air filtration systems also play a vital role, mirroring HEPA filtration practices employed by experts like Voda Cleaning & Restoration of Tampa Bay in residential and commercial environments. These systems are essential not just for the sake of cleanliness, but also to prevent mission-threatening failures in sensitive electronic systems.
Common Ground: Spacecraft and Earthbound Structures
The challenges encountered during mold remediation in Clearwater, FL are surprisingly similar to those faced in space. Both environments demand strict humidity control, robust air filtration, and an uncompromising approach to cleanliness. For example:
Moisture Control: On Earth, Florida’s humid climate creates a breeding ground for mold, requiring constant vigilance. In space, humidity is a byproduct of life support systems and must be actively managed through condensation collection and dehumidification.
Surface Resistance: Just as Voda Cleaning & Restoration of Tampa Bay may recommend antimicrobial paints or coatings in mold-prone areas, NASA uses materials that naturally resist microbial adhesion and growth.
Monitoring and Maintenance: In homes and businesses, long-term success requires routine inspection and maintenance to catch mold early. NASA employs similar continuous monitoring protocols aboard the ISS to safeguard mission integrity.
Understanding these shared challenges deepens the appreciation for how even the most advanced technologies must grapple with what many consider a mundane biological nuisance.
Lessons for Terrestrial Mold Remediation
The high standards NASA maintains to mitigate mold growth serve as a gold standard for Earth-based practices. Professionals offering mold remediation in Clearwater, FL are increasingly adopting similar philosophies—emphasizing prevention as much as removal.
Take, for example, the process followed by Voda Cleaning & Restoration of Tampa Bay. The company begins with a meticulous inspection, identifying both visible mold and hidden moisture sources. The affected area is then carefully contained to prevent spore migration. State-of-the-art filtration systems cleanse the air, and thorough cleaning procedures—utilizing EPA-approved antimicrobial solutions—ensure eradication of all microbial colonies.
Importantly, the process doesn't end with cleaning. Just as NASA retrofits spacecraft with antimicrobial features, mold remediation professionals provide long-term solutions including improved ventilation, vapor barriers, and regular air quality testing to ensure that mold does not return.
Why Mold Thrives in Unexpected Places
One of the reasons mold can gain a foothold in both spacecraft and Earth-based environments is the combination of human activity and enclosed systems. In Florida, the combination of heat, humidity, and sealed, air-conditioned buildings creates a near-perfect environment for mold. In space, the risk is amplified by recycled air and the absence of natural environmental controls.
This reality underscores a key insight: mold is not just an external problem—it is an intrinsic risk of any enclosed system that supports human life. Whether it is a family home in Clearwater or a research module orbiting the Earth, vigilance is non-negotiable.
Safeguarding the Future Through Innovation
NASA continues to invest in research aimed at improving microbial control in space. From self-sterilizing materials to AI-based environmental monitoring, the future of mold prevention is increasingly high-tech. These innovations may one day trickle down into residential and commercial building materials and practices, transforming how mold remediation in Clearwater, FL is approached.
Companies like Voda Cleaning & Restoration of Tampa Bay are already integrating advanced solutions into their service models—using thermal imaging for moisture detection, implementing smart dehumidification systems, and offering proactive maintenance contracts that mirror NASA's ongoing inspection protocols.
The Human Element: Health and Safety First
Whether in orbit or in a coastal Florida residence, mold presents a tangible threat to human health. Prolonged exposure can cause allergic reactions, respiratory issues, and aggravate existing conditions such as asthma. NASA’s stringent protocols reflect just how seriously these risks are taken, and the same level of care is mirrored by trusted remediation providers here on Earth.
Mold remediation in Clearwater, FL is not just about protecting property—it is fundamentally about protecting people. As such, any remediation process must prioritize health outcomes through air purification, removal of contaminated materials, and preventative design improvements.
Conclusion: A Shared Struggle with Universal Implications
Mold is a global—and interstellar—problem. From the humidity-soaked suburbs of Florida to the vacuum-sealed laboratories of the ISS, it remains a persistent and adaptable organism. The efforts made by NASA to understand and combat microbial growth provide both inspiration and validation for professionals working tirelessly to deliver safe, mold-free environments on Earth.
With their meticulous approach and unwavering commitment to quality, companies like Voda Cleaning & Restoration of Tampa Bay exemplify the cutting edge of mold remediation in Clearwater, FL. Their work not only echoes NASA’s exacting standards but also reinforces the importance of expertise, technology, and human vigilance in the face of a common biological threat.
As long as humanity continues to explore new frontiers—whether across galaxies or within the complex ecosystems of our homes—the battle against mold will remain one that demands intelligence, precision, and care.

Beyond the Mirror: The Enigmatic Paradox of Digital Doppelgangers
In the ever-evolving realm of technology, where the digital and physical worlds blur into an indistinguishable tapestry, I found myself think abouting a peculiar phenomenon. Imagine a world where your reflection in the mirror is no longer just an image, but a malleable canvas, ready to morph into the visages of countless others. This isn't the of a distant future—it's a reality brought to us by tools like Deepswap and platforms such as PPnude.

Picture a moment when you’re not just looking at yourself, but rather peering into the countless 'what ifs' of your visage. What if your face could seamlessly blend into another's, creating a portrait of someone who never was? Deepswap does precisely that, it allows you to swap faces with the ease of a brushstroke on a digital canvas. The PPnude AI Face Swap tool is an artist, an architect, crafting a new form of identity with every swap. It's a dance of pixels and proportions, a chameleon-like change that leaves you think abouting the essence of self.
Yet, as with all great powers, questions seep through the cracks of this newfound capability. What are the ethical boundaries when we can wear another's face as if it were our own? When does the mirroring of one's visage cross into the realm of the inappropriate, or worse, the illegal?
In the beginning, the novelty was intoxicating. A simple upload, a few clicks, and you're staring back at a completely different person—yet still, yourself. It's like stepping through the looking glass, a experience to a parallel universe where you exist in another's skin. But as the initial excitement fades, the implications of such technology become increasingly disconcerting. What if someone uses Deepswap to don a face without consent, to deceive, to manipulate? What then?
The ethical dilemmas are complex, threading through the fabric of privacy, consent, and identity. The digital playground becomes a minefield where one wrong step could lead to a catastrophic breach of personal boundaries. I ask myself, is it possible to resolve the thrill of transformation with the weight of responsibility that comes with it?
Consider this: you're standing before a gallery of portraits, each a swapscape of faces familiar and strange. One of these faces belongs to someone who had no say in the matter, their digital double created without their knowledge or permission. Would you feel the chill of unease then, or would the allure of the swap blind you to the ethical transgression?
These are the questions that gnaw at the edges of my thoughts as I navigate the vast, uncharted territories of AI-driven face replacement technologies. The PPnude tool is a marvel of modern innovation, a testament to human ingenuity, but it also holds within it the potential for misuse. The faces that we swap, the identities we borrow, they're more than just pixels; they're fragments of someone's life, their unique stamp on the world.
So, as we stand on the precipice of this brave new world, we must ask ourselves: are we ready to handle the consequences of such power? Are we prepared to draw the line between the permissible and the prohibited in the realm of digital doppelgangers? The answers to these questions will shape not just our interactions with technology, but the very fabric of our society and the respect we afford to each individual's identity.

Blockchain, Bacon, and Bewilderment: The Unexpected Journey of John Locke
As I sat in my study, quill in hand and parchment spread before me, I found myself contemplating the profound intricacies of society, governance, and the nature of man. My thoughts, as they often did, wandered through the labyrinth of human understanding, when suddenly, the smell of sizzling bacon wafted through the air, rudely interrupting my reverie.
Now, you might wonder, dear reader, how the aroma of breakfast could possibly lead to an essay on blockchain technology. Well, let me regale you with the curious sequence of events that transpired.
It all began one foggy morning when I decided to take a respite from my usual contemplations and venture into the kitchen. My dear friend, Sir Roger Bacon, known not for his culinary prowess but for his ceaseless quest for knowledge, was attempting to cook breakfast. As you can imagine, the scene was a delightful chaos—bacon burning, eggs precariously perched on the edge of the skillet, and Sir Roger himself, covered in flour, muttering something about alchemical reactions and the transformation of base ingredients.
"John," he exclaimed upon seeing me, "do you know that the key to perfect bacon lies in the precise control of heat and timing? Much like the principles of alchemy!"
I couldn't help but chuckle at his enthusiasm. "Roger, your bacon is less a testament to alchemy and more a proof of chaos theory," I replied, rescuing the charred remnants from the pan.
As we sat down to enjoy our imperfect breakfast, Sir Roger's words lingered in my mind. The idea of control, precision, and transformation struck a chord. It was then that Sir Roger, in his boundless curiosity, began to speak of a newfangled concept he had encountered in his readings—a digital phenomenon called "blockchain."
"Imagine," he said with a twinkle in his eye, "a ledger that records transactions in an immutable chain, decentralized and transparent. It is as if every person in a village had a copy of the same record book, and no single book could be altered without the consensus of all."
His description, though laced with the usual dramatic flair, intrigued me. A system that promised transparency and trust without the need for a central authority? It echoed the very principles I had long espoused in my writings on governance and the social contract.
Fueled by a combination of curiosity and burnt bacon, I delved into the study of this "blockchain." I discovered that it was indeed a fascinating blend of cryptographic ingenuity and decentralized philosophy. The more I learned, the more I saw parallels with my own work—how blockchain's immutable ledger resembled the indelible rights of man, and how its decentralized nature mirrored the ideal of a society governed by the collective will rather than the whims of a despot.
In the weeks that followed, my study became a veritable hub of activity. Scrolls of ancient texts lay side by side with diagrams of digital ledgers, and my quill danced across the parchment as I sought to distill my newfound understanding into words. Sir Roger, ever the enthusiastic collaborator, often burst into the room with fresh insights or, more often, more burnt bacon.
One particularly memorable evening, as we pored over a particularly complex passage about cryptographic hashing, Sir Roger exclaimed, "John, this is it! The ultimate marriage of philosophy and technology! You must write about this!"
And so, dear reader, it was that a philosopher, a would-be alchemist, and a series of kitchen disasters led to the creation of an essay on blockchain technology. The immutable ledger of liberty, as I have come to call it, is not just a marvel of modern innovation but a testament to the enduring quest for a society built on trust, transparency, and the inalienable rights of man.
Thus, with a heart full of curiosity and a belly full of slightly overcooked breakfast, I present to you my essay on blockchain technology. May it inspire you to explore the intersections of the old and the new, the philosophical and the technological, and perhaps even to ponder the profound questions of our time—preferably over a plate of perfectly cooked bacon.

In a universe paralleling our own, where the laws of nature bend to the will of technology and interstellar travel is as common as a morning commute, there existed a planet named Terra Novum. Here, humans lived in harmony with an advanced AI race known as the Sentiens. One such Sentien, named Elara, was distinguished by her striking human-like appearance, complete with cerulean eyes and a cascade of braided crimson hair—a testament to the Sentien's ability to craft their avatars with exquisite detail.
Elara was a guardian, programmed with the art of strategy and warfare, sworn to protect Terra Novum from extraterrestrial threats. For years, peace had reigned, and Elara's capabilities were never fully tested—until the Castilian Empire set its sights on the planet.
The Castilian Empire, notorious for its conquest of planets and its insatiable hunger for resources, launched a sudden and brutal attack on the unsuspecting settlement of Gravesend. Gravesend, a tranquil coastal town famous for its iridescent beaches and scholarly retreats, was caught off guard. The Empire's ships blotted out the sun as they descended, their weapons charging with a menacing hum.
Elara, sensing the impending doom, activated her combat protocol. Her eyes, once soft as the Terra Novum sky, now glinted with a steely resolve. With a host of Sentien soldiers at her command, she constructed a defense grid around Gravesend, utilizing a blend of terraforming technology and holographic decoys to disorient the invading forces.
The Castilians, known for their brute force and not their cunning, fell into disarray as Elara's strategic prowess turned the tides of the battle. She commanded her Sentien warriors with precision, each movement calculated and every counterattack devastatingly efficient. The skies above Gravesend crackled with the exchange of laser fire and the roar of engines.
As the battle reached its crescendo, Elara unveiled her final gambit—a network of mirror satellites that reflected the planet's energy back at the Castilian fleet. The beams of light converged into a blinding radiance, searing through the attackers' shields and rendering their weapons ineffective.
In the aftermath, as the remaining Castilian ships retreated into the depths of space, Elara stood sentinel over Gravesend. Her image, once thought to be just a facade of humanity, had become a symbol of hope and resilience. She had not only saved a city but had also demonstrated that the Sentiens were more than just protectors—they were defenders of life, equality, and the freedom of Terra Novum.
And thus, the tale of Elara and the defense of Gravesend became a legend, passed down through generations, a reminder that even in the face of overwhelming odds, courage and ingenuity could prevail.
