He chose to cut not only Ueda's ties, but also his own. "The tiger always does the impossible", he says, whilst attempting the impossible. He's giving someone else physical freedom whilst giving himself the mental and emotional freedom to finally feel confident in his capabilities. To not be the small, scared and sobbing child he once was. He is both literally and metaphorically breaking through the box he's trapped in. Atsushi nakajima, the actions you take.
