I'd say this is my take on Naruko, but I actually made her an oc a very long time ago called Menma (Ema) Uzumaki, Naruto's twin sister, and this is her design during Boruto's era. 🍥🐸

A new trailer for Naruto's birthday was released on October 10, celebrating the core moments and "achievements of everyone's favorite ninja!"
Fans have been blessed this year with numerous trailers and teasers for the Naruto franchise, with a recent one celebrating where it all started for the beloved anime character on his Oct. 10 birthday.
The special trailer from Weekly Shonen Jump's YouTube channel featured iconic lines and scenes from the anime, such as "I'll surpass the Hokage! I'll make everyone acknowledge my existence!" when he first introduced himself to Sasuke, Sakura and Kakashi-sensei, as well as one of the first times that Team 7 truly came together. As fans remember, Naruto's journey wasn't plain-sailing, with the trailer also showcasing the opening rift between Naruto and Sasuke, but also in Naruto Shippuden where his feats and charisma finally earned him the acceptance he'd sought from the first chapter, which at least on the surface was the reverse of Sasuke's story. A short message attached to the trailer reads, "A special PV was released on October 10th, Naruto Uzumaki's birthday."
youtube
Arguably, the biggest drop that fans were expecting this year was the four new remastered Naruto episodes. A nearly 10-minute trailer was released last October, building up excitement for the already-crisp production. These were delayed indefinitely in a statement by Naruto's production committee, citing further improvements to the quality were necessary. With fights like Naruto and Sasuke vs. Momoshiki ranking in many top 10 fights of the last decade lists, fans were largely disappointed at the announcement but remained expectant.
New, official birthday columns from the Naruto website delve deeper into core moments from the manga and "celebrate the birthday and achievements of everyone's favorite ninja!" Revealing that Naruto is a Libra star sign, and that alongside the iconic Ichiraku ramen, Naruto's favorite food is oshiruko (red bean soup with mochi), it describes the column event with, "Today we'll be reminiscing about the boy once famous for his failures who doggedly pursued his shinobi way and became the Seventh Hokage: Naruto Uzumaki!"
After reading the columns, the site encourages readers to check out the manga from the beginning. Viz Media holds the license for North America, describing the Naruto series as follows: "Twelve years ago the Village Hidden in the Leaves was attacked by a fearsome threat. A nine-tailed fox spirit claimed the life of the village leader, the Hokage, and many others. Today, the village is at peace and a troublemaking kid named Naruto is struggling to graduate from Ninja Academy. His goal may be to become the next Hokage, but his true destiny will be much more complicated. The adventure begins now!"

Tbh I always assumed these smaller seals were gibberishly illustrated, since the Naruto series isn’t exactly known for having tiny-but-packs-a-super-symbolic-punch details, and the illustrators have a million chapters & episodes to work on anyway, so no need to complexify their own workload on details that don’t impact the originally-prescribed plot. With the bigger seals where there’s only 1 kanji per sheet, the kanji is illustrated more legibly to show the audience what this Big Bulky Seal functions as; although, I’m not sure if this means the smaller and/or denser seals are more powerful or have wider utility range, or if the calligraphy’s complexity doesn’t necessarily determine the seal’s strength more than, say, the chakra & intentions & willpower imbued into the seal.
BUT!
I’m a bit surprised at how strikingly kanji-like that 2nd image Yunyu attached is...
Tumblr media
It’s rather sloppily-written (or maybe my standard for calligraphy aesthetic is too high? 😅), and I don’t know what the context of this scene/“snapshot” of alive Mito is (generally a very important factor to consider), but I’m willing to bet this says 全軍覆沒 (meaning “the whole army is annihilated” or “a complete wipeout” in reference to an army or troop of beings failing to achieve something)
Let’s all exercise our own imaginations on the whys and wherefores she might be writing about that lmao
The seals in the 1st image might’ve had real Japanese sentences (containing kanji & hiragana) as the original idea behind it, but the execution certainly aims for it to be legible to whomever is called Not A Single Soul. That 3rd image looks Manchurian-esque (and therefore also Mongolian-esque, so it could’ve pulled inspiration from either of these 2) and that was likely the illustrator’s intention, but in terms of what the words actually say, I believe it’s pure gibberish, this time. If anyone here is more proficient in reading Manchurian or Mongolian, please correct me 🙏
Hi there! Wanted to ask if you could translate what is written on Mito Uzumaki's seal tags (those she has in her hair)? I was super curious about it ever since I've seen them but couldn't find the explanation anywhere, and only now I realized that you would be a perfect person to ask!! Thanks!
Hahaha, unfortunately I can’t help you much, I can maybe provide a little insight.

So you can see in these three manga caps that the calligraphy on her seals are not done the same way every time.
The connecting factor is an extremely loose, flowing style, which most resembles so-called “grass script”, or East Asian cursive. (Wikipedia calls grass script a mistranslation but they can get fucked, tbqh; I don’t feel like going into why I don’t think it’s a mistranslation.) In the most extreme forms of grass script, Chinese characters (kanji, kanji literally means “Han characters”) are totally unconcerned with legibility. You genuinely can’t figure it out, even if you’re a highly educated native speaker, if you don’t already know what the writer was going off of.
More ordinary forms of cursive can be legible, if you are better at reading them than me. I am fucking rubbish at it. I’m not even good at reading people’s ordinary handwriting.
Now the second image contains some aspects that are distinctively, undeniably kanji-like, but it’s also possible that, if the intention was that the seals in her hair change from day to day, that some of the scripts are not actually kanji/Japanese at all. In an odd way, that last one actually reminds me a bit of Mongolian and related scripts, such as Manchu, which if you’ve ever been to China, is all over Qing dynasty related historical sites.
Tumblr media
I mean this is just me spitballing, but there’s no reason why, especially if you’re making up your own AU, that Uzushio couldn’t have its own script.
It’s also worth noting that in Japanese linguistic history, these grass style kanji, and then hiragana, which are derived from grass style kanji, were called “women’s hand” 女手, and thus have a strong association with women.
Ancient Japanese society: women are not anywhere near as great as men and there’s no way that women could contribute a huge amount to not only Japanese but world literature
Ancient Japanese women: how bout i do anyway
