(Originally written as a reply here, and sharing it here with you all too because I do passionately recommend these songs 💯)

As a Kpop fan and specifically a Carat, I am very happy to have several exquisite SEVENTEEN songs to recommend as thematic for Beyond Evil:

First of all is what I think encompasses the darker side of love that thematically fits Beyond Evil so well: where your greatest fear is that your love is precisely the very thing that is poisoning the person you love.

"Fear" (독: Fear, 독 meaning poison) is that exquisite song, and I think of Jeongje when I hear the lyrics, but it's also applicable to all of them really, with how dangerous their love can be if not reigned in or tempered by a moral compass (Dongsik, Joowon, Hyeok, Jaeyi, even Nam Sangbae and the Oh siblings) and how love has already become a poison to the people they say they love (Do Haewon, Lee Changjin, and even to a certain extent—Kang Jinmook and Han Kihwan in their own parody of what love is not supposed to be.)

Turn on the captions in the settings for the full lyrics, which are so darkly poetic:

For Han Joowon in particular, I find "Kidult" (어른 아이) as a song very fitting for him, as an adult who is trying to come to terms with his lost childhood, and who is still very much that lost little boy trying to find his place in an adult world.

I do think it's applicable to a lot of them too, all of them who lost the innocence of their youth through tragedies that none of them deserved: Dongsik, Jaeyi, Jeongje, and the Oh siblings too. They're all just trying to recapture that lost youth—their own childhood—in each other.

My favorite lyric:

As people who have needlessly and undeservingly gone through tragedy and loss, I find "Circles" (돌고 돌아) as a song that serves as somewhat a comfort for their little Manyang family too, especially in the end—when they finally found a place they belong to, in each other.

That no matter how far they wander, going in circles in search of the lost pieces of themselves, they will always find their way back to each other.

And this incredibly beautiful song reminds me of the deleted scene from Beyond Evil (which Shin Hakyun had actually shot, as his agency posted the behind the scenes photos) where Dongsik can be seen transplanting a lone flower into a garden, because to him it represents Joowon: because he doesn't want Joowon to be alone anymore, and he wants him to belong to a family—their family.

"Fallin' Flower" (舞い落ちる花びら) begins with a sort of fatalistic point of view of the "flower", in which no one reaches out for the falling petals as they're dying, but now the "flower' realizes that its purpose in life is to fall towards a certain person.

Essentially: that the flower needs to die in order to be born again. That cycle of death and rebirth in order to come to full bloom over and over again.

And isn't that so incredibly symbolic of Joowon and Dongsik themselves—of how their old selves had to die in order for them to be reborn in love, safe in each other's arms.

It's a breathtakingly beautiful song and easily one of all my all time favorites.

Kpop in general and SEVENTEEN in particular have so many beautiful songs that are so underrated and underappreciated, and I really hope you'll all enjoy exploring them ❤️🥹

오전 7시 비행기를 타기 위해 새벽 3시에 집을 나섰다. 차를 끌고 공항으로 가던 중 옛날 생각이 난다. 공항버스 첫차로 어둠을 뚫고 다닐 때. 이렇게 일찍 공항에 가도 사람들이 있을까 걱정하던 시절. 이제는 세계 어느 공항이든 아무 데나 누워 잠만 잘 잔다. 격세지감에 혼자 피식 웃었다. 연인은 이틀 먼저 출국했다. 우리는 서로 다른 일정을 소화한 뒤 첫 번째 결혼기념일에 외국의 한 지하철역에서 만나기로 했다. 너는 너의 삶을, 나는 나의 삶을 산다. 우리는 구속하지 않지만 언제나 함께한다. 여기까지 오는데 정말 많은 시행착오를 거쳤다. 미련과 집착을 버리는 지난한 과정에서 하고 싶은 대로 하라고 했을 때 오히려 그러지 못하는 경우가 많다는 것을 알게 됐다. 책임질 게 많은 어른일수록 그랬다. 붙잡는다고 붙잡을 수 없고 놓아준다고 놓을 수 없는 게 관계다. 우리는 약 일주일 만에 만나 떨어져 있던 동안의 삶을 공유했다. 처음 와본 도시에서 술에 취해 인파 속을 걸었다. 유명하��는 음식을 끼니 상관없이 차례로 사 먹고 상점들을 지났다. 아침이면 공원에서 러닝을 했고 저녁에는 취할 때까지 마셨다. 연인이 술에 취해 잠들면 호텔 밖으로 나와 유명한 길거리 음식들을 포장했다. 빈티지 샵을 다니며 비싼 걸 어떻게든 싸게 사려고 노력했다. 수년간 가지고 싶었던 피규어 앞에선 이성과 감성과 감성이 충돌했다. 여행을 마친 연인은 하루 먼저 귀국했다. 배웅하고 역을 나오는 길에 처음 여행지에 도착했을 때 기분이 다시 들었다. 소중한 사람과도 함께하는 것도 중요하지만 그 전에 혼자서도 잘 지내야 한다는 생각이 들었다. 우리는 본질적으로 혼자인 만큼 삶의 중심을 내 안에 세워야 한다. 이건 사랑과는 별개다. 벌써 몇 번째 함께하는 여행인데도 계속 새로운 감정을 배운다. 우리의 모습이 어떻게 흘러��지 모르겠다. 시간이 흐르고 마음이 무뎌져도 나 자신을 사랑하는 마음으로 끝까지 서로 사랑하자.
