Just stumbled upon this painting depicting Antonie Charles de Liedekercke, his wife Willemina van Braeckel and their son Samuel by Gerard ter Borch

and was struck by the very obvious contrast between the clothes of Samuel and his parents. Both Antonie and Willemina are wearing Dutch style clothing that was en mode essentially some 10-15 years ago while their son is dressed in the newer, French fashion. The cut, as well as the colour palette, is considerably different.
All this makes me think of is the famous ‘the more things change the more they stay the same.’ How we, humans, have always been like this. How kids’ fashion is oftentimes different, new or daring compared to that of their parents.
The (semi) modern equivalent would be something like this

Or even this

geralt: i’m no knight-errant ✋ i’m a professional, i’m a witcher 🤨 knights who save people out of the good of their hearts spoil my business 😠 so i resent them because money is what matters 🥶
also geralt: i wanted to be called geralt roger eric du haute-bellegarde! i left with nothing but the swords on my back and my conviction and faith! 😊 faith that i am needed to save and defend people 😇 when i’m unable to save lives it tears at me horribly and i can’t stop thinking about it 😰 i become friends with knights because we have so much in common 😄 i have principles and a strong moral code i don’t deviate from 🙂↕️ i will protect the innocent forever and ever and ever even after i die i will come back and save them 🥺
#obsessive compulsive heroism.#the knights he became friends with i’m thinking reynart and cahir but you could also say borch because he appeared as a knight#geralt is literally a white knight but online witcher fandom is not ready for that conversation#the elbow-high diaries

E allora elimino, cancello quest'esempio cosí infelice.
Gilles Deleuze, Sulla pittura
