genderswap/rule 63?
F: Hate it. Will immediately make me nope out of a fic. sorry, i literally won't read it. like the first thing i do when seeking out fic for a new ship on ao3 is filter out some tags, and this trope is one of the first to get the axe.
i think this might be a hold over from an era in fandom in the 00s when i would seek out fic for queer ships and stumble across a lot of genderbent fics where it was clear the author was like, "oh these characters are interesting and their dynamic is full of tension, but i can't write something queer!!" like obviously that wasn't all the fic out there, but it happened enough on the forums/sites i was on that i got a distaste for the trope and i've never gotten over it.
📚give me a fanfic trope and i’ll grade it📚
#ask#anonymous#specifically i was a baby queer kid in the HP fandom on like. those BIG super moderated fic forums where things were tightly controlled#like HPFF where i could rarely find slash fic#(HPFF and their messaging boards were full of mods who would routinely go on power trips)#(one time i had a fic that was like. an AU inspired by a book and written in a diary format)#(and the mods fucking banned my fic??? and tried to argue that diary entries don't qualify as fic??)#(and i had to write back and be like. 'here is a list of real life novels that are journal entries. what the FUCK are you talking about.')#(anyway that site was v straight and i eventually found my way to other forums and found all the wonderful queer fics i was longing for)#(also fuck HP but unfortunately that is where my fandom life began and those experiences informed a lot for me)
