Some bored doodles I did while…well, bored, at work. The first one is me trying to draw them from memory, and then the second is with a reference. I wanted to test myself and let’s just say some turned out better than others

#we’re not gonna talk about that whispering death in the first photo#that was my first time ever drawing one and it was from memory#though I’m super happy with my second one ever on the second photo which was done using a reference#I specifically aimed for dragons I’d never drawn before either in order to really test myself#though on that note we won’t talk about the speed stingers#i HAVE drawn them before BUT their heads are hard so I did them again without a reference#also ignore the doodle of one of my managers. he requested it and I had to oblige#httyd red death#speed stingers#Razorwhip#changewing#woolly howl#whispering death#httyd#httyd fanart#a lot of these dragons were my first time drawing them#(except for the speed stinger)#but I’m overall pleased with how most of them came out

Manticore
The Manticore, derived from the Early Middle Persian merthykhuwar or martiora, meaning "man-eater" (also known as a mantichora or a martichore), is a fearsome hybrid creature found in classical and medieval literature. It has the body of a lion, the head of a man and a scorpion tail that can shoot poisonous darts.
The manticore is one of the most bizarre and ferocious creatures depicted throughout classical and medieval bestiaries. Its roots can be traced back to India and Persia (modern-day Iran). The myth of the manticore spreads over several centuries and is mentioned most famously by Ctesias (5th century BCE), Pliny the Elder (23-79 CE) and Pausanias (c. 115 to c. 180 CE).
Appearance & Characteristics
The earliest known mention of the manticore comes from the Greek historian and physician Ctesias in his Indica (written in the 5th century BCE). Although the Indica is now lost to time, fragments of Ctesias' work exist in other authors' writings, and we have a clear description of the manticore. According to Pliny the Elder in his Natural History:
Ctesias writes that amongst these same men there is found an animal called the Mantichora which has three rows of teeth like a comb, the face and ears of a human, and bluish eyes. It is red in colour with the body of a lion and a tail with stingers like a scorpion. Its voice is as if the sounds of the pipe were mixed with a trumpet and it is a creature of great speed which avidly goes after human flesh. (8.75)
Pliny's account of the manticore influenced later writers. He seemed to give the monster a basis in reality as he was considered the expert on strange and marvellous creatures for hundreds of years.
The morphology of the manticore was believed to have developed from its environment – the rugged and barren landscape of the Indian and Middle Eastern deserts. It needed to be fierce and to have weapons at its disposal to be able to catch its prey and prevent being caught by predators. Initially preying on animals like pigs and mountain goats, the manticore began to be lured to villages by the livestock it was hunting and inevitably began to attack and feed on humans, establishing the lore of the man-eating manticore.
The manticore would famously leave no trace of its prey behind. It could attack a human up close with its sharp claws or shoot poisonous darts from its scorpion tail from a safe distance. When it unleashes the poisonous darts from its tail, the tail either bends back or stretches out. Roman writer Aelian (175-235 CE) states that "whatever it hits, it kills, with the exception of elephants" (Characteristics of Animals, 4.21). The poisonous stingers are described as being thick as a rope and one foot (30 cm) in length. Once a stinger has been discharged, another one grows in its place.
Manticores did not just satisfy their appetites by killing one human but would chase after multiple people at a time, taking great pleasure in the hunt. Its favourite way to lure and hunt prey was to hide its body in the long grass, so from a distance, all humans would be able to see would be a human head. Deceived by this, humans would get close to the manticore, and before they knew what was happening, they would be attacked and killed. This showed how cunning and clever the manticore was. Although humans were undoubtedly a manticore's preferred prey, they would also regularly hunt the animal kingdom, except for lions which they could never overpower.
In order to stop the manticores' aggressive nature, the Indians would hunt baby manticores and smash their tails with rocks to prevent them from growing and shooting their poisonous darts and thus taking away their ability to harm humans from a great distance. Manticores lived in burrows deep under the ground where they could hide from their prey and avoid being seen by humans.

ULTIMATE DANNY PHANTOM
DANNY PHANTOM
Yo, Danny Fenton, he was just fourteen, when we did this bit already. Danny is just your average kid, which ironically makes him stand out given the exceptional intelligence and aptitude of his family and closest friends. One day at his parents' laboratory, Danny was exploring inside of a colossal energy siphon (without his parents' knowledge or permission) when he accidentally activated it. He survived, miraculously unharmed. Over the next few weeks, he began experiencing strange phenomena. He knew it was somehow connected to the lab accident, but he was too scared to ask his parents for help and instead confided in Tucker and Sam. Over time, Danny would learn to control the phenomena and channel them into many strange and fantastic powers in order to combat the strange creatures that threatened the safety of his town.
Powers and Abilities
IIF: The first three powers Danny developed were intangibility, invisibility, and flight. With intangibility, he can walk through walls. Using invisibility, he can disappear. With flight, he can fly. At first, Danny struggled to use these abilities for even short amounts of time. As he got stronger and more comfortable with these powers, they came as easy to him as walking or breathing.
Ghost Form: All of Danny's powers are available to him in his human form to some extent. With intense concentration, or under extreme duress, Danny can trigger a transformation sequence into an alternate form. In this ghost form, Danny can use all of his abilities at their full power. If he expends too much energy too quickly he becomes exhausted and reverts to his human form. The Ghost Form was a challenge to master, and at first Danny could only transform under serious emotional duress. Some of his first battles were fought in his human form.
Ectoplasmic Projection: When Danny is losing a ghost argument, he accuses his opponent of having flaws that he himself possesses. Danny's ectoplasmic abilities come with one critical drawback - he must discharge excess energy or it will build up inside him to critical mass and leak out of his body. Sam calls this the bleeding effect. Before Danny knew about this issue, it manifested in power hiccups like turning invisible or intangible at random (and often inopportune) moments. While the excess energy can be burned off by doing things like flying around, staying invisible or intangible for a long time, or just hanging out in his ghost form, Danny would learn to channel this energy into concussive ectoplasmic energy blasts which he could fire out of his hands, feet, eyes, and even his ass in one unusual incident. Danny would develop his own techniques to manipulate his energy blasts for specific functions, like the target-seeking Ghost Stinger, superheated Pyroplasm, high-voltage Electroplasm, and sub-zero Cryoplasm. Many more powers utilizing manipulated ectoplasm would join Danny's impressive arsenal in time.
Superhuman Augmentation: Danny's human form remained the same after his accident. In his ghost form, Danny's strength and durability have been increased tenfold. As Danny grew more powerful, his strength and durability increased at a commensurate rate. He is also super-humanly agile with heightened reflexes, reaction times, and physical speed. As time went on, Danny realized his augmentations weren't just physical. His mental acuity, observational skills, and creative problem solving abilities had also become enhanced.
Regeneration: Among Danny's many, many powers and abilities, none is so valuable (and perhaps none is as taken for granted) as his regenerative healing factor. Danny can take a serious beating thanks to his increased durability, but when that fails, his body can put itself back together almost as quickly as it gets ripped apart. Danny has survived having the his skull caved in, his neck snapped, his guts getting ripped out, and many more horrific injuries that would easily kill a human, including having his head cleaved clean off his shoulders by Aragon's optic blast. Not only does his healing factor repair all of the damage, it also massively increases Danny's pain tolerance. The attacks from his foes still hurt quite a bit, but nowhere near as painfully as they would normally feel. Other ghosts have been known to possess regenerative powers, but none are as efficient as Danny's.
---
Most nights, Danny sleeps the sleep of the dead. But there are times when sleep won't come. On those nights, Danny takes to the skies over his quiet town. The power of flight is among the first of mankind's fantasies, and under normal circumstances, it is an almost spiritual experience. But on those sleepless nights, it makes him feel uneasy. Not because of the impossibility of it all, but because of an inescapable feeling of familiarity. Something whispers to Danny from the darkest corners of his mind at the intersection of the subconscious and imagination. His heart pounds in his chest. He can hardly breathe. Pressure tightens around him like the coiling of an unseen serpent. This is more than just déjà vu. Danny can't explain how he knows it, or why he believes it, but in that moment, he knows that everything his future holds has already unfolded. The unintelligible whisper sharpens; a horrible rasping sound attempting to imitate human speech. Finally, it speaks.
There you are...
Danny jolts awake in his bed, drenched in sweat. He draws ragged breaths and wipes tears from his eyes; he was crying in his sleep. Sobbing, even. He tells himself it was just a nightmare. But a nightmare would have ended when he woke up. The rasping whisper repeats itself. It is quieter now that Danny is awake.
There... you... are...
The voice fades away eventually. The fear lasts longer. Dread grips Danny as he realizes he will someday confront the voice in his mind. And he can't help but shake the feeling that he has done so before...

Miraculous Mutated AU
You all probably recall that post I made a little bit ago about the TMNT crossover AU. Well, here’s the extended lore! @imsparky2002 @booksrbetterthanpeople
It all started on what seemed like a perfectly normal day in Paris. The heroes were all having a group meeting to discuss a new patrol schedule, when they noticed some suspicious, dark-painted trucks speeding through the streets way too fast. Deciding to pursue and check it out, they had no idea their lives were about to be permanently altered.
While they were giving chase, one of the trucks suddenly hit a huge pothole and the doors flew open. And out of them came a huge canister filled with a strange, glowing blue slime…which cracked open and splashed all over the heroes! Unaware what the substance was and what it could do, they had to halt their pursuit while Ladybug summoned a lucky charm to wash away the ooze…but little did they know it was too late…
Twenty minutes later was when it started. They were about to go their separate ways to transform and head home…when the changes began happening. Each of the young heroes was suddenly hit with an agonizing wave of pain as their physical features began to alter themselves. Sharpening, growing, reshaping. When the process finally ended around fifteen minutes later, they all looked at their reflections in a large nearby puddle…and found strange hybrids of human and the animals their Miraculous represented staring back at them.
They could hardly recognize themselves. A large portion of them had suddenly sprouted coarse and thick fur, and most of them had also grown tails, Kim’s, Juleka’s, Adrien’s and Mylene’s being prehensile, and Marc’s feathered. Marinette and Zoe now possessed wings, antenna and extra limbs, with the latter also gaining a sharp stinger protruding from her lower back. Ivan, Nathaniel, Rose and Max now had hooves in place of feet, and the former two along with Kagami had sprouted large horns. A sharp beak had replaced Marc’s mouth and Rose now had a pig snout for a nose. Some of the most alarming changes were Luka’s legs elongating and fusing together into a free-standing snake tail, and the large shell that now took up Nino’s back.
Unbeknownst to them at the time, the strange blue ooze was called Mutagen, and some shady operators in Paris had smuggled a large quantity of it from a company called TCRI in New York. If you recognize the term “mutagen”, you’ve probably realized what’s happened to our heroes.
Knowing that with their altered appearances the reveal would happen anyway, they all detransformed and discussed what they should do about their situation. None of them were eager to go home and face their families, unsure of what the outcome of doing so would be and fearing rejection and fear from their loved ones. They made their way to an old warehouse, where they barred the windows and hid away from the world for several days, only coming out to quickly deal with akumas and avoid the press at all costs.
Naturally, many of their parents grew frightened when their children didn’t come home and put out Missing Persons reports for them. Nothing came of those, of course, which only led to further panic. Finally, after about two weeks, the kids had managed to somewhat come to terms with events and returned home. While their parents were of course shocked by their children’s new appearances, most of them were met with the same unconditional love and understanding they had always received…with a few exceptions. A disgusted Audrey wanted Zoe thrown to the streets, but Chloe fought the bitch tooth and nail over this. (She gave up Queen Bee willingly because she exposed her identity in this AU. No Miracle Queen, no other exposures.) Gabriel pretty much disowned Adrien on the spot, so he’s now living with the Lahiffes. Tomoe (she’s not evil in this AU) has never been good with expressing emotion, but assured her daughter that this change didn’t mean she would stop loving her. (Ivan, Nino, Alya and Marc were especially worried that their younger siblings would be afraid of them now, but these were thankfully unfounded.)
With the kids now home, it wasn’t long before the news began to spread around Paris about the “crazy mutant teens” and people wanted to see for themselves. Many of the parents ended up having to post signs outside their homes and establishments warning that anyone caught harassing or trying to record their kids without permission would have the police called on them. This didn’t deter everyone but it helped.
Naturally, they also had to deal with the government, who wanted to take the kids away for tests and experiments. Their parents only consented to tests that would ensure their conditions weren’t life-threatening, but made it absolutely clear that the suits were NOT taking their children from them. (Anarka in particular threatened to pull the cannons on anyone who tried to take the twins away from her.)
Eventually, the kids returned to DuPont, and were surprised to be met with sympathy and acceptance from all their friends. (Ondine and Cosette also made it clear that they loved their partners as much as ever, even with their new mutant forms.) Of course, there were still people that harassed and bullied them, but they had a strong support system to combat the bad actors.
With their new forms, they also found themselves developing new habits, common with the animals they were now fused with. Nino, Luka and Marinette now found that low temperatures caused them to fall into a deep sleep. Sabrina and Adrien now shed fur like no one’s business and the former was scratching up furniture. He also gained the ability to purr. Kim was climbing all over everything, and Mylene was squeezing herself into tiny spaces. Kagami had developed the tendency to hoard shiny objects, and Marc got up at the crack of dawn every morning to shriek at the sun. Nathaniel’s taste in food took a turn for the…strange, and no one could wave any kind of fabric or material in Ivan’s face without him going ballistic. Zoe now had a fixation on flowers and Max got spooked by a plastic bag going by his head.
Naturally, even with the love and acceptance of the people that cared about them, the young heroes still dealt with a great deal of dysmorphia and self-loathing. Their parents had them start therapy to get used to these changes. Eventually, they even found a community of other mutants online, many of them being from New York, which gave them a whole new support system. Nino even met four really cool dudes, brothers, who were turtles like him!
Eventually, they’re able to love their new selves and go on living their lives. (And if they have some cool new abilities that assist them in fighting Hawkdick, who’s complaining?)
Leave your thoughts in the comments and reblogs! Feel free to add any additional ideas you have!

HTTYD au info!
Ignis edition:
This is for Crow raised by humans au/AU 1
Ignis was born in Caldera Cay (Defenders of the wing island) as an orphan. He had absolutely no information about his parents, only that they set off one day and never returned. Ignis was a very outgoing and energetic kid, always managing to get into trouble. One day he was exploring the untouched part of the island, where it was technically forbidden to go as that’s where the dragons lived. He’d accidentally woken up the speed stingers that lived there and was trying to flee. He ran into a cave that had a series of tunnels, unaware of the Fireworm nest. The speed stingers kept chasing him and eventually he managed to run into the Fireworm Queen. The Queen saw that Ignis was just a “hatchling”, and deemed him to not be a threat, instead scaring off the speed stingers to protect him. The Fireworm Queen decided to claim Ignis as her own, and after a few (very tentative) visits, me managed to be fully accepted into the colony. Uh, due to lore or wtv he doesn’t get burned by Fireworms don’t ask me why, it’s lore ig? I’ll figure something out
When Ignis was 15, he was heading over the the nest when he saw a strange green goo all over the walls, and when he reached the Queen’s firecomb, he found a cavern crasher eating her eggs, the Queen (Veeile) dead along with her entire colony. He tried fighting it off, but it was too late, the crasher had eaten and kill all of them. Except for one. Ignis kept this single egg as safe and warm as he could, and from that egg hatched Princess. That day, Ignis vowed he’d never leave her side, and would do anything to protect her.
That same day he packed his belongings and set out on a ship. He couldn’t stay in Caldera Cay, not with the reminders of his failure. By now, he’d already collected a lot of shed fireworm scales from before the attack, and started to make himself the armor he now wears. This armor is warm to the touch and also protects him from fire attacks.
After a few years of traveling he stumbled upon Evermore Island, where he met Crow. Ignis was 20 at the time, and Crow was 24. They were fast friends, and set out to explore the world. (Crow is not the heir to Evermore Island, he nephew to the chief, so him leaving didn’t really mess anything up). After a while they started dating, but a few months of that and they decided they’d just be better as friends. The breakup was completely mutual, and they’re still best friends to this day, and Ignis is still just as flirty with him as ever.
And there’s Ignis. Yeah I had to get this out so I could close up some little plot holes in my mental view of this version of the AU. RIP Veeile + colony you were a necessary sacrifice for the lore. There is another AU (AU 2) where Veeile and the colony does survive but I’ll write that one out later. By the way, Crow was the one who inspired Ignis to add a glider to his armor, as Crow does have a glider, though he doesn’t use it too much. Eventually Crow will get all the mechanisms working and give him those wings.
Btw, in present time Crow is 32 and Ignis is 28 <3

Dragon Hierarchy
So, the last few weeks I've been pretty sucked in by the HTTYD fandom. I've always been a fan, but this time it's gotten really bad 😅.
And rewatching the movies/shows, reading the many fanfics on ao3 and writing my own stuff for it (that I'm probably never gonna post), made me think of something. How are dragon hierarchies structured?
Since there doesn't seem to be much information canon-wise about it, I've made up my own headcanons. And I'm interested in further discussions.
1. King
Or as we know it, The Alpha. The highest position in the dragons' hierarchy. We know that the Bewilderbeast is the 'The King of Dragons'. According to fandom.wiki, the dragons under his care are called 'Primals'. Every dragon, including Queens, falls under his jurisdiction.
They are described as providers, protectors and, as we know, possess the unique abilty to manipulate other dragons' minds, which is why they naturally become alphas in the hierarchy (keep in mind that this doesn't need to be the case e.g. Toothless). The position can only be earned through challange, but due to the Bewilderbeasts behavior and personality traits, such challanges are not likely to happen. A dragon can only become King/Alpha if they have won the challange against a Bewilderbeast, although they don't get the species-specific abilities.
Furthermore, since Bewilderbeasts are actually described as a rather reclusive type of dragon, they don't take much part in their nest's daily life. Exception to this could include: providing food/shelter and settling disputes. But otherwise, they don't do much.
2. Queen
They rule over a nest of dragons. Like the King, their job is to protect the dragons within their nest, but in comparision to the King their main job is to nurture. Their job is to take care of the nest's inhabitants. I would like to call them 'Life Givers', so you can better picture what I'm trying to get at.
The Queen of a nest is usually the strongest and most nurturing dragon, who has proven that they are able to provide the best (e.g. the Fireworm Queen). They are either appointed or become the Queens by nature. Queens are usually female because of their natural instincs to nurture their nest and take on the role of 'Mother to All', but a male dragon can also become Queen if they have proven themselves (this does not mean that they are a King).
I would like to point out that the Red Death is an exception of this, not the rule. I believe that the Red Death (as a species) has similiar abilities to the Bewilderbeast or the Death Song, but in contrast to the Bewilderbeast, they don't have the ability to manipulate/command other dragons. The Red Death from httyd1, used fear to abuse her abilities and position as Queen to get the dragons within her nest to do her bidding.
3. Nest
Which is ruled either by a King or a Queen, consists of a flock (or many flocks) of dragons. These nests are made up of different dragon species, where either a pack/herd of dragons join or a solitary dragon joins for survival benefits.
Nests may be formed for the benefit of many different species.
4. Herds/Packs
Some dragons are not suited for solitary life, which is why they form packs or herds. It's for survival as well as socialazing.
Packs or herds may appoint a dragon as their leader, but it's not required. Furthermore, they may also decide to join a nest to gain benefits.
5. Solitary Dragons
Some examples to which dragon species form packs or herds.
Herds: Thunderdrums, Smothering Smokebreaths, Terrible Terrors, Gronkles, Razorwhips
Packs: Changewings, Night Terrors, Dramillions, Speed Stingers
As we know - mostly from the shows/series - that some dragons far more enjoy a more solitary kind of life.
However, they may decide to join a nest or form a flock with other dragons. A good example for this is the Monstrous Nightmare or the Hideous Zippleback, which we have seen either lives solitarily or joins other dragons for survival advantages. This depends on how social their species is.

ok alright OFFICIAL masterpost of what i have decided on for. all of the nhw bitb guys and their powers and stuff. shoutout 2 beloved mutual suckinitup for rand and kian's powersets and some of the details on rolan <3
before i explain the bitb guys and their powers i think i need to explain the queen!! i think she triggers in like 1970, and she's just a normal parahuman who gets insanely powerful trump/changer/master powers. she can control people trickster style but that’s a lot harder to do and usually limited to just one or two people. her main power is making bug clones of real people. she makes people nilbog style but they spawn like a parasite directly out of the person they’re trying to mimic. like mitosis!!! except it usually kills the host and turns them into goop <3 the clones retain that person’s memories, they’re like minions that she can control that usually have brute/changer powers, but some can also have trump powers (like becky!!). making clones that are more human and much closer to their real counterparts takes a lot more time, eventually she does get to the point where she can just make clones really fast but theyre sooo buggy and usually have mostly just brute powers and that's when the events of bitb would happen <3 ok here r the boys
rand hero name - conspiracy powerset - thinker: has the ability to ask any yes or no question in his head and get an objectively true answer. his power does not always work--for example, he can't ask about the endbringers and get answers, and if the answer to his question is nuanced, it often just won't give him one trigger event - seeing rachel at the galloway border right after the car crash
kian hero name - widow powerset - changer: he can turn into the goopy version of himself from when he was plastered to the tree!!! it's less liquidy and more sinewy, a bit stronger and tougher than normal human skin, and it almost looks like webbing. he can typically spread this webbing in about a three metre radius, but he can stretch it further if he's panicking and/or in danger. when becky temporarily enhances his powers with her own, he gains the ability to stretch his webbing really far, probably over a city block, and his body changes further, gaining a hollow in his chest with fleshy guitar strings over it, extremely elongated limbs that disappear into just webbing at the ends, and he is unable to speak in this version of his changed form, only sing with very vague syllables trigger event - he didn't trigger like most parahumans!! he bought a cauldron vial to get superpowers and thought he was going to get super speed or strength and got this instead
rolan hero name - tithonus powerset - brute/changer/mover: he's one of the queen's clones and has the ability to turn into a buggy mantis/cicada like form of himself. this typically consists of his legs getting longer and gaining more joints, his left arm morphing into a mantis-like scythe, and his face changing to have mandibles and four eyes. he has enhanced eyesight, strength, and speed. when fully in this form, he often loses the ability to speak, and has a voice box on his hip with prerecorded messages so he can press a button and relay some basic information if he needs to. trigger event - he ALSO doesn't technically have one!!! his bodies in the water moment goes much the same as in canon, and he is one of the queen’s first clones. she put a lot of effort into making him!!! she was very proud of how well he turned out ^_^ such a perfectly good clone who looks acts and thinks exactly like his original!! she’s so proud of him that she doesn’t immediately suck him into the hivemind because she wants to see what he does and watches him go through his life like normal!! he survives at the end because she cuts her connection with him before she dies because he's such a perfect clone and she wants something of hers to survive after she dies <3
becky hero name - stinger powerset - changer/striker/trump: she's also one of the queen's clones!! her changed form is a little similar to rolan's, although she doesn't change nearly as much and prefers to keep it to a minimum with antennae, mandibles, hard chitin on her body, and a couple extra sets of eyes. she can fire a long stinger out of her mouth, getting hit with this stinger would have either infected the target and caused a bug clone of them to form and spawn from their body or turned them into gross fleshy webbing. since the death of the queen, it can no longer do that, but it does hurt like a bitch to get hit with!! her main power is temporarily enhancing other parahumans' powers with a sort of pseudo second trigger. the effects are not permanent and typically last from ten minutes to a couple hours. she can typically only do this to one person at a time trigger event - like rolan, she didn't have a natural trigger!!! she went back to galloway to visit her parents maybe five years before the events of canon and got replaced by a bug clone then. the queen was also very proud of becky and managed to cut her connection with her just before her death to ensure she survived
#new haven wards#im rly normal abt these guys <3#god rand is the only one with a natural trigger here huh.

If a Speed Stinger could speed speedily, softly swooping swiftly, how speedy is he really?
Never has the word “speed” looked so wrong, now.
The Next Big Sting (1x12) is a great episode for Snotlout, actually. Personally, I love it for Speedy and the taming of a species otherwise thought to be untrainable (cough, still waiting for the Changewing, cough cough), but Snotlout is so great here! And with Ruffnut, too? Oh, ho, we were spoiled.
Plus, it’s funny how this episode includes Snotlout trying to get rid of a dragon, but then is preceded by an episode where he’s trying to keep his dragon. Kind of ironic, actually.
Reasons why this episode is great include:
The important stuff (like Meatlug cuteness and Ruffnut & Snotlout centralism):
The first ones shown to give Hiccup “a look” when he presents the Dragon Fly One are Ruffnut and Snotlout. This is obviously foreshadowing.
Hiccup talking about how The Dragon Fly One will be handy if they and their dragons ever get separated. Sorry, Hiccup but I think this mostly only ever affects you. And Ruffnut and Snotlout that one time.
Actually, I don’t think it’s ever actually happened to Fishlegs and Meatlug other than when Scardian’s pack carried Fishlegs off in season two. Look out, Hiccup, looks like you could stand to learn a thing or two.
Additionally, Hiccup says it’s going to be so handy, and yet he’s built the heaviest looking thing imaginable. I know it’s a prototype but like, come on!
Snotlout asks if he could have Toothless after it all doesn’t work. Yeah, like you wouldn’t be in too much shock after the fact, Snotlout. That’s so cousin of you.
Hiccup: “I’ll be floating on a bed of air!” — Snotlout: “Or crashing on a bed of rock.” This man.
“I cannot believe that that hunk of junk actually worked.” It’s okay, Snotlout, neither can Isaac Newton.
Snotlout’s whole character this episode is remembering Frozen from Defenders of Berk. And rightfully so. But the other riders don’t acknowledge it at all until it happens to them (aka Ruffnut).
“Is he seriously going back?!” Snotlout is so real for that. — “Snotlout, meet Hiccup. Of course he’s going back.” Maybe someone should tell Astrid that when she’s grouching over the Dragon Fly One like she did earlier and inevitably will later.
The only one that doesn’t help wrangle the Stinger is Snotlout. And, honestly, who can blame him.
Part of Forbidden Friendship (a harmony with some sopranos) plays when Hiccup tames Speedy. I love the symbolism behind this sound effect because of what a righteous, monumental moment it’s supposed to be.
Ruffnut is fine around the Stinger until she gets stung. And then it’s all downhill from there. I love the natural progression (albeit a quick one) of her character through this episode. At least she and Snotlout can relate to one another now.
Speedy immediately goes for Snotlout because of how on edge he is. He also is able to dodge, punching the air, “Not even on your best day, pal.” He’s so extra here I love it. (Makes you think what his dad said to him after he got stung the first time.)
And of course Ruffnut immediately gets stung again but makes sure to cross her legs.
Tuffnut starts boxing the air, intensely mimicking Snotlout ready to I assume defend Ruffnut from anymore stings before he starts getting kicked. How cute-turned-cruel this is.
Barf gets stung and immediately Ruff calls out to him before crawling her way as quick as she can to I assume comfort him despite the difficulty it takes her. This is so sweet. I wish we had more episodes surrounding Barf & Belch and the twins, and not just the twins or whatever The Zippleback Experience was. (Also symbolism how it was Barf to get stung and not Belch. Barf and Ruffnut are great together <3)
Snotlout gets to basically say “I told you so” but no one listens except for Ruffnut (I assume she also wants to avenge her dragon, which is sweet). I wonder if this went in his book.
Snotlout and Ruffnut’s whole interaction as the sun’s rising is pure serotonin. They are BFFs. (Also both of their episodes together and Snotlout and Tuffnut’s in Maces and Talons Pt. 1 include Ruffnut riding Hookfang. And of course Tuffnut gets a spin in Snotlout’s Angels. Makes you wonder how much Hookfang actually tolerates and/or likes the twins.)
“There are other things I want to say, but none of them are very ladylike!” Between this and the leg crossing you can really tell that Ruffnut was experimenting with gender this episode.
Snotlout immediately grabs Ruffnut after she gets stung and starts falling off and as such takes his attention away from the air-sick and anxious Speedy. He cares so much!
Hookfang then gets stung and they crash land. The fact that he and Snotlout have both been stung is very poetic, much like Ruff and Barf! (Maybe I’m too obsessed with the “Dragon is a reflection of the rider’s soul” analogy.)
Speedy is calm once back on the ground and licks Snotlout as thanks for catching him! See, guys? He was only scared when up in the air, the poor thing.
Hookfang lights on fire to protect Snotlout from the no-longer-hostile Speedy. See? Now he’s cautious! Snotlout and Hookfang are paralleling one another.
“This is a new low even for you, Snotlout!” — “I was trying to save us!” :(
A sign that Speedy doesn’t belong in the pack (and is a teenager, obviously) is that he talks back to Toothless telling him off, whereas the others wouldn’t have done so! I like little bits like this. (And Toothless had Stormfly as back up. Like a mom and dad telling their kid off.)
Ruffnut and Hookfang have a semi-paralysed affiliation together now, both going around in a circle. And I love how they’re going it side by side, I wonder if they did it to support the other. At least Meatlug is here to defend them!
Ruffnut saying to Meatlug, “Hey, girl, thanks,” and fist-bumping her tail is really cute. Hookfang also gives an additional sound.
Speedy also realises that his old pack is hurting his new pack! Nurse/Big Sister/Favourite Aunt Meatlug getting hurt was the final straw for him.
Snotlout starts swinging with a stick and says he’s not leaving anyone behind (start of his heroism/selfless arc) but it’s obvious he’s still scared himself. Hiccup’s sass was not necessary! The nerve.
Snotlout using Speedy as his own Stinger feels like a thousand IQ move and I love him for it.
“Needle Butts” feels like the millennial term for Speed Stingers and we have Snotlout to thank for it. Alternative terms were probably “Deadly Dodos” and “Sneaky Sewing Machines”.
“Snotlout, Snotlout, oi oi oi!”
Snotlout accepting Speedy after he turns on his own to protect him.
“I’m never going to get you, dragon” Snotlout: confirmer of species’ and genuses everywhere! Also, why isn’t this dragon a dinosaur, again?
“But he hates me!” Snotlout’s delivery of this is great.
Kind of criminal that Speedy couldn’t have become Part Of The Gang™. It’s okay, Speedy, you’ll always be in our hearts. (Doesn’t this kind of make Speedy Snotlout’s Scauldy? I guess?) (Shame, too. I alway imagined he would have gotten along great with Smidvarg.)
I realised when Tuffnut lights a streak of gas on fire to ward off some Stingers and then he compliments a still-paralysed Barf that Barf looks kind of drunk. Now that you’ve noticed that, too, I order you all to laugh.
Oh, and then goes Belch.
And I think Tuffnut. See what I said about one not being able to go down without the other soon following? This. Is. Symbolic. (Or so I religiously believe.)
Hookfang is still seen as formidable by the Titan Wing Speed Stinger even with half his body still paralysed. I wonder if this could temporarily be seen as disabled rep — I wish we could have seen his development from being completely defenceless (Meatlug protecting him and Ruffnut) to him doing this.
It was probably to defend Snotlout.
And that’s great.
The Meatlug Cuteness Counter:
Fishlegs reminding Hiccup that their dragons can fly and Meatlug being cute about it. (Meatlug Cuteness Counter: 1.) (She’s the cutest.)
I love how Fishlegs tries hiding his arm’s paralysis by leaning on Meatlug only to get sabotaged when she goes to play with Speedy. (Meatlug Cuteness Counter: +1 point. 2.)
Nurse Meatlug encouraging Speedy through his physiotherapy is adorable. (Meatlug Cuteness Counter: +5 points. 7.)
When Snotlout is about to go off, we can see Meatlug and Fishlegs sleeping next to one another. (Meatlug Cuteness Counter: +4 points. 11.)
“Nurse Meatlug, if you would do the honours, please” and she does! She does do the honours! Oh, she’s such a good girl. (Meatlug Cuteness Counter: +10 points. 21.)
“Meatlug, quick! Stop him! Speed Stingers can’t swim!” And then she goes so determinedly. So cute. (Meatlug Cuteness Counter: +100 points! 121.)
Meatlug’s shocked face when she sees Speedy being able to skim the water. (Meatlug Cuteness Counter: +20 points. 141.)
Meatlug defends the defenceless (Ruffnut and Hookfang), only to immediately get stung. She tried! (Meatlug Cuteness Counter: +59 points. 200. Additionally, Meatlug Heroism Counter: 10 added points.)
It also takes us back to that scene in Frozen where she defended Fishlegs and so he couldn’t leave her. (Nostalgia Counter: 1. Meatlug Cuteness Counter: +30 points. 230. Additionally, Meatlug Heroism Counter: +15 added points. 25.)
Fishlegs stands by Meatlug after she gets frozen. (Fishlug/Meatlug Cuteness Counter: 10.)
Bonus (mostly non-Snotlout and Meatlug related things):
First thing Tuffnut thinks about is food and/or destruction in the morning.
Chicken was also woken up early to see all this. She is the best dragon rider.
“The chicken is not amused.” (She then leaves dramatically.)
Surely it would be more efficient in situations like this to employ either Stormfly or Hookfang to go after Hiccup instead of the one dragon that can’t fucking fly. Surely allowing the latter is just counter-intuitive.
Astrid goes “Ugh, boys” and Tuffnut is shown right next to her with this simple frown on his face as his eyes flick back to Hiccup! I don’t know why that’s so funny but it is. Shame how quick it was shown though.
“Okay, everyone. Dragon Fly One: maiden flight.” Foreshadowing. I think.
“You’re not actually thinking of trying to train it, are you?” Oh, Astrid. This is extremely ironic for when you coerce Hiccup into letting you bring Garff along on a rescue mission.
In conclusion: Meatlug is cute, Snotlout is great, Barfruff supremacy, Hiccup sabotaged having a pet Speed Stinger on the Edge, and Chicken is the supreme leader.

Draconic Sociality
Many species of dragon are social. However, there are different levels of sociality, and dragons, like most animals, fall into various categories.
Level 0 - Solitary
Several species, such as Skrills and Armorwings, are highly territorial and do not tolerate the presence of other dragons. They likely only tolerate the presence of their own kind, as adults, if there is an opportunity to mate.
Level 1 - Gregarious
Many species, including Nadders, Gronckles and Terrors, are gregarious. They congregate, either naturally or under certain conditions, for the sake of protection, company, easier access to mates etc. These groups are referred to as flocks. There are single-species flocks, such as those of Smokebreaths, and there are multi-species flocks. Within flocks, a loose hierarchy often forms.
Typically this is a case of Might makes Right. The bigger, stronger and more aggressive dragons tend to dominate over the smaller, weaker and less aggressive ones. Therefore, it follows logically that the biggest dragon in a flock, especially if they have no competition from their own kind, will become the ‘leader’ of the flock (also known as a Queen, King, alpha, defender etc.)
However, dragons do not behave solely based on instinct. They can and will recognise other qualities as being worthy of high status. (For example, Toothless is the de facto leader of the Berk flock not because he’s the biggest dragon, but because he killed the Red Death.) Dragons will naturally have friends and rivals within the larger social network of the flock.
Level 2 - Hierarchical
Several species, such as Changewings or Speed Stingers, live in single-species packs. A pack is distinguished from a flock by the more rigid social hierarchy and distinct pecking order they develop. The kind of hierarchy varies between species. For instance, Changewings have a social hierarchy similar to that of spotted hyenas, where females are dominant over males.
‘Pack’ used to refer to single-species groups and ‘flock’ to multi-species groups. However, further research into the social dynamics of dragons has revealed that a more accurate distinction would be that packs have a pecking order, whereas flocks are more generalised. The norm is to have multi-species flocks and single-species packs, but of course there are always exceptions.
Level 3 - Eusocial
Firewyrms (and possibly Prickleboggles) are unusual amongst dragons as they are eusocial. Eusociality is characterised by the following: Reproductive division of labor (with or without sterile castes), overlapping generations, and cooperative care of young. It is considered the highest form of sociality.
The Firewyrm Queen is the sole reproductive female within a colony. She reproduces parthenogenically, laying hundreds of unfertilised eggs that develop into non-reproductive drones. Genetically speaking, these are male, though functionally speaking they are sexless. The workers care for future generations, defend the colony and scout out new territory or food sources.
When a colony starts to get too large, the resident Queen will produce a special type of fire-comb gel called drottninghunang (lit: ‘queen honey’) that is laced with hormones. This gel is fed to one of the hatchling drones, though the mechanism behind which this individual is chosen is not yet understood.
The drottninghunang basically triggers their transformation into another reproductively-capable female, known as a Firewyrm Princess. When this female is large enough to fend for herself (and before she gets large enough to be a potential rival to her mother), she will leave the colony to start her own.

MerMay 2024 Day Eight Deep Below
As Jameson left the river and headed into the sea, he felt the water shift from fresh to salt. It was a gradual change, but one he was always fully aware of. The ocean water always felt somehow heavier than the river water. Colder. Slower. And as he swam deeper and deeper, it got even colder. He pulled a power stone out of his bag and took the magic from it, weaving it around him in a spell to keep himself warm.
Though he didn’t agree with Marvin’s dislike of the deep ocean’s openness, that didn’t mean he liked the depths, either. He was used to waters where he could see without needing a light, where he didn’t feel like his gills were working hard to get oxygen from the water. But they needed more fallen stars, and those only grew deep down these days. Marvin could have gone, but he’d had plans to make more power stones today, so when Jameson noticed that they were running out he decided to just go get them himself. He let Marvin know where he was going, then headed out.
The warmth spell around him meant that he was constantly giving off a faint blue glow. Jameson swam downwards through inky black waters, staying close to the ocean floor as it sloped. Slowly, at first, and then there was a sudden drop and the angle of the incline increased sharply. Jameson continued to follow it, swimming around twisted rock formations.
Strange... surely he should have found some fallen stars by now. But he didn’t see anything. Except for... faint motions... in the shadows surrounding him. He heard the sound of sand shifting and rock scraping, and tried to speed up. He had to find something soon, he had to, he had to—
There! Finally. Fallen stars. Glowing plants with five strands on top of a long stalk, resembling the shape of stars. Jameson darted forward, reaching for them—
Something slashed at him from the darkness.
Jameson quickly darted back again, eyes wide with fear. What was that?! Some sort of claw? Was it a crab? A big crab?
He could hear something clacking around. Was it getting closer?! No no no—he had to get to the fallen stars! Jameson looked around, weaving around a rock formation and getting to the cluster of fallen stars from the other side. He grabbed onto one, pulling it free—
And something else slashed at him again.
Jameson dodged to the side, feeling something scrape his wing but luckily not breaking the skin. It continued to move in the darkness, heading towards him. No no no no! What could he do?! If this was a crab, his stinger couldn’t go through its armor. He had to keep trying to outmaneuver it. He backed up again and circled around once more, grabbing a couple more fallen stars before this crab thing tried to attack him again. And this time, when he backed up, it kept pursuing him, making more of those clacking sounds. Jameson continued to swim away, but he could hear it getting closer—and closer—and closer—
“Anchors below!” A voice shouted.
Something darted down from above, slamming against the crab thing from behind. Jameson glanced over his shoulder. He knew that voice.
“Back! Back! Back!” Jackie shouted, flailing wildly. He darted down to the ground, swiping his tail across the ocean floor. There was a heavy thump as something big fell over, and Jackie turned back around. “Jameson?! What the hell are you doing out here, freshie?! Get out of here!”
Jameson nodded. He swam up into the water, over Jackie and the crab thing, swiping up as many of the fallen stars as he could while the crab was temporarily occupied. Key word being ‘temporarily.’ He soon heard Jackie shout again and spun back around to look at him.
“I said get out of here!” Jackie shouted, dashing forward towards him. He grabbed Jameson’s arm and pulled him upwards. The claws of the creature snapped, reaching for them but missing. The two merms swam up, up, up, until the rock formations of the ocean floor had disappeared and the two of them were floating in dark waters. “Jameson! Seriously, what’re you doing here?!” Jackie asked.
We were out of fallen stars so I went to get some more, Jameson explained quickly.
Jackie sighed. “And... you made yourself glow because...?”
Jameson looked down at himself. This spell keeps me warm. The glow is a side effect.
“It’s not that cold down here,” Jackie muttered. “You and Marvin should, uh... probably try to avoid this area from now on. There has to be fallen stars somewhere else. This area’s being protected by some large, possessive crabs. They must’ve taken a liking to how they glow.”
Jameson raised an eyebrow. How do you know that?
“I, uh...” Jackie glanced away. “One time, Marvin came down here looking for fallen stars as well. Almost got attacked by a shark. I’ve, uh... taken to... stopping by occasionally. Just in case there are more sharks. And just in case Marvin runs into them.”
Oh. I see. Jameson grinned. You’ve been watching out for him, then?
“I’d have been watching out for you, too, if I thought you’d be down here,” Jackie added.
Why wouldn’t I be here? I’m a mage, too!
“I know, but I’ve only ever seen Marvin out gathering fallen stars,” Jackie explained.
Jameson nodded slowly. Yes, I suppose those need slightly more experience to find and collect. Speaking of which, Jameson checked his bag. There weren’t as many fallen stars as he would’ve liked, but he’d managed to grab a fair amount. I should head back. If I need more, I’ll try to find another place.
“Good idea,” Jackie said. “Want me to swim with you? For, uh... safety?”
Yes, let’s swim back together, Jameson said. But not just for safety. I feel it’s been a while since we talked. What have you been up to?
“Hmm, not much, nothing really exciting,” Jackie said, continuing to swim upwards. “There have been some more TridentCorp sightings. But let’s not just swim straight into bad news. What about you?”
As they swam, chatting about their lives, the darkness in the water faded.

…
“Nope!” Dart suddenly shouted upon realizing everyone had very shocked expressions. Their mind and the Omnitrix already jumped to the obvious conclusion—everyone had overheard. How much exactly? No freaking clue! So, Dart did the one thing to get of an awkward convo…
They transformed.
In a green flash, the transforming teen thought for a moment that they had become Velocity (Speed Stinger) again. The literal balls of the feet were wrong though they were pretty sure they were raptor-like judging by general body.
‘Close Kineceleran.’
‘Oh? Oh!’
From an outside perspective, the Toys and Rich saw a green flash then empty air making most assume Dart pulled their teleporting trick… Except something ran straight into some crates actually inside the loading bay clueing them in on the fact the human had become fast.
———————————
Speed Stingers could move a touch faster than the human eye can blink, but Kinecelerans?
Much much faster.
So fast—in fact—Dart was having a really tough time avoiding bumping into things. It was like first becoming Cannonbolt all over again… their experience as a similar powered species didn’t directly translate over. XLR8’s feet were like walking around on one-wheeled roller-skates on ice. “How on Earth did he get used to this so fast as a ten-year-old?” Dart complained in a much raspier, slightly echoey voice than usual.
Having decided on making something useful of their getaway, the Omnitrix user had been going through rooms as the Kineceleran. Their new found superspeed was helping clear spaces much faster. But, the lack of experience kept sandbagging the progress they did make.
XLR8’s claws were pretty decent at marking what ways they had already been. Don’t mind the blur of a raptor speedster slightly tripping!
———————————
“Hell of a way to make an exit...” The former employee muttered underneath his breath, cracking open a beer after all this madness. Rich was one of the few calm ones in a whirlwind of shock and confusion amongst the toys. The only ones not freaking out were the purple emaciated cat, half a dog, and the first toy Dart befriend Huggy. That last one currently has his head on his hands shaking it slowly.
“What in the world are they?!” Longlegs.
“Human? Freaks like us?” Doey.
“Perhaps they’re shy?” Miss Delight.
“…Someone who wanted to help and did.” Poppy.
Various sounds from those unable to speak.
Catnap (Theo? Who was he now?) watched this all with disbelieving eyes, a pop tart next to him. “…This feels like a cruel nightmare.” He rasped out, curling his body up around itself.
“Can confirm. It isn’t a nightmare for the rest of us.” DogDay commented sarcastically.
The purple cat narrowed his eyes. “I did not mean it was nightmare He was dead. I meant it feels like a deceptive dream that we all are having over being saved. It’ll turn to a nightmare when we wake up…” And wasn’t he someone far too familiar with nightmares.
Huggy hissed out in disapproval, though the Bigger Body Smiling Critter barely understood what he was attempting to articulate.
“Big blue’s right… I think? That kid might be impossible, but they don’t do anything half-assed. All of you got out.” The old human spoke up in the blue-furred mascot’s stead.
—ROB’d Anon.
Dart wanted to badly to not have this conversation they unlocked XLR8. Meanwhile, most of the toys are freaking out a bit.
LOL I can assume that it's the Omnitrix who has Dart go back. Or explain it themselves as we know how introverted they are.

Stoick yells "Out of my way, I'm a chief."
Yeah, that's the same in DWA. Stoick yells it at dragons in RTTE, it's kinda funny.
Sir, the dragons don't care. Except maybe that Alpha Speed Stinger.

These fiendish scorpions were shaped by Arbeyach, and remain loyal to their creator even after his fall from power. They have no deeper inner desires or personality, just drone-like subservience as defenders of the Hive and hunters to bring down any external threat. They can also be used as mounts by smaller devils, though they are not careful with their riders and will only do so when properly instructed by a higher ranked devil. With four arms (two with scythe blades for claws and two smaller ones with fingers), and three whipping stingers, they can fend off assaults even when greatly outnumbered, shredding through foes. Their weaker hands can catch and grasp enemies, adding to their barrage of attacks, but far more dangerous is their poison. When injected, it begins breaking down the body, organs swelling, muscles and bones breaking down, and causing a horrific transformation. If the creature dies, its internal tissues reform and absorb its soul, ripping open the skin and a newly created lemure crawls out. These newly created lemures are rounded up by Arbeyach's followers, added to the hive and over time reshaped into further drones to be useful to the Prince of Swarms.
