November 30th 2024 i teased an animatic and then gave zero news about it. Guess what!

whenever I see someone make Tim be really mean to Toby it makes me sad :(

I do not think Tim would hate him at all. Maybe he’d be annoyed by his presence when he first starts to tag along, but it’s just because he’s such a contrasting force. Tim’s used to Brian. They’ve been friends for a long time, they’re similar in age, they’ve gone through a lot together, and they know how to act around one another. Toby just comes in like a freight train. This loud, almost grating presence that demands attention even if he’s not asking for it.

Toby’s immature, petty, overly excitable, messy, and doesn’t think through his actions well. Of course that rubs Tim the wrong way at first. Maybe he snaps at him once or twice. Probably just gives him the silent treatment for a good long while, but hate him? No. On the inside he’s sad for him. Even before he learns about his trauma. Because he’s just so young. He’s young, has so much spirit, and yet he’s here. Dragged through life to become a slave to slender just like the rest of them.

He can barely even look at him when they first meet because it makes his stomach turn. He can barely grow a beard. He’s still hollowing out his baby fat, for fuck’s sake - and he’s here? It’s sickening to think of how much potential and promise got thrown down the drain.

Toby doesn’t open up to him quickly. I’ve said this in older posts but he’s just really not good around older men. It brings up too many flashbacks of his father.

But, eventually he will. Probably not by choice. He wakes up from a terror in the middle of the night screaming with tears streaming down his face. Tim runs in because he thought something genuinely terrible happened - and it did, just a long time ago.

After that, they just kind of stick. Tim gets Toby into smoking, they sit on the porch of the shared cabin together and share a pack of cigs. Tim will tell him stories of how he lived before all of this happened, Toby will listen but stay silent because he’s got no good memories to tell.

Toby will ask Tim about college. What it was like. If it was like the movies. It just makes that pit of dread in Tim’s stomach grow deeper, knowing that he was swiped before he could even attempt to experience it.

Tim constantly harps on him to be careful. Keeps him in his line of sight at all times when they’re on a mission because he knows Toby’s reckless. He knows he pushes himself too hard because he thinks his inability to feel pain makes him near invincible. He’s usually the one to carry Toby home slung over his back.

Tim cares in a gruff, closed off way.

“How bad is it?”

“D-Does it matter? Can’t f-feel it anyway.”

“Oh, fuck off. Show me. You’d have bled out five times over if I didn’t always harp on you.”

It’s always worse than Toby says it is. And it always makes Tim’s head hurt to think about just how detached from his own body Toby seems to be.

Nah, I think it's messed up and pointless to just be outright mean. I understand the feeling that it's childish and naive - I'm still working through that myself, which is what prompted me to add to this (also if I'm ruining a playful post, my bad /genuine).

I just want to dissolve the notion that it's somehow illogical to expect people to demonstrate a certain level of respect and kindness to one another, or that being outright mean or inconsiderate should be not just tolerated but anticipated.

Like, no. I think the expectation for general social engagement should be to acknowledge that we're all human beings living and existing together and that it's the most logical thing to cooperate so we can build a world where all of us can comfortably coexist.

With the obvious space left to have constructive conflict that results in exploring and understanding that the middle ground of our experiences is the bridge we build to a better world together instead of making everything into a violent competition where someone "has to win" and the other person just has to suck it up. Because that hasn't been working, and quite frankly, I think that approach is childish and unnecessarily limiting with long-term consequences for the "winners", the "losers", and everyone in between.

Thinking about those fics where Phoenix and Miles play poker together and they almost tie because it's actually supposed to be a metaphor for them having similar intellectual capacities and that, even after everything, they are each others foils and they can always work together to bring out the truth

And then remembering Miles has the WEAKEST facial control known to man. His ass would lose so hard in a game where you have to not glare at your cards for cursing you or smile smugly because you got a great hand.

Story time! This happened today :)

So I'm learning to drive, right. I'm in the driving school's car with an instructor I've never met before and will never see again. I'm already more stressed than usual, list of reasons why:

Up until this point driver instructor (who I will henceforth call alex) has been very clear on where to turn, giving me directions with quite a bit of heads up. I begin to roll through the intersection, whose lights had just turned green, and alex goes "btw your turn signal should be on, we're making a left turn." So I turn it on and disgruntedly but politely go "you never said left turn :/" and alex goes "yeah my bad"

Anyway I'm halfway through turning when I realize it's a one way street, and I can't remember if I said this or if alex realized at the same time, but I very clearly remember the lady turning out of a gated parking lot honking at me and making angry faces. I give some form of wave and incredibly stressed face and pull up along the curb, she makes it out and disappears, and alex begins to tell me to pull into the parking lot she just pulled out of so we can turn around, but I look at that cuz there's a fence and I quietly go "the gate is closing" and alex tells me to pull in again so I say again louder "the gate is closing" and alex goes "oh, the gate is closing". :I. Anyway I did a two point turn out of there like a boss then held back crying for about. Longer than three minutes but less than 9. Crying has been a common theme among my previous mistakes during driving so I've officially assigned that my stress response. Don't like the stress response OR driving, frankly.

i do enjoy "living weapon" characters but specifically living weapons who did in fact do absolutely horrific things which at least a part of them enjoyed and thought was good and right at the time, and that no amount of not knowing any better or guilt they feel in hindsight will ever make up for. i love living weapons who are "irredeemable", and no it's not their fault that they were made that way or pointed in the directions they were by the hand that wielded them, and yes they are victims, but so were their victims. living weapons who some people will never be able to forgive, but who still wake up every day and try to do better than what's expected of them. a sword that uses its blade to cut wheat to make bread for the people who once lived in fear of its arc falling on their heads.
