WARP CORE DEEP DIVE!

Where it all began. So much so, that they never quite nailed down what anything in engineering was. We know the thing in the middle was a "matter/antimatter integrator" and it had a dilithium crystal in it. But it didn't appear until later on, the floor was originally empty. There were also large transformer-ish things that moved about as the plot demanded. The big thing behind the mesh? That's the pipe cathedral. Maybe it was an impulse engine (as per the old Star Trek Blueprints by Franz Joseph) or perhaps it was part of the warp drive. Originally the idea was that the warp nacelles generated their own power. But that would change soon...

The Animated Series gave us something very similar to the TOS engine room, with the pipe cathedral and one BIG transformer, but instead of the matter/antimatter integrator we got a glass tube with what looked like measurements on it. Maybe it's a proto-warp core a la TMP, especially since it's in a similar spot to Strange New Worlds'. Or maybe it's a coolant pipe like the 2009 movie. Who knows? We also saw inside the "antimatter nacelle" in one episode, which is generally assumed to mean inside one of the warp engines themselves but it's all a bit vague.

The Motion Picture gave us the original Big Blue Lava Lamp, the physical set was 3 stories high but augmented with forced-perspective, in the form of a painting at the bottom of the shaft and a truncated horizontal intermix chamber crewed by children at the end of the main level. The engineering crew on the main deck now wear radiation suits, adding to the idea this big blue thing isn't your friend.
This was also the Big Retcon, making the intermix chamber the power source for the warp nacelles. Every Trek regardless of era would follow this route.

In Wrath of Khan, they'd add a very important side room with dilithium crystals in for Spock to self-sacrifice in. I always found it very amusing this room, where the most important part of the engineering machinery was, was in no way physically connected to the intermix chamber. Nor did it exist in the previous movie.

The Next Generation gave us a pot-bellied stove, with neon segments glowing one-by-one up and down to give the impression of pulses of energy colliding in the middle then being fed to the nacelles. No more radiation suits needed, and the room has a nice carpet. This was also the first time "warp core" was used, a phrase that would retroactively be applied to all the prior ones.
The Enterprise-E and DS9's Defiant would have bigger and smaller warp cores that were variations on the same theme as TNG.

Voyager brought back the classic Motion Picture big blue lava lamp, just without the horizontal tube this time. It does the nifty swirly thing too. Q Junior makes it do club lighting one time.

NX-01 Enterprise is just kind of this big industrial tank with some glowy bits. It's weird that in the classic movies they needed radiation suits to work in engineering, but in the series set 100 years earlier they didn't.

The 2009 reboot filmed engineering in a thinly disguised Budweiser brewery, which made the area look enourmous and extremely complex, but lost all the high tech clean room vibes prior shows had. What in real life were giant brewing tanks housed the intermix chambers which made up the warp core, which were ejected through a hatch in the roof at the end. This look was extremely controversial with some, but personally I loved it.

In Into Darkness the warp core looks like an almighty piece of kit, and that's because they shot on location at the Lawrence Livermore National Ignition Facility. It's a real-life fusion reactor. And then you can climb inside it and it turns out that inside is one very important laser thing, some dilithium crystals you barely see and lots of deadly radiation. At least the self sacrificing happens inside the core itself and not a weird separate side chamber this time. The brewery from the last movie was still there, implying this was all along even if we didn't visit it. But that complicates things because the bits they called the warp core are very different. Perhaps the intermix chambers ejected last movie and core seen here are all part of the same huge warp core system.

Strange New Worlds reboots the original... sort of. They put a vertical intermix chamber in there and instead of a mesh and forced perspective they've got an AR wall with an enourmous array of high tech pipes. But weirdly, the writers guide says the big AR wall with the updated pipe cathedral is the deflector dish machinery not the warp core. I guess the confusion makes it more authentic TOS.

My head canon is that the NX-2000's "trans warp" experiment wasn't 100% effective but did greatly increase warp speeds to the point where Starfleet redid the warp scale, which is why it's different in TNG and later. And the Excelsior in Undiscovered Country was literally pushing the bounds of the new scale to get to the Khitomer Accords site.

Yes, please infodump! I always enjoy reading your thinking behind your fics.
Limiting myself to four, but more than happy to drop another ask later if you're up for it!
1 - Not everyone can be the main character!
13 - drowning in affection
14 - loophole
22 - go in service
okay okay okay an infodump to tire myself out once and for all before i collapse into bed (it's about midnight where i am and i FINALLY finished the very first part of my lady of mercy. i'm going to clean it up tomorrow and finally post it and i am very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very excited.
SO! i'm gonna briefly chat about the general vibe of each thing and give an excerpt if there's one that i particularly like. what i'm saying is you're going to be eating very very well.
Not everyone can be the main character!
What's the vibe: A slice-of-life chronicle of life going on on the NX-01, outside of what the Main Seven do. There's laughs. There's gaffs. There's character development for characters you have literally never heard of. It's a little bit of an OC fic without 100% being an OC fic.
Who does it feature: A metric fuckton of side characters. You've got the usual suspects (e.g., Rostov, Kelly, Hess, Cutler), for sure. But you also have some people who had literal seconds of screentime (e.g., Zabel, Fletcher, Tanner, Jane Taylor). You've got people who straight up only appeared in the novels (Ravi Chandra, Mireya Meir, Donna O'Neill) (characterization may vary). You're got straight up OCs (e.g., both of Malcolm's seconds-in-command (because I 100% refuse to believe that one member of personnel would have been seated with all of his administrative shit)). As I say, there's laughs, there's gaffs, there's chaos, there's character development.
When can we expect to see it in full: Not for a good long while. All told, this work is probably my white whale, and it will probably be simultaneously the richest yet most piecemeal thing I create for a good long while.
An excerpt:
April 13th, 2151. 1600 hours. “Lieutenant senior-grade Annika Hess, reporting for duty.” “Commander Trip Tucker—Trip’s just fine. You must be mah new second. You just get promoted?” “Ah—yes, sir.” Shit. What did I say? “You don’t have to say ‘senior-grade’.” “Oh. Right.” I can already feel my face going red. Commander Tucker laughs lightly, and I feel like dying. “This must be yer first time in command, too, huh?” “Ah… yes, sir.” How humiliating. Trip smiles and puts a hand on my shoulder. “Well, you’re here on time and ya seem to have yer wits about ya. I’m sure you’ll be fine.” I allow myself an uneasy chuckle. “I appreciate that, sir.” “Ah mean it. Ah’ve heard nothin’ but good things from yer past COs. Couldn’t ask for a more qualified second.” Americans and their flattery. I swallow thickly, trying to get myself to say something. Anything, so long as I don’t further embarrass myself.
drowning in affection
What's the vibe: The thing that was supposed to be my submission for Drown Malcolm Reed Month. Basically Malcolm is touch starved as fuck, so Trip and Hoshi offer him a cuddle sesh. He refuses for months, until a bad day hits (complete with edible arrangement in the form of a migraine) and he's left with few other options than to accept the affection or wallow in misery.
Who does it feature: Malcolm, Trip, and Hoshi. I wanted to experiment with the idea of them as a threesome, but not necessarily as a romantic or sexual one.
When can we expect to see it in full: Not for a while, albeit not as long of a while as the slice of life thing. IMO, this is kind of rushed and piecemeal, much more so than I'd like. Just because it's the G-rated equivalent of PWP, that doesn't mean I want it to be completely contrived. Ultimately, I want to flesh it out significantly so that things make sense.
An excerpt:
Before he thinks better of it, he’s commed Trip to let him know to expect him. It feels like he’s doing something wrong, somehow. Like he’s heading off to be taken apart and debauched, as though Trip and Hoshi think the solution to his migraine is to fuck his brains out. But he knows them well enough; that was never the offer being made. This was never a sex thing, nor was it even an offer of a romantic relationship. Still, protests that small, defensive, ever-insecure part of his soul. The stern, sardonic, stiff-lipped Chief of Security, off to be cuddled? Suddenly, he’s ringing Trip’s doorchime. The door opens, and things start to happen relatively quickly. Trip offers his hand. Malcolm lets himself be pulled into the dark room. He’s sat down on the comforter of Trip’s bunk. Hoshi’s not far behind him, come to help along the plan she’d hatched. She crawls onto the bed, behind him. Her body nears his, and he shivers as he feels her nails lightly trail over his shoulders. She settles in, resting her head right between his shoulder blades, drawing a contented hum from both of them. Then, the piece de resistance: Scritch, scritch, scritch. Malcolm mushes his face into Trip’s shoulder, feeling his spine turn to jelly as the engineer's blunt nails gently scratch at the base of his skull. “Aww…” Trip can’t help himself, his baritone drawl at full strength. “Does that feel good?” “Fuck off.” At least, that’s what Malcolm wants to say. What comes out instead is a low, disgruntled whine, which only makes Trip pull him closer and Hoshi coo with adoration. That’s a new one: adoration. People have been attracted to him, that’s true enough. He knows what that’s like— to be wanted, desired —but this is different. Trip and Hoshi don’t just want him. They like him. They want to take care of him. That’s new. And oh, it feels good. Trip’s hands move, his thumbs sometimes coming back to rub firm little circles behind his ears. If either he or Hoshi say anything in the next minute, it’s lost to warm, sleepy oblivion.
loophole
What's the vibe: Hoshi's having nightmares and the NX-01 rumor mill is a well-oiled machine, so she finds out about T'Pol's neuropressure "services" (such as they are) and decides to see if she can't be helped.
Who does it feature: T'Pol and Hoshi. The original intention wasn't to have it be explicitly shippy, but the work is so early in the process that there's still some room for me to change my mind.
An excerpt:
As it was, Hoshi stood nervously outside of her quarters. She’d been trying to muster the courage to ring the door chime for the last hour and struggling to sleep for the last three. Falling and staying asleep had started getting harder a week ago, and things had been steadily getting worse since then. Last night, she’d only gotten three hours of sleep. She couldn’t keep on like this. Despite her anxiety, Hoshi yawned. What time was it, 0130? Was the Sub-commander even awake? Oh, to hell with it. Hoshi rang the doorchime. “Come in,” said a low, feminine voice. There was no hesitation behind it. Hoshi took a steadying breath. She could do this. She opened the door and timidly stepped into T’Pol’s quarters. A faint smell—incense?—hit her nose, and she immediately felt a little calmer. T’Pol looked up from where she’d been meditating, her expression neutral as ever. “Ensign. What can I do for you?” “Hi. Um…” Hoshi sighed, already feeling her cheeks going warm. “Look. I heard through the grapevine that you’ve been doing neuropressure to help with sleep issues. I’ve been dealing with similar things, and I thought about trying to do it myself, but I’ve also heard that you can get really hurt if you do it wrong. If you’re not comfortable doing it, that’s fine, I just wanted to—” “Ensign,” T’Pol said calmly, cutting Hoshi off. The younger woman snapped her mouth shut. “I…” Hoshi was stunned. The Sub-Commander, at a loss for words? She was so screwed. “Normally,” she said, snapping Hoshi out of her reverie. “Neuropressure is a fairly intimate act. Along the lines of massage or acupuncture. Having said that, it’s logical that you would want to see someone who knows what they are doing. I … I can appreciate your being proactive in that regard. My concern has more to do with fraternization. You are, after all, in my direct line of command.” “I understand.” Hoshi looked away. “Just … forget I said anything. Please don’t report me.” T’Pol blinked. “Why would I report you?” “I don’t know, I just … didn’t want to come off too strong. I’m being weird. Sorry.” T’Pol regarded Hoshi for a moment. To the best of her knowledge, Starfleet’s fraternization regulations prohibited personal relationships: romance, cohabitation, sexual intercourse, and things of that nature. This didn’t seem to be a proposition for any of those things. Quite the opposite: even taking it in the least charitable light possible, Ensign Sato was asking for something slightly more intimate than their professional relationship allowed. It wasn’t as though T’Pol had no boundaries; she could push back if things went out of hand. Besides, she figured, Sato’s work is bound to suffer if she doesn’t rest. T’Pol fought the urge to wrinkle her nose in disgust. If she could do this for Corporal Cole, surely she could do it for her ensign.
go in service
What's the vibe: T'Pol is well outside of her pon farr and therefore has almost no sex drive. Unfortunately, Trip does. Luckily, thinking outside of the box has always been one of his strengths.
TL;DR - T'Pol is grey-ace and outside of her pon farr, so ServiceTop!Trip, wanting to both get off and make her feel good, does a body worship.
Who does it feature: Trip and T'Pol. I really like the idea of ServiceTop!Trip, especially as applied to non-sexual contexts. I suspect, given everything that's happened between them (sexually and not) that there's this really easy intimacy between them. Not totally identical to a human couple, to be sure, but they're certainly not shy with each other in terms of nudity.
HOWEVER!
I also wanted to explore the idea of T'Pol being on the ace spectrum, particularly outside of her pon farr. I feel like it's pretty reasonable to assume that Vulcans have sexualities outside of that, regardless of whether they express them or not (traditionalists like Soval might not, but others like T'Pau, Spock, and T'Pol might). Even so, it follows that acespec Vulcans are a thing, and I wanted to try to balance that idea with how sexual Trip and T'Pol's relationship canonically is. Obviously, T'Pol is sexually attracted to Trip, and obviously she's not 100% sex-repulsed, but there's absolutely nuance beyond that that I think could be super interesting!
An excerpt:
Trip pressed his lips to T’Pol’s, unhurried and gentle. There was, at most, a very delicate heat to it, Trip softly humming and moaning in the back of his throat. Faintly, T’Pol wondered if he’d try to introduce his tongue—she would have had no problem with that—but he never did. He wasn’t there to claim her, or attempt to make her submit. These kisses were gentle and patient, calm and easygoing. Ultimately, this was why she would always want Trip. He was her peace, and she knew she was his. For him, a shelter from the chaos of his circumstances. For her, an outlet for the chaos of her mind. Almost meditating on that, she allowed herself a long, slow breath, prompting him to hum approvingly. He pulled away, pressing a soft kiss to the corner of her mouth. “You’re so beautiful,” he murmured, before starting to kiss his way up her cheek. He smiled as she turned her head, allowing him more access. “That good, darling?” She hummed in approval. Hesitating for a moment, he pressed a kiss to the shell of her ear. She shuddered. He paused, concerned. “That okay?” It was her turn to hesitate. “I… would prefer that you not. I have changed my mind.” “No worries.” He pressed a kiss to her temple, prompting another hum. “Thanks for tellin’ me.” Gently turning her head, he kissed her other temple. She allowed herself a sigh, and he smiled even wider, trailing kisses down the other side of her face, then down her jaw. As he reached her neck, his hands came to rest on her waist. “Let’s get you settled and relaxed, shall we?”
i hope you enjoyed my infodumping! i'd be happy to share more if you want to hear more! for now, i'm going to bed!
thanks for the ask!
for those just joining, the link to the original ask game is right here!

Andor 2.4-6
I thought the first year of Andor was one of the best seasons of television ever made. Unfortunately I don't think season two is nearly as good. For example, I was so disappointed to see Cinta appear, because it was obvious the only reason she was there was that gilroy was perpetuating bury your gays. I didn't expect the writing to be so very bad as to add her name the list of lesbians killed by stray projectile weapons, along with Tara (BTVS) and Lexa (The 100) though. That's just lazy.
https://www.themarysue.com/what-is-the-bury-your-gays-trope-bury-your-gays-trope-explained/
I'm worried about Kleya leaving her DNA on Sculden's piece. I hope that doesn't get her in trouble.

The Aftershow:
Skarsgård said the reason for revolution is empathy. I thought that was interesting, and it reminded me of musk and other conservatives being against empathy.
www.dailykos.com/stories/2025/3/5/2308276/-Musk-believes-empathy-is-the-fundamental-weakness-of-Western-civilization
www.npr.org/2025/03/22/nx-s1-5321299/how-empathy-came-to-be-seen-as-a-weakness-in-conservative-circles
(Speaking of empathy, I love how Cassian cares about people. First Niya when he steals the ship, and now the bellhop on Ghorman. He still says they're too amateurish to work with though, and has no trouble killing when necessary.)
I kept thinking the Ghorman language sounds like French, and it turns out not only was it based on that language, they hired French actors to play those parts too. It didn't really work for me. My ears kept trying to pick out words I recognized. It was distracting.
Denise Gough confirms that Dedra is a sociopath, which makes Partagaz saying, "Syril must never know what this is really about," all the more interesting as she spins her web like a Ghorman spider.

More s2 critical stuff under readmore (letting you know here so I don't have to risk putting it in the tag and so if you generally like s2, you don't have to read my complaints)
Another thing, perhaps a more controversial thing, but I do not understand why v/n/der was used in the context of Jnx more than he was for Vi. I wholeheartedly thought he was going to be a vi focused plot point with the war/wick narrative especially because let's be real - Vi was his girl. s2 itself literally made it so he named her-- (also, his voice lines in the game FIT so well with a vi narrative for s2)
With all this in mind, why did Jinx get the major initial war/wick fight? Like the fight scene at the jail was cool and all and I love me a good fight scene for my girl but why did she get that? When we got the teasers, I genuinely thought that war/wick was going to be a confrontation that vi had during her pit fighting/depression post her stint as an enforcer in which she would get the chance to step up for the lanes by protecting them from this unknown beast that was enraged on the streets and she was concerned about it hurting others (like we know he was inclined to only attack those uniform but the characters didn't know that). I thought it was going to be a character development thing for her and such-- so it really took me off guard when they gave so much focus with Jnx.
From my perspective, it felt like they were trying to really mitigate that father/daughter relationship that they had set up with J.nx and Si/co which is kinda weird to me? One of the compelling things of s1 was the juxtaposition of the vandr/siIco and vi/j.nx parallels and such. The reason van and vi bonded is because they were similar and they held similar roles-- the same applied for sil and jinx. By all accounts vi and vandr were the ones perceived as the protectors, the strong ones, the capable ones---- sil and jnx lived in their shadows. They were the ones no one bet one and they had constantly try to figure out how to find their place in the world. When they were 'betrayed,' it gave both of them a catalyst to become something more--- in their eyes, something greater. It was their chance to prove the world wrong.
It is what connected them so strongly and continued to connect them even when it was by all means a toxic bond, especially for Jnx. Regarding J nx and S lco's relationship, s2 actually really frustrated me by how much it ... downplayed it? If that makes sense. Like, they gave him the water burial scene with her which was moving and sad but then essentially made it so that his death just quieted it all down. Like he was the only thing that spurred on her hallucinations and her issues when he really wasn't. Was he a factor? 100%. But Jnx just killed her father figure during a scene that was spurred on by being yelled at by both of them (which aggravated all the voices that haunted her) in an attempt to bring her to either side and afterwards Vi was like "Powder... it's okay. It'll be okay." like it didn't even click for her that Jnx could have had real affection for the one person she perceived to have been there for her.
And THAT'S the thing, to the very end, Si/co doesn't waver on that. He even uses his dying breath to say what he thinks is going to help her or at the very least reassure her. "Don't cry. You're perfect." Now, I could go on a whole other tangent on how that was NOT the thing to say to this poor girl, but my whole point in mentioning it is that he actually SHOULD have been a voice in her head that spurred on her anger. 'Remember what they have taken from you. Remember what they turned her into.' And have her lean into that symbol for Zaun she accidentally stumbled into.
Not because she feels she fits it, but because it is a means to an end and her own way of paying homage to the guilt she feels in relation to si/co. Even without his own vision, she herself has a score to settle with pi/tover. They have taken so much from her. She is sick of everyone being under their thumb and of what they do to them. Have her have that revolutionary arc but be *bad* at leading. She wasn't meant to be a leader like that, she's too narrow in her focus. She doesn't understand that people can't take risks like she can. Let her make mistakes in it because she is stuck on her path. Let her cause something bad that sobers her, that makes her question things, that makes her questions what she listens to from the voices in her head. Let her go through her real journey of grief (which is always accompanied with anger when it comes to her) and reconcile with all her emotions that go along with it. Don't stick her in her hole in the ground and have her mope around until someone gives her another catalyst. She already had a catalyst.
Vi needed an actual catalyst that had her make her own decisions and confront her internal struggle with the need to be the protector and to cling to having someone to protect as a means of self-worth. Also a chance to confront her own decisions in the attempt to fill that role that vnder ultimately gave her, 'When people look up to you, you don't get to be selfish.' Is a line that I think that sat with her and is what caused her to carry so much weight on her shoulders. So much guilt, too. I think having a storyline confront the source of that would have been really good for her.
TLDR; Si/co shouldn't have been sidelined so early. J/nx should have done more. Warw/ck should've been a Vi storyline.
#II Mun Things II#this is super long and likely not worth the read; I just had to write it out pffffft#//I had the first three and a half paragraphs of this sitting my drafts and decided to finish my complaining lmao#again having to censor names kills me but it is what it iS

File: My Life as a Teenage Robot
SCP#: AIC
Code Name: Jenny Wakeman, The Teenage Super Android
Object Class: Thaumiel/ Archon
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-AIC is not in Foundation custody and to even attempt to contain her would make her and various others, enemies of the Foundation. As such it is better to maintain a somewhat friendly relationship with SCP-AIC and her allies. What has helped is that SCP-AIC has been declared an enemy of Groups of Interest: Anderson Robotics, Sarkic Cults, and various other enemies of the SCP Foundation. As such it is the duty of MTF units and other Foundation staff to assist SCP-AIC in defeating any enemies she comes across.
Description: SCP-AIC is a sentient android that takes on the basic form as well as the personality of a teenage girl who calls herself Jenny. Though her creator refers to her as XJ-9 and declares her a defender of humanity, SCP-AIC also wants this but to live as a normal teenager as well. This unfortunately often leads to her dealing with conflict that interferes with her original purpose of defending the innocent and defeating hostels.
SCP-AIC seems to be made with an extremely basic design of basic metal plating with nuts and bolts. Though this also applies for a majority of her weapons she does contain an anomalous technology underneath her metal plating that allows her to store vast amounts of the weapons and tools stored within her body. These weapons and tools form the most basic such as hammers, drills, laser guns, and shields, to more complex such as tv screens, electro cannons, forging devices, and an energy conversion core. SCP-AIC also possesses smart technology circuitry that allows her to regenerate from any form of damage such as being torn apart or being badly burned.
This means that SCP-AIC can adapt to any scenario and recover from any disaster though this is not to say she is indestructible. SCP-AIC needs power and daily maintenance to keep herself functioning at 100%. If she refuses to use her weapons or combat knowledge often, she will become weak and sloppy. If she refuses to recharge herself, she will be unable to use her weapons properly and be excessively sluggish. If she is torn apart too much, she will be unable to repair herself until repairs are given to her.
Thankfully it’s possible for SCP-AIC to receive new upgrades and augmentations to make her stronger and overcome certain weaknesses. Though if such processes are not taken care of with precision, then it can lead to more flaws and side effects than anticipated. The best way to avoid this is to never remove SCP-AIC's "belly button screw". This single device though resembling a simple screw is actually the most advanced component as it acts as an artificial GOC COMPACT chip allowing SCP-AIC to both receive power, function properly, and never fall apart. Still, she is not indestructible which is why it is the duty of any Foundation agent or any member of the ACPA to assist her if need be.
SCP-AIC was discovered in 2003 when a meteor was heading straight for Nx-AA: Eureka, Southern Oregon, USA. SCP-AIC managed to find and destroy the meteorite before it impacted, quickly catching the attention of the SCP Foundation. Naturally the Foundation was furious as, yet another anomaly created in Nexus Point-AA nearly exposed itself to the world by flying recklessly in space to allow civilian satellites to see it. Thankfully Mobile Task Force Dionysus-1 “Fake News” managed to downplay the damage by making it seem like a missile strike form the US military destroyed the meteor for testing purposes. Still originally the Global Occult Coalition was to have SCP-AIC dismantled as punishment.
However, due to SCP-AIC being sentient it ended up leading to a majority of the 108 GOC council as well as the Ethics Committee to stand against this decision. This ended up with a debate among representatives of the ACPA that nearly tore the whole alliance apart. Thankfully it was resolved peacefully with SCP-AIC recognized as an independent ally and a legal resident of Nexus Point-AA. It was also declared that to stand against SCP-AIC was to stand against the Global Occult Coalition and the rest of the ACPA by extension. She has even been recognized as one of the essential anomalous defenders of humanity as a result. It is for this reason SCP-AIC is labeled as Dual Object Class Thaumiel, Archon.

Enterprise (A prequel that looks FAR more advanced than its future)
[All images are owned by Paramount. Please don’t sue me]
With the release of First Contact, it was established that mankind would achieve faster than light travel in 2063, 67 years from when the film premiered (or 39 years from now. Come on Cochrane, get a move on!) However, it would be almost 90 years from then that Earth would truly begin exploring space.
youtube
(Thanks to Rui Cruz)
Enterprise (produced by Rick Berman and (sigh...) Brannon Braga) is the final Star Trek series until Paramount+ went online. It follows the early space exploration done by Earth ten years before the founding of the United Federation of Planets (so the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) is the first Federation starship to bear the name, while this Enterprise is an Earth vessel)
Speaking of…
Enterprise (NX-01) is the first Earth vessel capable of achieving Warp 5 (125 times the speed of light), and the first capable of deep space exploration (though it will take a few weeks between systems) Despite being about 100 years technologically inferior to the USS Enterprise, it looks much more advanced (great continuity there, Braga!), but surely the interior looks more clunky, right?
OK, it does look a lot more cramped, but still looks like it was designed later than the 1960s.
Now, onto the uniforms
(Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter)
The standard Starfleet (what NASA would become after the invention of the warp drive) uniform is much like that of NASA flight suits: a blue jumpsuit. However, the color coding is still there (and following the colors for TOS) on the shoulder pads.
You will no doubt notice the two non-humans among the main cast. I’ll get to those later. Now, onto the legendary crew of this historic vessel that would help usher in the formation of the United Federation of Planets…
The Commanding Officer is Captain Jonathan Archer (played by Scott Bakula, formerly the star of the original Quantum Leap) Archer pretty much has the weight of Earth on his shoulders, as the success or failure of humanity’s journey to the stars depends on him. Too bad he doesn’t trust any of Earth’s allies. He also brought his beagle (Porthos) along for the journey (hope he’s starship-broken)
Speaking of allies, his First Officer and Science Officer is Sub-Commander T’Pol of the Vulcan High Command (played by Jolene Blalock), who was assigned to Enterprise in exchange for the Vulcans’ star charts after Enterprise blundered into Klingon space.
The Vulcans felt humans were not ready for interstellar travel and held back technology until they felt Earth was ready for it. Many on Enterprise initially feel that T’Pol was sent to spy on them for the Vulcans. She eventually leaves the Vulcan High Command to become an official member of Enterprise’s crew.
The Chief Engineer is Commander Charles “Trip” Tucker (played by Connor Trinneer) and is an old friend of Archer’s. He is responsible for upgrading and debugging the new technology Enterprise has equipped. Later in the series, he has a relationship with T’Pol.
The Head of Security and Tactical/Armory Officer is Lt. Malcolm Reed (played by Dominic Keating) Reed’s family was all Royal Navy, but Malcolm is aquaphobic, so he joined Starfleet. As a member of a military family, he understands the need for discipline and attempts to instill it on Enterprise (with mixed results)
youtube
(Thanks to Sipping Kanar with Dukat)
The Communications Officer is Ensign Hoshi Sato (played by Linda Park), who is an expert linguist that learns languages quickly, which is important as the Universal Translator (the device that makes everyone speak perfect English) hasn’t been developed at the start of the series.
The Helmsman is Ensign Travis Mayweather (played by Anthony Montgomery), who was born in space and knows many of the races along Earth’s trade routes.
The ship’s doctor (not Chief Medical Officer as he’s not officially part of Starfleet, but is just along for the ride) is Dr. Phlox (a Denoubulan played by John Billingsly), an expert in xeno-medicine, able to treat the crew when they encounter something that Earth medicine hasn’t yet encountered.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Star Trek without other races to butt heads with.
It also wouldn’t be Star Trek if the Klingons weren’t somehow involved (yes, in this prequel the forehead ridges are around, then somehow disappear in tome for TOS, then reappear in time for The Motion Picture. Can someone explain this please?
youtube
(Thanks to Vladimir)
Thanks, Braga Worf!
Also, there should be Romulans.
Fortunately, someone informed Braga that no one knows what the Romulans look like until TOS.
We also see the first contact with the Andorians, who are more than a bit wary of Enterprise since they are allied with the Vulcans (who they are at war with)
We also see a brand new enemy starting in season 3: the Xindi (When I first heard the name advertised, I was hoping I heard the Kzinti, but no luck) The Xindi are an alliance of several species (primate, insectoid, reptilian, and amphibian)
However, Brannon Braga’s lackadaisical approach to continuity reared its head in two major continuity errors with two factions that should not have been seen for another 200 years or so:
The Ferengi
...and the Borg, both of which had (thankfully) only one appearance.
The series ran for four seasons before being cancelled due to low ratings (the first since TOS to end prematurely) However, they got a proper final sendoff…
youtube
(Thanks to April 5, 2063)
If you would like to watch the series, it’s available on Paramount+ or behind your favorite paywall. If there is an episode you would like me to review, please let me know!
