The Duchess Of Sussex A to Z challenge.
A is for Activist. “Activisit. noun. 1. a person who campaigns to bring about political or social change.”
Meghan used her voice and way with words to help create change as a proud feminist and human rights activist. I for one, am so looking forward to seeing what patronages she takes on and how she continues to use her platform for good.

A is for Ancestors
Even before I was a Gaelic Polytheist, ancestor veneration was something I held dear. I’ve kept an ancestor shrine for many years now with pictures and items that remind me of the deceased in some way. There are skull candles and other visual imagery of the dead, a candle for each of the deceased represented, and a few extras for ancestors that have been lost to time and diaspora. I’ll have to photograph this, too…which reminds me that I never photographed my current working alter for last week’s post…
Something I see asked a lot regards who qualifies as an ancestor. In my opinion, the answer is: anyone you damn well see fit. For example, I include my grandparents and great-grandparents, both those I met and those that passed before I got a chance to know them, as well as friends that have passed, and even pets. I’ve also seen people wonder about honoring non-Pagan, and especially Christian, ancestors in a Pagan way. Personally, I think that once someone has passed on, that they appreciate any sense of being rememberer. It’s my own UPG, I guess, but it’s how I feel.
I do keep pets as a separate little area because the relationship there is different, but I’m an animist and believe all living things have souls, so it only makes sense to honor them along with my human relatives. Another difference is here is that I (will) keep their ashes. My childhood dog is buried in my mother’s backyard as she passed away on her own (and out of the blue) during my second year of college and my mom was kinda beside herself. But future pets’ ashes will have a place of honor.
In addition to having candles for unknown ancestors, I also keep something similar for animals. I work in emergency veterinary medicine and death is something I see daily. And I see it from both ends of the spectrum; I see the little old lady that’s had a cat for 25 years and it’s time to let go and I see the asshole that’s let a puppy not eat for 5 days and is dying from a totally preventable disease, but never vaccinated and now can’t afford to treat. So, I have empty bottles of our euthanasia drug sitting on a shelf above my main ancestor shrine with several candles that are for the loved, the unloved, and the unknown.
All of these I consider to be part of the ancestors. I’ve included some pictures of my ancestor shrine below and I’ll upload these plus a few more as a photoset as soon as Tumblr gets its act together today.

An Audrey II for the Animal Alphabets thing on twitter. This is the first time I’m attempting these, so hopefully I can get them all. Playing a little catch up only because I just started a week after the new set began.
