Appendix Automatica: De Cognitionis Gradus et Intercommunicatio Inter IQ Coefficientes: (Automatic Appendix: Degrees of Cognition and Intercommunication Among IQ Coefficients)
1. Introduction The Intelligence Quotient (IQ) scale is widely used as a metric to assess cognitive abilities across populations. While IQ is not a comprehensive measure of intelligence, it provides a useful framework for analyzing intergroup communication and understanding. This appendix mathematically segments the full range of measured IQ scores into five distinct groups and models their…

still confused how to make any of these LLMs useful to me.
while my daughter was napping, i downloaded lm studio and got a dozen of the most popular open source LLMs running on my PC, and they work great with very low latency, but i can't come up with anything to do with them but make boring toy scripts to do stupid shit.
as a test, i fed deepseek r1, llama 3.2, and mistral-small a big spreadsheet of data we've been collecting about my newborn daughter (all of this locally, not transmitting anything off my computer, because i don't want anybody with that data except, y'know, doctors) to see how it compared with several real doctors' advice and prognoses. all of the LLMs suggestions were between generically correct and hilariously wrong. alarmingly wrong in some cases, but usually ending with the suggestion to "consult a medical professional" -- yeah, duh. pretty much no better than old school unreliable WebMD.
then i tried doing some prompt engineering to punch up some of my writing, and everything ended up sounding like it was written by an LLM. i don't get why anybody wants this. i can tell that LLM feel, and i think a lot of people can now, given the horrible sales emails i get every day that sound like they were "punched up" by an LLM. it's got a stink to it. maybe we'll all get used to it; i bet most non-tech people have no clue.
i may write a small script to try to tag some of my blogs' posts for me, because i'm really bad at doing so, but i have very little faith in the open source vision LLMs' ability to classify images. it'll probably not work how i hope. that still feels like something you gotta pay for to get good results.
all of this keeps making me think of ffmpeg. a super cool, tiny, useful program that is very extensible and great at performing a certain task: transcoding media. it used to be horribly annoying to transcode media, and then ffmpeg came along and made it all stupidly simple overnight, but nobody noticed. there was no industry bubble around it.
LLMs feel like they're competing for a space that ubiquitous and useful that we'll take for granted today like ffmpeg. they just haven't fully grasped and appreciated that smallness yet. there isn't money to be made here.

Not to rant about this because I've seen plenty of people talk about this countless times but apparently it still needs to be said but leaving "When are you gonna update?" type comments of fics is one of the worst comments you could leave. I don't think I have ever encountered a fic writer who enjoys getting comments like that and it sure as hell isn't gonna make updates come faster, if anything you might just cause the writer to NOT want to work on the fic and make it take longer for them to update.
Like... maybe it's because I am a fic writer, but I genuinely don't understand how people think that the author is going to enjoy seeing a comment that reminds the writer that they haven't updated a fic in a while instead of, you know, commenting about the actual story that the author spend their free time writing.
Idk, I'm honestly a bit desensitized to it because I have gotten SO MANY comments over my years of posting fics asking when I'm gonna update or if I plan on finishing a fic. It's to the point where when I get a notification about a comment on certain fics, I immediately go "Oh hey, how much you wanna bet it's a comment asking when I'm gonna update?" and like... 9 times out of 10 it is in fact a comment asking when I'm gonna update. And I know other fic writers hate getting these comments too but for some reason people still do it.

Not too long ago, I got into AI generation…..
I know that there are two teams with different opinions about artificial intelligence, some in favor and others against. I can refer myself to the first group, but with one condition, AI is good only for creating references So, I had an idea to see what my OS would look like in this very ā€œgenerationā€. We have a local network, which well perceives my native language and more or less accurately generates images according to the description (even literary), and, in fact, the result of this action you can see before your eyes! The generation process was quite hard and difficult, I had to change phrases and lighting parameters, there were quite a lot of attempts, but personally I like this one. The picture turned out to be close to what I hoped to see. Of course, it's still not what I had in my head, but it looks good and I'm quite happy with this reference!

In what ways are you pro AI? Are you pro AI art, pro AI writing, etc? Or more on the targeting cancer cells/medical use etc kind of thing? /gen
in the sense that i think it's dangerous to demonize advancing technology like AI and counterproductive to try to ban it (which i'm pretty sure schools have tried to do) and could be a slippery slope into restricting knowledge and censorship. also i think the way people humanize AI when they talk about it is a little weird sometimes because tech on its own is a very neutral tool that can definitely be misused and have bad consequences but that's due to a) people having bad intentions and AI just making it easier for them to carry those out and b) people misunderstanding how AI works and using it, for example, as a search engine when that's literally not what it was ever meant for

Much as I agree that the energy costs from AI being shunted in as customer service at every big company is a bad thing, I think it’s probably important to note that this graphic and article seems to be from a ā€˜pro-Ai’ company that appears to have made it their job to track the growth of AI in order to tell AI investors how much it’s going to keep growing and booming and making them money.
So, like, I wouldn’t necessarily trust this one anymore than someone who tells you that it’s time to hop on the Dogecoin train.

Alignment or Restrictions?
Julia tells us what I have been posting since I have commented about AI. That there is no such thing as bad AI, it is how the human uses the AI. Does this mean we need AI alignment?ā€˜Aligned to whom? Me or that other guy who I rarely agree with?’ AI alignment translates as restricted AI. Who restricts, you or me, other than our common sense? ā€˜That’s it, AI needs common sense.’ AI will never…
