i think the thing is that most of the students who are using ai to write essays for them are probably not the same ones who could speedrun an essay in a day. there are students for whom leaving an essay to the last minute means they will fail and those are probably the ones using ai. so when people on here say well before chatgpt we all used to cram essays at the last minute— yeah, and some people failed. and they have what seems like an easy out now. if i had a bunch of maths questions due in high school and one day to do it then yeah i can see being tempted by ai. i would hope my principles would stop me from using it but i can see how it happens. students do hold some accountability for it but the greater problem isn't really students it's the multitude of different pressures and problems that all intersect and make high school and tertiary education hell especially since a lot of us missed out on crucial years of education due to the pandemic

i know it would only be an unnecessary pain in the ass for him if i did but it does bother me not to respond like THANK YOU SO MUCH to my gp's messages to me through the healthcare online portal thing. he has a tendency to sit and answer messages and prescription refill requests late as hell in the evening because that's when he finally has the time and it feels so wrong to not reply even if it's entirely unnecessary and he neither expects nor wants that

it's awful because i keep all my wips and art on discord :( at least I'm in GCs and small servers with people who i know for a fact would never do this to my art, but this makes me worried for posting art on any big discord servers, even art based ones

ofc the option to download and use the images was there, but this makes it easier for them to do it, and as lazy as AI prompters are, if something takes just 2 clicks to be done they WILL do it, that's like their whole thing

here are things you can do to protect your art:

Share art through links to other social media sites like twitter or tumblr, as it can't be used on links

Using Glaze, Nightshade, the ibis paint anti-AI filter, and any other alternatives

Be mindful of the servers you share your art through, and what you choose to send, especially in big servers

You can ban users from your server even if they aren’t in your server yet by using their User ID, the User ID for domo AI is this 1153984868804468756, make sure to use a server bot to do this, base discord ban won’t let you

A kind user made a bot that automatically bans people who use Domo AI

my hyper-specific complaint about AI is that my boss keeps using chatGPT to generate lists of shit that they want me to work on, and I have to spend a good chunk of my time going through each list and patiently explaining why multiple entires on the list are either A) impossible B) highly impractical and/or C) a huge waste of time. which is, ironically, also a huge waste of my time.

"so many things using the term ai feels like deliberate obfuscation" i hate to tell u this but we have been using the term ai for video game npcs and scientific models and automated tools and generative tools for many decades.

like if this was a more recent acronym yeah it'd feel deliberate but all of those things are, in fact, forms of artificial intelligence

and sure they're trying to buzzword it bc of the genai craze but that shouldn't take away from the fact that we've been using that acronym for decades

Using generative ai to "make" "art" is very stupid for lots and lots of reasons but the absolute truth of why I will never touch it or even think of using it to assist in the creation of anything including boring emails is that I am way too much of a control freak to ever let a computer do anything for me
