No...This is Before HDMI Was A Thing. You had to put the TV on actual channel 3. You turned it to channel 3 and ignored whatever was broadcasting and then you turned on your console or your VCR. (Because you also had to do this to watch a tape.)
There wasn't an HDMI channel. There wasn't a specific setting for "watch something other than what is being broadcast." You just put the TV on channel 3 and then channel 3 got overridden by whatever other thing you wanted the TV to display.
I have no idea why it was Channel 3 Specifically that was The Designated Channel for VCRs and video games, but it was true for every single TV I ever encountered.
If you failed to put the TV on channel 3 and turned your video game/VCR on anyway, it wouldn't work. You'd just see whatever was being broadcast on the channel you had the TV on. Your game/movie WOULD be playing, but it wouldn't actually be displayed on the TV. Sometimes your sibling would take advantage of this to torment you by changing the TV channel in the middle or a boss fight or something.

#also my ''things i did regularly that a younger person wouldn't understand'' entry is this:#you want to talk with your friend tonight so you make plans for them to call you at 11 because by then your mom should be in bed#which means that she won't realize you're on the phone until like 1am on a school night#but when your friend calls you it won't just be the phone in your room that rings - it'll be every phone in the house#and then you will be Caught#so at about 10:50 you call the movie theater and listen to the recording of the showtimes on infinite repeat#until the call waiting beeps to let you know your friend is calling#because the call waiting beep is a sound In The Call instead of something the ringer does#Another Entry (that I won't bother to explain but that will definitely turn some people into dust): AOL Keywords
