TECHSHOW 2019 Review
Just one month ago, the annual ABA TECHSHOW kicked off again here in Chicago. Attendees left with tips, tricks, new tools, new connections, and plenty of cool swag. Now that they’ve had some time to process the takeaways, we asked our panelists to give us their thoughts on TECHSHOW 2019 and suggestions for TECHSHOW 2020.
Our Panelists
Dennis Kennedy (DK), Gyi Tsakalakis (GT), Alexander Paykin (AP), Allison Shields (AS), and Greg Siskind (GS).
What do you like best about TECHSHOW?
DK: TECHSHOW has built an amazing community over the years. It is my favorite show for “learning in the hallway” experiences. Speakers are very accessible and there are a variety of events that allow attendees to meet up with like-minded legal tech enthusiasts.
GT: In a word: people. I have been very fortunate to meet a lot of great people at TECHSHOW over the years. The mindset around networking, learning, and yes “innovating,” is particularly conspicuous at TECHSHOW.
AP: The EXPO. It’s an opportunity to see hundreds of vendors and discover new technologies and solutions that didn’t exist a year ago…
AS: It’s tough to pick just one thing—there is so much to do and see! One of my favorites is the excellent opportunities for networking; seeing people that I usually see only at TECHSHOW and meeting new people, from presenters to vendors to attendees. I love seeing which hot new products are out in the EXPO and meeting the faces behind the products and services.
GS: The program speakers and exhibitors cater especially to smaller and mid-sized firms which makes it a lot easier to apply what we learn back in our offices.
What new experience sticks out to you about this year’s event?
DK: I found the increased attention on the use of tech in legal education and teach tech in law school to be a great addition to TECHSHOW. It’s great to hear about what is actually happening in the classroom these days.
AP: While this year did not showcase any new or ground-breaking technologies, it was good to see a lot more competition in various vendor fields, including especially many more remote receptionist services. It’s great to see a larger choice of vendors with similar products, as this has a great downward effect on price.
AS: I love the idea of Startup Alley and the Pitch Competition; it’s fun to see the new ideas people have in the works! While it isn’t technically part of ABA TECHSHOW itself, the Women in Legal Tech event held on Wednesday was a fantastic event with some excellent speakers and lots of great networking. I was happy to be a part of the luncheon honoring the LTRC’s Women in Legal Tech class of 2019.
GS: On Saturday morning, there was an excellent panel—”60 in 60″—that went session-by-session and noted some of the key points from each. Very helpful if you missed a session you wanted to attend.
What were your favorite sessions/tracks?
DK: I mentioned the legal education track, but, truth be told, my favorite experiences were chances I got to talk with leading legal techsters in the halls and in the EXPO.
GT: Julie Tolek’s session, “Is Your Web Presence Customer Friendly?” and Jess Birken’s session, “Mastering Google Adwords,” stand out. Admittedly, as their co-presenter, I’m biased.
AP: As always, the “60 in 60” session provided a good overview of legal must-haves, without spending too long to spoon-feed the audience as to each app.
AS: I did not have the opportunity to attend too many of the sessions this year, but I thought the academic track was especially interesting, and I think it is important for TECHSHOW to include the law schools and programs for them to encourage and support technology education and innovation for law students. The sessions I attended in this track were definitely enlightening and I look forward to more in the future.
GS: “Automation Tools for Law Firm Operations” (Trending Tech track), “Practical Magic: Actual Uses of Artificial Intelligence in Real Law Firms,” (Trending Tech), and “The Human Side of Technology Implementation” (Choosing and Using).
For someone who hasn’t attended TECHSHOW before, what would you tell them?
DK: I’m not buying your excuses for not attending in 2020. If you want to up your technology game by learning what other legal professionals are actually doing, TECHSHOW is a friendly, practical show with takeaways that you can use as soon as you get back to your office or, with your smartphone, maybe even before you get back.
GT: Meet people. I find myself saying this a lot. The tech is cool, most of the sessions are valuable. But most of that stuff can be found online too. The reason you go is to meet people, pick brains, build relationships. That’s the true value of TECHSHOW, and really, any in-person conference. Otherwise, you read the posts, get the decks, and attend the webinars from the comfort of home.
AP: Get the EXPO Only pass and check out all the new tech!
AS: Here are my suggestions:
Keep an eye out for early bird pricing for next year’s event and, at the very least, go for the EXPO if you can’t afford a full pass that would include all of the educational sessions.
Plan ahead to make sure you take full advantage of the time the EXPO is open, and if you aren’t attending educational sessions, or if there is a time when there are no sessions that interest you, use that time wisely in the EXPO—you’ll likely get much more attention from the vendors when there are fewer people on the floor. Some vendors will even let you schedule a time in advance for a demo or meeting to discuss your specific needs.
Make sure you visit the bookstore to see the latest titles from the Law Practice Division as well as those tried-and-true “evergreen” titles—all books sold at the event are sold at the member price even if you are not an ABA or Law Practice Division member, and attendees get $10 in “Book Bucks” to use for any book they choose.
Plot out the educational sessions you’d like to attend so you know when you’ll be free.
Bring lots of business cards for networking and for vendor giveaways!
Download the app for easy access to schedules, info about social and other events, and session materials.
Don’t forget to follow up with all of the great contacts you meet at TECHSHOW.
GS: Spending a lot of time in the EXPO getting to know the products. Networking is one of my favorite things about TECHSHOW. I’ve made a number of good connections after attending year in year out. There are plenty of opportunities at various social events. And, of course, try to get to as many sessions as you can.
TECHSHOW 2020 will be held February 26-29 in Chicago, IL. Join all of our wonderful panelists in attending! Go to TECHSHOW.com for more information.

ABA Techshow 2018 examines legal profession's direction with technology emphasis
By Gerardo Alvarez and Jason Tashea
June 2018
Photographs by Saverio Truglia
With a new and larger venue, ABA Techshow 2018 went beyond the usual focus on legal technology and provided sessions on leadership, team building and mindfulness.
At the Hyatt Regency in Chicago for the first time, the show paired panel discussions focused on mentoring female and minority lawyers alongside the traditional sessions examining workplace efficiency, as well as legal issues arising from old, new and emerging technologies.
Those technologies took center stage as multiple panelists and speakers talked in March about the ways lawyers can augment their practices by utilizing artificial intelligence, blockchain, virtual reality and the “internet of things.”
Photographs by Saverio Truglia
Referring to these emerging technologies as important rungs of the “fourth industrial revolution,” keynote speaker Dan Katz, associate professor and director of the Law Lab at the Chicago-Kent College of Law, argued that they hold the key toward restarting what he called a long-stalled trend of legal innovation.
Katz argued that the legal innovation agenda is not the coming onslaught of robot lawyers, contrary to popular media accounts. Rather, the future is a marriage between technology and humans, which he said is more powerful than either group alone. “To the legal innovators, I say let’s stay the course,” he said about looking toward the future.
Blockchain, for example, can make legal services more efficient and less costly by establishing automated smart contracts that don’t have to rely on human intermediaries to be enacted. According to David Fisher, founder and CEO at Integra Ledger, a legal blockchain consortium, lawyers have to first understand how blockchain functions before it can be effectively used in the legal industry.
“The first step is for attorneys to understand what it is because there’s a common misconception that blockchain is a new application,” Fisher said during his “Blockchain Reaction: The Next Big Thing” presentation. “People are used to thinking in terms of new software, new apps … but the reality is that just how you don’t go and buy the internet, you don’t go and buy a blockchain.”
This misconception has held back the development of new, efficient legal tools that implement blockchain—which Fisher said could make legal services more effective because blockchain establishes digital trust between two parties, does not necessitate a third-party intermediary, and is more secure.
ADVANCES IN DIGITAL DEVICES
Another emerging technology lawyers should be aware of is the internet of things. This is defined by a device’s connectivity to the internet and other devices, as well as the user data it collects. Given the ubiquity of these devices, as well as the incredible volume of information they collect, it was only a matter of time before they started affecting criminal and civil cases and raising novel legal issues.
“In some ways, it is like the early stages of e-discovery,” said Antigone Peyton, chair of the intellectual property and technology law practice at Protorae Law in Tysons, Virginia. “It’s the Wild West.”
A 2017 report from Gartner, an information technology research company, forecast the use of 8.4 billion internet of things devices in the world last year, including baby monitors, cars, digital assistants and refrigerators. For this year, 11.2 billion. By 2020, it forecast there will be 20.4 billion internet of things devices worldwide.
“A lot of the consumers that have them are unaware that their data is being collected,” said Bob Ambrogi, a legal technology blogger at LawSites. He added that lawyers have to be cognizant of the devices clients have and how to retrieve their data.
Meanwhile, advances in virtual reality mean legal education—and even litigation—could soon take place in cyberspace rather than in the physical world. Kenton Brice, director of technology innovation at the University of Oklahoma College of Law, said the college has launched the Oklahoma Virtual Academic Laboratory to provide students across the campus with educational virtual reality experiences.
He said practicing attorneys already have been taking advantage of such technology to simulate situations such as evidence presentation in mediation and arbitration, as well as discovery requests and responses. But he acknowledges that implementation in the classroom is a work in progress. “We’re still trying to figure out student adoption,” Brice said.
This article was published in the June 2018 issue of the ABA Journal with the title "Looking Ahead: ABA Techshow 2018 examined where the legal profession is heading—with a heavy focus on new and emerging technology."

Can a ‘Family of Bots' Reshape College Teaching?
Can college students tell the difference between a human teaching assistant and a chatbot? A Georgia Tech computer scientist has been pursuing that question for several years. And the answer has profound implications for the future of college teaching.
Ashok K. Goel, a professor of computer science and cognitive science, and his team have refined perhaps the first robot teaching assistant, dubbed Jill Watson. Here’s the scenario: Last year in an online course on artificial intelligence with 400 students, two chatbots joined 13 human TAs to answer student questions about the course and its content. Students were told that software robots were in the mix, and they were challenged to identify which of the voices they were interacting with were human and which were machine.
The robot TAs were given the names Stacy Sisko and Ian Braun. One bot was designed to be a bit more personable than the other: if a student mentioned she was from Chicago, Stacy Sisko would make a comment about the city. Ian Braun was all business, and weighed in on fewer student questions (he was an older version of the software that the researchers keep refining).
At the end of the semester about half of the students correctly guessed that Stacy was merely computer code. Only ten percent correctly identified Ian as a bot. And ten percent mistakenly thought that two of the human TAs were chatbots.
This semester, students did better at unmasking the bots, but not because they sounded more robotic, says Goel. “The performance has reached the level where she is performing so well that students say ‘This one must be a bot,’” he says. For instance, students can look in the online forum and see that the chatbot quickly responded to dozens of students, while the human TAs have only had time to type out replies to a few in the same amount of time.
Goel stresses that he has not cut back on human TAs since bringing in the Jill Watson software—he hires the same amount for the same number of hours per week. But he says what those humans spend their time doing has changed.
“The human TAs were just answering the more mundane questions again and again and again,” Goel says. “By automating some of the very mundane things, we’re freeing up time,” he says, to do things like give more-detailed answers to other student questions. “There are so many things to do as a teacher that students can take as much of your time as you have,” he argues.
Georgia Tech is not alone in developing teaching bots. IBM Watson Education is building its own chatbot that it has added to some commercial textbooks as part of a pilot project. (The Watson AI system, you may recall, famously beat a Jeopardy champion on the trivia game show a few years back). And Deakin University, in Australia, is developing a comprehensive student assistant it calls Deakin Genie that it hopes will help in the classroom, as well as with more administrative aspects of campus life. There are also a handful of startups creating AI chatbots to help with everyday questions students might have on about, say, financial aid deadlines.
Outside of higher education, the era of assistive bots has arrived (just ask Siri on your iPhone or Alexa in your kitchen). But there has been resistance by many in higher education to bringing them onto campus because they are associated with being too automated and too impersonal, says Brian Fleming, executive director of an innovation center at Southern New Hampshire University called the Sandbox ColLABorative.
“There’s a right degree of skepticism,” he notes. “The question for adoptions in higher ed is, ‘What is the problem bots solve?’” That will differ for different institutions, he adds, praising Deakin Genie and experiments with bots for things like admissions, enrollment and advising.
But he doubts that experiments like Jill Watson will work outside of a few computer-science classes (where, after all, the students are learning to build bots themselves). “We have still never seen conclusive evidence that anyone wants to be taught by a bot,” says Fleming. “Teaching and learning will remain a human endeavor.”
Goel, however, sees a future where chatbots are part of the teaching mix in a range of disciplines (though he agrees that humans will always take the lead). He plans to test his software in a biology course soon, and believes it could work for poetry as well. His plan is to publish scripts for his chatbots that others could use or adapt to build their own versions of Jill Watson. “My sense is that we are at least two or three years away from even the first script,” he says.
So what part of the teaching role can a chatbot never do? Goel recognizes that his work raises the question. “If in 10 years every student has such an assistant and every teacher has such an assistant, than the roles of the teacher fundamentally changes, I would think.”
His latest idea is to create what he calls a “family of bots,” each with a specialization. One might be designed to explain the syllabus, another to answer course content, and another to welcome students (and perhaps other micro-roles). And this semester the researchers are trying out new names from different ethnicities to see if that impacts how students interact and view the virtual TAs.
Even if such chatbots never make it past the research phase, they seem certain to teach humans something about what it means to teach.

Rise of the Virtual Super-Teacher
How AI-powered personalization and immersive technologies are set to fundamentally transform the way we learn.
“It seems to me that it is through this machine that for the first time we will be able to have a one-to-one relationship between information source and information consumer.”
These are the eerily prophetic words of the late Science Fiction author and futurist visionary Isaac Asimov, long before Google became a verb.
“In the old days people would hire a tutor for their children and they’d adapt their teaching to the tastes and abilities of their students. But how many people could afford to hire a pedagogue? Most children went uneducated, and the only way to educate the masses was to have one teacher for a great many students, and to organize this they followed a curriculum. So we either had a one-to-one relationship for the few or a one-to-many relationship for the many, but now, there’s a possibility of a one-to-one relationship for the many. Everyone can have a teacher in the form of the gathered knowledge of the human species.”
Asimov’s tantalizing promise of scaling one-to-one instruction would, quite literally, give students the best of all worlds.

Now let’s take this one step further, and imagine teaching a class with hundreds of students, yet being able to pay perfect attention to each one, detecting the slightest hint of confusion and projecting the appropriate reaction accordingly. This would give teachers super-powers they could not dream of leveraging in normal classroom environment.
That scenario might actually be much closer than we might think, with the advent of immersive technologies that integrate with Artificial Intelligence (AI). Since Virtual Reality (VR) relies on motion capture to work, it already has the inbuilt mechanisms capable of capturing and interpreting body language to create a “digital footprint” of each user.
The next step then is to use AI and machine learning to “teach” systems to filter, adapt and personalize interactions accordingly. It would be the ultimate fulfilment of Asimov’s vision, and something that leading academics in this space have long predicted.
“VR is the most psychologically powerful medium in history,” says Jeremy Bailenson, Communications Professor at Stanford University. In his recently published book Experience on Demand, Bailenson recounts how, although he’s been studying VR and its practical applications since the 1990’s, he is often taken aback by how much more impactful it is compared to other media, particularly where it is applied to learning, which led him to confidently assert that “almost any skill can be improved by virtual instruction.”
In his study of transformed social interaction Bailenson investigated how this could work in practice: “Unlike telephone conversations and video-conferences, interactants in virtual environments have the ability to systematically filter the physical appearance and behavioral actions of their avatars in the eyes of their conversational partners, amplifying or suppressing features and nonverbal signals in real time for strategic purposes. These transformations can have a drastic impact on interactants’ persuasive and instructional abilities.” In other words, the amount of engagement that a teacher’s avatar had with its virtual students had demonstrable impact on their engagement – and consequently in their learning.
The reason which makes VR such an effective and impactful learning tool is that it allows learners to achieve what is known as psychological presence. This essentially means that when we enter a virtual environment, we believe we are present, in spite of our conscious brains telling us that this is indeed a simulation. An important element in achieving such psychological presence is the concept of embodied cognition, which tells us that people absorb information better when performing actions themselves – rather than watching others do so or hearing/reading about them.
“Embodied cognition acknowledges that the mind and body are agents working together to make meaning of our experiences. It’s the idea that our mind alone does not dictate our worldview but instead that our cognition is shaped by the relationship between our mind and our body to inform and navigate our world, make meaning from our environments, and ultimately to result in learning,” explains educational and developmental psychologist Lindsay Portnoy.
Emerging research on VR indicate that the environment is a powerful tool from which we can create meaningful experiences that can effect great changes in our ability to perceive and understand the world around us. One study demonstrated that immersive VR provides better learning of physical movements than a two-dimensional video, and researchers from the University of Chicago found that simple gesturing in elementary students could potentially change and improve their knowledge. Current research by Disney, on the other hand, shows how VR is fast becoming seamless enough to enable it to replicate and synchronize with physical world behaviours such as catching a ball.
The advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning technology will enable such datasets to be leveraged in a responsive and contextual way. This combination of AI and immersive capabilities means that future learning environments will become increasingly personalized, adapting to the individual needs of each user in real-time by analysing their “digital footprint” data.
“I’m reminded of an article I read about a father who felt “super human” while using his Amazon Echo. He and his kids loved interacting with the speaker and found the ability to call Ubers, order pizza and play music to be truly empowering and immersive – it really felt like they were interacting with an actual person,” says Ryan Andal, president and co-founder at Secret Location, who says he’s felt the same “super human” effect while using VR: “When I imagine how many jobs will be lost through automation and AI, I’m encouraged by how VR can combine with AR to allow us to be ‘super human’ and decrease knowledge gaps, learning curves and barriers for collaboration. VR will essentially allow declining markets to rejuvenate much faster than normal because of how powerful it can be as an educational and training tool.”
Andal believes that when VR becomes more accessible and affordable, distance learning could be the medium’s most important use case, opening the doors to spreading education – in its broadest possible sense – into areas typically shut out from it.
“We often think of education in the traditional sense – children in a classroom – but I believe VR is best used for training and learning new skills or trades. In that sense, VR is a complete overhaul of what’s possible! It eliminates the need for expensive materials to practice on and can put students in an array of situations that cannot normally be simulated for training purposes. VR means students will get that coveted “real-life work” experience sooner than usual.”
We are, in fact, already seeing such practical training applications emerging in a broad range of areas. The U.S. alpine team recently turned to VR to allow American racers to memorize the hill and take hundreds of virtual runs down a fast, tricky course in preparation for the 2018 Winter Olympics. They are the first known Olympic team in the world to utilize virtual reality in their training.
Troy Taylor, high performance director for U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, believes giving a racer the ability to experience the course in VR multiple times ahead of the games gives his team a crucial competitive advantage. STRIVR, the company which developed the simulation, has been working for many years with various sports outfits such as the NFL and NBA to improve athlete’s performance through virtual training. This has been so effective, in fact that some players reported having flashbacks to games they’d only experienced in VR.
Walmart is also leveraging this to train its employees following a successful pilot program last year. The company is also working with STRIVR to incorporate VR more widely in its training. The goal, STRIVR CEO Derek Belch told The Verge in a recent interview, is to put employees in scenarios that would be inconvenient to physically re-create — like dealing with spills, or preparing for a Black Friday shopping spree.
“We’re using computer vision to map scenes, so we literally know exactly where someone’s looking,” says Belch. “Wearers might look around an environment and find the spill, for example, then answer a multiple-choice question about what effect it could have on the store,” he explains.
The global EdTech is set to grow to an estimated $252 billion by 2020, and VR is expected to capture a large proportion of that booming market. The combination of ideological and commercial incentives will therefore likely lead to accelerated development of applications and capabilities that will empower teachers and learners like never before.
Where the Internet has made great strides towards democratizing knowledge, VR will democratize experiences. Immersive technologies represent a revolution in the way we transmit knowledge and will shape how we learn and conduct business more collaboratively in a globalized, boundaryless world.
The implications of this are profound according to Bailenson: “I firmly believe that for people who love to learn, the future is going to be filled with thrilling educational experiences,” he concludes.
For those interested in exploring the potential of Immersive Technologies in Learning, the Global Education and Skills Forum will be hosting an Immersive Learning Showcase and series of insightful discussions on the 17th and 18th March 2018. GESF 2018 is an initiative of the Varkey Foundation to improve standards of education for underprivileged children around the world.
