The TV switches to a commercial break featuring an ad for a late night hotline just as your phone buzzes. You reach for the remote to mute it and bring your phone to your ear. No sane person calls you at this hour. Which only leaves…
“Yes?”
“Can you…” there’s a pause on Jason’s end, and you use the moment to glance at the time. 1:38 AM. Yeah, not a sane time, arguably not a completely sane person, if judging by what his family gets up to back in Gotham. “I’m downstairs.”
“I gave you a keycard and the code for the security system.”
He sighs and the sound rattles in your ear. “I know, I—I’ve been waiting for someone to come by for like 20 minutes.”
“Well, in their defense, it’s way past 1AM.” You slide your feet into your slippers and stand, turning the TV off as you go. “Normal people are usually asleep at these times. On Tuesdays, no less.”
“Yeah? And what’s your excuse?”
“I’m an occasional insomniac.” You press the phone between your shoulder and cheek as you grab the black sweater draped over the back of your couch.
Still, the hallway is cold, all exposed brick and bright overhead lights. The chill bites at your cheeks and invades through the soft wool of your sweater. Jason’s sweater? It’s hard to tell anymore; so many of his things are at your place and so many of your things are at his place. The elevator arrives with a quiet ding. Goosebumps rise on your skin as you step inside, avoiding the large wet patch on the red carpet.
You don’t let the call drop, but neither of you are speaking anymore, either. The numbers on the small screen on the elevator wall count down.
Jason is standing by the large automatic doors at the entrance of the building. He has his leather jacket slung over his arm. You can faintly make out droplets from the rain still clinging to the surface of the leather. There—just as he spots you—a smile blooms on his face, almost boyish, as he cuts across the empty foyer in long, near-silent footsteps. He wraps his arms around your waist, presses his face into the crook of your neck. His hair is damp and you feel the water slide under your collar. The tip of his nose is cold, resting over your pulse. His wet jacket presses against your side, soaking your sweater.
Instead of the chill from the fall rain, there’s a steady warmth simmering beneath Jason’s skin. It spurs from his chest and spreads to his extremities, arms wound tightly around your body, to his fingertips pressing under your sweater and into your skin.
You nearly yelp at how cold his fingers are.
“Hey.”
“Hey.”
“We gotta take two steps to the left — my left,” you clarify. Jason does not unwind himself from around you, but he does take a step to the side and then another until you can reach the elevator keypad. You tap your keycard against the sensor and hit the button for your floor. The elevator doors drag closed and it begins its ascent.
Jason’s pulse jumps and his grip around you tightens. You don’t say anything, don’t pry him off or tell him to get his shit together—instead, you place a hand on the back of his head, curl the rain-damp strands of hair around your fingers. Jason’s lips part involuntarily in a silent sigh.
“Need a haircut, eh, bub?”
He chuckles, barely audible over the jingle playing from the elevator speakers. “What if I buzz it all off? Military style.”
You make a disgusted sound in the back of your throat.
The elevator slides to a stop, the lock mechanism clicks into place, and the doors open.
“We’re here,” you say, voice soft and light.
Jason takes a long breath in, inhaling your strawberry-scented body lotion. He’s the one that got it for you as one of your many gifts last Christmas (thank you, Babs, for being his sniff-tester) and it makes him giddy to know you still use it. He untangles himself from you, not fully, though, and guides you towards your apartment, an arm around your waist.
He toes off his boots and hangs his jacket in its usual place as you re-arm the security system.
“You should really start arming that thing even if you go down for pizza or something,” he says and bends over to pick up the black ball of fur rubbing against his leg. “Hi, hi, hi, yes, hi to you, too,” he tells your cat, nuzzling his face into her fur. He looks up at you, raises a brow when you open your mouth to say ‘this is Metropolis, nothing bad happens here,’ because you’ve had this exchange twice now. “Just saying, if I was 9 again and I knew someone left their apartment full of stuff you could easily pawn unlocked…”
You sigh. “Okay. I’ll remember to do that.”
Because for Jason, it isn’t about the things in your apartment, not really.
“Thank you.”
You retreat into your bedroom and Jason carries your cat around like she’s a baby as he laps around your apartment. He stops at the tall windows in the living room and starts pointing out Metropolis landmarks as if said cat hasn’t been living in Metropolis longer than he has.
When you return, a pair of gray sweatpants and one of his shirts in hand, he’s telling your cat about how ‘Aunt Lois deserved that Pulitzer prize so much more than uncle Clark’.
“Sorry if I’m interrupting something…”
“Oh, no, no, just reinstating how Clark got a Pulitzer before Lois even though she’s a much better writer than he is.”
“Right.” You hold out the change of clothes to him. “I got you a new toothbrush; the other one was getting old.”
“Thank you.” Jason accepts the change of clothes and beelines it towards the bathroom to change, your cat still in his arms.
Once he emerges (after quite loudly announcing to your cat how one should brush their teeth), his damp clothes left in the dryer to run first thing in the morning, you’re already nestled between the sheets. There’s an extra pillow and duvet spread out next to you. Jason releases your cat, who skitters to her bed on the windowsill to watch the rain droplets race down the glass, and climbs into bed, pats his pillow until it’s of satisfactory height.
You turn off the bedside lamp on your nightstand, turn on the cat-shaped nightlight and shimmy between the sheets. Then you pause, grab your phone and unlock it.
Jason’s eyes roam your face, the curve of your nose and lips, the heaviness in your tired eyes as you slowly blink at your phone screen. He’s made an effort to commit your features to his memory so he can see your face every time he closes his eyes. So he can keep you with him everywhere. Always. So, once again, he takes his time, going over every one of your features until you lock your phone and place it back on the nightstand.
“I love you,” he says, low and soft, though with all the clarity he can inject into his words.
You stare at him for a moment, then pull your duvet up to your chin, rest your head on your pillow and close your eyes. “I love you, too.”
“Forever.”
“Forever is such a vague concept,” you tell him with a scrunch in your brow. He can barely make it out in the dim red glow of the bedroom but he knows it's there. “Until the end of the universe. And even then you’ll be stuck with me. Like glitter.”
“Yeah? When’s that?”
“We’ll reincarnate an infinite amount of times between now and then,” you say with the certainty of someone who’s gazed far into the future, gazed at the very death of the universe itself. Maybe you have. Maybe you’re a meta—a true meta—unlike him, something that crawled out of his grave in Gotham.
Jason blinks, allows your statement to settle into the marrow of his bones, into his very being. His blood thrums in his veins. He balls his hands into fists to stop them from shaking. “I don’t know; sounds a lot like forever.”
You make a sound at the back of your throat again. It is not a sound of displeasure, nor a sound of agreement, either. “Again; vague. The eventual death of the universe is all but guaranteed; it’ll expand too much and become too cold to inhabit. Probably. There’s like… six different big theories on how the universe will end. Take your pick.”
“But we’ll find each other every time.” It is not a question. Still, you nod.
“Yes. Every lifetime.”
“Promise?”
You open your eyes, take him in—you can barely make out his features in the dark but you can—the mass of dark hair splayed out across his (your) pillow, the curve of his nose and that of his cupid’s bow, the almost milky whiteness of his eyes. This is where your heart has settled. This is home.
“I promise.”

cw: stalking, obsessive behavior, voyeurism, hector generally being a freak Reed's life is charmed by the wonders of modern technology. Automated smart functions seem to learn their every move, schedule, and desire. It’s almost as if a guardian angel is looking out for them. A superstitious, but not unwelcome, thought.
The only complaint they have are the security cameras, and the countless clips of themself they don't remember saving...
Reed regards the rainbow welcome mat under their feet impassively. Welcome! It screams in a riot of cheerful, optimistic color. It could stay, they suppose. It was a little friendlier than they really felt, though. They wave the key fob over the apartment door and it unlocks with a commercialized jingle, a sound designed to be pleasant but which will surely become grating within a week. The apartment itself is exactly what they were imagining. Lovely, at first glance, but painfully artificial under any real scrutiny. The air smells like new carpet, a faint, lemony cleaning solution, and new paint. The universal scent of uninhabited.
A large, brandless tv sits in the middle of the living room, a pristine popcorn bowl for decoration only on the coffee table. A sanitized staging of the concept of living. The mattress is thin, the plates and bowls are all an atrocious lime green that pops in the cabinet the way an interior designer would love, but will make any real food look anemic. Generic, abstract wall art keeps the place from feeling like a prison, at least. A large floor-length mirrored closet door in the bedroom feels a little suggestive for a clean, corporate unit, but there it is, reflecting the empty room back at them.
The closet has a couple generic white button ups hanging on two of the five total provided hangers. The bathroom mirror is defaced with a small decal in the corner “Hello, gorgeous!”. Reed snorts, their reflection unimpressed. The couch is stiff and angled down, as if it can't wait for you to go.
And then there’s the smart features. Reed was given the spiel about Validivia’s top-of-the-line housing: premier security features and an expansive internet of things. Sensors, monitors, and bluetooth connections on anything and everything you could think of. Even the tub could be turned on and the water temperature maintained from halfway around the globe. There was a camera in every room except the bathrooms, including one built into the fridge itself that looked in on its contents. Sensors on every window and door notified them if they were open or not and motion sensors and timers in every room controlled the lights. Even just walking around and taking in the surroundings, their tv automatically switched on, showing a muted, high-saturation slide show of the property.
It certainly felt expensive, but there were spots that rubbed like a pair of designer shoes. Fine to show off, but could they bear to be here for long? They didn’t have much of a choice, and it beat having to search for an apartment and living on an air mattress until they could afford anything else. Reed has a bad habit of making impulsive cross country moves when things get boring, but after the third time they hopped into their mid-size SUV and took to the road with nothing but their bags, it lost its appeal. This last trip stopped feeling spontaneous and free spirited about halfway through. No, this most recent move felt freeing only on the late night drives. Once the sun had come back up and they were here, well, it turned out to still be the same life in a different apartment.
For practicality’s sake though, Reed is grateful, really. And so is their bank account. Which is also why they still have to clock in for the better part of their move-in day. Their suitcase is deposited in the bedroom and their laptop perched in its spot of honor on their desk. A small framed photo of a pug that looks suspiciously AI generated is promptly shoved into a drawer.
Reed is greeted by a flood of messages from the new guy. He had been hired at nearly the same time, but where Reed could easily figure out the honestly simple functions of a middle management position, their subordinate, Martin, always seems to be lost and in distress. Sometimes he sends streams of barely comprehensible IM’s. This time, as Reed sinks back into their flimsy office chair, it seems that he has ranted himself all the way to a solution all on his own. They huff a life and a smile,
Great job! It looks like you’ve really got a handle on it.
Office speak. It’s easy. Boring. Safe. About as interesting as the AI pug hidden in their desk. Reed is very good at it. It makes the person that drove overnight to get here with the windows down and the air whipping their hair around cringe, but hey, that’s life.
After a few hours of following up, circling back, and scheduling a power hour for next week, the clock rolled over to 4:30 pm and they pushed back from the desk with a groan. The chair was hell. Reed twists themselves left and right and stretches when they stand, their spine popping in protest. It would just have to be an adjustment because they can’t afford to upgrade it anytime soon.
It only takes a few weeks for Reed’s furnished life to work itself into a comfortable, numbing groove. They even begin to find things about the apartment that they enjoy. The AC is incredibly consistent, for one. They knew that there are thermostats out there now that could change on a clock or learn your schedule, but this one has picked up on their habits scarily fast. It also seems to automatically adjust to the odd scorcher of a day without them even having to lift a finger. Their window sensors also learned that they like to open them in the afternoon, just to keep the place from getting too stuffy, and if they don’t get to it in time the home app rings its little bell at them.
The list of niceties goes on. When they run low on coffee creamer, the screen on the fridge populates a virtual sticky note with the warning. Holidays would approach and the sticky notes’ little AI personality would recommend turkey, calling their mother, and taking time to rest. It feels strangely personal for corporate attempts at familiarity, but the reminders are helpful. Maintenance always seems to show up just on time to change air filters, check the fire extinguishers, and clean the windows. The automatic vacuum robot has stopped running first thing in the morning, when Reed is hosting their team meetings, after just one cancelled run. After that, it started to wake itself up at noon, when they take their lunch break, instead. For someone who works at home, these little tasks being automated and lifted from their mental load is, as dramatic as it sounds, freeing. It’s almost as if a guardian angel is looking out for them. A superstitious, but not unwelcome, thought.
The only complaint they have are the security cameras. Every now and then they’d send phantom notifications. Their app will light up, but when they open it, it’s gone. The streams are always low quality to the point of pixelation, if they don’t just freeze and jump completely. Tapping into the settings reveals the likely culprit. The cloud storage seems to have countless clips. None more than 15 minutes or so, and none that are too embarrassing, thank goodness. Just scrolling through the thumbnails reveals that they go back to when Reed first moved in and were likely an auto clipping feature that bugged. A couple catches their eye, and after patiently sitting through the lag, they’re able to watch a few.
3 minutes long, in the evening: Reed is dusting the apartment with music blasting over the sound system. They’re singing along where they know the words, making up the lyrics where they didn’t, and sounding awful the entire time.
5 minutes, morning. Reed doesn’t see anything at all. When they turn their volume up, they realize they must be in the bathroom and getting ready for the day. A place none of the cameras can see. They hear their own voice echoing down the hall. “No, mom - I know. I know. I don’t know what I’m waiting on either. If you’re so worried about it, why don’t you just pick someone out for me, hm? I’m sure they’ll be perfect. No, really. Go ahead.”
They cringe at this memory, snapping at their mom for asking why they were still single. It wasn’t fair to ask, but it wasn’t fair for them to talk to her like this, either. They move, unable to bear the rest of that conversation, but wonder they wonder why this one was clipped. The rest look like they may have been triggered by motion, but this one only features a perfectly still room. Perhaps the windows were being blown around?
15 minutes, also in the evening, just the day after: They’re making pancakes for dinner, leaning close to the edge of the pan to pick the edge of the pancake up just enough to check if it was done on the underside before flipping it. They’re mumbling to themselves.
“Just one date, ya know? You could do it. It’s been ages, but you’re not old tech. Dating is dating. They didn’t come up with new rules while you’ve been out, and if they did, you’ll just have to find somebody that’s outdated, too…”
Also Embarrassing, but could be worse. Odd that it happens to be the perfect continuation from the last clip, too.
The rest seem to be other innocuous moments in their life. Crying during a movie. Reading a book with the windows open, leaning their head back when the clouds parted and the sun landed on them. That night they started and abandoned learning origami. They’re… sweet. Oddly. Like the most mundane and boring scrapbook. Each video seems so intentional. The more they look at the ends and beginnings of each they feel a flicker of something uncomfortable, a sense of being perceived pricks at them. They glance up to their living room camera, feeling another chill before dismissing the feeling.
They chastise themselves for being paranoid and tell themselves to be thankful for this. It would be a shame to delete them all. They compromise on finding a way to offload them onto another hard drive or something. Not like they need to watch the cameras when they are home all the time, anyway.
Another surprise of their new life: in all of its supercorp moral complexity, a gift from Valdivia. They had never worked for a company that even pretended to be concerned about their employees before. After a visit to the office, Reed complains off-handedly about how awful their desk chair is at home, adding, “and the damn cameras. They’re basically useless.” Their team sympathizes with the chair, saying many of the ones in the office itself are similar. While they discuss the adrenaline pumping hoys of corporate furniture, their manager, Celia, passes them a sticky note with a phone number that just says “Security”.
“It’s been on my desk since I started oh, I don’t know, five years ago or so?” she explains with a shrug. “I don’t even know if that number goes anywhere anymore, but it’s worth checking. Maybe they can help you out with your cameras. I’ve never had an issue with mine, but you know, those have been in that building for god knows how long. Oh, and about that chair. You know how Validivia is, sometimes things just... show up. Good luck with it.” She gives a warm, if quick, smile and wishes the team a good evening.
True enough, within the next couple of weeks Reed’s doorbell chimes and their phone lights up with the stream from the front door’s camera. The view was completely obscured by a box with a scuffed black and white photo of a high backed office chair printed on the exterior. It was heavy, and takes some time to put together, but is worth every stripped screw and pinched finger. The high back and leather held them as if apologizing for how that other, awful, low down mesh chair had treated them. Maintenance even comes by the very next morning to pick up the old one.
And things are, more or less, fine. A year went by. Two. The rainbow welcome mat out front had faded to a grungy sort of pastel with time and dust. They stop texting the friends from the last town they had lived in. They barely start texting new ones in this town. Their ex finally stops calling them, and their mom has given up on her matchmaking efforts. They consider getting a cat, but feel that staying cramped in this apartment all day for the rest of its life would be cruel. No, better they get adopted by a family with a yard, or a fancy catio. Reed worries for nothing, but they don’t get excited for anything, either. Work never has any complications outside of the minorly irritating, and even those always seem to simply fix themselves without much added effort.
And that’s exactly what grates them. This quiet, lonely little routine they felt married to. It was always hard to make friends in a new town, but Reed struggles to even want to try. A couple outings with coworkers, sure. They’re always so controlled and stiff. Tongue in cheek jokes about getting soooo out of control off of the standard 1.5 drinks. Hobby groups could be a solution, but that’s not really who they are, is it? Someone who plays boardgames willingly or wakes up at 6:00 am on the weekday to fit int he perfect hike. No, none of that tempts them at all.
That itch is coming back. It tells them to send out resumes, to throw caution to the wind, to pick up and just… leave. They could take to the road again and… then what? Fourth time’s the charm? They make good money here, their apartment is affordable for what it is and has amazing features, and no matter where they go, there they would be. Bored and alone. Again. Weekends come and go and they realize they never once left their apartment. They only have themselves to blame when they are eating dinner alone, again.
It doesn’t seem right to muss the table settings just for themselves. They stand at the kitchen counter, only the quiet clink of their fork on the plate and the hum of the AC making noise. They scroll through their phone, mindlessly clearing out old photos. For the past two years they had been painfully practical. Log in, photos of their license and insurance cards. Their license plate. A screenshot of a plate set that wasn’t lime green that they considered buying, and then forgot to. They came by one of a sticky note. “Security.” And a phone number. Oh yeah. Two years ago? No telling how bad that cloud storage is now. Oh well. No better time than the present. They bite their fork between their teeth to free their other hand and plug the number into their phone and type.
Hey, you got a minute?
They switch apps, finish their dinner, and while drying the same plate they use everyday hear their phone vibrate.
How did you get this number?
From my sup, Celia. She said I should reach out about issues with my security cameras?
Do you have any idea what you're doing?
The words feel sharp and accusatory. Reed’s stomach tightened, but they know how to be professional.
My apologies! Is this the emergency line? If you give me your main office number and hours I’ll follow up with them tomorrow.
The typing bubble appears, disappears, then appears again. It moves for a long, long time. Reed puts their phone down, annoyed and ready to forget the whole thing. Just as they turn to walk away, it vibrates again.
Wait.
Okay, fine. Reed stops, sends another brief message, and waits.
Standing by.
Another long pause.
You can message this number. But not tonight. Not like this. We will talk tomorrow, I’ll be ready then.
Reed reads the last text, then reads it again. Not like this? Must be an after hours thing. Would the same person still be working tomorrow morning? That’s a hell of a shift. Then again, maybe it was just some weirdo and the number had been changed long ago.
By the time Reed makes it to bed, they notice the lights in the bathroom and kitchen are still on. Weird, they normally turn themselves off by now. Right as they were planning to ask about their cameras, too. Reed gets back up and walks barefoot across the apartment to shut them off themselves, trying to not feel terribly spoiled by the inconvenience.
When they finally laid down again, they reread the strange message one last time, the words glowing pallid and blue in the dark. A feeling they didn’t want to name, not fear really, but a deep and unsettling curiosity settles over them. Before they can follow this, the first interesting thing to happen in their life in two years, a chill overtakes them as the temperature begins to drop. They set their phone on its wireless charger and pull their blankets higher up to their chin, putting it out of their mind for the evening.

A/N: okay it's sort of short and a bit shit and i played around with the dynamic so it might seem off xx thanks @beforeyougo-turnthebiglightoff you absolute legend for finding the titles for my blurbs by scouring the 1975's discography based off my extremely vague parameters❤️

Your head is throbbing, the beat of the shitty house music still echoing in your skull even twenty minutes later. Matty is hanging on your arm, weighing you down as he rambles on about how shit the drinks were, and that you shouldn't have bothered going out in the first place. He was right, the diluted alcohol and trashy EDM ruining a perfectly good sunday night, better spent at an actual club instead of some random blokes house.
Matty’s hands grip your back as you push the front door open, keeping his balance as the platform boots he had borrowed from you made it quite difficult to walk normally. The light in the foyer automatically comes on, the fancy motion sensors painting the space in a warm glow, casting a shadow over the unorganized pile of shoes on the floor.
His hands run up your sides as you toe your heels off, tugging your dress down when it rides up, lace scratching the skin of your thighs. Your choice of attire this evening was a tight bodycon dress, red lace details adorning the neckline and bottom hem, a pretty contrast against the black fabric, clinging to your body like a second skin. Matty’s mouth fell open when he saw you slip it on, adjusting its straps in the floor length mirror in your bedroom.
“Look so pretty tonight, love this dress on you.” he mumbled as his eyes raked up and down your body, drinking you in.
The party was a flop, both of you promising never to go to that specific house ever again, also deciding to better stay clear of the friend that had extended the invite.
Since you arrived, his hands were always on some part of your body, whether they were wrapped around your waist, resting on your lower back, or intertwined with yours, his thumb rubbing small circles into the back of your hand.
Matty leans down to press a kiss to your glossed lips, a peck quickly transforming into his fingers weaving into your hair, pulling you against him. You give into his touch, your bodies flush as he pushes you backwards in the direction of the living room, your knees hitting something wooden.
“Just- yeah, this is better.” he says as he seats you down onto his posh little decorative chair, the wood smooth against the back of your thighs. Matty’s favorite piece of furniture was a oak wood sitting room chair, the armrests cared to look like trees and flowers, painted in pretty pastels. You always found it a bit morbid, seeing as a tree had died to create it, and painting its living counterpart onto a corpse wasn't really to your taste.
His lips are hot against yours, tongue licking into your mouth with fervor as you sigh into the kiss, letting your eyes droop closed. Your breathing is heavy, chest heaving against his as he leans over you, dominating the kiss. It felt odd, him above you while you let him kiss you, not the other way around. Lost in your thoughts, you don't even notice one of his hands stop touching you.
The click is impossible loud as you feel a cool sensation on the skin of your wrist. Your eyes snap open, landing on Matty first before dragging down to your left hand, a pair of handcuffs coming into view. It takes a few seconds for it to actually click. Handcuffs. Matty had handcuffs, and they were on you, also on the armrest. Wait, what?
Matty chuckles at your confusion, taking the opportunity to reach into his back pocket, pulling out another pair, snapping them onto your right wrist before you could even react properly.
“What the fuck- Matty?” you sound a bit panicked, tugging at the restraints, not really understanding the purpose of his actions. That was, until you see a filthy smirk spread onto your boyfriend's face.
“Let me out, I swear to fucking god. I don't care what you are playing at.” you resort to immediately throwing around threats, the feeling of being trapped overwhelming you. All he does is watch you struggle, a mischievous expression on his face.
He presses a finger to your lips, shushing you condescending as cures spill from your lips, the metal of the handcuffs harshly digging into your skin.
“In a bind?” he taunts, his hand stroking your face as you glare at him, not liking the lack of control you possessed. It felt strange, your eyes searching his for a hint of humor, maybe this was a prank? A crude joke to rile you up, his incessant need for attention always finding new, innovative ways to get it from you.

Things in life are not suppose to suck. We, collectively as a society, have gotten really good at addressing specific things in life that suck and making them suck less. This is a bunch of Man Centric issues that i just though was an sucky part about being A Man that actually have solutions.
Facail hair is a lottery. it can come in fully by 15 or 25. My brother had a full beard by 16 the same year i was struggling to grow much of anything past peach fuzz at 19. now he has to shave his neck every other day while i can get away without shaving at all for 3-4 days and only end up with a 5'oclock shadow of a goatee. while on the subject.....
Growing a beard/mustache is not suppose to be physically uncomfortable. if you find that you cant stand having facial hair that goes past setting 3 or 4 on a trimmer because its just Uncomfortable all the time, you need to start using a Beard Oil of some kind. Its basically conditioner for your beard. its easy to try, just apply it once a day, and its less then 10$ for a bottle that will last quite a while
If your chafing your balls all the time you should consider changing your underwear. And i dont mean like change it once a day. Boxer briefs are the middle ground. they provide the much of the same sack support that briefs do but move the leg hole (and leg hole seam) down the thigh. try out a different set for a few weeks and see if you notice a difference. i switched from briefs to boxer briefs and i have not looked back

The lock is broken.

On the other side of Gotham, Delta Iordanu stares out the window of her apartment. Long fingers curl in heavy blackout curtains as she tugs them closed once she's sure he's gone, sighing quietly. Catching the attention of another vigilante won't be good… her only saving grace is that the Red Hood isn't above killing, so she may be able to bargain with him. Killing one vigilante would bring the others running, and she'd really rather not deal with the fallout.
It's early the next morning when she leaves for work, tucking her knife into the waistband of her jeans. She doesn't usually bother with it in her civilian life, but after being followed home last night she'd rather not take her chances. She knows she's being followed as soon as she steps outside, but she doesn't acknowledge it — he'll either reveal himself to her or he won't.
He stays about a block back as he follows her, walking slower than feels natural to him. In the morning light he can see her much better, and the first thing he notices is that she's tall, taller even than he is. Watching her open the doors to the Gotham Aquarium grants him a glimpse of tattooed skin when the sleeves of her leather jacket shift, and her glance over her shoulder reveals her dark eyes and darker makeup. Her gaze flicks right over him and for a split second he feels more worried than he has on the job for years.
It's a few hours later, a few hours of watching her tend to tanks and occasionally crouch to speak to a child in short but surprisingly gentle sentences, when he follows her into an empty hallway. Again, she moves too quickly for him to react, pinning him to the wall with a knife to his throat. Her eyes catch the light in a distinctly inhuman way and he'd swear her teeth are sharper than they were mere moments ago.
"Why are you following me, Red Hood?" Despite the knife she has pressed to his throat, her affect is flat and she sounds completely unaffected.
"I don't know what you're talking about," he says immediately, watching the way her eyes flash.
"Yes, you do," she returns, head tilting as she looks down at him. "You followed me home, and you followed me here, and I'd like to know why."
"I'm not Red Hood," he lies.
"Bullshit. Why are you following me?" She presses the knife a little tighter to his throat, still not quite drawing blood, and he gets a glimpse of sharp teeth as she bites out a sigh.
"I'm not answering that."
"So you admit that you're following me?" She quirks an eyebrow, flicking her knife closed and taking a half step backwards. He finds himself missing the way she had him pinned to the wall, and immediately dismisses the thought to unpack later — or not at all. "You'd be more comfortable in your helmet," she deduces, tilting her head. "Meet me at the docks tonight, we'll talk then. I have to get back to work." Without another glance at him, she turns on her heel and sets off down the hall, leaving him standing there, once again, for longer than he'd care to admit.
