One thing I find really interesting about the Merlin fandom is that a lot of us explicitly ignore some of the show’s magical rules in fanfiction when pertaining to Merlin. Like, every other character is bound by these rules, but not Merlin. Merlin is the most powerful sorcerer (Warlock) ever. He is magic incarnate and will never run out of magic, and this is explicit in the show, that’s true. He will live forever.

But we take it and we take some of the hints the show gave us and we decide that all this power means that Merlin can break the rules. No one can create magical life without also taking it… except Merlin. That’s what a lot of the fandom decides when they write him, but he also doesn’t know that, so he can’t just bring people back to life, because he doesn’t think he can.

But we know he can.

We’ve seen him create life from nothing, and yeah, they were small instances and the creators probably didn’t fully understand what they were getting themselves into with them, but they exist.

Merlin can create flowers and butterflies and turn stone to life from nothing. Real physical little things. By the laws of the show that shouldn’t be possible, but he does it, over and over again. We learn in the poisoned chalice that conjuration magic is incredibly difficult with the afnac and Giuas’ words. But Merlin does it easily.

And it makes sense that he can. He has infinite power, infinite energy. If anyone else tried to pour enough of themselves into nothing to make life, it would take a lot of power, probably enough to kill them or someone else, hence the need for a life for a life. That energy has to come from somewhere.

Unlike all of the others, Merlin can just pour enough of himself out to make life and be fine, because he is literally everything.

And I think it’s really interesting that basically the entire fandom knows this and often makes other characters comment on it, while Merlin is just vibing with no idea.

I read a merlin prompt that was like what if merlin worked more actively towards bringing magic back and now its stuck in my head.

Like imagine merlin is still Arthur's servant still protects him and all but the committing treason bit is more focused. He still cares for Arthur ofc he does because its Arthur and Merlin but those are his people being killed being harmed in Camelot, his people being burnt on the pyre and so starts him actively trying to bring magic back and some things that go directly against the good of the Camelot. (especially especially against Uther) Something something along the lines of the system not needing fixing rather needing to be completely shattered and merlin working on doing just that. caring about Arthur but not the monarchy not the pendragon rule

Merlin still cares for Arthur still loves him but his people deserve to be free but it's Arthur but it's a whole community of magic users and magic creatures there was never really a choice.

Both of them are head over heels for each other and the reveal gets much more angsty for Arthur because the betrayal is deeper this time the treason isn't merlin doing magic to protect him but the treason is merlin actively trying to bring Uther's (and Camelot's) downfall

Basically it goes like

"I trusted you with my life and you went behind my back"

"They are MY people Arthur. My kin my family that your family has been burning on the pyre."

And Arthur gets real quite and goes "I would have helped merlin all you had to do was ask"

Like merlin choosing his people over Arthur and it breaking both their hearts

I need to talk for a second about Princess Mithian and her comment to Merlin: “One thing I’ve learned since being here is Arthur values your opinion above almost all others.”

When she said this, I was shocked. Not because I don’t agree (because of course I do), but because she’d been there such a short amount of time and honestly, Arthur isn’t very nice to Merlin in this episode. Especially in front of Mithian.

It’s not as if Mithian said, “I can tell he’s fond of you” or something like that. She specifically said he values his opinion the most. Out of everyone. A servant.

So it really makes me wish I could watch that episode from her perspective because what did she see? Was it all off camera? Did Arthur speak about Merlin whenever they were together with an absurd amount of affection? Did she watch the way he looked at him? How did she come to that conclusion?

More evidence that Arthur is extremely bad at hiding his affections for Merlin in front of everyone except Merlin.

This is my hot take on this

New concepts of Merlin’s magical abilities I would love to see in fanfics and headcanons:

1. Any person who drinks a bit of Merlin’s blood gains the ability to use magic. The show states magic is learned, people study for years to learn how to practice magic, only some people are born with a natural aptitude towards it. By drinking Merlin’s blood anyone can suddenly use magic, even if they never studied it before, but they’ll still have to learn how to control it.

2. Merlin can’t die by drowning, he can breathe under water for a longer time than an average human, but if water gets inside his lungs and he can’t breathe he will go into a dormant state until his lungs are cleared again, it could be hours, days or years (or centuries), he will always regain consciousness once he can breathe again.

3. Merlin can only be killed by weapons forged by magic or by the complete destruction of his body (like burning), if there’s even the smallest possibility of his body being healed, it will heal. Merlin does die from other common factors, but he comes back again. For example, if he’s given a deadly poison or stabbed by a common weapon, his heart will stop and he’ll die, then in a few minutes his heart will restart and he’ll live again. But every time he dies and revives, he’s a little less himself, like some parts are chipped away.

4. Merlin can build resistance to poison. Once he comes in contact with a certain poison he’ll become immune to it’s effects. Based on the previous concept, once Merlin learns he won’t permanently die from poison, he starts experimenting with various ones, his heart stops but he eventually comes back to life and heals from it’s effects, from then on he’ll be unaffected by it if he ever comes in contact with the poison again.

5. Merlin can enter the mind of animals at will, perceive the world through their senses and control their actions (like warging from ASOIAF). For example, while camping outside, he could enter the mind of a owl during the night and keep watch through it’s eyes while his actual body rests.

If anyone has other concepts and headcanons about Merlin’s magic and/or immortality I would love to know them too! Also english is not my first language, sorry if there’s any mistakes.
