You sigh as you look at the email on your laptop received from your office.
Good morning (Reader), your extended maternity leave/remote work is now over, and you must report back to the office on (mm/dd/2025). Please arrive at work in your usual business casual attire and with your ID badge displayed.
Your mind raced with multiple thoughts. How were you going to tell your husband? You had just discussed with him the thought of returning to the office when your daughter was around a year old, but he quickly dismissed the idea. He wanted you to quit and be a full-time mom and wife.
Your marriage had taken a turn for the worse after you gave birth to your daughter six months ago. You were busy nurturing and taking care of your daughter while your husband worked and constantly came home at late hours. You thought nothing of it as he always came home late, until one night.
You were woken up by the sound of your front door slamming shut. You quickly turned to your daughter’s bassinet, which was next to your bedside, and looked over to see her sleeping face. You slowly got out of bed, headed out of the room to see your husband staggering around the living room. It was clear that he was intoxicated.
Your eyes scan his body; he was still in his work clothes, eyes bloodshot, and his hair was in disarray. “The fuck are you looking?” He shouted. You let out a small gasp, standing by the entryway of the hallway. “I was just wondering what you were doing…and why you’re so loud at three in the morning,” he leans on the small accent table by the couch, clearly under the influence. “Oh, now you worry about me! You haven’t given me any attention since that girl was born—”
“She’s not just my daughter, she’s yours too, and you haven’t done a single thing for her!” You yelled at him.. You were exhausted, your daughter kept you up a lot more than usual, and now, with the news from your job, you were almost reaching your breaking point.
“You’re her mother, you take care of her, not me! This is exactly why… never mind, I’m going back out again.” He bounced off the table, heading towards the door when you grabbed his arm, “No! Tell me what you wanted to say. That’s why you what?” Your grip on his arm tightened. His brows furrowed, eyes now filled with anger as he snapped.
He turned to you, grabbing you by your arms, pushing you against the door, “I’ve been having an affair!” His speech still slurred a little, and his head leaned towards yours. You froze, mind still processing what your husband just blurted out. You couldn’t believe your ears. He’s been cheating.
You tried to speak, but the words never came as your chest tightened, eyes filling with tears. Were you that neglectful of him that he had to go and find someone else? You thought you were doing the right thing by taking care of your daughter, loving her, nurturing her, and making sure the house was clean and well-kept when he came home.
The house was quiet, your soft hiccups filling the air as tears streamed from your eyes. “Why…Why would you do that? You could have just said something, I-I would have done something! Anything!” You tried your best to stay composed, but you failed. Tears falling down your face, his eyes filled with no remorse, he didn’t care about your sadness. He was just thinking of his satisfaction.
You tried to move away from him, his body still blocking your path as you heard your daughter’s cries from the bedroom. “Please…she needs me.” You hung your head in shame and sorrow, as you still didn’t understand why he did what he did. He scoffed as you moved to the side, allowing you to go to her. You raced to your daughter’s bassinet, consoling her as you silently cried for the rest of the night.
He didn’t come back that night or the day after.
You sat in your car in the parking lot of the new daycare you enrolled your daughter in, contemplating on if this was a good idea or not. Today, you had to go back to work, so you knew she’d have to be placed in the care of someone else. You didn’t trust your husband to take care of her as he’s never even changed her diaper. She solely depended on you for her care until now.
You had done your research, background checks, and everything. Nothing out of the ordinary stood out. Of course, you just blamed it on being a new parent and not wanting your baby to be mistreated. You looked in the backseat to find her sound asleep. Not aware that you were leaving her for the first time since she was born.
You sighed as you got out of the car, making your way to the backseat, unbuckling her from her car seat. You grabbed her bag and headed inside. You dreaded the moment you handed her over to the worker. “Don’t worry, Miss, Emi will fit right in. She’ll be fine, we’ll call if anything comes up!” The worker reassures.
You give a faint smile as you head out, looking back at your sleeping child’s face. You felt a bit guilty, wondering if she’ll feel betrayed or not when she wakes up and sees you’re not there.
Later that day, you’re at your desk when a stack of papers hits your desk. Your supervisor stands in front of you, “Clearly, you were slacking at home. You haven’t gotten an ounce of these papers done yet, and we’re reaching a deadline!” She crosses her arms, clearly dissatisfied with your work.
“Don’t make me have to report you to Mr. Nanami.” Speaking of the devil, the CEO walks into the office, his cold demeanor hits the office space immediately, as everyone freezes up as she walks past in a black tailored suit, hair always in the slick back style. “G-Good morning, Mr. Nanami!” Your supervisor bowed. He stopped next to her, side eyeing her before his eyes peered over to you. You try to avoid contact with him until he clears his throat, “I need to see you in my office.”
“F-For wha—” he dismissively cut you off with a wave of his hand. “I’ll see you in five minutes.” He walked away, heading towards his office. You turned back to your supervisor, who was still bowing until you tapped on your desk, signaling that he was gone. “Whatever you did, it must be pretty bad for him to call you in there—whatever, though, good luck!” Her expression gave that of someone who was just glad it wasn’t her on the chopping block. She paced away from you, almost tripping over her feet as she made her way back to her desk.
Minutes later, you arrive at his office, gently knocking on the door, waiting for his approval to enter. “Come in,” you heard him speak as you swiftly opened the door. Nanami was sitting at his desk, pen in hand, as he was briefly tapping it against the surface of his desk. “This is your first day back after giving birth. Congratulations, I can’t imagine the workload of motherhood and trying to take on a full-time job.” You looked at him, surprised at his kind words; he was always cold and short with his words. “T-Thank you, sir—”
“However…you are behind on your work, and I’ve extended the deadline for you as much as I can. At the end of the week, I need those papers submitted or else you’ll be written up, no excuses, no exceptions. You can leave now.” Without a second thought, he turned to his computer, leaving you dumbfounded as you stood in front of him, trying to process the information given.
He gives you a brief side eye as you leave his office, under more stress now than ever. Even as he gave you this strict deadline, all you could think of was getting back to your baby.
Emi toothlessly smiled at you, her arms reaching out to you as you took her from the daycare worker. “Hi, my love! Did you miss Mama?” You smiled at her, kissing her on the cheek. “She was amazing, Miss! A joy to have, she was fussy a bit when she woke up, which was expected, but we were able to calm her down, and we had a good day. We also noticed she started teething, so that’s something to look out for!” You nodded at the worker, happy with the news that your little girl was able to enjoy her first day. You looked down at Emi as she had her first in her mouth, squirming a little as she tried to soothe herself. You took note of that as you headed home.
The thunderstorm outside doesn't compare to the wails of your daughter’s cries pierce the walls of your home as you bounce her around in your arms, attempting to soothe her. Your husband, who sat on the couch, watching TV, couldn’t care less about his baby crying, instead getting agitated by her cries for help.
She had started teething yesterday, and it’s been hell for you. She started to wake up more, rejected your calming approaches, just wanting her gums to calm down as her one little tooth was coming in. You felt so sorry for her, wishing to take away all of her pain. Willing to do anything to make it stop.
“Would you take that somewhere else? I’m trying to watch TV here!” Your husband spewed, slamming his hand on the armrest of the couch, beer in hand, drinking away whatever troubles he had during the day at work. “I’m sorry…she’s teething and nothing is helping right now. I-I just need your help—” “My help?” He cuts you off, “I’ve been working my ass off at work all day, and you can’t handle a crying fucking baby??” He snapped at you.
“I know you’ve been working! But she’s your child as well, and- and I’ve been at work too..I need a break…I just need you to help out with consoling her…” You try talking some sense into the man, but he isn’t hearing at of it. Instead, he throws the beer bottle at the wall near the TV, the rest of the liquid wasted on the wall and floor now as he jolts up, pacing to you and your now inconsolable child. “Your stupid desk job doesn’t compare to my eight hours of hard labor!” His anger is blinding him as he’s trying to understand why you just won’t be a good wife and shut up and shut the baby up.
You instinctively back away, now trying to avoid him. His eyes are dark, no emotions behind them. You run into your shared bedroom, quickly locking the door. “You better open this fucking door right now before I do! I’ll make you regret it, I promise you!!” He belligerently says, speech slurring as he bangs on the door.
You cradle the back of your daughter’s head, still trying to soothe her as tears appear in your eyes. “It’s okay, Emi, daddy’s just a little upset right now—”
BANG! BANG! BANG!
You scream as the door flies open, your husband charges towards you, slamming you against the wall, you gasp for air as your hands are still holding onto your daughter, trying to protect her with the little strength you have left.
He snatches Emi from you, her wailing getting louder, as if she’s begging you to save her from him. You lunge onto him, now crying as you attempt to plead with him. “Please! Don’t hurt her, please, I’m sorry!! I’ll do it alone, I promise!” You begged.
It wasn’t good enough as he elbows you hard into your stomach, causing you to drop to your knees, air being taken out of your lungs. He begins to walk away from you, still holding her, as you grab onto his leg. Still trying your best to plead with him to let her go.
He attempted to just kick you off, seeing as you weren’t letting go, he dragged you along as he headed out of the room, your fingers still attached to his pants leg, “NO!! Please let her go! I’m SORRY! I shouldn't have said anything!” You cried out, not wanting your actions to hurt your little girl.
“You should have thought of that before you got fucking disrespectful! This little shit has to go! She’s been cockblocking me twenty-four seven, and now you feel like you can do whatever you want now huh?” He spewed out, heading towards the front door.
Your eyes widening, you quickly climb up, trying to take your baby from the crazed man’s arms, but he is too powerful. He jerks you off of him, causing you to slam into the accent table by the door, falling onto the floor. You try your best to hang onto him again as he swings the door open, his arm extending as he holds her outside in the rain. “Please…I’ll do anything…” His head snapped back to you, his brow arched, “Anything?”
You lay in bed, curled up, naked, as your husband was asleep next to you. You finally gave in and gave him what he wanted. You were willing to do anything if that meant Emi would be safe, even if that meant having sex with him when you weren’t ready. You peered over to Emi, who was sleeping quietly in her bassinet. You felt your throat tighten as you were unable to come up with an excuse for your husband’s actions. You caressed your baby’s cheek, feeling the sorrow building up inside you. You didn’t want her to grow up in an abusive, toxic household. You knew you had to leave, but you didn’t know where you would go.
You looked over at your husband once more before you got out of bed, quickly walking to your dresser, pulling out a stack of clothes, underneath was a box, you grabbed it, placing it on top of the dresser as you swiftly put on a shirt and sweatpants. You grabbed a few outfits for yourself and Emi and shoved them in your backpack nearby. Every few seconds, you would look up to make sure your husband was still asleep. You would freeze every time the thunder would roar outside, fearing whether Emi or your husband would wake up, spoiling your plans.
After grabbing the essential items you needed, you quickly cradle your sleeping infant, hauling your backpack on your shoulders. You paused for a moment before looking back at your husband. The man you were in love with is no longer there. You saw a monster, a man willing to hurt an innocent baby to get his way. That's why you had to leave, not only for your safety, but for hers, too. You cautiously exit the house, afraid to knock anything over as you head towards the door, willing to leave this life behind if it means getting to safety.
You race towards your car as the rain is pouring down, you cover Emi, as you open the door to the backseat, quickly strapping her in her car seat. You place the bag down beside her before getting into the driver's seat, finally driving away from the harmful place you used to call home and the man you used to call your husband.
You had been driving for a while now. Trying to clear your mind of the guilt you had, and also trying to figure out where you would go. You noticed a motel on your left as you continued to drive, looking around the area. You didn’t want to end up in a shady place, but you needed something. You pull into the parking lot. It didn’t look entirely too run down as you grabbed a jacket sitting in the passenger's seat before reaching back into your backpack, pulling out the box you had grabbed earlier.
As you opened it, you saw the stacks of cash you had been hiding for years from your husband. You always hid this from him, afraid he’d use the money for the wrong reasons, as this money was used for emergencies only. You take a couple of bills and place them in your pocket as the rain begins to fall even harder than before. You would never leave Emi in the car alone, especially in a place like this, so you tried to wait for the rain to slacken up before heading inside.
A couple of minutes go by, and the rain is still pouring. You don’t want to wait any longer, fearing you’d only draw attention to yourself. You put on the jacket, leaving it unzipped, getting out as you wanted to get Emi out of the rain and inside the building. You race inside, meeting with the desk clerk, who was taken aback by your appearance.
You were completely drenched as you tried your best to shield Emi from getting wet. The bag on your back is even heavier now that it is wet. Your shoes squeaked as you walked up to the desk. “I need a room, please.” You took the now-soaked cash from your pocket, placing it down on the desk. “For how long?” The clerk asked, “For as long as I can with that?” You point to the cash. The clerk slowly grabbed the cash, noticing the sleeping child in your arms, not wanting to ask any further questions.
You grabbed the key from them, leaving to find your room. You look around as you try to adjust the bag on your back and check on your now awake baby. She wasn’t fussy as she was just slobbering on her fist. You get to your room, unlocking the door and immediately placing the heavy bag on the floor, your shoulders relieved from the discomfort.
You sigh heavily as you feel like you could finally relax a bit. The room was a single bedroom with a very small bathroom near the entrance. It was surprisingly clean, way better than you expected. You placed Emi on the bed. She was in her own world, babbling as she grabbed her foot, attempting to place it into her mouth. You smiled at her, glad she was at the age where she didn’t remember traumatizing events like what occurred earlier.
You changed out of your wet clothes for dry ones and switched Emi’s onesie and diaper before adjusting yourself in the newfound bed. You cradle your daughter as she drifts off to sleep after being fed. You stare across from the bed at the wall. Trying to figure out what you’re going to do from here. You weren’t going to stop working. You couldn’t now, you had to work even harder to supply a life for your daughter on top of now trying to find a new place to stay, as you knew this was only temporary.

Kinda interesting to me that those revenants (One literally being Felassan) are sitting on Qunari/Par Vollen Thrones when Qunari didn't exist back in Ancient Arlathan/Evanuris era... it might mean the Qunari were indeed created by Ancient elves using dragon blood like so many theories and codex seem to mention. :')

April 27, 2025 - Anarchist activists stormed into an office in the Athens suburb of Kallithea, overturning desks, ripping down company materials, and confronting Iraklis Bamzas, owner of Hellas Line - VresNet, after he had fired at least two workers for becoming pregnant, an act illegal under Greek labor law but rarely punished.
In footage released by the anarchist collective Rouvikonas, activists confront Bamzas directly, saying that there are many reports of him firing pregnant workers, and promising him worse if he doesn't start obeying the labor laws protecting workers.
Worker's protections are worthless if they are not enforced, so sometimes you have to go visit a company owner in person if the state isn't interested in doing its job. [video]
