As my last post for 2024 and advice going into 2025, let me implore everyone who thinks the Trump election spells nirvana for truth to sit down and listen for a minute.
First, I have zero pull or connection to MAGA or MAHA. So everyone sending me an idea or product to get the new officials’ attention, quit. I’m not in Trump’s contact list. In my bubble, without a smartphone, no apps, and no TV, I probably know less about plans and positions in the upcoming new slate of appointees than just about anyone.
Second, and this is the crux of my post today, why does anyone think their idea or product is the magic elixir fixer if the government will endorse it? Biochar, bionic foliars, worm pee, outlaw glyphosate, tax Tyson – my goodness, everyone has a magic recipe to save farming if only they could get the USDA’s attention.
I’m sorry to bear the unhappy news: 10 miles of USDA offices probably won’t change. I remember well when Barack Obama got elected and Michelle put a garden on the White House lawn. I was privy to some inside information because I knew their chef, and the stories about trying to make a beehive that could withstand rotor wash when the helicopter landed were quite entertaining.

One of my entires for the Court of Darkness Mini Design Contest won.
They made it into the Volcanic Guy mini. In the CoD app my username is Ishani Faye and on Twitter it’s also Ishani Faye.
My other entry was mini Roy in a beekeeper suit with a beehive and bees. I wish that one had won and was turned into a mini in the CoD app. But one of my entires won.
I entered a design for a Guy mini because I know people on the CoD team like Guy and they are the ones who judged the entries so I figured if I entered an entry of Guy then that entry would be more likely to win.
I also entered Lynt and Fenn mini designs but then found out it was after the contest deadline because the deadline was in a different time zone than where I am. I drew mini Lynt sitting with dandelions and mini Fenn in an eggplant costume. I started to draw Toa but the contest deadline ended before I chose a costume for him and finished sketching him.

Okay. So. My phonw broke down and i got a new one and i actually git a new new one for once - a Fairphone 5 /e/OS. It runs on a forked android version that works without sending data to google
I have two things about this phoen that bother me. The first is that its just too big. I dont like the size. But i waher i can get used to it if i like the rest. The second and worse offender is the home screen/launcher. Its just fugly. Doesnt let me move apps to the bottom of the screen or add widgets
To solve this issue I've been trying different launchers for the last few hours (gosh why) and so far I've found a lot of funny ones. One that is a pie menu. One that stacks the apps lile a beehive. One that opens apps by stroking in different directions. One that opens different apps depending on how long you press which button. All fun and games but not what i want.
I've found two that match my criteria. One crahsed immediately after i finished setting it up (its creatively called Launcher, the icon is a white house on green background). The other has a fixed google search tab at the bottom. (called Rootless Pixel Launcher, white house on blue background) Everything is customizable, except for the google search tab :l
I didnt get a degooglified phoen to have a Google search tab on my hoke screen
I told my roommate/boyfriend/friend/partner and he suggested jokingly i should just code my own launcher. And like. If i cant find a suitable launcher by tomorrow i think I'll learn proper coding for this fucking thing
#I dont wannaaaa#But if i did I'd feel pretty cool#And like the ones that were pretty good are both open source. So i could just copy most of theirs#(note to self#LaunchTime Homescreen (blue rocket white background) is decent too#Sorts apps into categories#I dont like the categories#Prinzip ist qber cool

Fury - Usyk 05.18.24
An amazing fight in Riyadh on Saturday between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury -- the former narrowly, but deservedly, taking the victory and surely vaulting himself into the conversation of greatest of all-time. A high level fight with some great looks and nice little details. Lets take a look:
Usyk went with his typical well-matched set of Ukraine colors. A great dot-point / beehive pattern, seen initially in his sweatsuit pre-fight:
A closer look at the trunks:
The design on the waistband is apparently an ancient Christian symbol.
The bee on the side of Usyk's trunks is the logo of a boxing "web3" app that was founded by Usyk himself. Logo below in yellow (from the website):
Note that the dot-points are actually beehive hexagons.
The back of Usyk's trunks featured the name Maria, the name of his newborn daughter:
Usyk wore matching Rival gloves with "UKRAINE" on one thumb and "CHAMPION" on the other:
He wore matching footwear with USYK and the bee logo:
Fury put up a great performance and had a good look himself:
He wore forest green and gold - with a bit of black, a common look for him, in a gladiator style trunks. His Paffin Sport gloves were a lighter (and mismatched) shade of green, as has been the case in many of his previous fights. He wore black and gold Nike footwear. A closer look:
You'll notice the waistband is black, as is the front flap of his gladiator trunks. The green has a great little pattern that played well off of the arena lights, glistening a bit depending on the angle.
His Paffin Sport Gloves with Gypsy King logo:
Black and gold Nikes:
Very strong looks from both men - and a historic fight.
Respect box!

*Smooth jazz, romantic reggae*
*Instrumental interlude*
*Instrumental interlude*
**[VERSE 1]**
Woke up to the birdsong
Of a world that finally learned
The factories grow wildflowers now
The smokestacks all got turned—
Into climbing vines for children
Who'll never know a "debt"
Their homework's just to wonder
And chase the sun's last breath
*Instrumental interlude*
*Instrumental interlude*
**[PRE-CHORUS]**
No apps tracking our attention
No ads in the breeze
Just the hum of friendly robots
Planting forests in the seas
**[CHORUS]**
Oh my love, it's Electric Paradise
Where the algorithms bloom
Not for profit, just for petals
And the communal living room
We're dancing in the datastream
Where the fireflies compile
Every dream that ever faded
Gets to live again awhile
*Instrumental interlude*
*Instrumental interlude*
**[VERSE 2]**
The last billionaire's a gardener
She says the soil's more fun
Her former banks are beehives now
The vaults grow everyone—
Enough strawberries to bathe in
Enough books to build a moon
The only "interest rate" we know
Is how fast the lilies bloom
**[BRIDGE]**
The ATMs sprout daisies
THE MALLS ARE GIANT TREES!
And that old Wall Street wolf?
He just herds actual sheep hee haa
*Instrumental interlude*

**[FINAL CHORUS]**
Oh my love, it's Electric Paradise
Where our hearts are subnetworks
Trading poems instead of portfolios
Building joy instead of jerks
The whole world's a gift economy
And the only "crash" we fear
Is when we laugh too hard together
And collapse in happy tears

Look around...
We finally live"

How IoT Beehive Monitoring Systems, Ant Control, and Bee Impact Shape the Future

Beekeeping has taken a technological leap with the advent of IoT Beehive Monitoring Systems, making the practice more efficient and sustainable. As beekeepers embrace modern methods, they also face age-old problems like ant invasions. Moreover, the role of honey bees in our ecosystem continues to grow more crucial, making their conservation a priority. In this blog, we’ll dive into how IoT is transforming beekeeping, share effective tips to keep ants out of beehives, and highlight the greater impact of honey bees and their evident future.
In recent years, the beekeeping industry has experienced a transformative shift driven by technology, environmental consciousness, and sustainable farming practices. Beekeepers, both commercial and hobbyist, are increasingly adopting IoT Beehive Monitoring Systems to improve efficiency and hive health. Alongside modern advancements, traditional challenges like pest control, particularly ants, remain critical. Moreover, understanding the greater impact of honey bees and their evident future is essential for environmental sustainability.
1. The Rise of IoT in Modern Beekeeping
What Is an IoT Beehive Monitoring System?
An IoT Beehive Monitoring System is a smart solution equipped with sensors and wireless communication tools that allow real-time monitoring of a beehive’s internal environment. These systems track various parameters such as:
Temperature and humidity
Hive weight (honey production)
Sound frequency (to detect queen presence or swarming)
Bee activity and movement
External weather conditions
Data is transmitted to a central hub or cloud platform, allowing beekeepers to make informed decisions without disturbing the hive.
Components of a Smart Hive System:
Sensors: For temperature, humidity, vibration, audio, CO₂, etc.
Microcontroller/Transmitter: Connects to the internet or cellular network.
Mobile or Web App Interface: Provides insights, graphs, and alerts.
Benefits of IoT in Beekeeping
Remote Monitoring: Monitor hives from your smartphone or computer.
Predictive Maintenance: Detects issues like hive overheating, swarming, or reduced bee activity.
Improved Hive Health: Keep optimal conditions for bee productivity and survival.
Data-Driven Insights: Track seasonal patterns and improve hive management.
By integrating IoT, beekeepers can reduce manual inspections, minimize hive disruptions, and ensure the wellbeing of their colonies.
2. Effective Tips to Keep Ants Out of the Beehive
Ants are a persistent nuisance in apiaries. They are attracted to the sweet scent of honey and may invade hives, robbing them of resources and causing stress to the bees.
Here are effective tips to keep ants out of your beehive:
A. Use Ant-Proof Hive Stands
Elevate your hive using stands with moat-style legs filled with water or oil to block ant access.
Ensure that nothing bridges the moat, such as tall grass or debris.
B. Apply Sticky Barriers
Wrap the hive stand legs with sticky tape or petroleum jelly to create a physical barrier.
Reapply as needed, especially after rain.
C. Maintain Clean Surroundings
Avoid spills of sugar water, honey, or pollen substitutes around the hive.
Regularly clean the area to prevent attracting ants.
D. Use Natural Ant Repellents
Sprinkle cinnamon, diatomaceous earth, or coffee grounds around the base of the hive.
These substances act as natural deterrents without harming the bees.
E. Relocate Ant Colonies
Trace ant trails back to their nest and use boiling water or natural deterrents to eliminate the source.
Avoid chemical pesticides as they may harm the bees or contaminate the hive.
Combining these methods can drastically reduce ant infestations and protect your hive.
3. The Greater Impact of Honey Bees and Their Evident Future
Why Honey Bees Matter
Honey bees are essential pollinators responsible for fertilizing over 75% of the world’s flowering plants and more than a third of our food crops. Their work supports:
Agricultural productivity (fruits, vegetables, nuts)
Biodiversity by maintaining natural plant communities
Livelihoods through honey, beeswax, and pollination services
Without honey bees, the global food system would face severe disruptions.
Challenges Facing Honey Bees
Despite their importance, bee populations are declining due to:
Pesticide exposure
Habitat loss
Climate change
Diseases and parasites (like Varroa mites)
Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD)
These threats emphasize the urgent need for proactive beekeeping strategies and global awareness.
The Evident Future of Honey Bees
The future of honey bees depends on a blend of traditional practices and modern technology. Here’s what lies ahead:
Wider Adoption of IoT Monitoring Systems to detect problems early and reduce mortality.
Urban Beekeeping to increase local biodiversity and pollination.
Climate-Resilient Bees through selective breeding and genetic research.
Educational Campaigns to raise awareness about bee conservation.
Government Policies promoting sustainable agriculture and pollinator protection.
With the right approach, we can ensure a thriving future for honey bees and, in turn, for ourselves.
4. Merging Innovation with Responsibility
The beekeeping industry is evolving rapidly. While IoT Beehive Monitoring Systems offer convenience and precision, they should be complemented with responsible beekeeping practices.
By tackling challenges like ant invasions and environmental threats, beekeepers can build a sustainable and productive future. Moreover, spreading awareness about the vital role of honey bees can inspire more individuals to support conservation efforts.
The Role of IoT in Bee Conservation
Beyond farm management, IoT technologies support global bee conservation efforts:
Enable research by collecting large-scale hive data.
Improve early disease detection and reduce colony collapse.
Support citizen science hobbyist beekeepers can contribute to global databases.
Empowering Small-Scale Beekeepers
IoT tools are increasingly affordable and open-source. Beekeepers with just a few hives can:
Monitor remotely while working full-time jobs.
Get alerts for hive theft or environmental stress.
Make data-driven decisions about relocation or treatment.
5. The Importance of IoT in Modern Beekeeping
The global environment is evolving faster than ever before. From shifting weather patterns to invasive pests and widespread pesticide use, bees are increasingly under threat. Beekeepers must therefore shift from reactive to proactive beekeeping and this is where IoT becomes indispensable.
Why Traditional Monitoring Isn’t Enough
Manual inspections, while valuable, come with several downsides:
They disturb bees and stress the colony.
Inspections may miss subtle issues developing between visits.
Weather, time constraints, or remote locations can hinder inspections.
IoT monitoring systems address these issues by providing continuous, real-time data, enabling faster and more accurate responses to problems.
Preventing Colony Collapse with IoT
One of the most significant threats to bees is Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), where bees suddenly abandon the hive. By detecting early signs such as unusual temperature drops, changes in vibration, or bee inactivity, IoT systems give beekeepers critical lead time to intervene.
6. Top Benefits of IoT Beehive Monitoring Systems
Let’s explore the comprehensive benefits of integrating smart beekeeping tools:
Real-Time Alerts
Get instant notifications about:
Hive temperature/humidity spikes or drops
Sudden weight loss (indicating honey theft, swarming, or disease)
Acoustic patterns signaling queenlessness or distress
Remote Accessibility
You can monitor hives from your smartphone or laptop anywhere in the world ideal for:
Beekeepers managing multiple hives across locations
Farmers integrating pollination services
Researchers observing hives in wild or remote ecosystems
Data-Driven Decision Making
With months of data at your fingertips, you can:
Identify optimal times for harvesting
Detect seasonal behavior patterns
Compare hive health across colonies
This leads to smarter resource allocation and higher yields.
Reduced Hive Intrusions
Unnecessary inspections can cause:
Bee aggression
Queen disturbance
Loss of brood temperature control
IoT devices allow you to inspect only when needed, promoting hive stability.
Enhanced Hive Security
Some advanced IoT systems include GPS and motion sensors to detect theft or animal attacks. This is particularly helpful in rural and commercial apiaries.
Sustainability and Eco-Consciousness
IoT encourages sustainable beekeeping by:

March’s Night Sky Notes: Messier Madness
by Kat Troche of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific
What Are Messier Objects?
During the 18th century, astronomer and comet hunter Charles Messier wanted to distinguish the ‘faint fuzzies’ he observed from any potential new comets. As a result, Messier cataloged 110 objects in the night sky, ranging from star clusters to galaxies to nebulae. These items are designated by the letter ‘M’ and a number. For example, the Orion Nebula is Messier 42 or M42, and the Pleiades are Messier 45 or M45. These are among the brightest ‘faint fuzzies’ we can see with modest backyard telescopes and some even with our eyes.
Stargazers can catalog these items on evenings closest to the new moon. Some even go as far as having “Messier Marathons,” setting up their telescopes and binoculars in the darkest skies available to them, from sundown to sunrise, to catch as many as possible. Here are some items to look for this season:
M44 in Cancer and M65 and 66 in Leo can be seen high in the evening sky 60 minutes after sunset. Credit: Stellarium Web
Messier 44 in Cancer: The Beehive Cluster, also known as Praesepe, is an open star cluster in the heart of the Cancer constellation. Use Pollux in Gemini and Regulus in Leo as guide stars. A pair of binoculars is enough to view this and other open star clusters. If you have a telescope handy, pay a visit two of the three galaxies that form the Leo Triplet - M65 and M66. These items can be seen one hour after sunset in dark skies.

Messier 3 Canes Venatici: M3 is a globular cluster of 500,000 stars. Through a telescope, this object looks like a fuzzy sparkly ball. You can resolve this cluster in an 8-inch telescope in moderate dark skies. You can find this star cluster by using the star Arcturus in the Boötes constellation as a guide.
Messier 87 in Virgo: Located just outside of Markarian’s Chain, M87 is an elliptical galaxy that can be spotted during the late evening hours. While it is not possible to view the supermassive black hole at the core of this galaxy, you can see M87 and several other Messier-labeled galaxies in the Virgo Cluster using a medium-sized telescope.
Locate M76 and M31 setting in the west, 60 minutes after sunset. Credit: Stellarium Web
Messier 76 in Perseus: For a challenge, spot the Little Dumbbell Nebula, a planetary nebula between the Perseus and Cassiopeia constellations. With an apparent magnitude of 12.0, you will need a large telescope and dark skies. You can find both M76 and the famous Andromeda Galaxy (M31) one hour after sunset, but only for a limited time, as these objects disappear after April. They will reappear in the late-night sky by September.
Plan Ahead
When gearing up for a long stargazing session, there are several things to remember, such as equipment, location, and provisions:
Do you have enough layers to be outdoors for several hours? You would be surprised how cold it can get when sitting or standing still behind a telescope!
Are your batteries fully charged? If your telescope runs on power, be sure to charge everything before you leave home and pack any additional batteries for your cell phone. Most people use their mobile devices for astronomy apps, so their batteries may deplete faster. Cold weather can also impact battery life.
Determine the apparent magnitude of what you are trying to see and the limiting magnitude of your night sky. You can learn more about apparent and limiting magnitudes with our Check Your Sky Quality with Orion article.
When choosing a location to observe from, select an area you are familiar with and bring some friends! You can also connect with your local astronomy club to see if they are hosting any Messier Marathons. It’s always great to share the stars!
You can see all 110 items and their locations with NASA’s Explore the Night Sky interactive map and the Hubble Messier Catalog, objects that have been imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope.
