a half-ghost--? no- no wait, that's a changeling. that's even worse.

so i'd like to preface this by saying this stems from me going entirely off the rails thinking about tales of the passerine-- which is frankly quite on brand for me to think of one au, and then develop it so far left ways that it makes another au entirely.

bUT. Context! Danny's ancestors sometime before they immigrated to America had a fae marry into the family. This had its Side Effects. Naturally. The Fentonnightengale responsible for this charmed a fae thanks to their swagless nature and awkward demeanor, so instead of getting eaten the fae thought it was cute instead. The fae marrying into the family had an affinity for music, but that kinda repressed itself by accident -- blame the salem witch trials.

By the time Danny is born, the fae blood has become so latent that it really doesn't show up anymore other than the Fentons Eccentricity and obsession with the supernatural (a latent desire to return home to the fae realm - aka infinite realms). There's an unnatural charm surrounding the fenton that really only creeps almost every human within a visual radius, and Danny is no exception.

hoWEVEr. the accident that turned danny into a halfa in one timeline did no such thing in this one -- it just reactivated his latent fae blood, and reactivated it with a fervor. Effectively turning Danny from a human into a changeling.

Danny just thinks at first that he's a half-ghost -- only to realize later on from Clockwork that he's not one at all. He's very much fae -- which is a wild discovery for Danny to make. It also means his rogues are quite a bit more intimidated by him. Fae are above ghosts in the Infinite Realm Creature Hierarchy, no matter how powerful they are. A fae can still Steal the name of a ghost, so Danny's rogues are rather skittish/unsure around Danny until they realize he doesn't know he's a changeling -- after that, many of them vow to try and keep it secret amongst themselves.

Danny's 'ghost' form is rather birdlike, and in human form his appearance warps to match his comfortability. When he's alone with his friends he starts taking on unnatural features. -- his blue-green eyes brighten and his pupils elongate, his teeth sharpen, and his ears grow longer and animal-like. His hair softens to be more feathery, his nails sharpen. In general he takes on more 'bird-ish' features. At school, around his parents, and when he's stressed, tense, or scared, he looks completely human -- an instinctual survival mechanism.

As a ghost, he has large, pretty wings that gradient from black to dark purple-blue, with a shimmer across the feathers that resembles the aurora borealis. His limbs elongate, his legs becoming bird-like and his talons grow on both his feet and nails. His ears vaguely resemble a rabbit's, although they don't flop down like one. All his teeth sharpen. Razor sharp chompers, capable of biting through bone. His eyes take on a greenish-hue, but otherwise remain the same color, albeit his sclera becomes blue-ish and his pupils become diamond-shaped and white. Rings of seafoam blue circle around his iris, creating a reflective sheen. He makes chirping, creaking noises, and when he speaks there's a faint overlap that is very enchanting.

Overall he's rather beautiful in a terrifyingly inhuman way, its hard to take your eyes off him. He has a lot of feathers. He's very drawn to singing and music in general, and gets into music sometime after his accident. He likes flutes/ocarinas/woodwinds the most, followed shortly after by strings, and then piano. He also slowly loses the ability to lie -- which is really annoying and also terrifying until he learns how to reword himself and become a better wordsmith.

Okay but seriously, Erro's story is making me lose my fucking mind. The god of justice becoming mortal amidst an era of injustice, of not just twisted justice but a lack of it, where there is no rhyme or reason to who lives and dies, not only because of the war but also because there is nothing and no one left to enforce justice in the wake of war. There are no institutions (in the broad sense) to base any idea of justice upon, and when left to individuals to enforce in an era where survival alone is paramount, it of course falls to the wayside. There's a reason why the Platinum Dragon is a lawful deity, after all. Even a unit as small as the immediate family takes herculean efforts to maintain; the families we see in Divergence, both made and found, are scattered, torn apart, before and during this time frame. The series begins with a desperate attempt to save a family, with Fiedra orchestrating Crokas's rescue (and Erro's along with him), and even that effort could've failed had Crokas not made it out of the walls.

Of course Erro, raised to believe in the ideals of justice, loses faith. While the war rages on, there can be no justice. The scale of destruction barely leaves room for nature, let alone civilization.

Of course only in the war's wake, when the rebuilding begins, can justice become again a consideration, and it is is not innate. People must choose it, choose to prioritize it in the process of rebuilding, and not everyone does! But those who do choose it are those who Erro follows—and leads, as nothing more than a civilian, as he steps first into the fray to defend what small justice there is. All of Torm's Hill, who do step into battle in his wake. Nia, who holds faith even in loss by the bloody tips of her fingers. Crokas, who has believed he is only a monster even when he is little more than a scared child, using that belief as a weapon in defense of other scared children. Fiedra, whose ruthlessness is turned against the continued stirrings of injustice when her instinct would have urged her to join them. Garen, who remains until the end nothing more than a stone-carver, choosing to build even after recognizing when it is necessary to destroy.

Erro did not lose faith in the ideals of the Platinum Dragon—he lost faith that those ideals could survive the era in which he was born, an era that, in another form, he had helped shape. And in this form—a lonely wanderer, no better than any other traveler along the road—he saw those ideals rekindled, by the people who choose to pick up the torch. Only in knowing that that torch would be carried after he, Erro, was gone, was the Platinum Dragon able to keep faith that the world that he was leaving behind could become a better one in his wake.

i find it so so interesting the things that you can learn about a parent/caregiver just by knowing their kid...

when siffrin doesn't flinch away from bonnie's touch, bonnie says "good kid, good kid. you didn't even jump that time! good job, you did such a good job.” now we know what kind of langauge nille uses to praise bonnie!

bonnie doesn't actually argue all that much about not being allowed to fight - they make their opinion known, but then focus on being a good snack leader. i think they are used to having their point of view taken into consideration! a kid who doesn't dare complain at all might have very strict and stubborn caregivers, while a kid who throws a fit might have caregivers who pay more attention to emotions than logic, or care less about their child's feelings and more about how those feelings affect them. but bonnie trusts that the adults around them will listen to them, and then make a reasonable decision, even if it's not the one they wanted.

bonnie's fairly level-headed in general, actually. they get really upset sometimes, obviously, but it's about things that are really upsetting? otherwise.. if they're not confronted about the death convo, they're able to set it aside and focus on cheering everyone up with snacks. even though they're mad at siffrin, they have some chill convos with him. pretty good emotional regulation skills all things considered! they're often able to choose to be calm and cheerful, but they feel safe expressing sadness and anger, too, so they're not just sitting there repressing everything either!

i just get really emo about what a good job nille must have done raising them 😭

omg i love this question so much! finding your signature elements is literally one of the most fun parts of building your personal aesthetic. it's like creating your own character design for the main character (you!).

i spent years feeling like i was just collecting random pretty things without any real cohesion. then i realized that having intentional signatures makes you memorable and gives you this sense of identity that feels so grounding. so here's my process for finding yours!

this one's actually more intuitive than people make it seem! start by noticing:

what color do you naturally gravitate toward when shopping?

which color consistently makes you feel confident when you wear it?

what color are most of your favorite items already?

which color feels like "you" even if you can't explain why?

for me it's a specific shade of light pink (surprise surprise). i noticed i kept buying everything in this color without even realizing it. your signature doesn't have to be just one color though! it could be a palette of 2-3 colors that work together.

pro tip: once you find it, add little touches of your color everywhere - phone case, water bottle, bookmarks. it creates this subtle cohesion in your life that feels so satisfying.

this one is so powerful because scent ties directly to memory! people will literally think of you when they smell your signature scent elsewhere.

get sample sizes before committing (i wasted so much money before learning this)

wear a potential signature for at least a week straight

consider different concentrations (perfume, lotion, hair mist) for layering

my signature is a vanilla sandalwood that's slightly sweet but not too young feeling. i have it in everything from perfume to hand cream so the scent follows me subtly.

the key with signature jewelry is choosing pieces you can wear literally every day without getting tired of them:

i have these tiny star earrings i never take out and a delicate chain bracelet with my initial. they're subtle enough to go with everything but still distinctly "me."

there are so many other fun signatures you can develop:

a signature nail color or style

a signature accessory (headband, hair clip, specific bag)

a signature drink order (baristas at my local café start making mine when i walk in)

a signature makeup look (for me it's barely-there makeup with winged liner, or douyin makeup)

a signature phrase or greeting

the best signatures evolve naturally and feel effortless. if you're forcing it, it's probably not right for you! and remember signatures can evolve as you do - mine have shifted slightly over the years while still maintaining their essence.

it's about...longevity? stability? it's about natsume believing he'll be somewhere long enough to plant flowers and see them bloom. it's about him taking touko seriously when she asks him to tell her what flowers he wants to plant. it's about making something with his own hands, building a future with the fujiwaras. it's about him repairing a rundown home for someone else, restoring it because it's beloved to them, because it's the home of someone they love. it's about him seeing touko's joy and thinking about the youkai saying we'd like to look upon her happy face forever. it's about the box garden making him think of the fujiwaras' garden and his parents' garden, about the flowers being both the memory of flowers that bloomed there before, and the flowers that he and the youkai planted earlier that day. it's about him waking up in both worlds with sensei. it's about touko finding the petal in his hair. it's about him feeling how he falls short and the youkai saying, but you have such gentle hands...
