Consider this:

This is Leon's last game. Not because he is going to die, but because Grace figures out the blackmailing that has held Leon hostage since RC. She finds out that Leon is another, different kind of victim from RC.

She saves him. Leon is finally released from being forced to work. A federal agent (like a cop), a young blonde, saves him from a world that has been using and haunting him since 1998. He can retire. He is finally allowed to rest.

This new era of Resident Evil games is truly something. Back in the old days, it seemed like Capcom favored style over story/substance, especially during the Las Plagas era. It was to the point that people felt Capcom just truly didn’t give a crap about the story.

But these new games? You have Ethan Winters, who got a complete narrative. And now you have Grace Ashcroft, a character who is related to another character from a forgotten spin-off series and whose game is about visiting the remains of Raccoon City, thus trying to tie the new era of RE with the old era. This is literally the most effort I’ve seen from Capcom in trying to make Resident Evil games that don’t have throwaway storylines.

I still maintain that it was the impact of The Last of Us that got them to change direction.
