let’s talk for a second guys listen to me here. imagine theres this guy who’s your very good friend and finally you find him again thank god but he doesn’t know you. and you knew he wouldn’t. but you still try to help him and he’s so kind to you. to a stranger. he lets you stay in his home because “i’m sure my innie wouldn’t want you sleeping in a greenhouse” he’s not scared or confused and he believes you so easily. he doesn’t know you and he doesn’t love you but he cries after you die and thinks of his wife. and now also imagine there’s this woman. and you don’t know her and she doesn’t know you. she’s strange and kind of offputting but she’s still one of you in a way so you care because you’re a good person. she asks you to sculpt how you feel and you make a tree. the other night you were crying in front of the tree that killed her and you think you don’t know. you think you don’t feel it. but maybe you do. and now imagine there’s this guy banging down your door and screaming your name. by the time you get to open it he’s leaving. you follow him and you don’t know why. you’re watching him. a few days ago you were holding hands over a painting. and now you don’t know him. but maybe you do because maybe there’s something stronger than severance and maybe that’s love

i never see people talk about miss casey telling irv where to find burt in episode 5. she was awake for 107 hours and never longer than 8 consecutively and yet she loved Love and knew what it looked like. she was still able to pick up on the signs as a very young innie with negligible experience socialising that they wanted to see each other. the tiniest, most distilled version of gemma's personality was still driven by warmth and love and wanting to facilitate the happiness of others, despite knowing what it could cost her personally. god

a lot of people point out how little the innies actually work, particularly in mdr, and i have to say that apart from the fact that it solidifies that this is practically an experiment, i THINK it's because this is all the life they get.

if your life were just eight hours in a brightly lit job, you'd stop working as much as you can, because humans are not meant to work 24/7. but that's what the innies are supposed to be doing, according to the outies. they imagine them as their worker bees, their slaves, as they get to do none of the actual working. but of course, the worker bees have such a limited lifespan, that they grasp for freedom wherever and whenever they can. this is all they have.

it's why i think they love so intensely too, if they can. yes, it's all new to them, so there's also that, but it's more than that: they feel more quickly because life passes by more quickly. they could be "asleep" for five months without even knowing. lose friends (like petey) and not know how or why, if they're even alive or not. their lives are so little, and they need to live them to the fullest

it's like something ms casey said about how her life had been so short, and how valuable those hours shadowing helly had been. this is all they have. the human connections matter so much

let’s look at the highlights: mark scout is reintegrating his innie consciousness and his outie consciousness, creating a secret third personality made up of an amalgam of both. helena egan is obsessed with mark. irving bailiff is being wooed by burt’s outie, who may or may not be involved with the same company he’s been trying to bring down from the inside. outie dylan’s marriage is struggling and his wife isn’t happy. devon has been kept completely out of the loop about mark’s reintegration. ricken is a corporate sellout and possible cult leader. dr. reghabi has left mark scout. mark s is being reintegrated with his outie’s consciousness against his will while also trying to get it with helly r. helly r is still rebelling against her outie while also trying to get it with mark s. irving b is dead. dylan g is having an affair with his outie’s wife. seth milchick is having a crisis of identity. harmony cobel is at large. miss huang is a creepy kier youth and definitely a victim of child abuse. gemma scout is alive and currently living thru the most nightmarish dante’s inferno imaginable. nothing is getting refined in the mdr department.

Mark and Gemma being the only couple who’s love doesn’t transcend Severance is so interesting to me. And I don’t mean this in an anti MarkGemma way. I mean this in a what does this say about Severance? What does it say about their relationship?

Mark and Helena - Instantly flirtatious in that restaurant seemingly not even on purpose in oMark’s case he seems confused at himself after he realizes he’s flirting with Helena.

Burt and Irving - Still have a connection

Gretchen and Dylan - Dylan falls for her so quick and she absolutely falls for him

Why do Mark and Gemma’s innies have zero connection at all? Their outies clearly both still love each other or at least care for each other you can see that. Is it because Mark S was specifically created to forget her? Is it cause love stops transcending Severance after you’re severed a certain number of times? Are Gemma’s innies different in a way the other innies aren’t? WHAT DOES IT MEAN.

severance doesn’t just mean that companies like Lumon can get away with horrific exploitation, it also means the current aspects of society that we could improve, will stay the same cuz people can just chose not to experience it.

why would we work how to make pregnancy less painful, when we can just severe women, subjugating another consciousness to the painful process of birth? the actual person wont remember it, so who will complain. so why bother working toward improving resources for pregnant women?

why would we make corporate work less mind-numbing and exploitative, when we could severe someone and exploit that version of their consciousness? the real person won’t remember so they won’t care.

who will fight for change if we don’t even need to experience the inconvenient and painful parts of life.

these awful things will still happen to the innie consciousness, but no one will do anything, because it doesn’t directly affect them, just their innie. they don’t have to look the problems of the world in the eye, so evil corporate will keep on getting away with it.

the status quo won’t change. but you can pay to permanently fall asleep to it.

the very invention Lumon claims will “save the world” will make it forever stagnant, unable to improve. and corporate laughs as we pay for their solutions for problems the created and refused to solve.
