Saturday 25th March 2023
Today is me and my dad’s joint birthday party! 🍰🎉 I know I haven’t posted for a couple days because I’ve been so busy with work and personal projects that I kind of forgotten to give a mini update!
Finally gotten my certificate from my night coding class! Been a whole month since I finished it! It’s nicely put up on my LinkedIn profile (remind me to build a portfolio website to showcase my certificates more beautifully)!!
Work reviewed my salary and job title since I am no longer an apprentice. My new pay is what I guessed it would be and my new job title is “Junior Web Developer” since I will be working under Mike who’s official title is “Lead Web Developer” (didn’t know that till a couple days ago)! Got paid this morning and saw a great increase in pay, super happy! Can now save a lot to move to Canada 🇨🇦
As a present to myself for completing the apprenticeship AND the bootcamp, I bought myself a new laptop! I used ChatGPT to help me understand the specs of the laptop to help me buy the right one. I bought the ‘Lenovo IdeaPad 5 16in’! I can play The Sims 4 with my beautiful mods and code my projects on Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code 😎👍🏾

Still working on my attempt at a fullstack web development project “Her Story” - I am still continuing the list of potential authors. To make things easier for me, I decided to initially choose the top 50 women authors of each nationality. I have completed British, American, Canadian, Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese and German! So around 400 women authors completed!
Trying to continue learning Lua since I find it fun. Making mini projects to test new concepts I learn!
Still continuing my C# Console Applications Collection - I completed the temperature converter app and now working on the Interest Calculator. Had to go on GCSE kid websites to learn the formula of simple interest to create the calculator, I felt young again for a moment.
And that’s it I think! I seen someone on Tumblr create a mini tutorial on making a Python Discord bot I think, said I wanted to tried it because I’m an experimenter at heart so I wanted to give it a go! Also want to go back to my “Make a CSS framework” project and review how I can start that on the future!! So many things I want to do ugh!

Businesses have already plunged headfirst into AI adoption, racing to deploy chatbots, content generators, and decision-support tools across their operations. According to McKinsey, 78% of companies use AI in at least one business function.
The frenzy of implementation is understandable — everyone sees the potential value. But in this rush, many organizations overlook the fact that all neural network-based technologies, including every LLM and generative AI system in use today and for the foreseeable future, share a significant flaw: They are unpredictable and ultimately uncontrollable.
As some have learned, there can be real fall-out as a result. At one Chevrolet dealer that had deployed a chatbot to its website, a customer convinced the ChatGPT-powered bot to sell him a $58,195 Chevy Tahoe for just $1. Another customer prompted the same chatbot to write a Python script for complex fluid dynamics equations, which it happily did. The dealership quickly disabled the bots after these incidents went viral.
Last year, Air Canada lost in small claims court when it argued that its chatbot, which gave a passenger inaccurate information about a bereavement discount, “is a separate legal entity that is responsible for its own actions.”
This unpredictability stems from the fundamental architecture of LLMs. They’re so large and complex that it’s impossible to understand how they arrive at specific answers or predict what they’ll generate until they produce an output. Most organizations are responding to this reliability issue without fully recognizing it.
The common-sense solution is to check AI results by hand, which works but drastically limits the technology’s potential. When AI is relegated to being a personal assistant — drafting text, taking meeting minutes, summarizing documents, and helping with coding — it delivers modest productivity gains. Not enough to revolutionize the economy.
The true benefits of AI will arrive when we stop using it to assist existing jobs and instead rewire entire processes, systems, and companies to use AI without human involvement at every step. Consider loan processing: if a bank gives loan officers an AI assistant to summarize applications, they might work 20-30% faster. But deploying AI to handle the entire decision process (with appropriate safeguards) could slash costs by over 90% and eliminate almost all the processing time. This is the difference between incremental improvement and transformation.
The path to reliable AI implementation
Harnessing AI’s full potential without succumbing to its unpredictability requires a sophisticated blend of technical approaches and strategic thinking. While several current methods offer partial solutions, each has significant limitations.
Some organizations attempt to mitigate reliability issues through system nudging — subtly steering AI behavior in desired directions so it responds in specific ways to certain inputs. Anthropic researchers demonstrated the fragility of this approach by identifying a “Golden Gate Bridge feature” in Claude’s neural network and, by artificially amplifying it, caused Claude to develop an identity crisis. When asked about its physical form, instead of acknowledging it had none, Claude claimed to be the Golden Gate Bridge itself. This experiment revealed how easily a model’s core functioning can be altered and that every nudge represents a tradeoff, potentially improving one aspect of performance while degrading others.
Another approach is to have AI monitor other AI. While this layered approach can catch some errors, it introduces additional complexity and still falls short of comprehensive reliability. Hard-coded guardrails are a more direct intervention, like blocking responses containing certain keywords or patterns, such as precursor ingredients for weapons. While effective against known issues, these guardrails cannot anticipate novel problematic outputs that emerge from these complex systems.
A more effective approach is building AI-centric processes that can work autonomously, with human oversight strategically positioned to catch reliability issues before they cause real-world problems. You wouldn’t want AI to directly approve or deny loan applications,  but AI could conduct an initial assessment for human operators to review. This can work, but it relies on human vigilance to catch AI mistakes and undermines the potential efficiency gains from using AI.
Building for the future
These partial solutions point toward a more comprehensive approach. Organizations that fundamentally rethink how their work gets done rather than simply augmenting existing processes with AI assistance will gain the greatest advantage. But AI should never be the last step in a high-stakes process or decision, so what’s the best path forward?
First, AI builds a repeatable process that will reliably and transparently deliver consistent results. Second, humans review the process to ensure they understand how it works and that the inputs are appropriate. Finally, the process runs autonomously – using no AI – with periodic human review of results.
Consider the insurance industry. The conventional approach might add AI assistants to help claims processors work more efficiently. A more revolutionary approach would use AI to develop new tools — like computer vision that analyzes damage photos or enhanced fraud detection models that identify suspicious patterns — and then combine these tools into automated systems governed by clear, understandable rules. Humans would design and monitor these systems rather than process individual claims.
This approach maintains human oversight at the critical juncture where it matters most: the design and validation of the system itself. It allows for exponential efficiency gains while eliminating the risk that AI unpredictability will lead to harmful outcomes in individual cases.
An AI might identify potential indicators of loan repayment ability in transaction data, for instance. Human experts can then evaluate these indicators for fairness and build explicit, understandable models to confirm their predictive power.
This approach to explainable AI will create a clearer divide between organizations that use AI superficially and those that transform their operations around it. The latter will increasingly pull ahead in their industries, able to offer products and services at price points their competitors can’t match.
Unlike black-box AI, explainable AI systems ensure humans maintain meaningful oversight of the technology’s application, creating a future where AI augments human potential rather than simply replacing human labor.

Let’s base AI debates on reality, not extreme fears about the future

A recent open letter by computer scientists and tech industry leaders calling for a six-month ban on artificial intelligence development has received widespread attention online. Even Canada’s Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne has responded to the letter on Twitter.
The letter, published by the non-profit Future of Life Institute, has asked for all AI labs to stop training AI systems more powerful than GPT-4, the model behind ChatGPT. The letter argues that AI has been “locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one — not even their creators — can understand, predict, or reliably control.”
The letter assumes AI is becoming, or could become, “powerful digital minds” — a longtermist interpretation of AI’s development that ignores important debates about AI today in lieu of future concerns.
Longtermism and AI
Longtermism is the belief that artificial intelligence poses long-term or existential risks to humanity’s future by becoming an out-of-control superintelligence.
Worries about superintelligent AIs are usually the stuff of science fiction. AI fantasies are one of many fears in Silicon Valley that can lead to dark prophecies. But like the Torment Nexus meme, these worries translate into major investment not caution. Most major technology firms have cut their responsible AI teams.
ChatGPT is obviously not a path to superintelligence. The open letter sees AI language technology like ChatGPT as a cognitive breakthrough — something that allows an AI to compete with humans at general tasks. But that’s only one opinion.
There are many others that see ChatGPT, its GPT-4 model and other language learning models as “stochastic parrots” that merely repeat what they learn online so they appear intelligent to humans.
Superintelligence’s blind spots
Longtermism has direct policy implications that prioritize superintelligence over more pressing matter such as AI’s power imbalances. Some proponents of longtermism even consider regulation to stop superintelligence more urgent than addressing the climate emergency.
AI policy implications are immediate, not far off matters. Because GPT-4 is trained on the entire internet and has expressly commercial ends, it raises questions about fair dealing and fair use.
We still don’t know if AI-generated texts and images are copyrightable in the first place, since machines and animals cannot hold copyright.
And when it comes to privacy matters, ChatGPT’s approach is hard to distinguish from another AI application, Clearview AI. Both AI models were trained using massive amounts of personal information collected on the open internet. Italy’s data-protection authority has just banned ChatGPT over privacy concerns.
These immediate risks are left unmentioned in the open letter, which swings between wild philosophy and technical solutions, ignoring the issues that are right in front of us.
Drowning out pragmatism
The letter follows an old dynamic that my co-author and I identify in a forthcoming peer-reviewed chapter about AI governance. There is a tendency to view AI as either an existential risk or something mundane and technical.
The tension between these two extremes is on display in the open letter. The letter begins by claiming “advanced AI could represent a profound change in the history of life on Earth” before calling for “robust public funding for technical AI safety research.” The latter suggests the social harms of AI are merely technical projects to be solved.
The focus on these two extremes crowds out important voices trying to pragmatically discuss the immediate risks of AI mentioned above as well as labour issues and more.
The attention being given to the open letter is especially problematic in Canada because two other letters, written by artists and civil liberties organizations, have not received the same amount of attention. These letters call for reforms and a more robust approach to AI governance to protect those being affected by it.
An unneeded distraction toward AI legislation
Government responses to the open letter have stressed that Canada does have legislation — the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA). The longterm risks of AI are being used to rush legislation now like AIDA.
AIDA is an important step toward a proper AI governance regime, but it needs to better consult with those affected by AI before being implemented. It cannot be rushed to respond to perceived longterm fears.
The letter’s calls to rush AI legislation might end up advantaging the same few firms driving AI research today. Without time to consult, enhance public literacy and listen to those being affected by AI, AIDA risks passing on AI’s accountability and auditing to institutions already well positioned to benefit from the technology, creating a market for a new AI auditing industry.
Humanity’s fate might not be on the line, but AI’s good governance certainly is.
