Corrigan wished, almost badly, for the bottom of a glass. He wanted to burn his nostrils on whisky fumes and drink until he wasn’t sure if his ship was swaying or his world, here, three thousand miles from home, was teetering, rolling on the waters and capsizing hopelessly to unconsciousness. It was a gift, how resolute he could look in desolation. Dignified sadness.
A crucifix jut from the earth, the name Farley J.H. Everleigh scrawled on the board. One hundred men gone. One hundred. Corrigan stood straight and gazed quietly to the lapping waves.
“Is a man not the sum of his deeds? Lady Liberty?” he asked, low, raspy. It was not a question at all.
