February 4th is World Cancer day so I wanted to take a moment to briefly acknowledge this. As I have posted about before last October, Barbie has a history with the subject of cancer as her creator Ruth Handler was herself a survivor. As a result it is no surprise that Barbie has had tie-in dolls with the Susan G Komen foundation.
Tumblr media
Also worth noting is that Mattel has an ongoing collaboration with CureSearch, a childhood cancer charity. Mattel's contribution here is with Brave Barbie, a doll line now running for over 10 years.
To quote the Executive Director of Mattel Children's Foundation and Corporate Philanthropy, Nancy Molenda, as quoted in the linked article on the CureSearch website:
Brave Barbie is given to children that are going through difficult cancer treatments so that they can see themselves and feel comforted that they’re not going through this alone.
Tumblr media
Brave Barbies are donated to children fighting childhood cancer and depict either a light-skinned or a darker-skinned doll with no hair as well as a 'natural' coloured wig, a cute multi-coloured wig and a bandanna.
Mattel has also produced another doll in a similar range; friend of Barbie Ella, who was not for retail sale, but available only by donation to childrens hospitals, and depicted a friend of Barbie experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy.
Tumblr media
Cancer is a tragedy that affects many people and I am not going to ask you to donate to any particular charity or to engage in any particular kind of activism but I do encourage you to seek out a charity that suits you and that you personally would like to see support behind, if you are in a position where charity work or donations are right for you at the moment.

"In a first-ever human clinical trial, an mRNA cancer vaccine developed at the University of Florida successfully reprogrammed patients’ immune systems to fiercely attack glioblastoma, the most aggressive and lethal brain tumor.
The results in four adult patients mirrored those in 10 pet dog patients suffering from brain tumors whose owners approved of their participation.
The discovery represents a potential new way to recruit the immune system to fight treatment-resistant cancers using an iteration of mRNA technology and lipid nanoparticles, similar to COVID-19 vaccines, but with two key differences: use of a patient’s own tumor cells to create a personalized vaccine, and a newly engineered complex delivery mechanism within the vaccine.
“Instead of us injecting single particles, we’re injecting clusters of particles that are wrapping around each other like onions,” said senior author Elias Sayour, M.D., Ph.D., a UF Health pediatric oncologist who pioneered the new vaccine, which like other immunotherapies attempts to “educate” the immune system that a tumor is foreign.
“These clusters alert the immune system in a much more profound way than single particles would.”
Among the most impressive findings was how quickly the new method spurred a vigorous immune-system response to reject the tumor, said Sayour, principal investigator at the University’s RNA Engineering Laboratory and McKnight Brain Institute investigator who led the multi-institution research team.
“In less than 48 hours, we could see these tumors shifting from what we refer to as ‘cold’—very few immune cells, very silenced immune response—to ‘hot,’ very active immune response,” he said.
“That was very surprising given how quick this happened, and what that told us is we were able to activate the early part of the immune system very rapidly against these cancers, and that’s critical to unlock the later effects of the immune response,” he explained in a video (below).
Glioblastoma is among the most devastating diagnoses, with median survival around 15 months. Current standard of care involves surgery, radiation and some combination of chemotherapy.
The new report, published May 1 in the journal Cell, is the culmination of seven years of promising studies, starting in preclinical mouse models.
In the cohort of four patients, genetic material called RNA was extracted from each patient’s own surgically removed tumor, and then messenger RNA (mRNA)—the blueprint of what is inside every cell, including tumor cells—was amplified and wrapped in the newly designed high-tech packaging of biocompatible lipid nanoparticles, to make tumor cells “look” like a dangerous virus when reinjected into the bloodstream to prompt an immune-system response.
The vaccine was personalized to each patient with a goal of getting the most out of their unique immune system...
While too early in the trial to assess the clinical effects of the vaccine, the patients either lived disease-free longer than expected or survived longer than expected. The 10 pet dogs lived a median of 4.5 months, compared with a median survival of 30-60 days typical for dogs with the condition.
The next step, with support from the Food and Drug Administration and the CureSearch for Children’s Cancer foundation, will be an expanded Phase I clinical trial to include up to 24 adult and pediatric patients to validate the findings. Once an optimal and safe dose is confirmed, an estimated 25 children would participate in Phase 2."

Investing in Hope: How Foundations Are Changing the Landscape of Childhood Cancer Treatment
Investing in Hope: How Foundations Are Changing the Landscape of Childhood Cancer Treatment
Childhood cancer remains one of the most challenging medical battles, affecting thousands of families every year. While medical advancements have improved survival rates, the funding needed to support research, treatment, and care remains inadequate. Philanthropic foundations are playing a vital role in bridging this gap, transforming the landscape of pediatric cancer treatment through grants and strategic investments.
The Funding Need
Despite the significant impact of childhood cancer, federal funding for pediatric oncology research remains disproportionately low. Less than 4% of the U.S. federal cancer research budget is allocated to childhood cancer, leaving a substantial funding gap that nonprofit organizations and private donors must fill. Limited funding restricts the development of new therapies, delays clinical trials, and reduces access to comprehensive treatment programs.
Who Is Impacted?
Children with Cancer
Children diagnosed with cancer often face limited treatment options, particularly for rare and aggressive cancers. Insufficient research funding means fewer breakthroughs in targeted therapies and an increased reliance on decades-old treatments with severe side effects.
Families
The financial burden on families affected by childhood cancer can be overwhelming. From medical bills to travel expenses for specialized treatment, the costs quickly add up. Many families turn to nonprofit organizations for financial aid, lodging assistance, and emotional support.
Researchers
Oncologists and medical researchers struggle to secure consistent funding for innovative projects. With grants being highly competitive, many promising studies remain underfunded or abandoned altogether, slowing down potential life-saving discoveries.
Philanthropic Support: Grants and Impact
Philanthropic organizations are stepping up to address the funding shortfall. Nonprofits such as the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), and CureSearch have collectively invested millions in pediatric oncology research. These organizations provide grants to early-career researchers, fund clinical trials, and support survivorship programs that improve long-term outcomes for children in remission.
Future Trends in Philanthropic Funding
The landscape of nonprofit funding for childhood cancer research is evolving. Several key trends are shaping the future of philanthropic investments:
Increased Reliance on Private Funding – With limited government resources, nonprofit organizations are launching large-scale fundraising campaigns to secure sustainable funding for research and patient support.
Focus on Hard-to-Treat Cancers – Foundations are prioritizing research on aggressive and rare pediatric cancers, ensuring that children with the highest need receive targeted treatment options.
Collaborative Efforts – Many organizations are partnering with research institutions, hospitals, and governmental agencies to maximize impact and share resources efficiently.
Support Beyond Research – In addition to funding scientific advancements, nonprofits are expanding their focus to include family assistance programs, mental health resources, and post-treatment survivorship care.
Conclusion
Philanthropic foundations play a crucial role in transforming childhood cancer treatment. Through sustained financial support, research funding, and direct aid to families, these organizations are changing lives and offering hope to those affected by pediatric cancer. As reliance on private funding grows, collaborative efforts and a focus on underfunded areas will be key to driving innovation and improving survival rates for children battling cancer.

Girl Scouts is your favorite organization??
Hmmmm, I don't know that I have a favorite organization. It's definitely not GSUSA, that's for sure. [Council] I do like, and I feel like I have at least some say in making things better. If you can separate out my camp from council, that would probably be my favorite.
In other lines of work, I'm a fan of NAMI and International Bipolar Foundation, as they all do great work. CureSearch and St Baldricks are also a top contender.
I think it's important to be able to separate mission from people carrying out the mission of your favorite organization, at least a little bit.
You can still love what your old camp stands for, even when they have a director that you don't like.
You can still love your former youth organization, even if the CEO's vision doesn't match what you believe in.
Your memories, your love, your passion, none of that goes away because other people do something different.
You can love your memories, and hate the modern, love something you hated when you were younger, or love them at both times, in different ways, and all of that is valid.

What does the nick of time really mean
What does the nick of time really mean
Not in the literal sense. I fancy myself a wordsmith, one who understands layers of poetry in its layers of truth and expression, so I choose my words specifically, if not always wisely. But as I sit in semi-darkness, listening to music to drown out the clouds for a moment, a song. Isn’t that what great music (one of those layers of poetic expression previously mentioned) peels back? A song for…

BRONYCON SHOWS THE BEST OF BALTIMORE WITH NEW THURSDAY EVENTS
(BALTIMORE) - BronyCon is in the fast lane towards Friday, July 27. But some of our friends who beat the traffic and arrive a day early need things to do once they arrive in Baltimore. We’re happy to announce we’ve partnered with four organizations to bring both attendees and interested locals the best of the city with this year’s Thursday events!
First, BronyCon is happy to announce a fundraising venture between the convention and the Baltimore Orioles of Major League Baseball. As one of the U.S.’s best baseball cities, the team has always enjoyed a rich fanbase. We’re offering attendees a chance to be a part of this group with a special ticket offer. Those who purchase a ticket for the Thursday night game against the Tampa Bay Rays through our website will have $5 of their cost given directly to CureSearch for Cancer Research. The game is also a giveaway night, with attendees possibly receiving a shirt upon entry to the park. Camden Yards sits next door to the Baltimore Convention Center and tickets are in section 342 of the ballpark.
Those looking for a fun night on the town can enjoy a returning favorite: BronyCon’s yearly Bar Trot. The trot will visit numerous bars within the Fells Point area of Baltimore and will be done on foot with help from Food Tour Corp. There are 75 spots available for the trot and admission costs $16 per person.
A family favorite event returning this year is our cupcake decorating class with Charm City Cakes. Decorators will learn the basics during a fun cupcake class running from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. Students will each receive 4 cupcakes, and learn how to cut, and prepare fondant to create their favorite MLP characters. Space is limited so act fast!
We’re happy to announce that BronyCon and Charm City Clue Room will once again be teaming up to put attendees mind’s to the test! Attendees have 60 minutes one of four rooms, including two brand new rooms: "Dark Carnival" and "Poe: Oval Portrait.” Discounted rates are available all weekend with promo codes located on our website. Charm City Clueroom is located at 6 Market Place in the Inner Harbor at Power Plant Live. Clue Room will also be at BronyCon in person holding a separate escape room event as a activity for attendees to try out.
Finally, after last year’s successful PokémonGO walk, another is being spearheaded by enthusiastic Trainers and BronyCon staff. A start time and place has not been finalized, however interested parties can visit our Discord server at https://discord.gg/cRYyPNQ to discuss meeting up and potential ideas.
All information and related links regarding these activities can be found at http://bronycon.org/events/thursday.
To register, visit BronyCon’s registration page. Badges for BronyCon will cost more at the door, so don’t wait! Also make sure you are following BronyCon on Facebook, Twitter, and Telegram to be the first to hear our latest announcements.
