DARK ENERGY PRESENTS...SHAMICA RUDDOCK + BANTU + DUSHUME + DHANGSHA
Tumblr media
Celebrating label Dark Energy's inaugural release, Bantu's debut album "Instability," four protagonists explore the juxtaposition of heavy bass with noise. Bantu himself presents deep modulations that simmer with a quiet rage, exploding unexpectedly into bit-crushed stutter and then abrupt silences. Shamica Ruddock posits disjointed and chaotic loops, broken and sometimes beyond repair, subby and disorientating. Dushume contributes menacing low end frequencies, neither pulse nor drone, that envelop bodies like an impenetrable black fog. Dhangsha offers an industrial inflected dancehall which invariably collapses under sonic duress, with mutilated beats straddling the boundaries of good taste.

Exploring Cultural Diversity in Experimental Sound
The SOUND/IMAGE research group is delighted to announce the AHRC funded project “Exploring Cultural Diversity in Experimental Sound” hosted at the University of Greenwich.
Tumblr media
Where are all the black and South Asian experimental music artists?
Researchers at the University of Greenwich aim to find out as part of a new 18-month UKRI-funded project.
Exploring Cultural Diversity in Experimental Sound aims to challenge institutional whiteness in experimental sound practice by investigating the creative identities of contemporary black and South Asian composers working in the UK.
Research Fellow in Experimental Sound Dr Amit D. Patel is leading the project. He said: “Black and South Asian artists are some of the least represented within the genre of experimental sound. Our research seeks to tackle this lack of representation, raising the profile of diverse practices, highlighting potentials in pushing increased diversity, and seeking to challenge the invisibility of whiteness in the art form.”
The research will involve observation of artists and their practices, interviews, and focus groups. The research will aim to unpack how these unique experiences are situated in relation to the structural and cultural contexts of experimental sound in the UK.
Dr Andrew Knight-Hill, Senior Lecturer in Sound Design and Music Technology, added: “We are really excited to be working with an incredible array of artists and UK wide partners on this important research project, including Musicians Union, Sound & Music, Punch Records and a network of UK university music departments.
“It is our goal that the outcomes of this project will help to effect change that makes experimental music more diverse. We’ll be developing policy guidelines which will help organisations as they seek to engage and encourage new artists to celebrate their diverse heritage and bring exciting new music/sound art to wider audiences.”
The project team is delighted to be working in partnership with the following leading UK Music organisations:
Musicians Union: https://musiciansunion.org.uk
Sound and Music: https://soundandmusic.org
Punch: https://www.wearepunch.co.uk
Iklectik: https://iklectikartlab.com
Usurp: http://www.usurp.org.uk
BEAN: https://britishelectroacousticnetwork.com
The research runs from September 2021 to February 2023. It is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (Grant Ref: AH/V010964/1) and hosted by the SOUND/IMAGE Research Group at the University of Greenwich.

IKLECTIK [off-site] presents: Dushume / Odie ji Ghast
Lockdown Noise
Undisturbed, mangled and discarded recordings from the archives will be unearthed to coalesce with thumping and erratic grooves of the Radical Nails sound(-making) object. Sounds will cook through extreme live performance, and by improvising with the studio recordings/turntables through ad-hoc extended DJ techniques. Extensive re-editing approaches of sounds from a range of differing spectrums are intertwined and mashed-up, expect a buffet of experimental harsh sounds, pulses, noise, drones, clicks, rhythms and bass. Fundamentally, anticipate the result in form of a collage/ mixtape to reference and playback on demand at a later date. www.dushume.co.uk

Also on the line up:
Odie ji Ghast ''A distribution of a person in different rooms, starlight in her pyjamas (forever attire, because now you’re retired). I sat next to my words; visited whatevers I felt good resanging or just sang melodies in my heart so I can now mutter ‘I am art’. Not even an artist. I always push my face into the closet then rush straight back probing ‘who are you?’ and ‘are you even there?’ But I must be. Because everyone’s so friendly to me, including my daughter. We sit with each other and watch our life happening in entirely different speed now, with animation. Every week is different from the other, with different goals and newly acquired understanding. But continuous discomfort of pain is the same throughout the passage of time. So we cling onto that pain and onto that animation and we vocalise our thoughts. Ba ba ba and da da da… da-irectionless we aren’t but, distanced, now truly living in this momentary image.''

INTERROGATING THE NOISE: Dirty Electronics & Dushume
A cacophony of rhythmic stutters polarising with brutal deep bass – interrogating the noise! Object Noise Clusters made from everyday objects – pots and pans, oil can, oven shelf, coffee pot, clock gongs – are hung from the ceiling and intermittently vigorously shaken by motors. These are placed next to DIY loudspeakers strung-up creating an intense dialogue between acoustic and electronic sound. While rotating speaker horns bounce clicks around the space. Ink drips from a cannula onto a piece of out-stretched vibrating ‘noise’ paper.
The artwork unfolded as a preview night performance: Saturday 25th Feb 2023

Exhibition Launch Event: 6-9 pm: Tuesday 28 February - the sound art installation is on til the 24th March 23.
Special Thanks to Emma Margetson and Lauryn Keift-Wilshere for the images.
