Study finds AI can slash global carbon emissions
A study from the London School of Economics and Systemiq suggests it’s possible to cut global carbon emissions without giving up modern comforts—with AI as our ally in the climate fight.
According to the duo’s research, smart AI applications in just three industries could slash greenhouse gas emissions by 3.2-5.4 billion tonnes each year by 2035.
In contrast to much of what we’ve heard, these reductions would far outweigh the carbon that AI itself produces.
The study, ‘Green and intelligent: the role of AI in the climate transition,’ doesn’t just see AI as a tool for small improvements. Instead, it could help transform our entire economy into something sustainable and inclusive.
Net-zero as an opportunity, not a burden
The researchers suggest we should see the shift to a net-zero economy not as a burden but as “a great opportunity for innovation and sustainable, resilient, and inclusive economic growth.”
They focused on three of the major carbon culprits – power generation, meat and dairy production, and passenger vehicles – which together cause almost half of global emissions. The potential AI savings from just these sectors would more than cancel out the estimated 0.4 to 1.6 billion tonnes of annual emissions from running all those AI data centers.
As the authors put it, “the case for using AI for the climate transition is not only strong but imperative.”
Five big ways AI can help save our planet (and us)
1. Making complex systems smarter
Think about how our modern lives depend on intricate networks for energy, transport, and city living. AI can redesign these systems to work much more efficiently.
Remember those frustrating power outages when the wind stops blowing or clouds cover the sun? AI can help predict these fluctuations in renewable energy and balance them with real-time demand. DeepMind has already shown its AI can boost wind energy’s economic value by 20% by reducing the need for backup power sources.
2. Speeding up discovery and reducing waste
Almost half the emissions cuts needed to reach net-zero by 2050 will rely on technologies that are barely out of the lab today and AI is turbocharging these breakthroughs.
Take Google DeepMind’s GNOME tool, which has already identified over two million new crystal structures that could revolutionise renewable energy and battery storage. Or consider how Amazon’s AI packaging algorithms have saved over three million metric tons of material since 2015.
3. Helping us make better choices
Our daily decisions – from what we eat, to how we travel – could drive up to 70% of emissions reductions by 2050. But making the right choice isn’t always easy.
AI can be our personal environmental coach, breaking down information barriers and offering tailored recommendations. Already using Google Maps’ fuel-efficient routes? That’s AI helping you cut emissions while saving gas money. And those smart home systems like Nest use AI to optimise your heating and cooling, which could save millions of tonnes of CO2 if we all adopted them.
4. Predicting climate changes and policy effects
How do we plan for a changing climate? AI can process enormous datasets to forecast climate patterns with unprecedented accuracy.
Tools like IceNet (developed by the British Antarctic Survey and the Alan Turing Institute) are using AI to predict sea ice levels better than ever before, helping communities and businesses prepare. This capability also extends to helping governments design climate policies that actually work, by learning from countless case studies around the world.
5. Keeping us safe in extreme weather
As climate disasters intensify, early warning can save lives. AI-powered systems for floods and wildfires are becoming essential safety nets.
Google’s Flood Hub uses machine learning to provide flood forecasts up to five days in advance across more than 80 countries. That’s precious time for people to protect their homes and evacuate if necessary.
The numbers support AI cutting global carbon emissions
When researchers crunched the numbers, they found AI could:
Cut power sector emissions by 1.8 billion tonnes yearly by 2035 just by optimising renewable energy
Save between 0.9 and 3.0 billion tonnes annually by improving plant-based proteins to taste and feel more like meat
Reduce vehicle emissions by up to 0.6 billion tonnes each year through shared mobility and better battery technology
Here’s the catch: we can’t just sit back and let market forces determine how AI develops. The researchers call for an “active state” to ensure that AI benefits everyone and the planet.
“Governments have a critical role in ensuring that AI is deployed effectively to accelerate the transition equitably and sustainably,” they conclude.
What this means in practice is creating incentives for green AI research, regulating to minimise environmental impact, and investing in infrastructure so communities worldwide can share in the benefits.

Green energy is in its heyday.
Renewable energy sources now account for 22% of the nation’s electricity, and solar has skyrocketed eight times over in the last decade. This spring in California, wind, water, and solar power energy sources exceeded expectations, accounting for an average of 61.5 percent of the state's electricity demand across 52 days.
But green energy has a lithium problem. Lithium batteries control more than 90% of the global grid battery storage market.
That’s not just cell phones, laptops, electric toothbrushes, and tools. Scooters, e-bikes, hybrids, and electric vehicles all rely on rechargeable lithium batteries to get going.
Fortunately, this past week, Natron Energy launched its first-ever commercial-scale production of sodium-ion batteries in the U.S.
“Sodium-ion batteries offer a unique alternative to lithium-ion, with higher power, faster recharge, longer lifecycle and a completely safe and stable chemistry,” said Colin Wessells — Natron Founder and Co-CEO — at the kick-off event in Michigan.
The new sodium-ion batteries charge and discharge at rates 10 times faster than lithium-ion, with an estimated lifespan of 50,000 cycles.
Wessells said that using sodium as a primary mineral alternative eliminates industry-wide issues of worker negligence, geopolitical disruption, and the “questionable environmental impacts” inextricably linked to lithium mining.
“The electrification of our economy is dependent on the development and production of new, innovative energy storage solutions,” Wessells said.
Why are sodium batteries a better alternative to lithium?
The birth and death cycle of lithium is shadowed in environmental destruction. The process of extracting lithium pollutes the water, air, and soil, and when it’s eventually discarded, the flammable batteries are prone to bursting into flames and burning out in landfills.
There’s also a human cost. Lithium-ion materials like cobalt and nickel are not only harder to source and procure, but their supply chains are also overwhelmingly attributed to hazardous working conditions and child labor law violations.
Sodium, on the other hand, is estimated to be 1,000 times more abundant in the earth’s crust than lithium.
“Unlike lithium, sodium can be produced from an abundant material: salt,” engineer Casey Crownhart wrote in the MIT Technology Review. “Because the raw ingredients are cheap and widely available, there’s potential for sodium-ion batteries to be significantly less expensive than their lithium-ion counterparts if more companies start making more of them.”
What will these batteries be used for?
Right now, Natron has its focus set on AI models and data storage centers, which consume hefty amounts of energy. In 2023, the MIT Technology Review reported that one AI model can emit more than 626,00 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent.
“We expect our battery solutions will be used to power the explosive growth in data centers used for Artificial Intelligence,” said Wendell Brooks, co-CEO of Natron.
“With the start of commercial-scale production here in Michigan, we are well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for efficient, safe, and reliable battery energy storage.”
The fast-charging energy alternative also has limitless potential on a consumer level, and Natron is eying telecommunications and EV fast-charging once it begins servicing AI data storage centers in June.
On a larger scale, sodium-ion batteries could radically change the manufacturing and production sectors — from housing energy to lower electricity costs in warehouses, to charging backup stations and powering electric vehicles, trucks, forklifts, and so on.
“I founded Natron because we saw climate change as the defining problem of our time,” Wessells said. “We believe batteries have a role to play.”

I know my friends often think I’m paranoid for omitting pretty much every smart device outside of your standard phone and laptop from my life but honestly after playing Megaman Battle Network as a child, I know it’s only going to take a few very inspired people tired of corporate BS and experiencing a mental break to create a real world variation of World III.
Like. We’ve already heard of stories of people whose chastity cages got electronically hacked and force locked, and while that’s certainly creative, MMBN absolutely had way more simpler, and entirely possible crimes to commit.
Our fridges are online? Who controls that temperature. Maybe entire grocery stores will find their food either freezer burnt or spoiling.
Our thermostats? Well, it’d be a shame if somebody globally altered the temperature floor of the device to be boiling point.
Our cars are smart now? The literal first game had a chapter that merely took over traffic lights, it would only be easier to make the cars simply lock their users in and drive into each other.
Most data centers I’ve been to, even in multimillion dollar orgs, have dozens and dozens of servers protecting websites and the backup management processes are all handled by a single laptop that has a sticky note that says “do not close laptop” in a room that is virtually untouched for weeks at a time, except to check the temperatures of the cooling systems in the same room. As security, I can say I would have no idea if someone who came in for server maintenance was doing something suspicious or not, and even third party maintenance staff are often left to their own devices to work on perceived problems. Sure, they’re on camera, but so what if the next three people who work in the room are all going to be more third party maintenance staff?
Knowing that full well, I’m never going to buy a smart bidet for fear that it will end up with its water pressure settings altered, turning it into a power washer that ass blasts me to death.

Future themed, like 80 or more so years in the future (like 2100-2200) where science has progressed some, but not a lot…
Slight insinuation to omega-verse (John can “smell” reader, like twice); wasn’t sure if I wanted to go that way or not though🤔
Simple mission. It was supposed to be simple. Get in, kill, extract information, get out. Why can’t it ever be simple like planned?
John smelled you before he saw you; that’s what derailed the mission. Rifle at the low ready, his men ready to breach the door; deadly team ready for whatever they find… so they thought.
Nothing prepared them for the scene alike to a human butcher shop. A mad scientist’s wet dream… Human blood jarred in glass canisters, skin pinned to a display board and drawn on mapping out tests, charts upon charts of anatomical drawings etched with half coherent data and notes.
The further they walk in the room, the worse it gets. Rotting flesh singeing the noses from the dead bodies left abandoned on gurneys and morgue tables… then came the weird part…
The glass pods; most broken and bodies spilled across the glass dead. Seemingly accidentally killed in rushed transport considering the knocked over trollies.
There was one though, the one John sniffed out having caught wind of something… *Odd…* A single surviving competent pod, filled with an eerie blue glowing liquid suspending a body curled in fetal position in the center. The information screen attached to the pod is blacked out. Turned off or dead, one of the two. Body left for dead, suspended and abandoned.
His jaw sets at the disturbing sight; watching as muscles twitch from the unconscious form. Akin to how a babe might when in womb…
“Bloody hell…” Gaz breathes feeling sick to his stomach, staring at the pod beside John with horror.
“Computers don’t work.” Ghost informs as he pulls a hard-drive from a server tower. “Whatever *it’s*,” he glances at the pod, taking in the wires and tubes connected to the platform it sits on, “running on has to be connected to a backup generator or something.”
Soap simply grimaces at the sight as he looks around, keeping his rifle at low ready alongside the Lieutenant, “Well, wha’ever it runs off ‘f, we nee’ t’ get out ’f Dextor’s Laboratory, aye?”
“Aye, mate.” John finally turns, looking away from the pod, carefully stepping over the tangle of cords and tubes connected to the experiment.
Gaz isn’t as fortunate as he follows his Captain’s lead; foot tangling in the mess as he slams into the ground pulling tubes off their plugs. “Shite!” The liquid gushing out of the platform and sparking wires as the pod drains.
John snatches Gaz up by his uniform as the team scatters backwards away from the blue-tinted watery slime that pools.
That’s when the information screen lights up; rebooting with the spark of live wires. Static and binary code race across the screen before it displays a connection error and flashes the last know screen with a couple error filled lines. It’s enough to read though.

Then the glass cracks.
“Well… shit…” John flips his safety as he gives the order and drops knee, “Safeties off.” He takes aim when the person who is now laid on the bottom of the pod floor breathes, “Gaz, get us intel off that drive.”
Ghost passes Gaz the drive as he moves to position, second on the right in Echelon, Soap to the first right, while Gaz loops around behind and moves to the control panel and plugs in the drive into the now powered terminal.
It’s tense; and John’s nose still tickles with the sticky scent of earlier, even if accompanied by rancid the musk of stale- and questionably- water.
That’s when your head lifts, hazily and weakly looking at the four uniformed soldiers in confusion and disorientated anxieties.
“Bloody hell, Mother Mary and Christ…” Gaz breathes loud cutting the silence with awe and shock; his head snapping away from the computer screen and keyboard to glance between his war brothers and you.
He doesn’t even know how to explain the situation, but still, he speaks; “They Wolverined their arses.”
That was the best explanation he had for what he read on the drive.

The Princess and the Parselmouth
Sebastian Sallow was happy for his best friend. He was completely, a hundred percent happy that Ominis and Miradevi’s fates had intertwined, that they’d managed to find each other. She was good for him, Sebastian thought, as he fluffed his pillow a tad too aggressively. The princess had the uncanny ability to flip any argument in her favor and speak absolutely perfect Politic, which unnerved him just a little. She could be an intimidating figure beneath her soft eyes and luxurious attitude if she so chose, with a charisma that Sebastian flagged as a bit too much like his own.
Perhaps she reminded him of Anne.
Perhaps she reminded him of himself.
Sheafs of parchment indented from the print of cramped notes on both sides cluttered the small desk by the window in his little apartment space, a calendar pinned above his bed. Scribbles in red marked out meetings with his phD advisor, days he ought to set aside for data collection, days he devoted to poring over curse-breaking magic. All of it blended in a mishmash, and he’d given up on neatness or sense at this point.
The cleanest space was his bed. Crisp, well-made sheets neatly tucked. Turmoil on his desk and turmoil in his life meant frequent bouts of insomnia, and having a neat bed was the least he could do for himself.
The plush mattress creaked under him as he stared up at the vaulted ceiling, the dim moonlight carving its way across the lakewater pressing against his window. Salazar Slytherin’s spellbook sat far too innocuously on his bedside table, ancient and promising, and the only scrap of hope he was clinging to. Miradevi’s attempt to find something from the royal libraries back home had resulted in a slight issue- the texts were written in absolutely ancient Sanskrit, and any reliable magilinguist with a hope in hell of providing an accurate translation would be found in Surya, not Scotland.
Then there was the issue of the bloody bombings.
A close second to Anne’s plight, it was yet another thing pushing and shoving for purchase in the rolling hurricane of Sebastian Sallow’s mind. None of it made sense. It could have been a Muggleborn attempting to obstruct the passing of the Purity Act, or a backup plan from a deranged pureblood in case the vote didn’t go in their favor. Either way, people he cared about deeply were involved. Therefore, it was not a slight that would go unpunished or uninvestigated.
Sebastian groaned, turning over. The dungeons were too cold, the moonlight filtering through the water far too bright.
And his mind was being louder than ever, interspersed with low, serpentine whispers from the book at his bedside table.

“You had better be wearing lab gear, my darling.”
Princess Miradevi grimaced at Ominis’s stern tone and accepted a sleek robe with a murmur of thanks from whatever poor, unpaid undergraduate intern had been assigned to Ominis as an assistant. The charmwoven fibres left a pleasing prickle of magic along her skin, the woven runes creating a net of glittering gold curling and locking like tattoos, protecting from the heavy haze of experimental magic that hung in the air.
The Flamel Laboratory of Spellweaving was a sprawling chamber of stone and wood, the corners of the room creating a perfect hexagon. Heavy tables sat in each corner, weighed down by glass apparatuses holding various miasmatic substances that sparked, fizzed, or glowed gently. The center of the chamber held a longer table, mostly empty save for a scattering of sheets everywhere- and her lover standing at one end, hunched over something she could not see- but shimmering signatures of potent, powerful magic rippled around his fingers.
His wand was suspended between a metallic structure shaped like a square bracket, spinning languidly, the tip pulsing with its signature cherry-red light.
“Dare I ask?” Her voice was soft, unwilling to break whatever it was that held his focus.
“You may do more than that, actually. I might need your help with something. ” Ominis straightened, rolling his shoulders slightly. “Where are you? Say something else-”
“Here.” She reached out, gently tapping his shoulder, guiding his attention to his right. “What do you need help with? European spell composition and invention isn’t my forte, but I could try.”
A sheepish little smile crossed his face as he stood, his hand searching for his wand, pulling it away from the bracket it was suspended between. The structure stopped humming as he did so.
“I need you to be my…well, the muggles have a good saying for it. My canary in a coal mine, as it were.”
“Ominis Gaunt, are you going to run experiments on me?” Miradevi wiggled with an air of anticipation, the long pleats of her lehenga brushing the stone floors as she stood from the stool. “Sounds like incredible fun.”
“You’re not going to ask for my Human Subjects Research approval? The appropriate documents? How very anti-bureaucratic of you, Mira.” He was leaning against the desk, arms folded, giving her that infernal little smile and head tilt combination. Miradevi nodded, her ears heating slightly.
“I trust you. Go on then, what nefarious tests are you going to run?”
“The spell my wand employs to let me assess my surroundings is not, in fact, a spell at all.” Ominis let her run her fingers along the wood. “The wand itself is made for people with blindness or low vision. The issue is that there are not very many of them, since the magic is finicky and difficult to replicate. My thesis is centered around audiomancy and- well, making this sort of magic better. Right now, it’s like… listening with a bit of cotton in your ears, or looking through a mildly grimy window.”
“So you’re tweaking it.” Mira reached for a few of the notes scattered on the main desk, rather impressed by the concise way Ominis put his thoughts on paper. “That’s impressive-”
“Not just that. I’m looking to expand. There are far more people like me than the wizarding world would like to acknowledge. Getting funding for this project was a real nightmare, but that’s a different story. Here, would you indulge me? Close your eyes, and take my wand.”
He had said it fairly lightly, and while wandless magic was the norm she’d grown up with, even Mira knew the significance of being handed another’s wand. She obeyed, gently reaching for the sleek wood.
The awareness that closing her eyes robbed her of was suddenly supplemented by sensations that bloomed to life around her; she stumbled, thrown completely off balance for a moment as sounds, shapes, and a strange haze of magic began to map out her surroundings.
“Ominis-”
“Disorienting, I know. Focus, for a moment. Find your balance and trust the magic. Trust me. This is an extension of myself, and I’d never lead you astray, Mira.”
“You sound different.” She murmured, screwing her eyes shut tighter to avoid the instinct to open them. Her shin connected with the edge of the table leg. “Ow. You sound more sybillant. Like I’m hearing your voice in more depth.”
A hand brushed her shoulder, and she leaned into Ominis’s touch as he guided her gently away from the table, towards the pathway around the lab. She could begin to feel where heavy structures began and ended, a faint hum of magic pulsing outwards like waves of sound, bouncing off the walls, and returning the data input to her brain.
“You hear the Parseltongue in my voice. You hear me and what some would call my essence more clearly.” He braced Mira’s shoulders with his hands, a shiver running down his spine at the feeling of her back pressed against his chest. He ducked down, his lips just above her ear. “When you speak, I hear the heavier edge of Hindi underlying your words. The weight of Sanskrit your ancestors passed down, that your tongue remembers. Like deeper layers, only focused hearing can unveil.”
“That’s amazing.” She took a few tentative steps forward, managing to avoid a stray chair but catching her foot on a crack in the flagstones. A flaw. A rather glaring one. She paused and turned slowly. “It didn’t pick that up. Your wand, it didn’t show me the crack on the floor.”
“And that is the issue.” He was having far too much fun with this. Despite feeling thoroughly thrown off balance without having his wand in hand, Ominis could hear the rustling of her clothes, the jingling of her jewelry, and the touch of her fingers as she reached for him like instinct, he noted with something far too satisfied. “It’s not polished enough, not as sharp as it should be. For someone who relies on it to navigate their entire life? It falls short.”
He couldn’t resist. His hand traced along her shoulder, past the soft fabric of her lehenga, along her slender neck where her usual weight of jewelry sat. His lips caught the thump-thump-thump of her pulse- and he shuddered at the way she gasped when his sharp canines dragged along her throat.
“Ominis-” She tilted her head back, and his hand found her jawline, her lips, her eyes- still closed.
“Good girl.” His murmur was soft, approving. And his palm slowly rested over her fluttering lashes, ensuring that her vision remained void. “That is what I am working on. That is what I hope to produce. Magic that is so precise, so intricate and detailed, that no one like me will ever trip on a crack in the floor again.”
She shifted, wiggling out of his grip to face him. Her soft breathing whispered over his skin as she nuzzled into the crook of his neck, her arms coming up to tangle with his hair. Spurred on by the fact that the undergrad had beaten a hasty retreat a while ago, he found her jawline and lifted her face up, searching for her lips. “Come to me.”
His soft command was met with a kiss, and he hummed, low and appreciative. Heat settled in his abdomen as Miradevi pressed closer, a soft sigh slipping from her, and he took the opportunity to taste her, to swipe his tongue along her mouth and draw her closer. His back hit the cold stone wall, the rattle of equipment drowned out by her moan of his name, his low groan-
“Wasn’t I supposed to take you to Hogsmead?” Ominis growled, his hand finding the sliver of skin between the blouse and flowing skirt of her lehenga and gripping at the slim curves there.
“We can push it by about half an hour-” Mira gasped softly as he hitched her into his arms. “I don’t mind a delay.”
Ominis’s soft laugh held an edge of danger in it. And she was more than willing to fall into whatever web he was laying out for her. “Half an hour? I’m going to take my time, Princess. And I’m hardly going to do it here.”
Much to her chagrin and growing anticipation in equal parts, Miradevi allowed Ominis to pull away from her, his hand in hers as he gently led her from the lab room.
“One hour. One hour, and then I’m taking you to Honeydukes.”

A fire broke out Thursday morning at a data center in Hillsboro, Oregon, leased by Elon Musk’s X, forcing an extended response from emergency crews, according to multiple sources who spoke to WIRED. The sources required anonymity as they aren’t authorized to speak publicly about the company.
Firefighters arrived at the Hillsboro Technology Park, in a suburb west of Portland, at 10:21 am, according to Hillsboro Fire and Rescue spokesperson Piseth Pich. They found a room with batteries that were deemed to be involved in the fire. Pich noted that the fire had not spread to other parts of the building, but said the room in question was heavy with smoke. As of 3:00 pm, the crew was still on the scene.
X did not immediately respond to a request for comment from WIRED. It could not be learned whether server operations at the data center had been affected by the incident.
Before Elon Musk bought Twitter, the company had three data centers in Sacramento, Portland, and Atlanta. This ensured that if one data center went down, traffic could be shifted to the other two—and split so no single data center was overwhelmed.
Around Christmas Eve 2022, Musk shut down X’s data center in Sacramento in an effort to cut costs. The company experienced a major outage in the wake of the shutdown. Over the next six months, the company moved more than 2,573 server racks from the Sacramento facility to data centers in Portland and Atlanta, according to internal documents.
In the Portland area, X appears to lease space from a building that has been linked to Digital Realty, one of the world’s largest developers of data centers. Digital Realty provides varying levels of operating support at its sites, which can have one or more tenants. It’s unclear if X shares this facility with other companies.
Ryan Young, vice president of Americas operations for Digital Realty, said in a statement to WIRED on Thursday evening that the “fire-related incident at our PDX11 facility” had been contained and that the fire department had left. “All personnel were safely evacuated, with no reported injuries,” Young stated. “We continue to monitor the situation, prioritizing the safety of our personnel, the integrity of the facility, and minimizing customer impact.”

Batteries often function as a backup power source at data centers. But lithium-ion varieties can be volatile, and issues with upkeep and inadequate safety measures have contributed to costly blazes at data centers around the world. Pich, the Hillsboro Fire Department spokesperson, says he could not recall any previous fire involving batteries in the Oregon region’s many other data centers.
X’s parent company, xAI, has taken criticism in recent months for its rapid expansion of power capacity at a new data center in Memphis, which opened last year. That facility, which Musk named Colossus, was built up at breakneck speed to train xAI’s Grok and other AI tools. The company installed more than 30 methane-powered gas turbines, but because the turbines are temporary, a federal permit for pollution control isn't required, which appears to exploit a loophole in the Clean Air Act. The facility has drawn widespread criticism from surrounding Black and brown communities, who are already exposed to a large amount of air pollution and industrial emissions from other facilities in the area.
